Lil Wayne’s Sorry 4 The Wait Makes Up For Lost Time

Mixtape Daily looks at Weezy’s new offering, which includes his take on everything from ‘Racks’ to ‘Rolling in the Deep.’ By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: Erika Goldring/WireImage Mixtape Daily Special Delivery Headliner : Lil Wayne Tape : Sorry 4 the Wait Real Spit : For Lil Wayne , sorry is more than just a five letter word. Weezy’s apologies now come in the form of 12-track mixtapes. Tha Carter IV ‘s numerous pushbacks may have ticked off fans, so to make up for it, Tunechi offered up Sorry 4 the Wait, a free Internet download. Swiping beats from today’s most popular rap tracks, Weezy starts off bragging and boasting on “Tunechi’s Back,” his take on Meek Mill and Rick Ross’ Tupac ode. Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” gets reworked as well. During the song’s intro, Wayne places the blame on his manager Cortez Bryant, screaming, “Sorry for the wait, yeah Tez pushed the album back, man. Sorry!” With the disclaimer out of the way, Wayne spits nothing nice over the bouncy beat, weaving free-associative rhymes about promiscuous women, drugs and guns. One of the song’s better gun-busting, cocaine lines comes when Wayne raps, “Tunechi, Tunechi tote the tooly, f— around and pop ya/ My homeys got that white girl, call it Lady Gaga.” The Young Money boss breathes new life into YC’s “Racks,” no small feat considering the track has already been redone by about two dozen different rap acts so far. Still, Wayne makes it his own with unforgettable lines like, “I can’t f— with ho n—-s, I can’t trust these ho’s either/ Wake up early in the morning eat that p—y like cold pizza.” Most of Sorry ‘s tracks are upbeat and aggressive, but Wayne does manage to slow it down on “Marvin’s Room,” a retread of Drake’s track by the same name. “Sure Thing” comes next, and while it is less romantic than “Marvin’s Room,” Wayne still manages to make lyrics about taking pain pills for dinner sound smooth. Perhaps what’s most impressive is Birdman Jr.’s flip of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” The pounding drums and steady rhythm is the perfect backdrop for Wayne’s free-wheeling thought process. There are no deep meanings, no revelations or sophisticated musings, just lyrics about Wayne’s greatness sprinkled with references to ecstasy and ED medications: “Young Money, mother—-er, yeah we that sh–/ Yeah Weezy go hard like Cialis / Don’t love that bi—, I f— that ho/ She pop X, I smoke Os, tic-tac-toe.” Sorry 4 the Wait should hold folks over until Tha Carter IV ‘s August 29 release date (barring any more delays). Judging by the early response to this release, however, fans probably wouldn’t mind a second apology. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Taylor Lautner Has ‘Swag’ In ‘Abduction,’ Director Says

‘They’re gonna see a whole different Taylor Lautner from what Jacob is in the ‘Twilight’ pictures,’ John Singleton promises. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Taylor Lautner in “Abduction” Photo: Lionsgate Taylor Lautner will surprise people in his forthcoming film “Abduction,” according to John Singleton. The renowned director says that Lautner has abandoned his onscreen “Twilight” werewolf alter ego to play a butt-kicking teen in the film, due out in September. “I put him through his paces and I can say this to the MTV audience: They’re gonna see a whole different Taylor Lautner from what Jacob is in the ‘Twilight’ pictures,” Singleton told MTV News. “My goal as a director was to work with him as an actor, for him to have something that’s a different character.” So, what did Singleton draw out of his actor? Singleton said he wanted Lautner’s character to be “strong and charismatic. I’ve done some stuff that I’m sure all the young ladies will really love … and it’s beyond taking his shirt off. It’s about him having a different kind of swag than he does as Jacob. In this movie, he’s Nathan Harper and he’s a kickass dude in this movie.” The director explained that while Lautner plays tough in the flick, he was quite the softie on set, taking the time out to thank his fans for stopping by to watch him in action. “Taylor’s the most famous actor I’ve ever worked with in my whole career,” Singleton said. “When we were shooting this movie, we had 500 to 600 girls and their mothers off the set, trying to get on the set, trying to be around, which was cool.” Singleton said that the star handled all the attention like the seasoned pro that he is. “It was really funny because, you know, after we worked all these hours, he’d go out and he’d graciously shake peoples’ hands and sign autographs,” he said. “He’s phenomenal. I call him a trooper; he’s a real soldier.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Abduction.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Blink-182 To Release New Single ‘Up All Night’ Friday

