Lindsay Lohan To Host ‘SNL’ For First Time Since 2006

Actress will return to ‘Saturday Night Live’ on March 3 with musical guest Jack White. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan Photo: Getty Live from New York, it’s Lindsay Lohan! The embattled actress will host “Saturday Night Live” on March 3, the show has confirmed. This will be the fourth time she takes the “SNL” stage, where she’ll be joined by musical guest Jack White. In a statement to CNN, her rep said, “Lindsay is very much looking forward to hosting SNL and working with the incredible cast, crew and writers to put on a memorable show.” Her probation restrictions are lifted in March, just in time for her to host. Meanwhile sources tell TMZ that Lohan called up “SNL” head honcho, Lorne Michaels, asking if she could host an episode this season. After several conversations, Michaels and Lohan settled on the March date. The source adds that Lohan has always loved hosting the show and looks to Michaels as a father figure. Since Lohan first hosted “SNL” back in 2004 at the tender age of 17, the actress has been through quite a lot, including multiple court appearances and several jail stints. In the years since, she’s had a hard time reigniting her once-thriving movie career. Most recently she was attached to a Linda Lovelace biopic , but she eventually lost the role. She last hosted “SNL” in 2006. While Lohan has had a hard time booking movie gigs, she did make headlines when she appeared in Playboy in December . In the issue, the actress opened up about her public woes. “Looking back, I probably would have listened to and taken more advice from the people whom I admire and would have followed through with it more,” she said. “My stubbornness at 18 and 19 years old got in the way. During the past five years, I’ve learned that time flies faster than you think, and because you only live once, you have to learn from your mistakes, live your dreams and be accountable.” Will Lindsay Lohan make a good “SNL” host? Rihanna And Chris Brown’s ‘Birthday Cake’ Remix: Fans React

‘People have to get past that ‘incident’ in ’09,’ one fan tweeted. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: FilmMagic On Monday night, Chris Brown and Rihanna dropped the long-prognosticated remix to Ri’s “Birthday Cake,” from her Talk That Talk album. The duo also dropped a remix of Brown’s Fortune track “Turn Up the Remix,” all on Rihanna’s 24th birthday. The producers behind the “Cake” track, Da Internz, promised that the remix would ” shock ,” and they didn’t lie. Considering that it was just three years ago that Brown assaulted Rihanna over Grammy weekend, the two coming together for the sexy duet marks a new chapter for the singers, one that has been met with varied reactions from fans. On one side of the argument are fans who appreciate the song regardless of the singers’ past. Speedy12 wrote, “First of all Rihanna has to live her life … people have to get past that ‘incident’ in ’09. You guys are forgetting he has never hit Rihanna b4 that time … THEY HAD A FIGHT!! Like most of us do … they have grown up and moved past that time. Role model or not … RIHANNA CAN’T LIVE FOR HER FANS … SHE LIVES FOR HER!! And the sooner you delusional ignorant idiots realize that, the quicker they, along with everyone else who’s quick to judge, can move on. LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!” Sandra D. had a similar reaction, writing, “I realllyyyyy loved BOTH Cake and the Turn Up The Music remix. They took a bold decision, but I believe it will show the world that it is finally time to move on and get back to making great music! LOVE Chris’ music video to Turn Up The Music too!” KringleChick wrote, “Loving both of these songs. Glad they were able to put the music first and let everything else stay behind. Both are great artists and these songs rock. Their voices are amazing together!” For other fans, however, their past is hard to ignore, and many readers met the release with disbelief and anger, citing the 2009 assault. “Why, Rihanna? Why?” LP54 wrote. “I know for lots of people it’s just a song, but for others it’s their role model saying it’s okay. Whether Rihanna likes it or not she is a role model. Her making this song is telling those girls that you can go back to him even if he has abused you. Chris has nothing to lose from this but she has sponsors, fans, and support from the media. With two songs, Riri could lose a lot.” What do you think of Chris Brown and Rihanna working together in light of their history? Sound off in the comments. Related Artists Rihanna Chris Brown

Fun. Find Breakout Anthem With ‘We Are Young’

