‘X Factor’: Astro Raps Through His Drama

Two contestants will go home on Wednesday’s results episode. By Adam Graham Astro on “X Factor” Photo: FOX Teen rapper Astro addressed his blow-up last week and promised to not let his fans down again during Tuesday’s (November 22) performance episode of “The X Factor,” which found the competition’s top nine contestants dedicating their performances to special people in their lives. Astro, the 15-year-old Brooklyn rapper who had a near meltdown and almost refused to perform after landing in the bottom two on last week’s results episode, explained in a pre-packaged introduction he “didn’t know how to control my emotions” last week and he “could have handled it better.” He then went on to address the situation further in an original song he performed set to Jay-Z’s “Show Me What You Got,” in which he rapped, “Got my head in the right place and I’m back to win.” Before the judges weighed in on his song, he explained to his fans, “To Team Astro and all the Astronauts across the world, but mostly hip-hop, I’ll never let you down again.” Simon Cowell, who harshly criticized Astro for his attitude last week, took to the young MC’s apology. “The music business needs unpredictability,” Cowell said, explaining he admired Astro for speaking his mind. His mentor L.A. Reid went with the cooler-heads approach as well. “As long as you keep a good head on your shoulders and always do your very best, you’ll be fine,” he told him. Here’s how the rest of the evening’s performances shook out. The Girls Rachel Crow opened the show and dedicated Yolanda Adams’ “I Believe” to her adoptive parents. The performance sparkled, and never one to exaggerate, Abdul said Crow was proof angels exist on earth. Melanie Amaro enjoyed her biggest moment yet on the show, and following her performance of R. Kelly’s “The World’s Greatest” she excitedly celebrated onstage, shouting out her upbringing in the Virgin Islands. Cowell said she is needed in the competition, and Nicole Scherzinger stopped the show to give her a hug, nearly giving ultra time-conscious host Steve Jones a heart attack. And L.A. Reid showed another lapse in his musical knowledge when he criticized Drew for not singing “age appropriate” material, after the 15-year-old sang 19-year-old Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper.” That put Cowell on the offensive, and he spat back at his rival, “I’m sick to death of your pointless, stupid criticism,” going on to call it “unfounded,” “inaccurate” and “complete and utter rubbish.” In this case, we sort of have to agree with Cowell. The Boys Marcus Canty dedicated Boyz II Men’s “A Song for Mama” to his own mama, who was sitting at the foot of the stage, and earned unanimous praise from the judges. “I’ve worked with some great singers, you are as great as any great singer I’ve ever worked with,” Reid told him, while Cowell said Canty put himself back in the competition with the performance. Chris Rene, meanwhile, sang a mix of the Beatles’ “Let It Be” and his own “Young Homie,” which he sang in the early audition rounds. “You reminded everyone why we liked you,” Cowell said, echoing the sentiments of all the judges. The Over 30s Josh Krajcik closed the show singing the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” alone at his piano, surrounded by a series of spotlights that made him look like a prisoner in some sort of light jail. Abdul called the burrito maker “larger than life” and Cowell said he was “outstanding,” while Scherzinger told him, “Beyond this competition, I strongly believe your music can change the world.” LeRoy Bell took on Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel,” the soundtrack to way too many of those wrenching animal cruelty awareness ads, and dedicated the song to his late mother. The judges thought it was his best performance, save for Reid, who called it “heartfelt for sure, but not your very best.” The Group Lakoda Rayne, the sole remaining group in the competition, chose to sing Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” — an odd choice for a dedication, though they were celebrated by the judges. But Cowell seemed to already be acknowledging their fate when he said, “I genuinely wish two people weren’t going home tomorrow.” Yes, two acts are slated to get the ax during Wednesday’s results episode — so much for the warmth of the season! — which is also set to feature performances by Kelly Clarkson and Bruno Mars. What did you think of Tuesday’s “X Factor”? Did you believe Astro’s explanation for his behavior? Let us know in the comments!

