Rihanna and Coldplay perform ‘Princess of China’ for the first time on TV. By John Mitchell Rihanna performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Sprawled out on the floor under a red light and accompanied at first by just a piano, Rihanna hit the stage at the 54th Grammy Awards for a dance-heavy take on her massive #1 hit “We Found Love.” The performance kicked off like a scene straight out of the thematically dark video for the track , with the Barbadian pop star leaning against a wall looking troubled under dark lighting with only a piano playing alongside her as she sang the track like a torch ballad. Looking gorgeous — and giving off a Tina Turner vibe — Rihanna rocked the blond locks she introduced recently, wearing a tight, belly-baring ensemble. The laser lights, LED screens and synths kicked up soon enough, though, and Rihanna welcomed dancers to the stage and lit into a high-energy performance of the dance smash that kept with the feel of the song, devolving into a full-on rave, with the pop star front and center. Like many other performers and presenters at the show, Rihanna took a moment to honor the late Whitney Houston , demanding the audience, “Make some noise for Whitney!” Soon, the tempo backed down and the dancers departed, leaving Rihanna onstage with just Chris Martin strumming an acoustic guitar. The pair then started into the televised debut of their Mylo Xyloto collaboration “Princess of China.” “Her bit on our record is my favorite bit. When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it,” Chris Martin told MTV News of the pop princess’ involvement last fall. “And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we’ve been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music.” Coldplay finished things up on an upbeat not with their song “Paradise.” Stick with MTV News all for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off! Belgium-born singer talks about the song’s growing success and stripping down for its very naked music video. By James Montgomery Gotye in his “Somebody That I Used to Know” music video Photo: Eleven You might not know who Gotye is, but you’ve definitely heard his song. It’s a tidy little ball of emotional wreckage called “Somebody That I Used to Know,” and it’s currently burning up both the Billboard Hot 100 and Modern Rock radio (and it’s becoming a go-to track for the CW’s stable of teensploitation programming). The thing you might not know is that the roots of the Belgium-born (Australia-raised) singer/songwriter’s signature hit actually stretch back more than a year … when he was struggling to finish his Making Mirrors album. Though now, as Gotye begins his U.S. press push, he’s more than happy to tell you the backstory. ” ‘Somebody That I Used to Know,’ like a lot of the record, was a bit of a struggle to finish,” he told MTV News. “It was written fairly quickly — I wrote it in November 2010 — but it took six months to find Kimbra [who features on the track] and really realize she was the right vocalist to make the female part come to life. There were constant hurdles.” Then again, that’s been a fairly common occurrence. Because the making of each of his studio albums has been a battle, though Gotye is quick to chalk that up to the way he chooses to work. And “Somebody” is a prime example of what happens when he pushes through his struggles. “Sometimes I’ll have sections that I’m not quite sure how they fit in the puzzle of a tune, they’ll get moved around; what I think was originally a verse ends up becoming the chorus, or what’s an intro gets dropped as a hook, things get shifted around a lot,” he explained. “That song was written in a very linear fashion; and then I hit this brick wall of not knowing where to go with this one person’s story, and that prompted me to add another perspective.” And then, as his legions of female (and male) fans around the world are surely aware of, there’s the matter of the “Somebody” video, which features Gotye and Kimbra sans clothing … but loaded down with body paint. And yes, making the clip certainly presented a rather unique set of challenges. “The shots I did by myself, I chopped up a pair of my underpants and had them sort of gaffer-taped strategically around certain areas. But at one stage it just became a bit absurd, because the gaffer tape would just keep coming off, and my friend James, who was actually filming behind the scenes on the video, he’s got some pretty incriminating footage,” Gotye laughed. “There was just a point where the cinematographer of the clip was a bit more vicariously embarrassed for me than I was, because the underpants would just fall open and I’d be like ‘Let’s just keep going, there’s nothing nobody hasn’t seen here before.’ “We shot it over two very full days … I quite clearly remember driving home at 9 a.m., after shooting all day, in a bathrobe, with bodypaint all over my face, and going through McDonald’s drive-thru,” he continued. “I ordered a coffee to make sure I didn’t crash on the way home. And the girl working there, she didn’t even bat an eyelid. I guess it’s a regular thing down in Hastings [Australia] McDonald’s.” What do you think of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” video? Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco and Jeff Beck round out list of five former Grammy winners competing in hotly contested category. By James Montgomery Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Photo: Peter Wafzig/ Getty Images Five disparate discs will go head to head in the Best Rock Album category during Sunday’s 54th Grammy Awards (or, probably, during the pre-televised ceremony), which is a pretty apt way to sum up a year when the Decemberists topped the Billboard charts and the best-selling rock record — Mumford & Son’s Sigh No More — was actually released in 2010. In short, 2011 didn’t make a whole lot of sense. So we suppose it’s even more fitting that neither the Decemberists or Mumford & Sons are actually nominated for Best Rock Album at this year’s Grammys. Instead, it’s the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon, Wilco and Jeff Beck who will duke it out for the golden gramophone — and really, each of them have a pretty-realistic shot at winning. They’ve all got Grammy trophies at home (KOL even took home one of the so-called “Big Four” awards — Record of the Year, for “Use Somebody” — in 2009), and through the years, they’ve each proven themselves as mainstays when the Recording Academy reveals its list of nominees. All of which means that this year’s race is certain to be one of the most-tightly contested in years. Will hard-rock enthusiasts carry the Foos to victory? Can indie-leaning voters help Wilco take home the award? Will purists go all-in on Jeff Beck’s Les Paul tribute album? We won’t know for sure until the winner is announced Sunday. In the meantime, here’s a look at the five nominees for Best Rock Album: Foo Fighters, Wasting Light : Born from humble beginnings (they recorded the disc straight to tape in Dave Grohl’s garage ), Wasting Light went on to accomplish great things, not only giving the Foos their first-ever #1 debut in the U.S., but revitalizing the band’s spirit, which they admitted had been worn down after years on the touring/recording treadmill. In the process, the Foos served notice that they’re still formidable two decades on, the rare band as capable of churning out snarling stompers as they are radio-friendly numbers. A win here would give the Foos four Best Rock Album Grammys, twice as many as their nearest competitors (Green Day, U2 and, uh, Sheryl Crow). Jeff Beck, Rock ‘n’ Roll Party (Honoring Les Paul) : Part tribute, part rollicking rock workout, Beck honors his idol, the late, great Les Paul, with this effervescent disc. Recorded live at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club — where Paul played a weekly slot until his death in August 2009 — on what would’ve been the guitar pioneer’s 95th birthday, it features guest appearances from Brian Setzer, Trombone Shorty and Gary U.S. Bonds and nearly as many memorable moments. Given all that (not to mention the sentimental nature of Grammy voters), this could be the dark-horse favorite to take it all. Kings of Leon, Come Around Sundown : The follow-up to their breakout, Only By the Night , didn’t quite match the commercial successes of its predecessor, but that doesn’t mean it’s a dud. Instead, Sundown finds the brothers (and cousin) Followill coming to terms with their newfound fame, setting down roots and allowing their once bottled-up, garage-proofed rock to flower and flourish (think lap steel, Wurlitzers and horns). It’s a solid effort, though it remains to be seen if the Kings can match their post- Night Grammy haul, when they took home three awards (including the aforementioned Record of the Year) based on the strength of the album. Red Hot Chili Peppers, I’m With You : After a two-year hiatus (and a five-year gap between albums), the Chili Peppers returned in 2011 with I’m With You, a record of dizzying highs (not all of them drug-related) and disorienting lows. A spirited album that’s most certainly haunted by spirits of past regrets and departed friends, much like the Foo’s Wasting