Taylor Lautner Parkour Flick Will Be ‘Action Heavy’

‘Tracers’ will ‘really dig into this society,’ producer Wyck Godfrey tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Taylor Lautner Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images When MTV News sat down with “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” producer Wyck Godfrey recently for some expert analysis of the film’s chances in taking home golden popcorn at this Sunday’s (June 3) MTV Movie Awards , we walked out with insightful Best Kiss category commentary as well as a few good tidbits about his future projects with the franchise’s stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner . Pattinson’s potential project is in the very early stages, but Lautner’s next movie with Godfrey has been greenlit, an action thriller called “Tracers” , which Godfrey said will put Lautner’s character into the underground world of parkour. “We’ve got a great young Spanish director, Daniel Benmayor … and it’s really tackling the subculture of parkour,” Godfrey said. “I think we all have seen parkour as action sequences in movies, but we haven’t delved into the denizens of that world and what that’s about. I kind of think of it as an action-heavy Gus Van Sant movie, because you really dig into this society.” When the film was announced, Lautner’s character was employed as a bike messenger, but Godfrey revealed that detail will likely change. “There’s a movie coming out that Joe Gordon-Levitt’s doing [‘Premium Rush’], and I saw a trailer and thought, ‘We should change our guy’s job because [Gordon-Levitt] did it so well,’ ” Godfrey explained. “That’s really just a jumping off point in the movie, so it’s easy to change.” We then asked whether, before landing the role, Lautner demonstrated proof of his parkour moves — the art of which involves moving quickly through any environment via jumping, rolling and running. “Honestly, one of the reasons we went to him is that in ‘New Moon,’ he does that thing where he goes up the tree, and that was something that I was there watching him train every day and realized how extraordinary he was athletically,” Godfrey recalled. “He almost doesn’t need the wires.” Don’t forget to cast your vote for Lautner’s nominated movie, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” to win big at this year’s MTV Movie Awards . It all goes down at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, at 9 p.m. ET/PT this Sunday, June 3. Related Videos Behind The Scenes At The 2012 MTV Movie Awards

Chris Brown Under Fire For Dog-Breeding Business

Must be Friday. Chris Brown is stirring up controversy once again, but no pop singers or plate glass windows were bashed beyond recognition this time. This time, he’s not in trouble with the law though. It’s just his apparent side business breeding dogs and selling them for profit that has people riled up. The R&B superstar is drawing heat from animal-rights activists, obviously, who want him instead to promote adoptions of animals from shelters. On Monday, Brown’s manager-mother, Joyce Hawkins, posted a link on her Twitter to CB Breeds, a website featuring this cute photo of her son and a pup. CB Breeds is offering seven fully vaccinated American pit bull terrier pups for $1,000 a piece. Needless to say, the alleged puppy mill drew howls of protest. While CB is a perfectly legitimate enterprise, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was quick to issue a statement condemning him: “This is a moneymaking scheme, and Brown will count the suckers who fall for it as he counts the money on the way to the bank,” PETA said. “There is no such thing as a responsible breeder while wonderful dogs are being put down in animal shelters across the country for lack of a good home.” “Shelters will count the bodies in the barrel. As Justin Bieber , Kellan Lutz and [other responsible celebrities] always say, “Adopt, never buy.” The Los Angeles chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, meanwhile, decried what it called his “backyard breeding.” Said spcaLA president Madeline Bernstein: “There is no reason to breed and produce more pit bull puppies when there are pit bull puppies waiting for homes in every shelter in America.”

‘The Man Was a Giant’: NYC Film Guru Amos Vogel Dead at 91

Sad news out of Manhattan: Amos Vogel, whose championing of foreign and independent film changed the direction of modern cinema over the last half-century, has passed away. He was 91. Vogel’s Cinema 16 events, introduced in 1947, battled censors and opened viewers’ eyes to the likes of Roman Polanski, Yasujirō Ozu, Robert Bresson, John Cassavetes and scores of other auteurs — in some cases before the word “auteur” meant anything. He also co-founded the New York Film Festival, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary as the city’s leading light of movie culture. Over at the Web site of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which as recently as last fall hosted Vogel to kick off a countdown to this year’s milestone NYFF, Eugene Hernandez offers a nice look back at the film firebrand’s life — including a statement by Vogel devotee Martin Scorsese: “If you’re looking for the origins of film culture in America, look no further than Amos Vogel. Between Cinema 16 (which he ran with his beloved wife Marcia and which opened our eyes to Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, Bruce Conner, Kenneth Anger, Cassavetes’ Shadows, and hundreds of other visionary films and filmmakers), The New York Film Festival (which he co-founded with Richard Roud), and his book Film As a Subversive Art , Amos opened the doors to every possibility in film viewing, film exhibition, film curating, film appreciation. He was also unfailingly generous, encouraging and supportive of so many young filmmakers, including me when I was just starting to make my first pictures. No doubt about it – the man was a giant.” Vogel, who turned 91 a week ago today, passed away surrounded by family in the Greenwich Village apartment he shared with his late wife Marcia, who died in 2009. Paul Cronin’s 2004 documentary about Vogel, Film as a Subversive Art: Amos Vogel and Cinema 16 , is viewable in its entirety below. R.I.P. Jennifer Lawrence Compares Katniss Everdeen to… Kim Kardashian?!?