‘X Factor’ Judges Leave Stacy Francis ‘Very Confused’

‘For [Simon Cowell] to just beat me up like that, I don’t understand,’ singer tells MTV News after Wednesday night’s episode. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Stacy Francis performs on “The X Factor” Photo: FOX It seems that every reality-show singing competition has to have one polarizing contestant who makes headlines every week for something. “X Factor” appears to have found its lightning rod in former professional singer Stacy Francis, who ripped it up with judge Simon Cowell on Wednesday night’s rock-themed performance episode. The 42-year-old Brooklyn native and single mother, who is being coached by Nicole Scherzinger, was lambasted by Cowell for her sleepy rendition of Meat Loaf’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” which he said was “the sort of thing I would expect someone to sing at the Hilton Hotel with people turning their backs, eating peanuts.” MTV News spoke to Francis backstage after the show, and she admitted that Cowell’s slings and arrows bewildered her. “I just want a fair judgment, and I don’t feel like it was fair,” she said. “I feel like because I’m not in Simon’s category, he beats me up every week. I don’t know if I can really take on what he says as an artist and really say, ‘OK, how can I make this better?’ ” On a show where the judges usually save their harshest fire for each other, Cowell went all in on Francis, saying, “I thought the song was a horrible choice. I like rocks; that was a pebble.” Indeed, Francis, standing at a feather-covered mic stand while wearing leather gloves and a sparkly silver dress, emoted her way through the lesser-known Loaf tune while accompanied by a grand piano, mirror-ball effects on the giant onstage videos, lots of ground fog and a wind machine. She took issue with Cowell’s criticism that the song was too cabaret, noting that the audience seemed to love it. “For him to just beat me up like that, I don’t understand; I don’t get it,” she said. “I sang a Meat Loaf song, which is a rock song, and he said he didn’t love it. Melanie Amaro sang an R.E.M. song, and he loved it. It was the same tempo … I don’t know, I was very confused about it.” Francis said it seems to her that the other females in the competition have an advantage because they are in Cowell’s category and he doesn’t give them as much grief. “My first audition, he told me he loved me and he loved my voice and he loved everything,” she said. “All of a sudden, I’m the worst thing in the competition. I don’t understand it. That’s very confusing, and I think it’s very unfair.” As for judge Paula Abdul’s comments about some of Francis’ vocals being flat, the onetime member of the group Ex-Girlfriend said, if anything, her vocals sometimes go sharp because she pushes too hard, but rarely flat. “I don’t think that I ever go flat, so that’s weird,” she said. “To me, [Abdul] has one group in the competition that’s left so she would love to see any other contestant [leave] except her only one. I don’t know if I’m getting a fair evaluation as an artist or if it’s just the bickering amongst the judges because they wanna win.” Share your review of Stacy Francis’ performance in the comments below! Google Music Launches, Plans To Take On iTunes

Users can store up to 20,000 songs on the Google cloud. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Google/ MTV News After a summer of beta testing and months of rumors, Google officially launched its long-rumored Google Music service on Wednesday in an attempt to compete with the undisputed champion of digital downloading, Apple’s iTunes. The initial reaction from Silicon Valley tech writers was that the service was, well, pretty similar to iTunes, but, you know, not as great. Google’s bid to break Apple’s decade-long supremacy in the digital music realm allows users to store up to 20,000 songs in their personal locker on the Google cloud service. That is similar to what Apple’s Match cloud server offers its users, except, according to one Google exec, his company won’t be charging an annual fee to allow users to listen to their own music on the cloud. (Apple’s Match charges a $25 annual fee for storage.) So far, Google has signed up three of the four major record labels — Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI — but has not yet reached a deal with the Warner Music Group, which has a 20-percent share of the U.S. market. Among the Warner acts you won’t find on Google Music are Wiz Khalifa, Nickelback, Frank Sinatra, Green Day, Gucci Mane and Mastodon. Google has signed up a number of independent labels as well and there was the vague promise of a potential Warner deal in the future. For now, though, the search giant is differentiating itself from the competition by allowing artists who self-release their music to directly upload their songs for purchase on Google Music and set their own pricing schemes. Google Music also lets users share the music they’ve bought with friends via the Google+ social networking platform. Once you’ve purchased a song or album from the Android Market, you can then send a stream to a pal using Google+ and they can listen to the tune once for free. The service, with prices similar to those on iTunes, will also be offering a free song of the day and is currently touting exclusive tracks from a number of artists, including Coldplay, the Rolling Stones and Busta Rhymes. Will you check out the Google Music service?

