Pop star is in goddess mode in snippet from upcoming video, which band teased during Canadian tour stop. By John Mitchell Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Rihanna Photo: Getty Images Coldplay teased the upcoming video for their latest Mylo Xyloto single, “Princess of China,” during a tour stop in Edmonton, Canada, giving concertgoers their first look at Rihanna rocking the look she tweeted about from the video’s set in March. During the band’s performance of the song, the Barbadian pop diva appeared on an overhead video in full-on goddess mode with multiple sets of hands fanning out behind her and moving to the beat of the song. The guys of Coldplay are big fans of the “We Found Love” singer and told MTV News last year that they were excited to work with her because it was an opportunity to cross genres. “Her bit on our record is my favorite bit,” frontman Chris Martin told MTV News in September. “When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it. And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we’ve been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music.” Coldplay have not yet announced when the full “Princess of China” video will premiere. Rihanna, who is also featured in Drake’s “Take Care” video , is readying her own clip for her new single “Where Have You Been.” She hasn’t said when the video will debut, but she posted some sexy stills from the clip to her Facebook earlier this week. Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton hit the stage with their teams, while Maroon 5 premiered ‘Payfone’ with Wiz Khalifa. By John Mitchell Jesse Campbell on “The Voice” Photo: NBC Things were shaken up Monday night (April 16) on “The Voice” with the surprise introduction of “instant eliminations,” a new rule forcing each judge to send one of their team members home at the end of the episode. The first judges forced to send one of their own packing were Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton , whose teams took the stage Monday. An additional member of each team will be voted off by the public on Tuesday. Each of the superstar judges — with the notable exception of Cee Lo Green — also hit the stage to perform, with Levine’s band Maroon 5 even debuting a new song with Wiz Khalifa . First to hit the stage was teenage country girl RaeLynn. Before performing, she and her coach Blake bonded over being “real country.” I’m a real country artist,” RaeLynn boasted, and Blake suited her up with the perfect song, hitmaker Jason Aldean’s “She’s Country.” RaeLynn’s performance of the song won over all the judges. “Man, I’m gonna say, you make me want to sing country,” Christina championed. But Blake had the biggest words of praise. “This is the most proud moment I’ve had of any person on my team,” Blake said of RaeLynn’s performance. Next up was fan and judge favorite Jesse Campbell, who delivered an expectedly excellent rendition of Beyonc
‘Boyfriend’ clip is going to ‘make people like the song more,’ singer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend Photo: Walmart/ Island Justin Bieber is gradually giving fans a taste of his forthcoming video for “Boyfriend.” In the latest tease for the clip, which he tweeted out , several more shots are revealed. They include a watery, booming speaker, Bieber whispering in a pretty girl’s ear and the singer standing in silhouette, snapping his fingers in front of the moon. “I think people are going to be really happy [with the video] and … I think it’s going to make people like the song more,” Bieber told MTV News on the set of the video, directed by Colin Tilley. “The album, in general, is just really new and fresh and I think people are going to be really happy to hear it.” The song certainly represents a more mature sound for the 18-year-old, who has abandoned the doo-wop-influenced pop of his past for a Justin Timberlake vibe . But if fans think Believe will sound like “Boyfriend,” Bieber explains that this track offers only a sampling of the album’s overall sound. “I think it’s part of it,” he said. “I mean, my whole album is so different and every song’s different on the album, and I think that what’s special about it is nothing sounds the same.” After Bieber teased that he’d be hitting the studio with his mentor Usher , the two tweeted a bit more about working together. “Ohh … and trust we got a duet coming for ‘LOOKING 4 MYSELF’ and ‘BELIEVE,’ ” Usher tweeted about working with the teen star on both of their forthcoming albums. “He has come a long way. Proud to see his evolution as an artist!” Believe will drop later this year, with the “Boyfriend” video dropping sometime soon. Looking for Myself, Usher’s