On March 23, Jennifer Lawrence will bring one of the most intriguing, tough-minded, well-written young heroines to the big screen in The Hunger Games . So you can imagine our surprise when the actress, in a featured interview with this month’s Parade , compared Katniss Everdeen to one of the least interesting, most wooden and rarely-dressed individuals out there, Kim Kardashian . Why do you think so many people relate to the books , the magazine asked the rising star? Replied Lawrence: “I was watching the Kardashian girl getting divorced, and that’s a tragedy for anyone. But they’re using it for entertainment, and we’re watching it. The books hold up a terrible kind of mirror: This is what our society could be like if we became desensitized to trauma and to each other’s pain.” Hear that, people?!? Continue to tune in to E! every week on Sunday nights and we’ll soon be sending our teenagers out to kill each other all in the name of sport! Just something to consider. With just days until the biggest premiere of the year, check out the official Hunger Games trailer now!

Kate Middleton: A Royal, Scouting Role Model

Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton covers the latest issue of Scouting, a U.K. magazine dedicated to promoting … scouting. And specifically volunteer work! The 30-year-old is now the February/March cover girl on the publication, a fitting choice after she performed some private volunteer work with the scouts. “Part of her role as volunteer is to help below the radar,” says a source of Kate’s work with girl and boy scouts and their younger counterparts, the Beavers. The scouts hope the duchess will help Kate Middleton run a variety of activities relevant to her skills and interests, and she’s likely to be popping into some groups’ regular meetings near her home on Anglesey, North Wales, and elsewhere. Inside the magazine, adventurer-broadcaster Bear Grylls pays tribute to Kate: “It is how we change our society, many people doing a little bit,” he says. The scouts are one of five charities she chose to patronize in her royal role. Kate is set to start officially touring some of them next month. She and husband Prince William are due back from vacation in Mustique soon. William then heads to the Falkland Islands for military duty next month.

Rick Santorum’s Iowa Caucus Staffers Have Faith

‘The momentum in Iowa will help Santorum get to the next level,’ conservative candidate’s supporter tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Rick Santorum attends a “Rock the Caucus” event at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images DES MOINES, Iowa — Almost every candidate in the Republican presidential field has gotten a chance to be the front-runner so far. But in the days leading up to Tuesday night’s (January 3) all-important first contest, the Iowa caucus , former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is definitely peaking at just the right time. The staunchly conservative family-values candidate, who was polling in the single digits for much of last year, has surged in the past few weeks and is now a close third behind Representative Ron Paul and leading candidate Mitt Romney . At a campaign rally Tuesday morning at a “Rock the Caucus” event in the gymnasium of Valley High School in West Des Moines, his staffers told MTV News they were feeling bullish about his prospects. “Santorum is a huge supporter of faith and family. I truly believe that supporting the family … will have a trickle-up effect on our society in America,” said Jonathan Gehman, 29. “Kids who grow up in strong families will get good jobs and have good morals and high integrity that will build this country.” As he’s spoken to people on the phone over the past few weeks, Gehman said a number were unaware of Santorum, but admitted that the more they heard about him and saw him on the news, the more they liked what he was saying. “The energy is going to carry into tonight, and the momentum in Iowa will help Santorum get to the next level,” he predicted. Fellow staffer Ryan Rutt, 26, said Santorum resonates with him because of the candidate’s views on limited government. “He believes in people and not in the government fixing our problems,” Rutt said. “He’s all about smaller government, people unleashing their own innovation and not having the government take care of us.” Plus, Rutt said without naming names, he feels Santorum (who calls himself “Steady Eddie”) has had a consistent message and has not flip-flopped on his beliefs. While Santorum is known for holding a socially conservative hard line on issues such as abortion and gay rights, Rutt said he thinks his candidate might actually benefit from the youth support that has buoyed another late-surging candidate, libertarian Paul, who has a more socially liberal slate of views. “There’s a lot of youth support for Ron Paul now, but I think the core message of principles that they’re excited about Rick Santorum also has,” he said. “They get excited about freedom, they get excited about liberty, and that’s what I get excited about. While Ron Paul has sort of a sexy appeal, I think that they will quickly realize when Santorum comes around that he has a lot of those same core principles and that’s why they’ll get behind Rick Santorum.” MTV is on the scene in Iowa!
