‘Hunger Games’ Stars ‘Blown Away’ By The Capitol

But Jennifer Lawrence is less excited about her singing: ‘I am a horrible singer. And I’m an even worse person to be around when I’m singing.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News For our fellow “Hunger Games” fans who obsess over Suzanne Collins’ brilliant books and their upcoming film adaptations as much as we do, there are so many things to love about the story that it’s difficult to pick just one or two (or five) things we’re looking forward to seeing when the movie opens March 23. But two of the most intriguing elements involved in the book-to-movie translation are what the Capitol will look like and how star Jennifer Lawrence will sound singing Rue’s Lullaby. MTV News was lucky enough to get a few hints about those specific topics during our recent chat with Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, both of whom can’t wait to see the Capitol in the finished film but disagree about their excitement for Lawrence’s singing skills. “[I’m excited to see] everything in the Capitol,” Lawrence said. “Every time we showed up at a Capitol scene, I was so blown away. Everything was more than you could have even imagined.” “What was cool about the stuff in the Capitol, so much was practical,” Hutcherson added. “The whole apartment scene was all a set they built that was super, incredibly futuristic and amazing, and to see how that is integrated with the whole green-screen world as well is going to be really, really cool.” Lawrence was not quite as enthusiastic about hearing her voice in the film, however. When we brought up the subject, she seemed to immediately get nervous about it. “Oh God, oh God. Yeah, I did [sing],” she said when asked about recording “Rue’s Lullaby.” “I’m a terrible singer.” “She’s not,” Hutcherson said. “No, Josh! Stop,” Lawrence said to Hutcherson with sincerity. “He is messing with everyone.” “She’s been called the songbird of her generation,” Hutcherson jumped in with a smile, referencing a Will Ferrell line in “Step Brothers.” “My voice is a combination of Fergie and Jesus,” Lawrence played along. “No, I am a horrible singer. And I’m an even worse person to be around when I’m singing. I’m a terrible singer. I hated it.” Lawrence said the recording process with famed producer T-Bone Burnett was particularly excruciating. “T-Bone Burnett, like, the best person to ever happen to music is, like, listening in the other room. I kept getting ready, and then the music would play, and I’d [freak out],” she recalled. “Nothing would come out of my mouth.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Jay-Z Brings Brooklyn ‘Glory’ To Carnegie Hall

Jay performs his song to daughter Blue Ivy Carter and a host of other hits at the famed venue, with help from Alicia Keys and Nas. By Rob Markman Jay-Z performs at Carnegie Hall Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage NEW YORK — From Marcy to Madison Square and now from Crooklyn to Carnegie. Jay-Z has come a long way since releasing his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, and the magnitude of his travels wasn’t lost on the God MC when he performed at Carnegie Hall on Monday evening (February 6). The swanky crowd filled the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall for the first of two benefit concerts, which joined Jay’s Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation with the United Way of NYC to raise money for gifted high school students who aren’t financially positioned to attend college. The premium-priced charity tickets brought out the likes of Liza Minnelli and New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia. With a full orchestra that included ?uestlove and Young Guru playing DJ, Hov took the stage at 8:45 p.m. ET after a dramatic string build. Emerging from the stage’s side door in a white tux jacket toting a gold bottle of Ace of Spades champagne, Jigga began his evening shouting, “Allow me to reintroduce myself, my name is Hov,” the iconic opening line from 2003’s “Public Service Announcement.” Those who thought Jigga would conform to the stuffy artistic standard typically associated with the famed concert hall were mistaken. Jay strutted across the stage drinking from his gold bottle promising the crowd, “It’s just tea.” On this night, Hov pledged to eradicate the divide that separates musical genres, only differentiating between good and bad music. “All those lines that divide us, we gonna step on ’em,” he announced to the electric crowd. As he’s done most of his career, Jay continued to stomp out the misconceptions that rap can’t be considered highbrow art as he tore through radio hits and street favorites like “U Don’t Know” and “Where I’m From.” Jay did balance things out when he invited Alicia Keys onstage for “Empire State of Mind” but got extra-gritty on the very next song, making way for Nas to perform his own “N.Y. State of Mind” from the Queensbridge MC’s 1994 classic Illmatic. There was a perfect juxtaposition throughout. The biggest musical clash came when Jay performed the “Annie”-sampling “Hard Knock Life.” Jigga rapped the song’s verses, while the wealthy crowd song the downtrodden chorus. By the time Hova rolled into the set’s next song “Izzo,” a marijuana smell filled the air. That must be a first for Carnegie. Ever the master of ceremonies, the Brooklyn rap juggernaut slowed things down properly easing into “Girls, Girls, Girls,” then “Song Cry” and then “Glory,” the song he released days after the birth of his and Beyonc

