Mumford & Sons’ New Songs Get ‘New Life’ On Tour

‘Ghosts’ is one song being road-tested for Sigh No More follow-up. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Mumford and Sons Photo: MTV News Mumford & Sons recently told MTV News that they’re “still recording” the follow-up to their breakthrough Sigh No More album, which, while certainly understandable (given their schedule), is also rather unbelievable — especially since they’ve been working on the new spate of songs almost as long as they’ve been on tour. “Most of them, we’re letting people hear as we’ve played live shows. We’ve kind of always just done that,” frontman Marcus Mumford explained. “We’ve kind of written a song and felt like we get it up to a point where it’s ready to play live, and then we go … and road test it, see how it goes. For us, we find that’s a really helpful way of writing, and performing the song ideas that we have live is a crucial part, for us, of the songwriting process.” And that’s especially true of “Ghosts,” a new song the band officially unveiled last month during a Philadelphia radio station appearance. Though they’ve been working it into their live sets, the tune only took on its current — and, apparently, finished — form after performing it to audiences and tinkering with it afterward. “It’s probably the newest one we’ve been playing live, actually; that one came together really on our Canadian tour about a month ago, the first time started playing it,” multi-instrumentalist Winston Marshall said. “We tried recording it before, but it then took on a new life when we played it on that tour. … [The songs] always change when we play them live; the dynamics change a lot. When you play it to a new room, you’re playing it to new ears, and you’re listening to the song through their ears. So it’s really great to feel the song out.” And though it’s a new addition to their set, Mumford already count “Ghosts” among their favorites — if only for the fact that it actually gives them a chance to catch their collective breath. “It’s fun to play … it’s a kind of respite for us to just stand back and play a slower song,” Mumford said with a laugh. “It’s nice: gives us a moment to take stock.” Have you heard Mumford & Sons’ new songs live? Machine Gun Kelly Is Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2011!

The people have spoken, and MGK has beat out Lil Twist and Mac Miller in MTV News’ annual poll. By Rob Markman Machine Gun Kelly Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News Hate it or love it, the underdog is on top! Since he first began to make noise with his 2010 mixtape Lace Up, Machine Gun Kelly has worked his way into hip-hop’s collective consciousness. It wasn’t always pretty (see MGK’s August flash-mob arrest or his tiff with Yelawolf ), but it’s always been passionate. Now, thanks to that passion, Machine Gun Kelly can stand alone as MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011, it was revealed on “RapFix Live.” The competition was tough, and ever since the fan-driven Hottest Breakthrough poll opened on the RapFix blog last week, Kells was jockeying for the #1 position, fighting off Lil Twist and Mac Miller. A$AP Rocky, Future, French Montana, Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and Roscoe Dash were also in contention, but in the end, it was MGK who held the crown after hundreds of thousands of votes were tallied. When all the math was complete, MGK finished with 44 percent of the vote. Miller, whose Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 last month, was an early favorite. Twist, who finished in the #2 spot with 39 percent of the vote, proved to be MGK’s most formidable competition, thanks to his die-hard fans, Young Money team and best friend Justin Bieber, who all tweeted in support. In August, MGK appeared on “RapFix Live” and announced that he had signed with Diddy’s storied Bad Boy label, but rather than try to force him into the marketplace before his time, it was decided that the record company would continue to grow Kells organically. One of the things that first impressed Puff was Kelly’s dedicated fanbase, the same one that voted him the Hottest Breakthrough MC. “He has just such a movement, just hundreds and thousands of loyal fans that came from the place he came from in different parts of the country,” Diddy gushed during that “RapFix Live” appearance. “He wasn’t always the coolest kid in school, and just the process of growing up and the problems that they all encounter, they relate to him in such a way.” Influenced by DMX, Cleveland’s Machine Gun Kelly began battle-rapping around 2004 while he was still in high school. His passion grew from the corner ciphers to the studio, where he would lay tracks for his 2006 mixtape, Stamp of Approval. Back then, the MC (who got the Machine Gun part of his moniker because of his rapid-fire raps) was just getting his feet wet. In 2010, MGK would drop two mixtapes, 100 Words and Runnin’ and, his most notable tape, Lace Up. From there, the energetic spitter would develop his following thanks to his spirited live performances. From the very beginning of the competition, MGK had his eyes set on the #1 spot. “To be considered for the Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011, it’s obviously an honor, but I want to be the hottest. I’ve never been comfortable with sharing anything: I was a single child,” Machine Gun Kelly said on “RapFix Live.” Congratulations, MGK! Adele Calls Best Song Of 2011 Win ‘Overwhelming’

