Tonight’s the Night to Really See Our Magnificent Planet Jupiter! Lots of Photos, Even a Map, to Help You Enjoy Your Experience

Photos: Jewels of Jupiter By Joe Rao updated 8/25/2010 1:52:00 PM ET For many weeks, the planet that has dominated our evening sky has been brilliant Venus, visible low in the west-southwest sky for about 90 minutes after sunset. But after Venus sets, it is Jupiter that takes over for the rest of the night, outshining everything in the night sky but the moon. This week, Jupiter — the solar system's largest planet — rises around 8:45 p.m. local daylight time. On Thursday evening, if youre facing east soon after 9 p.m., you'll see the nearly full moon standing about 6 degrees above Jupiter. Your clenched fist held at arm's length measures about 10 degrees in width, so just over half of a fist will separate Jupiter from the moon. The two objects will remain visible through the rest of the night, peaking toward the south at around 3 a.m., at an altitude that measures more than halfway from the horizon to the point directly overhead (the zenith). Jupiter rules In the coming weeks we will see Jupiter loom as large and as bright as it ever can get from our earthly vantage point, because it's nearing perihelion — that point in its 12-year orbit that places it nearest to the sun. Jupiter now appears 11 percent larger and more than one and a half times brighter than it did back in 2005, when it was near aphelion (that point in its orbit farthest from the sun). Even steadily held 7-power binoculars will show Jupiter as a tiny disk. A small telescope will do much better, while in larger instruments, Jupiter resolves into a series of red, yellow, tan and brown shadings, as well as a wealth of other telescopic detail. Amateur astronomers have been imaging this big planet all summer long as it has been approaching the Earth. In less than a month, on Sept. 21, the planet will be in opposition. That's when Jupiter is nearest to Earth and shining in the sky all night long, from sunset to sunrise. And don't forget Jupiter's four major moons, discovered 400 years ago by Galileo. They can be seen in any telescope and even binoculars. They orbit Jupiter so quickly (with orbital periods ranging from 1.68 days for Io to 16.7 days for Callisto) that they change their appearance from night to night. Size (and distance) matters When you look at the moon and Jupiter on Thursday night, you might ponder the difference in both their sizes and distances. The moon, of course, far outshines Jupiter — by more than 9 magnitudes, or a brightness ratio of 4,370 to 1. But the moon is also much smaller than Jupiter. The moon's diameter is 2,158 miles (3,473 kilometers), while Jupiter's is 88,846 miles (142,984 km). What makes the moon loom so much larger and brighter is its distance. On Thursday night, the moon will be 251,200 miles (404,270 kilometers) from Earth. But Jupiter will be 1,496 times more distant: 375.9 million miles (605 million kilometers) away. Gyrating Jupiter? I recently received an e-mail from Linda Francese of Brookfield, Conn., involving an interesting observation made by her son, which likely involved a sighting of Jupiter. She wrote: “My son, Johnny woke me up at 2 a.m. to look at a 'star' that was moving. His friend had called him and told him about it. Johnny walked over to his house (he lives a house away) and they called another friend to come over. The three of them were watching this 'star' go back and forth. Do you know anything about this?” I'm pretty certain that the “star” that Johnny and his friends saw was Jupiter. So why did it appear to move? Likely they experienced what is called the “autokinetic effect.” This is a phenomenon of human visual perception in which a stationary, small point of light in an otherwise dark or featureless environment appears to move. Many sightings of UFOs have also been attributed to the autokinetic effect's action on stars or planets. Psychologists attribute the perception of movement where there is none to “small, involuntary movements of the eyeball.” The autokinetic effect can also be enhanced by the power of suggestion: If one person reports that a light is moving, others will be more likely to report the same thing. Currently, Jupiter is shining in the constellation Pisces, a star pattern that consists chiefly of faint stars. Under a clear, dark sky with no moon nearby, Jupiter will appear to shine with little or no competition from other nearby stars. If a person stares at Jupiter over a span of perhaps 15 to 30 seconds, it's quite possible for the autokinetic effect to kick in and cause Jupiter to gyrate or perhaps move in a small circle. Next week, when the moon has moved out of Jupiter's vicinity and the surrounding sky is dark, try staring at Jupiter and see if it'll move for you like it did for Johnny and his friends. NASA’s Kepler Telescope Detects Possible Earth-Size Planet