Lil Wayne Paints A Masterpiece In ‘Mirror’ Video

Antoine Fuqua directs Wayne and Bruno Mars in new Carter IV clip. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne in his video for “Mirror” Lil Wayne isn’t done with Tha Carter IV just yet. The last time we saw a visual from Weezy’s double-platinum opus was August, but on Tuesday (January 31), Mr. Carter followed up his “How to Love” video and dropped a clip for “Mirror,” his collaboration with Bruno Mars . In the vide, which was directed by filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, Weezy begins alone in a studio, shirtless with his long locks flowing. The camera zooms in, focusing in on the Martian’s key ink, like the “Fear God” tattoo on his eyelids and the “Baby” tat on his right arm, which pays homage to Cash Money’s CEO and Wayne’s father figure, Birdman. The somber track, produced by REO of the Soundkillers opens with operatic wails and a shimmering hi-hat before Wayne starts rapping: “With everything happening today, you don’t really know if you’re coming or goin’/ But you think that you’re on your way, life lined up on the mirror don’t blow it.” It all builds rather slowly. As Wayne’s first verse begins to take form, so does the visual. We look on as the Young Money superstar starts spray-painting, dabbling with red ink on an unseen canvas. Mars sits atop a prop ladder, bellowing his warm and introspective vocals: “Mirror on the wall, here we are again/ Through my rise and fall, you are my only friend.” As the story pushes on, Weezy begins to add color, mixing his red base with black-and-white splashes. Still, there is no reveal, just slight glimpses of Wayne’s art. The rapper is onto something, however, because every now and again, he stops to marvel at his own creation. When the song draws to a close, Tunechi stands with his arms spread in triumph — the painting is finally done. With the song’s closing chords, the masterpiece is finally unveiled, and in a true moment of self-examination, Wayne stares at the canvas. Who is the painting of? Wayne, of course, in all his glory — shirtless, locks flowing, with a mic in his hand. All hail Weezy! What do you think of Lil Wayne and Bruno Mars’ “Mirror” video? Tell us in the comments! Poor Newt Gingrich. Already under siege from Super PACs, media members and politicians in the tank for Mitt Romney , guy is about to lose his own theme song! The candidate is being sued by a company which owns the rights to Survivor’s 1982 hit “Eye of the Tiger,” for using the inspirational Rocky III tune at campaign events. Rude Music Inc., owned by a member of Survivor, filed the suit against Newt for jacking the song to push a political agenda … that the band clearly isn’t a fan of. Newt, who has surged into contention for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, has been using the song at various political events from 2009-present. And probably not for much longer. Too $hort, Lil’ Kim Tried To Make ‘Musical Sex’ On ‘Call Me’

‘We tried to, like, have sex on the song,’ Too $hort tells ‘RapFix Live’ of he and Lil Kim’s 1997 collabo. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Too $hort Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Too $hort has built quite the reputation with the ladies in his 30-plus years in rap. Songs like “Freaky Tales” and “I’m a Player” expertly showcase Short Dog’s ability to swoon women with his raps, so when his record label requested that he work with Lil’ Kim on the 1997 single “Call Me,” Kim’s then on-and-off boyfriend the Notorious B.I.G. was more than a little concerned. “I paid for the tickets for Kim and her manager to come to Atlanta and I went to pick them up to take them to the studio and who gets off the plane? No Lil’ Kim, it was Biggie,” Too $hort recalled with a laugh when he appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live.” Though $hort and B.I.G. had built a good rapport before the Brooklyn great was slain in 1997, prior to recording with Kim, they didn’t really know each other. Too $hort remembers B.I.G. coming off the plane on a pair of crutches that he was forced to use after he was involved in a car accident. The two sat down to talk, and according to $hort, the Notorious one inquired about the Oakland rapper’s intentions with his artist and sometime love interest. “So what’s goin’ on with you and Kim? What’s happenin’?” Too $hort remembered Biggie asking. After $hort explained to Big that he only was interested in recording with Kim for his single, the “Juicy” rapper approved the collaboration. “He wanted to know what was goin’ on with his little thang before he let it happen,” $hort said. “So I explained it to him… and sure enough she showed up on the next flight. We got in the lab and we worked it out.” Kim, who titled her 1996 debut album Hardcore, had become known for her sexually explicit lyrics, just like Too $hort, but the first version of “Call Me” didn’t quite meet expectations, $hort revealed. “Believe it or not, we did the song and everybody said, ‘Man, it’s not dirty enough’,” $hort laughed. Eventually they re-recorded the dirty version that fans have come to know. “We tried to, like, have sex on the song,” he said. “It wasn’t physical sex, but we tried to make musical sex. I think we achieved it.” Did you catch Too $hort on Wednesday’s ‘RapFix Live’? Share your thoughts on the interview in the comments! Evanescence’s ‘My Heart Is Broken’ Video: The Haunting