First single from just-released Some Nights is ‘saying all the things to people that we want to say,’ guitarist Jack Antonoff tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Nate Ruess of Fun. Photo: MTV News Fun. ‘s “We Are Young” has become one of the year’s most-unlikely sensations, leaping all the way to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart — behind only Kelly Clarkson and Adele — thanks in no small part to massive digital sales, a plum feature on “Glee” and, of course, that iconic, chaotic music video. So now, with a certified hit to their credit, Fun. are gearing up for the next phase of their climb: the release of their second studio album, Some Nights , out Tuesday (February 21). It’s a whirling, ambitious listen, the sound of a band busting boundaries and reaching for bigger and better things — “It’s been a long time coming, and we want it to take over the world,” frontman Nate Ruess said — so it’s fitting that it’s been preceded by “We Are Young,” a song that very much busts boundaries, and gets unapologetically big. “That song, to us, is like bull’s-eye center of what we wanted to do with this album,” guitarist Jack Antonoff told MTV News. “It’s a brilliant song to have out as a single, because it’s saying all the things to people that we want to say. It’s showing how, artistically, [the album is] different, it’s showing all the influences brought by Jeff Bhasker, who produced the album, and all he brings from his hop-hop world, working with people like Kanye and Jay-Z. And it shows where we’ve moved with songwriting. “And one of our favorite things about ‘We Are Young’ is that, if it’s the center of the album, every song is sprouting out of it in different directions,” he continued. “And if you like the song, then I think the album’s just going to be a rollercoaster ride, because it just flies in every direction in and out of that song.” In that regard, “We Are Young” has also become Fun.’s de facto anthem — by their own admission, their first — the song that they feel speaks best for this band, at this moment, on the verge of very big things. “It’s pretty rare, because any other projects that we’ve done, I don’t think any of us have ever had that song that was like, ‘This is our band,’ ” Antonoff said. “We’re proud to say, ‘Listen to this one song, and then come listen to the rest. Here it is.’ ” Share your review of Fun.’s new album in the comments below!

Michael Jackson’s pop-culture defining Thriller music video helped usher in MTV era of music yet the song itself isn’t even among his top 50 Billboard charting hits, according to Billboard . Below we list Jackson’s best charting hits of his almost mystical music career as determined by Billboard. The selections aren’t as obvious as it may seem. His collaborations with former Beatle Paul McCartney have generated the most chart success for Jackson. Debuting in the music spotlight in 1964 as the front man and youngest sibling of Motown’s popular boy group the Jackson 5 before kicking off a solo career in 1971. Jackson became a transformative figure within music and pop culture with the release of his 1982 Thriller album and its supporting videos, which not only spawned the 14-minute horror cinematic opus that was the “Thriller” video but also MTV defining hits for chart toppers like “Billie Jean” and “Beat It”. Thriller would go on to be recognized as the greatest-selling album of all-time with over 100 million copies of the album sold, but Jackson, while still amassing a dizzying amount of fame as a performer (he’s garnered countless awards and has sold more than 750 million albums worldwide from Thriller and his other solo projects including Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995)) also became as much of a caricatured celebrity for the bizzare headlines was linked to. 10. ABC (1970) The Jackson 5 Billboard : “In somewhat of a case of chart fortune-telling, it was perhaps fitting that the Jackson 5′s second Hot 100 No. 1 dislodged the Beatles’ second-to-last No. 1, “Let It Be,” from the top of the chart, as arguably the most influential group in the history of pop music symbolically passed the baton to the format’s future King.” 8. I Want You Back (1970) The Jackson 5 Billboard : “Michael Jackson’s six-decade tenancy on the Billboard charts began the week of Nov. 15, 1969, when the then-11-year-old and his four brothers entered the chart at No. 90 with “I Want You Back.”” 7. Billie Jean (1982) Michael Jackson Billboard: “”Billie Jean” propelled the singer to a true worldwide sensation. With seven weeks at No. 1, the song introduced the “Thriller” album to the masses.” 1. Say Say Say (1983) Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson Billboard : “At six weeks, “Say” marks Jackson’s second-longest reign at No. 1 on the Hot 100. While “Billie Jean” spent one more week at No. 1 and two more weeks on the Hot 100 than “Say Say Say,” Jackson’s collaboration with McCartney spent more weeks in the top 10 (13 to 11), the top 20 (16 to 12), and the top 40 (18 to 17) than “Jean” did, making it his all-time biggest hit on the Billboard charts.”