‘X Factor’: Josh Krajcik Rocks Out On A Rocky Night

Astro and Rachel Crow also earn high marks, but Stacy Francis and Lakoda Rayne draw Simon Cowell’s ire. By Adam Graham Josh Krajcik performs on “The X Factor” Photo: FOX “The X Factor” took on rock music Wednesday, with decidedly rocky results. The debate of what really constitutes rock overshadowed the proceedings, with the increasingly catty judges sniping at one another over their song choices and whether they fit the evening’s theme. In the end, only one performer, Josh Krajcik, turned in what could truly be considered a rockin’ performance, plugging in and kicking out the jams with the Foo Fighters’ “Pretender.” Krajcik was the evening’s big winner — inspiring mentor Nicole Scherzinger to head-bang her way through his performance — along with teen rapper Astro, who is quickly becoming a favorite in the competition. Astro’s original song, a dedication to hip-hop rapped to Puff Daddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You,” caused L.A. Reid to gush that he not only has what it takes to win the competition, but also to become a “major international star,” while Simon Cowell told him he has more maturity and intelligence than the older contestants he’s up against. Astro’s consistency, meanwhile, irked Paula Abdul. “Can you just suck for once?” she pleaded. “I don’t think you can!” Here’s how the remainder of the contestants fared: The Boys Chris Rene, sporting one of Jay-Z’s controversial Occupy All Streets T-shirts , did Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry,” which Cowell argued wasn’t nearly rockin’ enough. “Loved the performance. Would have been great if the theme was reggae,” Cowell quipped. Marcus Canty’s take on Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” earned high marks from everyone but Cowell, who said it felt like he was pretending to be someone he’s not. L.A. Reid shot back with a simple, “You rocked!” The Girls Coming off a strong performance last week, Rachel Crow took on the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” which more than satisfied the judges. “The question is, can you sell records? Can you sell tickets? And the answer is yes,” Reid beamed. Melanie Amaro’s piano-and-vocals version of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” was dismissed as “so not rock” by Reid, and Scherzinger questioned why she wasn’t moved to tears by the song (she explained that, normally, she is a weeping mess by the song’s close). Cowell, however, boasted that the performance reminded him of Adele and Alicia Keys — performers who are not the least bit rock, mind you, but who happen to sell a lot of records. Fourteen-year-old Drew, meanwhile, took on U2’s “With or Without You” — which was similar to her version of Coldplay’s “Fix You” last week — and Reid, Scherzinger and Abdul all stressed they’d like to hear her do something outside her comfort zone. But Cowell dismissed their comments and praised her, saying he’s confident she’ll be in the competition “until the end.” The Over 30’s LeRoy Bell’s straightforward reading of Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight” was smacked down by the judges. “You’re good, man, but I need more. This is the big time,” Reid scolded him. Stacy Francis dedicated her performance of Meat Loaf’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” to her “Franatics,” but Cowell trashed her performance with his most stinging critique of the season to date. “It was the sort of thing I would expect someone to sing at the Hilton hotel with people turning their backs eating peanuts,” he said. (It’s safe to say he is not a Franatic.) The Group Lakoda Rayne, Paula Abdul’s sole remaining group , got hammered for what Cowell called their “stupid” and “gimmicky” choreography, and he called the group’s performance of the Outfield’s “Your Love” mashed up with Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” “a complete mess.” When Reid called Cowell’s critique harsh, Cowell barked, “Watch your back” at Reid. Me-ow, you two! One finalist is due to be sent home on Thursday’s (November 17) show, which is also set to feature a live performance by Rihanna. What did you think of rock night on “The X Factor”? Jay-Z And Kanye West’s ‘Paris’ Came ‘Out Of Nowhere’

Producer Hit-Boy is especially excited about the Throne performing the single multiple times during shows. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Getty Images Jay-Z and Kanye West might give it up for Paris on their Watch the Throne single, but the international party anthem is now #1 in the U.S. Last week, “N—as in Paris” snagged the top spot on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Producer Hit-Boy couldn’t be more ecstatic, especially considering that he initially submitted Jay and ‘Ye other records that at the time seemed to be bigger than “Paris.” “The crazy thing about the ‘Paris’ record is that record just came out of nowhere, pretty much,” Hit-Boy told MTV News last week. “I did other records that were talked about being singles and all types of stuff, so I was hyped over those records.” Instead, the superstar duo chose to run with “N—as in Paris,” a brash celebration of success over a bouncy beat, mashed up with Will Ferrell sound bites . Though it was Hit-Boy who came up with the initial version of the track, he credits ‘Ye with the addition of the former “SNL” funnyman. “Genius. That’s just the genius that ‘Ye is. He always comes up with these ideas that just takes music to a whole ‘nother level,” Hit-Boy gushed. “Just something that’s never been done before.” Ferrell was also pretty excited about being included on the song. “I was completely flattered when they asked if they could sample me into the song,” Ferrell told MTV News about the track’s “Blades of Glory” quotes. “And when I heard it for the first time, I just started to laugh because it felt so surreal. But I really did like the song.” Not only is “Paris” killing the radio, but while on tour, Hov and Yeezy perform the fan favorite multiple times in a single night. During the tour’s opening night on October 28 in Atlanta, the duo rocked the single twice; the next night they performed it three times. When Hit-Boy caught one of the two Madison Square Garden shows in New York at the beginning of November, he was blown away hearing his track repeatedly.”It was amazing,” he said. “I’ve never heard of that being done before, like a song being performed multiple times. That made me feel super special.” What do you think of “Paris”? Let us know in the comments! ‘Dancing With The Stars’: Nancy Grace Signs Off