Band has been talking about elusive comeback single since 2009. By Gil Kaufman Blink 182 Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Like a whisper campaign about a tatted-up unicorn, Blink-182 ‘s elusive first reunion single, “Up All Night,” has been the subject of chatter for years. The band first started talking about the tune in 2009, when they reunited after a nearly four-year hiatus, but because the recorded version of the song wasn’t quite finished at that point, they decided against playing the song live during their subsequent tours. But now they’re ready to pull back the curtain on the song, which is slated to premiere at 10:30 a.m. EST on Friday. The tune will roll out on powerhouse Los Angeles rock station KROQ (106.7 FM) and on the band’s official website , according to an announcement posted on the group’s official Facebook page . While recording on the band’s first new album since their self-titled 2003 disc was recently wrapped, a release date for the as-yet-untitled CD has not been announced. Blink went on indefinite hiatus in 2005 amid inter-band tensions and announced their reunion at the 2009 Grammy Awards. They then hit the road that summer along with Weezer and Fall Out Boy. Though they’ve kept it off the live list for two years, it’s likely “Night” will be added to the band’s set when they kick off their upcoming Honda Civic-sponsored tour dates with My Chemical Romance on August 5 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. In addition to MCR, the band will be joined by a rotating list of other support acts on the tour, including Manchester Orchestra, Rancid, Against Me! and Matt & Kim. Bassist Mark Hoppus sounded pumped about the new songs in a recent Facebook post , writing, “Currently listening to THE FIRST MIX FROM THE NEW ALBUM!! Sounds kick. Ass. Cannot wait until this album is released! BOOM!!!” Related Artists My Chemical Romance Fall Out Boy Weezer Blink 182

Foster The People Go Post-Apocalyptic For ‘Helena Beat’ Video

Band describes their ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ follow-up as ‘Lord of the Flies’ meets ‘Mad Max.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster The People Photo: MTV News Last week, Foster the People shared their plans to follow-up their dark-horse Summer Jam 2011 candidate “Pumped Up Kicks” with a Kenny G collaboration on their next album, even if Katy Perry beat them to the punch on that cameo. In the meantime, the guys are still pushing ahead with a brand new single and video, neither of which feature the sax majesty of G, but still promise to be thoroughly weird in their own right. “Our next single’s going to be ‘Helena Beat,’ and we just shot a video for it, which we’re just finishing now. I think today, actually, it was finished,” frontman Mark Foster told MTV News. “It’s like a short film, really. It’s post-apocalyptic, ‘Lord of the Flies’ meets ‘Mad Max,’ so, it’s a bunch of kids, and they kidnap us and take us into this warehouse, and there’s a really crazy twist at the end. But it’s super-visual, and it’s a mixture of really, like, bizarre circumstances — it’s dark, but it’s also pretty tongue-in-cheek and fun.” Foster said that the band also shot a clip for their song “Houdini” at Los Angeles’ iconic El Rey Theatre (“We shot a video there before we actually played there,” he laughed), but that it’ll be “Helena” that gets the full push at radio. And though it draws the unenviable task of having to follow in the footsteps of “Pumped Up Kicks,” the guys in Foster the People believe in the song’s power, mostly because it’s become their favorite moment in their ever-increasing live set. “‘Helena Beat’ is actually my favorite song in the set. … I get to run around with a guitar and bang on drums,” Foster laughed. “So, you know, it’s good. ” Related Artists Foster the People

Evanescence’s ‘What You Want’: Hear A Preview!