Singer emails MTV to say thanks for her ‘Rolling in the Deep’ topping our year-end list. By James Montgomery Adele accepts her award for MTV’s Best Song of 2011 Photo: MTV News On Wednesday (December 14), Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” bested the likes of Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass,” Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Katy Perry’s “Firework” to be named MTV’s Best Song of 2011 . And while that news isn’t exactly shocking to anyone who listened to the radio/ watched TV/ got on the Internet at any point this year, it was a surprise to Adele herself, who emailed MTV News — and included a photo of her kissing her newly won hardware — to express her gratitude and continued amazement at the deeply personal song’s success. “Thank you very much for your support!” she wrote. “It’s overwhelming how many people my life has resonated with. I find it quite hard to wrap my head around it.” To that end, though “Deep” was not only the year’s best-selling song (and her 21 the year’s best-selling album), Adele just can’t seem to comprehend how the tune has come to mean so much to so many. After all, she was writing about her own failed relationship, and though she wanted the song to be the lead single from 21, she never thought it would end up being more than a critic’s fave, let alone MTV’s Song of the Year. “I was pretty insistent it be a single. But I thought it would be more a tastemaker vibe than a hit,” she wrote. “I loved the song the minute I wrote it. The melody and the beat added some conviction to it. I think that’s why people have connected with it.” Though she’s currently recuperating from her recent throat surgery , Adele closed her email by promising big things on the horizon (and sending us holiday well-wishes). There’s talk of a full-blown arena tour and, of course, her expected triumph at February’s Grammys . In fact, if you thought 2011 was huge, just wait until 2012. “Happy holidays,” she wrote. “And see you next year.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Best Songs Of 2011

MTV’s Sway moderates a panel of our music experts as they count down the year’s top 10 bangers. By MTV News staff Rihanna Photo: Getty Images MTV’s list of the Best Songs of 2011 is like one of those old late-night commercials for awesome sampler albums: you’ve got your pop hit, a bit of rock, some hip-hop, R&B and a tune or two that you just can’t fully define, but which you definitely shook it to at some point over the past 12 months. Last week, MTV correspondent Sway Calloway moderated a spirited roundtable discussion with some of our very own experts: James Montgomery and Rob Markman (MTV News), Yomi Desalu and Malika Quemerais (MTV Music and Talent) and Tamar Anitai and Nicole Rosner (MTV.com). The panel managed to narrow it down to their top 10. While we’ll reveal #10 to #3, you’ll have to tune in to MTV at 4:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday night (December 14) to find out which songs snagged the top two spots. We will say that the year’s ultimate “Party Rock Anthem” made the cut, as did Rihanna’s waltz into the world of dubstep, a kitchen-sink empowerment anthem for anyone who’s ever felt marginalized, and an unexpected smash about a school shooting that is so catchy you might miss the sinister lyrics. Two of rap’s titans are also on the list, as is a pop princess who hopped on the Empowerment Express, an R&B singer who went the Dirty South route with two hip-hop icons, and a Latin rhymer asking for some eye contact over a club-banging beat. 10. “Firework,” Katy Perry Sure, its release as a single came in late 2010, but the true impact of “Firework” was felt in 2011. It rang in the New Year at #1, was Perry’s top single of the year and is nominated for the Record of the Year Grammy. More importantly, the song’s message touched fans all over the world as the pop star toured the globe. “I wrote this song for anyone who ever needed a song. To help them, to lift them up,” she told the crowd when I saw her at New York’s Nassau Coliseum this summer. The arena shook as every person sang along with her and pyro lit up the stage, raining down like a wall of sparklers. — John Mitchell 9. “Look at Me Now,” Chris Brown Tough, aggressive and completely unapologetic lyrically, Chris goes hard on the F.A.M.E. track, which also features rap heavy-hitters Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne. Grinding production, bleeping noises and bumping beats answer Brown’s siren call about not really caring very much what anyone thinks about him and his bad-boy rep. Why? Well, mostly because he’s “fresh than a mother—-er.” Given Brown’s nefarious past, it was a catchy, bold, brash statement from one of R&B’s biggest young stars. — Jocelyn Vena 8. “N—as in Paris,” Kanye West and Jay-Z Kanye West picked a fitting Will Ferrell sound bite for “N—as in Paris,” but not even Yeezy could have predicted just how much his and Jay-Z’s second Watch the Throne single would get the people going. After leading with “Otis,” the Throne’s kinetic follow-up joint seems to be the ultimate people’s choice. The brash title and profane hook (“Ball so hard mother—-ers wanna fine me”) doesn’t exactly scream radio hit, but that’s exactly what it has become, peaking at #1 on the Billboard Rap Songs chart. The song has become so popular that Hov and ‘Ye have performed it as many as eight times in a single night during their WTT Tour run. Now that sh– cray! — Rob Markman 7. “Pumped Up Kicks,” Foster the People If you went to a rock club or major festival, turned on satellite radio, or visited any retail store that sells skinny jeans, you were likely entranced by the from the Los Angeles trio’s breakout hit “Pumped Up Kicks.” The combination of lyrics about a psychotic, gun-toting teen and cheery, New Wave-y bass bounce, seven-dwarves-worthy whistling, hypnotic electronic effects and former jingle writer Mark Foster’s dreamy falsetto vocals revived the feel of mid-1990s alt-rock. Plus, as it turns out, this potential one-hit-wonder ended up having plenty more to offer. — Gil Kaufman 6. “Give Me Everything,” Pitbull Pitbull is perhaps music’s most underrated hitmaker, but if 2009’s “I Know You Want Me” and “Hotel Room Service” weren’t enough to convince the naysayers, the Cuban pop-rapper’s omnipresent “Give Me Everything” should’ve done the trick in 2011. On paper, a song featuring Pit, Ne-Yo, Afrojack and sexy-siren Nayer might seem a bit all over the place, but by the end of the four4-minute, 12-second jam, it all worked out quite nicely. There’s a reason the one-night stand ode hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The energetic dance groove, rapid rhymes and the track’s infectious hook were choice ingredients for the perfect party record. — R.M. 5. “Born This Way,” Lady Gaga Quick, name another top 10 hit that seeks to empower the LGBT community, drag queens, the disabled or anyone who is “black, white beige, chola descent … Lebanese … orient.” You can’t, because nobody but Mother Monster has the cojones to release “Born This Way” as the first single off an eagerly anticipated sophomore album. The tune mixes soaring rhetoric with equally pulse-quickening beats. Of course, it was accompanied by a viscous-liquid-dripping seven-minute video that added to Gaga’s mind-tripping visual canon and further established her as one of the biggest triple threats in music. — G.K. 4. “Party Rock Anthem,” LMFAO LMFAO’s ode to being the life of the party is the definition of a guilty pleasure, and it was an instant hit, topping the charts and playlists. With a fist-pumping beat and lyrics that are nearly as silly as the leopard-print pants RedFoo and SkyBlu typically rock, “Party Rock Anthem” had everyone from your grandma to Justin Bieber “shufflin’. ” — J.V. 3. “We Found Love,” Rihanna Rihanna fully embraced EDM on her Talk That Talk single. Produced by Calvin Harris, “We Found Love” is a swirling party track about love and loss. It took pop’s obsession with dance music to the next level thanks to its killer production. Sparse at times and completely enthralling at others, “WFL” is sad and joyous all at the same time. A call back to ’90s raves, the song made pop lovers want to break out their glow sticks and just dance. — Jocelyn Vena We’ve counted down #10 to #3, but will Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” or Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” come out on top in the final two? Ke$ha Drops Lil Wayne, T.I., Wiz Khalifa ‘Sleazy’ Remix