Brand-new clip finds the band trapped within a nightmare of its own invention. By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee on the set of their “My Heart Is Broken” video Photo: Matt Elias/MTV News After nearly a month spent touting its various ethereal qualities , on Tuesday (January 24), Evanescence premiered their video for “My Heart Is Broken,” a dark, dreamlike thing that pushes Amy Lee’s claustrophobic musings to the next level. And somewhere beyond that too. As Lee told MTV News back in December, the look and feel of the “Broken” clip was very much influenced by the British fantasy/horror flick “Paperhouse,” about a young girl who creates vivid dream worlds to escape the harsh reality of everyday life, only to eventually realize she’s stuck in those dreams — inspiration that certainly resonates with the song’s lyrics, which are very much about being trapped in a dark, desolate place and trying to free one’s self despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Working with director Dean Karr, and aided very much by fiber-optic technology, Evanescence have created a video that is both haunting and haunted. It opens with Lee suspended in an inky void, a single light projecting from her finger. While her bandmates bash away in the blackness, she slowly begins to fill her emptiness by creating a dream world — a fallow field, a sea of stars, a crumbling room — until she eventually realizes that, in spite of her attempts, she is just as trapped as she was before. At clip’s end, the viewer is left to wonder whether she has the power to escape (though a cracked mirror seems to indicate she can), which, in a way, only further connects the video to the song itself: Like Lee sings, each of us have within ourselves the ability to free ourselves from any situation; whether we do or not is largely our decision. The first step seems to be realizing that the walls we surround ourselves with are largely of our own creation. The rest is up to us. What do you think of the “My Heart Is Broken” video? ‘Muppets’ Music Man Calls Oscar Nod ‘A Big Surprise’

Bret McKenzie’s ‘Man or Muppet’ is up against ‘Real in Rio’ for Best Original Song. By Kara Warner Miss Piggy in “The Muppets” Photo: Muppets Studio There are always plenty of shocks, snubs and surprises when it comes to the unveiling of Oscar nominees each year. Tuesday’s (January 24) announcement was met with all of the above, but overall there were more pleasant surprises than not. One of our favorite nominees is “Flight of the Conchords” actor-turned- “Muppets” music supervisor Bret McKenzie, who scored a Best Original Song nod for his “Man or Muppet.” MTV News was lucky enough to get a few minutes on the phone with the still-in-shock McKenzie, who called in from his home in New Zealand. “We’re celebrating with breakfast,” McKenzie said. “I woke up to the phone ringing nonstop, so then I picked up my phone and saw the news. I was very excited. I don’t sound it, but I am very excited. It’s a great day.” The multitalented New Zealander revealed that while “Man or Muppet” is his favorite song in “The Muppets” and that he is very proud of the earnest ballad, he never expected it to be recognized for anything. “I really wanted it to be hilarious and beautiful, and I feel like we got that combination. It’s sincere but ridiculous,” he said. “The idea of children singing the song at school cracks me up.” McKenzie said that the nomination surprised almost the entire “Muppets” team, except perhaps writer/star Jason Segel, who made an outlandish prediction during production about the earnest tune’s award potential. “The night we recorded ‘Man or Muppet,’ we had a few drinks and Jason Segel was predicting we’d get together at the Oscars, but he was joking,” McKenzie recalled. “[Maybe] that guy can see the future.” Once the actor/musician gets over the shock of his nomination, he’ll have to start preparations for how the song will be performed during the 84th annual awards ceremony. “I was thinking we’ll definitely need a man and a Muppet,” McKenzie joked. “Yeah, that’s what we need.” When asked about his chances, McKenzie marveled at the fact that there are only two nominees, “Man or Muppet” and “Real in Rio” from “Rio.” “I was amazed there were only two nominees; I was surprised. It seems unusual, but it’s great because the odds are 50-50,” he said. “The only thing I guess would be better if there was only one nomination.” What song should win the Oscar for Best Original Song?