Chris Brown Throws Masked Rave In ‘Turn Up’ Video

Co-directed by the singer, the video is the lead visual off Fortune. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Brown (file) Photo: Jeff Fusco/Getty Images Chris Brown turns up the music to a big 11 in his video for his song “Turn Up the Music.” The video, released on Friday (February 17), follows a well-dressed Brown while he enjoys a dance-filled night on the town. The video tracks Brown from drinking in the street, to hailing a futuristic hover-cab filled with masked creatures, to hitting a warehouse rave filled with even more masked people, all watched over by some woman who appears to be the queen of the party, gazing at everyone from her own perch. From there, the clip is an eye-catching spectacle of various dance routines with Brown displaying his signature smooth moves. During the video, the singer dons several outfits and looks that appear to pay homage to his own hero, Michael Jackson. Rocking well-tailored suits that are accessorized with fedoras and suspenders, Brown performs dancefloor acrobatics as lights and lasers dance around him. Brown’s dance moves are aggressive and in your face, but he is still light on his feet. At one point in the high-energy clip, the footage is slowed down as Brown does a flip. In another memorable scene, Brown dances alone in a rain-filled room, wearing white dress pants, a black tank and a fedora. As the song wraps up, he splits into three people, comes back together, takes off his shirt and throws it at the camera — and breaks the lens doing it. The eye-popping video was co-directed with Godfrey Tabarez and shot in Los Angeles earlier this month. Produced by the Underdogs and Fuego, it’s the lead single off Fortune, out March 16. He performed the song last Sunday at the Grammy Awards . What do you think of the “Turn Up the Music” video? Leave your comment below! Related Artists Chris Brown

Lil Wayne, Usher Help Romeo Santos ‘Revolutionize’ Bachata Music

‘It was the first time you hear an artist from the mainstream singing bachata,’ former Aventura frontman tells MTV News of single ‘Promise.’ By Christina Garibaldi Lil Wayne Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Romeo Santos , the former lead singer of the popular bachata group Aventura , has taken a new step in his career, venturing out on his own as a solo artist. Mixing his signature bachata flair with some R&B, he is showing fans a whole new side on his debut album, Formula, Vol. 1. Hoping to spread his unique sound and style to a mainstream audience, Santos enlisted Lil Wayne for his latest single, “All Aboard.” “This song ‘All Aboard,’ that tune allowed me to expand and kind of offer my audience something totally different because it’s not bachata — I’m singing English and that was really fun,” Santos recently told MTV News. “I was a little nervous about that, but people actually really accepted it.” Santos and Weezy recently shot the video for “All Aboard” in Miami; he called the clip “sexy,” “seductive” and “elegant,” but also revealed that this collaboration came very close to not making his album. “I was just like, I like the song but it’s missing something, and at first I couldn’t figure out what it was,” Santos said. “What we did was we left 16 bars open, and I was like, you know, who would rip this track? Lil Wayne. So we reached out. It barely made the album because he’s a busy dude, so he actually got on the record two months after we submitted it. It was like, if we don’t get his vocals in the next two days we hit, and we got it, so we made it and the song is just really great.” Wayne isn’t the only artist Santos pulled in for his album. On his last single, “Promise,” he teamed up with Usher , who last week joined him onstage at Santos’ first of three sold-out shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden. “I felt at that moment once again I was going to revolutionize bachata ’cause it was the first time that you hear an artist from the mainstream singing bachata,” Santos said. “It was a big deal.” What do you think of Romeo Santos’ solo debut? Whitney Houston Bonds With Mariah Carey In Rare 1998 Interview

‘Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words’ airs tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. By John Mitchell Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in 1998 Photo: MTV News Back in the fall of 1998, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey set aside their long-rumored rivalry and came together to record a duet, “When You Believe,” for the animated film “The Prince of Egypt.” An interview with the two divas from that time is one of the many rare moments unearthed for MTV’s live 30-minute tribute to the late singer, entitled “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words,” airing tonight (February 15) at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. Asked about the song and whether they’d ever experienced a miracle in their own lives, Houston was the first to respond, telling MTV, “Yeah, I have. That baby sitting right up there. That’s my miracle.” She was referring, of course, to a then-5-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown, her only child with ex-husband Bobby Brown. Bobbi Kristina has had a particularly difficult time dealing with the passing of her mother, and was herself rushed from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where Houston died , to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center less than 24 hours after her death. Bobbi was said to be “hysterical, exhausted and inconsolable,” sources close to the situation told TMZ . After Carey responds, “I don’t have a child, so I can’t say the same thing, but maybe one day I will,” Houston turns to her peer for a candid moment that seems like more of an aside between two new friends than an interview sound bite. “When you do, you will realize that is the ultimate miracle. If you think you’ve got records and you’ve done all this stuff and all that stuff, [it’s] nothing like that,” Houston says. “That’s a true love that costs nothing. Unconditional love.” Though they always insisted they were always on friendly terms, rumors of a rivalry between Houston and Carey persisted throughout the ’90s. Indeed, they were often pitted against each other on the music charts and by critics who declared their respective talents to be comparable. Even after they chose to silence rumors by recording “When You Believe” and conducting interviews together, the buzz continued. Some critics even believed they were trying to “outdo each other” during their performance of the song at the 1999 Academy Awards. Tune in as we celebrate the life of an icon with “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words” tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. Nicki Minaj Drops Fist-Pumping ‘Starships’ Single