Rob Kardashian joins HLN host in the bottom two. By Kelley L. Carter Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus Photo: ABC On Tuesday’s “Dancing With the Stars,” it came down to the commentator and the Kardashian. Low scorer Nancy Grace was the one booted, just one week shy of making it into the semifinals. But the HLN host seemed to take it all in stride. “I am so proud, but I really cannot take the credit,” she said, standing next to partner Tristan MacManus. “It’s been all Tristan from the get-go, and the whole crew at ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ ” MacManus, a newbie on the show this season, thanked fans of the show for embracing him as the new professional. “We’ve had a blast,” he said. “We’d like to thank everyone. Thanks for being very welcoming to me. We’ve really, really had a fun time and all the support that we get from you all, that really pushes us to do it. From the start, we said to each other, ‘It’s not about being the best, it’s about doing the best,’ and I think that’s what we did.” Grace said she was proud to make it as far as she had in the competition. On Monday night’s show, she tangoed and, for her instant dance, did the jive; the judges weren’t all that impressed. They told her she got lost in the choreography but that they loved the chemistry between her and MacManus. They ended up with a total of 44 out of 60. Despite the low score, Grace was pleased with her “DWTS” experience. “Not only did I meet a lot of goals, I also became friends with not only the other stars, but with the dancers as well,” she said. “I also want to thank the viewers who’ve stuck by me since way back when.” Were you sad to see Nancy go? Heavy D: The Essential Playlist