Light, the Peppers credit I’m With You — the first to feature guitarist Josh Klinghoffer — with revitalizing their band — which, given both the length and low periods of their amazing career, is definitely saying something. Wilco, The Whole Love : After sounding slightly bored (to some) on 2009’s Wilco (The Album), Jeff Tweedy and Co. returned last year with The Whole Love, an album that sees the band rediscovering their adventurous Yankee Hotel Foxtrot / A Ghost is Born period. At turns voluminous, foreboding, inscrutable and drop-dead gorgeous, it not only captures Wilco at their best, but also at a bit of a career crossroads. Regardless of wherever they go from here, we’ll definitely be listening. Part live clip, part kaleidoscopic freakout, the ‘Paris’ video more than matches the song’s massive impact. By James Montgomery Kanye West and Jay-Z in the music video for “N—as in Paris” Photo: Roc-A-Fella Records After the premiere of Kanye West and Jay-Z ‘s new “N—as in Paris” video — which bowed Thursday (February 9) on MTV.com — someone joked that I needed to watch it 13 times in a row to best approximate the experience of the dynamic duo’s Watch the Throne tour. And it’s true, Kanye and Jay did play “Paris” a whole lot during their trek … mostly because the song elicited such a thunderous response from sold-out crowds nationwide . So it’s somewhat fitting that the video (which was directed by West) is equally live … and just as thunderous. Filmed in part during the run of Throne shows at the Staples Center in Los Angeles — additional footage, one can assume, was shot during a casted performance, unless the Staples crowd was 85 percent female models — the clip captures both the loose jocularity of ‘Ye and Jay and the electric energy that coursed through the venue when “Paris” leapt from the speakers (many, many times). West fills the video with eye-catching kaleidoscopic effects, creating dizzying visuals that fold the audience, the stage and everything else in upon themselves, making fractals upon fractals. No wonder the clip is preceded by an epilepsy warning. Check out epic scenes from the “N—as in Paris” video! Given the size and scope of both the song and the artists performing it, the “Paris” video is also loaded with lasers, prowling panthers, pop-up-book cityscapes and the aforementioned models. Shoot, even producer Hit-Boy makes a one-second cameo. It’s a head-spinning, pulse-quickening mixture of imagery and movement, of sight and sound — an experience unlike any other live clip. Oh, and yes, Will Ferrell makes an appearance too, though it’s in the form of a scene from “Blades of Glory” (guess Ferrell wasn’t lying when he told MTV News that plans to feature him in the clip never quite materialized). So truly, there’s something for everyone. If you caught the Throne tour, the “Paris” video is sure to inspire heady flashbacks. If you didn’t, well, here’s what it was like, only pushed to the absolute max. And to further replicate the live feeling, I recommend watching it for roughly the next hour. It’s the way the thing was supposed to be viewed, after all. Did the “Paris” video capture the live Watch the Throne experience? Leave your comment below! No mom wants her 5-year-old daughter being called a “prosti-tot” or other such things. Even if she’s partially or wholly responsible for that happening. According to Susanna Barrett and her lawyer, the bad reputation that her daughter, Isabella Barrett, has gotten since a video of her singing along to LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love” is why she’s suing for $30 million. Barrett’s problem isn’t that TMZ posted the video. She gave them the footage, in fact. It’s that she was under the impression TMZ was going to write a “fluff story,” but ended up making a “brazen attempt to sexualize” her child. Allegedly. First off, Barrett says, her daughter was not performing in a nightclub, as reported, but rather in an impromptu sing-along at a pet-charity dinner. “It was kind of a spontaneous thing,” the elder Barrett recalls. “You can see other people had their camera and cell phones out. You know Isabella is on a reality show so it’s not uncommon for people to be taking pictures of her.” “There was a red carpet there, so we were taking pictures, as well.” As for the songs, Barrett maintains that Isabella was only in the spotlight for about 30 seconds of LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” before Rihanna kicked in. “She didn’t know all the words, and the sensationalism of it was actually more exciting then actually what you’re watching – that’s where the problem lies.”