‘There was so much love surrounding the making of the song,’ she says about Roman Reloaded track. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Nicki Minaj channels her inner pop princess for her just-released single “Starships.” The fist-pumping song dropped on Tuesday (February 14), and it’s club-ready and poised for crossover success. Thanks to its bouncy beat, Minaj’s sing-songy chorus and producer RedOne’s eye for Euro house-influenced pop music, Minaj may have a new “Super Bass.” It’s a blast of pop goodness in which Nicki raps and sings about partying and doing what feels good for you. The song is also full of signature Minaj sass and bravado. “Starships were meant to fly/ Hands up and touch the sky/ Can’t stop ’cause we’re so high/ Let’s do this one more time,” she declares on the feel-good chorus, before it repeats and evolves to a smashing, dance-floor-busting grind of beats, shouts and noises that are certain to get her Barbz on the floor. Minaj shines like a pop star the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez on the genre-busting track. But the song is also signature RedOne thanks to his keen ear for world music. That influence is felt on the song’s breakdowns, which recall smashes he’s made for J.Lo and Enrique Iglesias. “There was so much love surrounding the making of the song, because RedOne is just so sweet to work with,” Minaj told Ryan Seacrest . “He just sent me that one day and he said, ‘Hey, I got something for you!’ I was like ‘You got to be kidding me, right?’ I went to the studio and started writing … scratch that … I didn’t even write the first verse! That was just me mumbling and just saying the first thing that came to my head, and we recorded it, because I just felt like, let’s go to the beach … let’s go get away. It was just so good. It feels good!” “Starship” is the latest track to get a preview before Nicki drops Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded on April 1. On Sunday she gave fans an over-the-top taste of “Roman Holiday” when she performed it during the Grammy Awards . During the interview with Seacrest, Minaj shared that Reloaded will focus on the many sides of Nicki — and it’s clear “Starships” shows her pop side. “I’ve never had this much fun recording music in my life. My first album, I was very guarded,” she said. “I felt like I was making music to please everyone else. I had to be politically correct, but this album I am just creating music, and there’s such a big difference. Literally, in the studio we were cracking up laughing, having fun and enjoying ourselves. The music itself, you’re going to get every side that I’ve ever shown and then a little bit extra. I’ve tried to make it very, very balanced, because I don’t ever want to be boxed in, and that’s always what drives me. So I made a very diverse album.” Related Artists Nicki Minaj