MTV News compiles the most memorable hits of his extensive catalog. By Rob Markman Heavy D Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images There will never be another Heavy D . When the Mount Vernon, New York, MC debuted in 1987 as part of the group Heavy D & the Boyz , he made an immediate impact with his infectious dance hits. For the most part, Heav directed his material toward the ladies and even dubbed himself the Overweight Lover. With his music, Waterbed Heav oozed sex appeal, paving the way for other big-boned MCs like the Notorious B.I.G., Fat Joe and Rick Ross to garner a female fanbase. Heavy was also a noted dancer and paired each of his hits with well-choreographed steps. It’s difficult to imagine where the likes of Soulja Boy and Cali Swag District would be without Heavy D’s contributions. On November 8, Heavy D left us , but his music will live on forever. For the unfamiliar, MTV News has put together an essential playlist, while at the same time giving the MC’s longtime fans something to remember him by. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been rocking with Heavy D since his 1987 debut or with his more recent foray into reggae and dancehall: Let’s all collectively gather around the iPod and wish Dwight “Heavy D” Myers a Peace Journey ! “The Overweight Lover’s in the House” The big man sure knew how to make an entrance. Along with his group the Boyz, Heavy D made his presence known with “The Overweight Lover’s in the House” from the group’s debut album, Living Large. “See the weight that I am, is a big lover man/ Check out the rhyme, in due time you’ll be a Heav D fan,” he rapped — and boy was he right. “Mr. Big Stuff” Back when many still considered hip-hop to be mere noise, Heavy D made older skeptics take notice when he sampled Jean Knight’s 1971 hit Stax single “Mr. Big Stuff.” Keeping much of the song’s original melody, Heav rhymed over a bombastic drum track and put his big-man pride on full display. “Somebody for Me” In 1989, Heavy D & the Boyz scored their first platinum plaque with their sophomore album, Big Tyme. The album had a number of hits, like “We Got Our Own Thang” and “Gyrlz, They Love Me,” but none bigger than the New Jack Swing-inspired “Somebody for Me.” In the track’s video, Heav also cleaned up his act and ditched the track jacket and sneakers for a well-tailored suit and hard-bottom shoes. Good choice! “Now That We Found Love” Heavy had a gang of hits, but 1991’s “Now That We Found Love” is among his biggest. With ’90s R&B singer Aaron Hall on the hook and Teddy Riley on the beat, Heavy D & the Boyz kept clubs pumping with their popular dance hit. Through his music, Heav also kept things positive. Judging from this infectious groove, it was nearly impossible to tell that the rapper was mourning the death of group member Trouble T Roy, who had tragically passed a year before the song’s release. “Don’t Curse” (featuring Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Kool G Rap, Q-Tip and CL Smooth) Because most of his catalog revolved around lovey-dovey dance hits, some hardcore rap purists refused to give Heavy his props, but when Mr. Big Stuff gathered noted MCs Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Kool G Rap, Q-Tip and CL Smooth for 1991’s “Don’t Curse,” even the haters had to give it up. Soul for Real’s “Candy Rain” remix This R&B quartet didn’t have many hits, but their 1995 single “Candy Rain” was all the band needed to cement their place in popular music. And who did they call for the song’s remix? Heavy Diddly, Diddly, Diddly D, of course. “Nuttin’ But Love” Heavy D & the Boyz snatched up a third platinum plaque with their 1994 album, Nuttin’ But Love. The LP’s title track, produced by DJ Kid Capri, was a crowd favorite. On the song, Heav professed his affection for his doubting lover. Want a real 1990s flashback? Check the video for a cameo from Rebecca Gayheart, a.k.a. “the Noxzema girl.” Michael Jackson’s “Jam” It’s one thing to do records with rappers like Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap, but when the King of Pop comes calling, that’s a whole different level. When Michael Jackson needed a spitter to compliment his Teddy Riley-produced smash “Jam,” he tapped Heavy D. “Making funky jams with my man, Michael Jackson,” the Overweight Lover rapped over the bouncy track. His man Michael Jackson — just let that soak in for a second. Janet Jackson’s “Alright” remix There was no one more innovative than the King of Pop, but MJ wasn’t the first Jackson to feature Heav. Before 1992’s “Jam,” sister Janet snagged the rapper for her 1991 remix of “Alright” from her Rhythm Nation album. Not only did he get to lay vocals alongside Janet, in the song’s video, he co-starred with the legendary Cab Calloway. Grand Puba’s “Let’s Get It On” (featuring Heavy D, 2Pac and the Notorious B.I.G.) This 1994 underground track usually goes unnoticed, but it’s an important footnote in rap history. Before their famous feud and untimely deaths, the Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac collaborated with Grand Puba and Heavy D on this Eddie F-produced track. It is the only known in-studio collaboration between the legendary rappers, and Heavy D was there for it all, trading bars with Big and ‘Pac. “No Matter What” There is no doubt, Heavy D was a hip-hop soul through and through, but the Jamaican star returned to his roots when he reinvented himself as a reggae artist on the 2008 album Vibes. The music may have changed, but Heav still crooned about love and overall good vibes. Share your memories of Heavy D on Facebook. Lindsay Lohan Sentenced To 30 Days In Jail

Judge allows Lohan to complete Playboy shoot before going to jail. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan arrives at the Airport Courthouse in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: Toby Canham/Getty Images Lindsay Lohan is once again headed back to the sadly familiar confines of the Los Angeles County jail. The troubled actress appeared in court Wednesday morning (November 2) and was sentenced to 30 days in jail for violating her probation for not attending court-mandated therapy sessions and getting tossed from a community-service gig. According to TMZ , Lohan admitted in court Wednesday that she violated the terms of her probation from a theft case by getting booted from her community-service assignment at the Downtown Women’s Center. Judge Stephanie Sautner was adamant that she would not put up with any more slipups from Lohan, telling her, “This is known as putting the keys to jail in the defendant’s pocket … the first time you violate, you will go to jail.” Lohan will have to serve 12 days at the Los Angeles County morgue — where she’s already been logging some time — and then attend four therapy sessions by December 14. Sautner warned that if Lohan does not meet all those conditions, she will put a warrant out for her arrest and sentence her to an additional 270 days in jail. Sautner revoked Lohan’s probation in October following the revelation that the actress had not completed her obligations from a 2011 arrest on theft charges . What do you think of Lindsay’s return to the big house? Tell us on Facebook! This time around, Lohan will not have the option of serving her time at home , and given the overcrowding situation in L.A. jails, she is only expected to serve 20 percent of the 30 days, or around six days. She has to complete another 12 days at the morgue and four psychotherapy sessions by January 17 and complete her community service (53 days total) and therapy obligations by March 29. If she successfully meets those obligations, her probation will be over. Shockingly, TMZ also reported that Lohan was not immediately sent to jail because Judge Sautner decided to give her time to complete her nude photo shoot for Playboy magazine. Lohan lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley told the judge Lindsay must complete the shoot this week, which is reportedly netting her a cool $1 million. Lohan has one week to surrender and begin her fifth jail term, which is expected to start November 9.