Remix also features Andre 3000 and is a bit racier than the original track. By Jocelyn Vena Ke$ha Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images As promised, Ke$ha and her boys Lil Wayne, T.I., Wiz Khalifa and Andre 3000 dropped a new remix of “Sleazy” on Tuesday (December 13). The Bangladesh-produced song originally appeared on K-Dollar’s 2010 Cannibal album before a remix featuring Andre popped up earlier this year. The latest version of the song is available for purchase and is all over blogs like Rapup.com . The song gets a bit dirtier and introspective thanks to verses from the guys that play up the track’s bumping beat. Wiz kicks it off, rapping about designer clothes and his lady love, Amber Rose. “OK, I’m young and I’m tatted/ I get them bucks like an addict/ Rocking this Christian Dior/ I spend so much on my fabric/ I got a wifey at home/ And what she wants she can have it,” he spits before going on about chilling on the beach, being rich and his prowess in the bedroom. Sitting in between Wiz and Tip is Andre’s recycled verse, before T.I. gets his shot and gets sexy, asking Ke$ha, “Do you know what to do with me?” before he launches into a verse all about how good he is to the ladies. “Bad bitches know me/ So don’t bother introducing me/ They want me more than diamonds,” he brags before explaining that it has a lot to do with his impressive anatomy. Wayne closes it out, adding his own signature flair. “We be on that sh– that no one be on/ That’s what we on/ Smoke that neon, Kings of Leon/ Dynamite, Napoleon/ Got some skinnies and a tee on/ And some Vans,” he rhymes about his famous sense of Weezy-fied style before the song circles back to the funky chorus, where Ke$ha declares that she doesn’t “need you or your brand-new Benz/ Or your bougie friends/ I don’t need love lookin’ like diamonds/ Lookin’ like diamonds.” If any of K’s fans or critics were wondering if she has the swagger to chill with the guys, she displayed some of her sass when she tweeted about the remix. “Question ANIMALS … who can say they got with Lil Wayne, T.I., Andre 3000 and Wiz Khalifa on a f—ing hot track??” she asked. “ill give u one clue … Its $.” What do you think of the “Sleazy” remix? Rachel Crow Sings, Asks: Can You Feel It?

She’s adorable and she’s mature far beyond her years, but Rachel Crow may be saying farewell to The X Factor after tonight’s results show. The young singer did her best to cover Michael Jackson’s “Can You Feel It” last night, but she simply lacked the vocal range to really make an impression with the song, leading the tempered praise from the panelists. “I adore you, but the song didn’t give you justice,” Paula Abdul said, while LA Reid added: “I didn’t believe you were having a great time.” Will this rendition cost Crow a shot at the title?