Whitney Houston’s Greatest Videos

‘How Will I Know,’ ‘The Greatest Love of All’ among Houston’s most iconic videos. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston in her “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” video Photo: Arista Records Long before Lady Gaga rolled around nearly naked in viscous goo, Rihanna showed off her S&M fetish, Christina squeezed into leather peek-a-boo chaps or Nicki Minaj dressed up like a male fantasy Barbie, Whitney Houston proved you could make a fuss without making a spectacle. The legendary R&B singer, who died Saturday at age 48 after reportedly consuming prescription drugs and alcohol on the eve of the 54th annual Grammy Awards , became one of the most important artists of the early music-video era by taking the road less traveled. While such fellow trailblazers as Michael Jackson and Madonna created video fantasy worlds full of monsters, gangsters, street-fighting men and naughty brides, Houston mostly skipped the drama and stood front and center in her most iconic clips doing the thing that she did best: singing her heart out. With her model-worthy looks and luminous smile, Houston knew exactly how to telegraph her charm through the TV — and later on the big screen in “The Bodyguard” and three other starring roles — which may explain why most of her most notable videos involve just a bit of perfunctory storyline and focus on her performance. Here are some of our favorite Houston video moments: “I Will Always Love You” : Is it even possible to come up with a concept for a clip that could match the grandeur and emotional heft of the breakout single from “The Bodyguard” soundtrack? It is, and smartly, that big idea was to focus on an elegantly suited up, forlorn-looking Houston sitting in an empty theater and staring into the distance as she watched clips from the movie scroll by. Houston blasted into the song’s towering finale via a quick zoom to her face, eyes closed, and then popping open as she hit the money note. How bad was Houston? She perfectly delivered the titanically tear-jerking drama of the song without ever once getting up from her chair. “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” : Whitney did ballads like nobody’s business, but she also knew how to throw down, as she did in the “Dance” video, the first single from her second album, Whitney . Dressed in a body-hugging purple dress, towering curly wig and colorful dangly earrings, Houston again focused on singing directly into the camera while a series of dancers showed off their moves in wide-shot cutaways. When it was Houston’s time to shine, though, the camera pulled in close to capture that sparkle in her eye and that 1,000-watt beam as she changed through a series of going-to-the-club outfits and mostly shimmied adorably in place. “How Will I Know” : The third single from Houston’s debut album was the one that changed everything. The clip helped introduce the singer to a wider audience when it became one of the first videos by a black female singer to earn heavy rotation on MTV. The concept was simple: Whitney in another of her trusty big hair bows and sexy minidresses sang right at the lens while dancers high-kicked and sashayed through a rainbow-paint-splashed maze of a set. All Houston had to do was walk, sing and smile and the rest was history. We’re still not sure, though, what was up with that dude in the half-suit, half-wedding dress. “Greatest Love of All” : The final single released from Houston’s debut album helped cement the M.O. for the classic Whitney video. Standing on yet another stage in an empty theater, Houston, wearing one of her beloved leather jackets, belts the big ballad with vigor as stage hands work around her, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the star of the show is crushing it right in front of them. While there appears to be some backstory involving Houston making her stage debut as a child, once Whit changes into that beaded white dress and matching chunky earrings to do her slinky saunter to center stage for the big finale … forget about it. “I’m Your Baby Tonight” : The title track from Houston’s third album, released in 1990, is what passed for a high-concept clip from the singer. Dressed in a white suit, with matching bowler and cane, Houston hip-swayed through a Cotton Club-type nightspot before transporting into a Manhattan penthouse. She walked through another mirror into a third scene where she was all three members of a Supremes-style girl group and finally ended up in a beatnik club, her haired pulled back as she rocked chopped bangs. As always, the focus was on images of Houston lip-synching the song’s lyrics with attitude as the camera lingered on her luminous skin and smile. Taylor Swift’s ‘Safe & Sound’ Came Together ‘Organically’

‘He created this ethereal sound without making it this big battle anthem,’ Swift says of ‘Hunger Games’ soundtrack producer T-Bone Burnett. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News On Monday night (February 13), Taylor Swift released a cold, moody video for her Civil Wars-assisted “Hunger Games” soundtrack tune “Safe & Sound.” During her exclusive chat with MTV News following the premiere, she revealed how the eerie song came together in just one day. “I wrote this song with the Civil Wars and [soundtrack producer] T-Bone Burnett, and we all happened to be in the same city on the same day, and I was working with T-Bone a lot on the soundtrack, just putting songs together,” she recalled to Sway during “MTV First: Taylor Swift.” When Burnett suggested the Civil Wars stop by, Swift was enthusiastic about the potential collaboration. “I had this title that I had been working with called ‘Safe & Sound,’ and I just knew that I wanted it to deal with the empathy, sort of the more sensitive side, the bittersweet side of this story,” she said about the sullen track. “Never imagining that this would ever be picked or a single, ’cause it’s a lullaby. This song was such an amazing experience, because it’s like it just happened.” The experience was particularly thrilling for Swift since she’s a big fan of the Grammy-winning Civil Wars. “I’ve been a Civil Wars fan for about a year, and I think they’re amazing, and I’ve always wanted to work with them. They have another song on the soundtrack [‘Kingdom Come’]. I have another song on the soundtrack [‘Eyes Wide Open’], and it just ended up so organically coming together, I can’t believe it, really.” By the time Swift heard the finished product, she couldn’t believe the beauty of Burnett’s sparse production. “We wrote this song and recorded it one day. When we got the track back, I was so surprised by the restraint,” she said. “He created this ethereal sound without making it this big battle anthem.” What did you think of Taylor’s “Safe & Sound” video?