next album, will be released in June. Live-action film will tell ‘Sleeping Beauty’ villain’s side of the story. By Fallon Prinzivalli Angelina Jolie Photo: Getty Images Get excited, villain fans: Walt Disney Studios announced the U.S. release date for “Maleficent” — March 14, 2014! Based on Disney’s animated classic “Sleeping Beauty,” this live-action movie will delve into the origins of Maleficent and what caused her to curse Princess Aurora. The film stars Angelina Jolie as the title role and will show a different side to the evil fairy. Before casting and filming was finalized, Jolie told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz she would love to play the titular sorceress. “It’s all new and being discussed, but I loved her when I was a little girl. She was my favorite.” When we caught up with the actress a year later at the red carpet for “Kung Fu Panda 2,” she confirmed “there’s a great script.” The script was penned by Linda Woolverton, and Jolie admitted she had loved it for a very long time. Even though the movie tells Maleficent’s version of the story doesn’t mean Aurora will be portrayed as the bad guy . “It’s not anti-princess,” Jolie told Entertainment Weekly about the film. “But it’s the first time they’re looking at this epic woman. … I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities.” Jolie believes “Maleficent” will be a positive film for young girls to see because of its message of seeing a story from someone else’s point of view. But it isn’t just the script that fans can look forward to; Robert Stromberg — who has worked on “Avatar” and “Alice in Wonderland” in the past — will direct, which means audiences can prepare themselves for stunning visuals as well. Teams Adam and Cee Lo hit the stage to sing for America’s votes. By John Mitchell Jamar Rogers on “The Voice” Photo: NBC Last week on “The Voice,” Teams Blake and Christina hit the live stage and saw their numbers dwindle by two contestants each after all was said and done. On Monday night (April 9), it was Team Cee Lo and Team Adam’s turn to sing for their survival in the competition and secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Levine and Green, out of his Elvis clown costume from last week but sporting the bright red he’s been rocking all season, seemed in good spirits at the top of the show, even joking with Blake about how underdressed he was. Remember: The top three vote-getters from each team will move on automatically, while the bottom three will perform for their respective coach (and America, duh!) Tuesday night, hoping to secure Cee Lo or Adam’s lone “save” to stay in the hunt to be the next “Voice.” Away we go! Up first was Team Adam’s Katrina Parker, singing the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight.” Adam’s big advice for Katrina was to stay away from belting too hard to avoid comparisons to Adele. She did what he said but drew mixed reviews from the judges, who felt the song wasn’t a good showcase for Parker’s talents. Team Cee Lo’s first contestant to take the stage was Cheesa, whose play on the ’70s classic “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was brimming with coach Cee Lo’s signature Technicolor swagger and had the judges championing her showmanship. “That was like watching ‘Solid Gold,’ ” Blake said. “That had Cee Lo written all over it.” Team Adam’s Tony Lucca has become an early favorite for one big reason: He used to share the TV screen with coach Christina Aguilera — who’s been looking better than ever with toned-down makeup and hair since the live shows began — on Disney’s “The Mickey Mouse Club.” Sensing what Aguilera ultimately called out — that he can be a “one-dimensional” performer, who has been helped along by his connection to her — Adam pushed Lucca to go more pop with Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” but Lucca’s rocker growl struggled through the song’s falsetto moments. Kim Yarbrough was reliably strong if imperfect singing Adele, but when are we going to put a moratorium on tackling Adele? In its relatively short life, “Rolling in the Deep” has been pillaged by reality-TV singing contestants almost as much as, well, Christina’s “Beautiful” circa 2004-ish “American Idol.” Boston mechanic James Massone from Team Cee Lo got tossed a curveball with Norah Jones’ “Don’t Know Why” and proved himself both a chameleon with a killer falsetto (take lessons, Tony Lucca) and quite a lady’s man. Blake was his most enthusiastic supporter, declaring, “I almost threw my panties on the stage just now.” (And here we thought he only got worked up like that when his best bro hit the stage. Hope Adam doesn’t get