Cell Phones to Get Clean Energy Boost, Increasing by 41%

Photo via Abi Skipp A new report from Pike Research forcasts good news for renewable energy and mobile base stations (the wireless communications station used to connect cell phone networks). Clean energy will power 4.5% of base stations by 2014, and while that doesn’t sound like much, it’s a boost up from the mere 0.11% in 2010, or a 40.9% increase. But even more exciting is the percentage of base stations powered by renewable energy in developing countries will jot up to 8% by 2014. With

The Mosel valley. Photo by Dittmeyer via Flickr On the steep hillsides of the Mosel valley , in southwestern Germany, the vineyards are tended by hand, as they have been since Roman times. It is not uncommon for a modern vintner to have a family history in the region going back hundreds of years. But while this long heritage of viniculture has produced the world’s best

Solar-Powered Camera Strap Saves The Day

Images via Yanko Design We’ve seen solar in strange places for gadgets, including directly embedded on gadgets like laptops and cell phones. That’s not the most ideal location for solar power because it means leaving an electronic device in direct sunlight, which no owner really wants to do. Another alternative is solar cells sewn into clothing — but even that can turn out badly, as

Lumenhaus From Virginia Tech Wins Solar Decathlon Europe

image via inhabitat inhabitat cheers USA! USA! as Virginia Tech wins the Solar Decathlon over some tough competition. It is a surprising win for a number of reasons; the unit was in the Solar Decathlon 2009 and did not win there. To my eye, it was over-teched, with its aerogel walls electrochromic glass and ground source heat pump for an 800 square foot unit- serious engineering overkill. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weird Solar Device of the Day: Solar Powered Football Crafted Just In Time for World Cup

Image via Greendix A solar powered football? Sure, we could see kinetic powered, but solar powered? That might be one of the dumbest uses for Greendix’s new solar panels that can be shaped into all sorts of strange things. The company has taken the black leather patches of a traditional soccer ball and replaced them with solar cells to try and show off their product. But, what does the solar cells power? Why, a “tracking sound” emitted every time it’s kicked. And why did they do that? The company states it’s so that one day visually impaired people can play football. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Unplugged: Organic and Affordable Solar Power

The Millennium Technology Prize trophy, named “Peak,” features a silicon tip. Back in 1991, Professor Michael Graetzel from the Lausanne Polytechnic invented what’s now called the Graetzel Cell , a non-photovoltaic solar cell made of a layer of titanium dioxide, glass and a dye from fruit that absorbs sunlight like the chlorophyll in green leaves. The Swiss professor has since continued deve… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Solar Powered Backpack Even Steve Jobs Would Wear

Image via Yanko Design Designing snazzy solar accessories has proven to be a tough job, judging by what we’ve seen come off of the drawing board . Normally, solar bags are rather clunky things that don’t work all that well, with just a small handful of expensive exceptions . One designer has decided it’s worth going into more brand-sp… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Guru Memorial Concert Should Involve DJ Premier, Solar Says

‘It couldn’t be [a tribute] without them,’ he tells MTV News, despite tensions between the two. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Solar Photo: MTV News Although tensions between Solar and DJ Premier remain high, the controversial producer said he would like to reach out to the Gang Starr member to join him for a memorial concert he’s planning for Guru later this year. “Not only Premier, but the whole Gang Starr Foundation — everybody, for sure,” Solar told MTV News. “It couldn’t be [a tribute] without them. Plus, the list of artists Guru and I have already compiled that would go with it, that would be brilliant.” Solar said he and Guru had long planned to host an event, whether he recovered from his health issues or not. Since the Gang Starr rapper died last week , though, Solar has been vilified by fans for releasing a farewell letter purportedly written by Guru. In the controversial message, Guru assailed Premier and only referred to his groupmate as his “former DJ.” Solar denied claims that he wrote the letter, but Premier remains skeptical . Premier released his own statement following Guru’s death, a touching memorial to his friend. During a radio “salute” to his fallen Gang Starr cohort, Premier repeatedly disparaged Solar, writing him off as a jealous opportunist. Solar, for his part, stands by Guru’s authorship of the letter, yet he distanced himself from the remarks and said he now has to make the best decisions for the current situation. “At the end of the day, Guru’s statement is Guru’s statement, and that’s Guru,” he said. “I’m my own man, just like he was his own man. I have to make decisions as life goes on that’s beneficial to all involved. I haven’t had a chance to sit down with DJ Premier. Hopefully now will be the time, in the near future, even on this particular matter, and speak on things. It’s my intention that everybody understand I foster the concepts of peace and harmony. And I believe as time goes on and feelings settle that this will happen. And willfully, this benefit concert will be one way of speeding that along.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below.