MTV News gives fans a preview of the band’s comeback single. By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee Photo: MTV News It’s been nearly four years since Evanescence have released a single , and during that time, it appeared very likely they’d never release another. But on Monday (July 11), the wait — and all the drama that surrounded it — finally came to an end, because Evanescence are officially back, with a roaring new single called “What You Want.” Last week, MTV News traveled to Nashville’s Blackbird Studio, where the band were putting the finishing touches on their upcoming, self-titled album (which their label, Wind-Up Records, just informed us is now due October 11 — one week later than previously reported), and they gave us an exclusive first listen at a handful of tracks, including “Want.” And now, we’re going to give you a sneak peek. Frontwoman Amy Lee had previously described the song as being “really different” from anything in the band’s back catalog, and, as you can tell, she wasn’t kidding. “What You Want” is most definitely a departure, quite possibly the heaviest song Evanescence have ever made. The guitars buzz like a hornet’s nest, the drums are pounding and primal, and the strings (arranged by Beck’s dad, David Campbell) swell and stab. Throw in a positively massive chorus and Lee’s vocal pyrotechnics, and you’ve got a song that’s powerful enough to shake rock radio to its very foundation. And that’s pretty amazing, considering its simple roots. “[Bassist] Tim [McCord] and [guitarist] Terry [Balsamo] and I wrote that song at my house in New York. We were just jamming, like, recording demos, and obviously the song has grown a lot since then, with everyone else,” Lee told us. “For me, it was — and I need to remember this, so I can apply it in the future — it wasn’t trying so hard to be some epic, massive chorus. I was just doodling around on the piano and the guys were like, ‘Do that. Whatever you just did, that’s an awesome melody.’ And I was like, ‘Really?’ Sometimes you just need your friends to be like, ‘Do that!’ ” Though it came from humble origins, “What You Want” deals with heady concepts, a trait that’s readily apparent throughout Evanescence’s new album. “It’s about freedom — that’s definitely a constant theme on the record — but, it’s like Evanescence, and me, and my relationship with the music and the fans, and coming to that [realization] of ‘This is what I’m supposed to do … I want to do this,’ ” Lee said. “And when it says, ‘Remember who you really are,’ that’s exactly everything you could assume it means.” For the time being, Evanescence fans are just going to have to make do with a snippet of “What You Want” (the full single is set to premiere in early August, Wind-Up said). But rest assured, you’re going to be hearing the song a lot in the near future, because, as Lee said, it’s not just the band’s comeback single, it’s also the beginning of a mission — one Evanescence are taking very seriously. “I feel like, not that I’m trying to do what’s important for the music industry, I’m doing what I want — we’re doing what we love. But, at the same time, it’s so refreshing for us to play music that we want to hear,” she explained. “It rocks, and not that there’s nothing going on that does, but less and less; that’s definitely not what’s dominating the airwaves. And it would be so amazing and it’s totally our dream to have that happen for us; not even just for us, but, like, we want to hear rock music again. “I think that, as a band, we’re really strong,” she continued. “Everybody’s just playing at the top of their game right now, they’re just putting it all in … and it was, like, that mentality the whole time we were working. Like, whatever it takes to make the most amazing thing possible.” What do you think of the “What You Want” sneak peek? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Videos Evanescence: First Listen

Britney Spears’ ‘Till The World Ends’ Gets R. Kelly Treatment

Following all-girl remix featuring Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha, R&B singer proffers his own mix of the song. By Jocelyn Vena R. Kelly Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images Did R. Kelly place his vote for his pick for Song of the Summer by jumping on a new remix of Britney Spears’ monster smash “Till the World Ends”? Following the all-girl remix featuring Nicki Minaj and the song’s writer, Ke$ha , this new version of the Femme Fatale single gets some love in the club from Kells. On the new mix, after Brit sings the first verse and the chorus, Kelly comes in singing, “Slide up in this club/ This beat’s got me in love/ Till I just don’t care/ It’s like I’m walking on air/ It’s a party right here.” He then goes on about partying till the world ends, his Auto-tuned vocals dancing over the track until the song’s breakdown, where he mixes his vocals with Spears’. Toward the song’s end, Kelly does some vocal runs over the song’s chorus as it plays out, keeping with the integrity of the Dr. Luke-produced track. That’s not the only Song of the Summer contender that’s getting reworked by a male pop star. Over the weekend, much to the delight of Mother Monster herself, Nick Jonas put his own signature acoustic singer/songwriter stamp on her summer contender “The Edge of Glory.” Lady Gaga tweeted , “Swoon! Nick Jonas singing ‘The Edge of Glory.’ On my way to press conference in Taichung, listening to it. So dreamy! X.” Using only his acoustic guitar, Jonas played his version of the triumphant pop track to a audience of fans who seemed charmed by his rendition of the Born This Way single. “@ladygaga the pleasure is all mine,” he later tweeted . “That is a beautiful song. Keep inspiring the world.” Which reworked track do you like better? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos Britney Spears: I Am The Femme Fatale Related Artists Britney Spears R. Kelly