jealous!) Meanwhile, the night’s next two performers, gravel-voiced rocker Juliet Simms and unique-voiced Mathai, played right to their strengths with Sting’s “Roxanne” and a jazzy remix of John Legend’s “Ordinary People,” respectively, and earned the expected raves. “You did the best of anyone who’s performed so far,” Adam said of Simms. “Your voice is dope, ” Xtina concurred. Ultra-confident rocker Tony Vincent was up next, singing “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” If the Broadway-meets-dictator-podium stage setup was strange, his vocal performance was anything but. He reeled it in from previous performances and proved he could control his powerful voice. Simms, Mathai and Vincent were definitely tough acts to follow, but subdued Karla Davis, singing “Airplanes,” and Team Cee Lo’s former model Erin Martin were picked for the task. Christina called Karla the “biggest surprise of the night,” while Blake criticized the song choice, and even Adam commented that Davis did a stronger job when she was less nervous while they were practicing in the rehearsal space. Martin certainly brought serious production values to her take on the Bangles’ “Walk Like an Egyptian” (with her chariot and man dancers, she was giving us Madonna at the Super Bowl vibes, albeit in a much smaller way) but forgot to bring much aggression to her actual performance. “Here we go again with the male strippers,” Blake commented. “I think Blake just bought a one-way ticket to Boner Town,” Adam quipped in response. “And it’s not refundable,” he hit back. It’s never a great sign when the judges are more consumed by the production than the performance when you’re on a show called “The Voice,” is it? The folks behind the scenes wisely chose two of the show’s best-known showstoppers for the end of the night, saving Team Adam’s preppy Pip and Team Cee Lo’s Jamar Rogers for last. Adam wanted Pip to break out of his shell and gave him the chance to show off his rock-star bona fides with “When You Were Young.” Pip brought flash, but Christina wasn’t loving it, saying she didn’t feel like he was connected to the song and had early pitch issues. Adam agreed; Pip’s got the voice, but he’s missing the grit and, should he move forward, that is something they will have to work on. Closing out the night, Rogers hit the stage in his best Michael Jackson jacket for Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way.” The audience loved it and so did the judges, and Jamar, with his unstoppable stage presence and dramatic backstory of overcoming drug addiction and living with HIV, continues to seem like a front-runner in the competition. ‘This is actually a special record for me,’ Wale tells MTV News of his new video with Curren$y, shot at an Atlanta airport. By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX Curren$y and Wale on the set of “What it Look Like” Photo: MTV News Curren$y and Wale weren’t even finished recording their current single “What It Look Like” before they decided to shoot a video for the song. “While we were doin’ the record, [Wale] was like, ‘We gotta shoot a video.’ I was like, ‘I know,’ ” Curren$y told MTV News. In the video, which was shot in an Atlanta airport, Spitta and Wale trade verses in an airplane hangar while a full band backs them up. The duo released the song, which will appear on Curren$y upcoming Warner Bros. release The Stoned Immaculate, last week, and on Sunday, they premiered the video on MTV2’s “Sucker Free” countdown. In 2008, the two MCs appeared on the cover of XXL ‘s annual Freshman issue and have collaborated quite a bit in the past, most notably on Wale’s 2009 mixtape track “Wordplay” and Maybach Music’s “Rise” last year. The two are more than collaborators, though; they’re also friends. In fact, that’s the way Curren$y prefers it. He tends to stay away from working with people he doesn’t know. “That’s the only people I would work with,” he said. “Anything I do would never be a reach-out.” The Jet Life spitter remembers coincidently being in the same studio with Wale — that’s how “What It Look Like” came about. “We were working in the same studio and he came in there like, ‘I think I got a hook,’ ” Curren$y said of Wale. While on the set of the video, Wale told MTV News that the song’s lyrics came so naturally to him, he didn’t even have to write them down. Instead, he went into the vocal booth and constructed his verse without pen or paper. “This is actually a special record for me. This is the first time I went into the booth without writing a verse,” the Maybach Music standout said. “I’m glad we got to do a dope visual to it.” What do you think of Curren$y and Wale’s “What It Look Like” video? Singer’s first Believe single sells more than 500,000 copies in its first week. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: Walmart/ Island As expected, Justin Bieber ‘s new single “Boyfriend” has made an impressive debut. After dropping last Monday, the song has sold 520,000 downloads in its first week. The number is particularly meaningful since it places him at #2 in all-time first-week singles sales. Flo Rida’s track “Right Round,” featuring a then up-and-coming Ke$ha, has the Biebs beat, according to Hits Daily Double . Flo’s track sits at #1 with 636,000 units moved. Other big sellers include the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” with 465,000 in downloads (#3), and Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” selling 447,000 (#4). Not only are fans gobbling up the single, but his real-life girlfriend, Selena Gomez, has given the song two thumbs up. “Is it my ring tone? No. I didn’t even know you could make it a ring tone,” Gomez told E! News . “It is a great song.” Bieber is hardly resting on his laurels. The teen star is back in the studio working on Believe. He explained on Twitter that the album, for which “Boyfriend” is the lead single, will go there. “Here making music addressing the past and the rumors, clearing it all up in the music. Im putting it all out there on this album. #BELIEVE,” he tweeted . He also tweeted out silly videos of himself acting goofy on mock-up sets of the “Boyfriend” video, which he shot last week. In one, he stands in front of a green screen of icy land and in another he stands in front of a green screen of a fireplace. Of course, Bieber already shared that there really will be fire and ice in the video. “The concept of this video, I mean it’s not like a steady concept,” he explained to MTV News on the Cali-based set in between shots. “It’s not like ‘Justin follows this girl to this spot.’ No, it’s a bunch of amazing scenes: Like a fire scene, we have an ice scene. “It’s kind of like bouncing back and forth,” he said. “And then there’s scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It’s fun.” Related Artists Justin Bieber Black Eyed Peas Lady Gaga

‘I wanted to make sure I got Wayne on something that was heartfelt,’ Mac tells MTV News of Macadelic standout. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News Mac Miller hasn’t been around very long, but his ever-growing catalog has a lot of noteworthy tunes. The gold-selling “Donald Trump” is a crowd-pleaser at shows, as is his jump-up-and-down party-starter “Knock, Knock.” But Mac’s recent Lil Wayne collaboration “The Question” already ranks right up there for him. “This is one of my favorite records that I’ve ever done,” Mac told MTV News of the Macadelic standout. Miller surprised fans when he released Macadelic last week. It wasn’t the quality of songs that stood out — Mac’s fans have come to expect the best from the Pittsburgh MC — instead it was Macadelic ‘s features that stood out to many. With a guest list that includes Kendrick Lamar, Sir Michael Rocks, Casey Veggies, Juicy J and Cam’ron, it was Weezy’s multiplatinum name that made folks do a double-take. Getting Weezy on your mixtape is a no-brainer for any MC with enough clout to pull it off, but Miller didn’t want to get the Young Money boss on just any old track. To him, “The Question” was special. “This song is a real meaningful song to me, man, and I wanted to make sure I got Wayne on something that was heartfelt,” he said. “I got him on a record that I was saying something and not just talkin’ sh–, so this record right here really kinda deals with a question that I’ve been goin’ through in my own head.” “Sometimes I wonder who the f— I am,” Mac spits to start the record off. The 20-year old MC then goes on to ponder his place in the world over a slow-rolling track produced by Wally West and ID Labs. “I feel like in a lot of people’s lives, at a certain point, you kind of just look in the mirror and try and think about who I am as a person and what am I supposed to do here, what am I doin’ with my time,” he explained. Often, Mac is criticized for releasing strictly party records, but on “The Question” he adds some depth to his catalog. Weezy, however, took a different approach, opening his rhyme while sitting in his Bentley, thinking about the plethora of women he has at his disposal. From there, Tunechi goes on about his machine gun, which he claims to treat like an infant, and, of course, his smoke. It’s classic Weezy. “Wayne came in and just killed the verse on the song,” Mac exclaimed. “It was perfect to hear him like that.” What do you think of Mac Miller and Lil Wayne’s “The Question”?