August 26, 2010 Telescope Detects Possible Earth-Size Planet By KENNETH CHANG Astronomers are quickly closing in on Earth-size planets elsewhere in the galaxy as they find planetary systems that look more and more like our solar system. Scientists working with NASA’s Kepler satellite reported Thursday that they might have spotted a planet just 1.5 times the diameter of Earth around a Sun-like star 2,000 light-years away. If that planet is made of similar stuff as Earth, its mass would be three to four times as much. “We’re still in the process of confirming this candidate is a planet,” said Matthew Holman, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, during a NASA-sponsored news conference on Thursday. Dr. Holman is the lead author of an article describing the discoveries that the journal Science published on its Web site. This is the first announcement of a candidate Earth-size planet by the Kepler mission, which launched a one-ton orbiter in March 2009 to search for planets like ours. The planet was among more than 700 candidate planets that the team announced spotting in June. The Kepler team also observed, more definitively, two Saturn-size planets around the same star, known as Kepler-9. On Tuesday, a European team reported what may be an even smaller planet, with mass as little as 1.4 times that of Earth, around a star 127 light-years away. In the past 15 years, astronomers have discovered close to 500 such extrasolar planets. At first, they uncovered huge gas giant planets that orbited extremely close to the stars. But as detection methods improved, astronomers began to find planets closer in size to Earth and planetary systems that contain nearly as many planets as our solar system. The Earth-size planet seen by the European astronomers appears to be one of seven circling the star, HD 10180, located in the constellation Hydrus. Christophe Lovis of the University of Geneva, who led the observations, said the group was certain about the existence of five of the planets, all about the size of Neptune, but squeezed into orbits closer to the star than Mars is to the Sun. Dr. Lovis said they were slightly less certain about the smallest planet. “For this one, we have about 1 percent false alarm possibility,” Dr. Lovis said. “For us, 99 percent is just not enough to be completely sure.” The team also tentatively detected a larger, Saturn-size planet farther from the star. Neither of the slightly-bigger-than-Earth planets is Earth-like. Both have orbits very close to their stars that would sear the surfaces. “If one particular word can describe planetary systems today, it’s ‘diverse,’ “ said Douglas N. C. Another Solar System Like our Own?

There is another Sun-like star out there with an intriguing family of planets orbiting about and it could be the closest parallel to our own solar system that astronomers have found yet. European astronomers discovered a planetary system containing at least five planets, orbiting the star HD 10180, with evidence that two other planets may be present. If confirmed, one of those would have the lowest mass ever found. “We have found what is most likely the system with the most planets yet discovered,” says Christophe Lovis, who led the team. “This remarkable discovery also highlights the fact that we are now entering a new era in exoplanet research: the study of complex planetary systems and not just of individual planets. Studies of planetary motions in the new system reveal complex gravitational interactions between the planets and give us insights into the long-term evolution of the system.” To make this system even more intriguing, the team also found evidence that the distances of the planets from their star follow a regular pattern, as also seen in our Solar System. “This could be a signature of the formation process of these planetary systems,” said team member Michel Mayor. HD 10180, is located 127 light years away in the southern constellation of Hydrus. The five confirmed planets are large, about the size of Neptune — between 13 and 25 Earth masses —with orbital periods ranging from between six and 600 days. The planets’ distances from the star ranges from 0.06 and 1.4 times the Earth–Sun distance. “We also have good reasons to believe that two other planets are present,” said Lovis. One would be a Saturn-like planet (with a minimum mass of 65 Earth masses) orbiting in 2200 days. The other would be the least massive exoplanet ever discovered, with a mass of about 1.4 times that of the Earth. It is very close to its host star, at just 2 percent of the Earth–Sun distance. One “year” on this planet would last only 1.18 Earth-days.“ This object causes a wobble of its star of only about 3 km/hour— slower than walking speed — and this motion is very hard to measure,” says team member Damien S
