Lil Wayne Is ‘Lonely At The Top’ But Fears The Bottom

Weezy opens up to MTV News about ‘Nightmares of the Bottom’ track he’ll debut on Sunday’s ‘Unplugged.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Few artists ever reach the heights Lil Wayne has, and for the Young Money captain, that is both a gift and a curse. And it’s a dilemma that Weezy tackles on “Nightmares of the Bottom,” a new track off the New Orleans lyricist’s upcoming album Tha Carter IV. After performing the track for the first time during the taping of his “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” set to air Sunday on MTV, MTV2 and MTV.com, the self-proclaimed Martian broke down the song’s meaning. “I mean simply, sleeping at the top with nightmares of the bottom,” Wayne told MTV News’ Sway. “Everybody says it’s lonely at the top. It is lonely, so I dream, though, and the only thing I dream about is being down there with the people that ain’t lonely. Thank God I am alone.” With eight solo albums and more than 10 million records sold, Wayne has tasted too much success to see his stock dip, so for him, a fall back to earth is a definite fear, he admitted. “And that’s simply what it is: nightmares of the bottom,” he added before rapping the song’s lyrics: “Sleeping at the top/ Nightmares of the bottom/ Everybody wanna be fly, until you swat ’em.” “Lil Wayne Unplugged” features Tunechi performing acoustic versions of his already classic catalog and places Weezy in the same class as hip-hop luminaries Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill and LL Cool J, who also took the unplugged stage. “Lil Wayne is an amazing choice for Unplugged as he is at hip-hop’s forefront — leading a new generation of artists whose appeal spans across music genres and playlists,” Amy Doyle, MTV’s executive vice president of music and talent, said in a statement. “Lil Wayne’s skills, influence, and catalog are a powerful addition to the legacy of artists who have rocked the ‘Unplugged’ stage.” Don’t miss “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com.

Linkin Park’s ‘Iridescent’ Video Premieres

Clip for ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ soundtrack song matches franchise’s otherworldly vibe. By Kara Warner Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington on the set of “Iridescent” Keeping up with what seems to have become a great movie/music partnership, ” Transformers: Dark of the Moon ” director Michael Bay has once again enlisted Linkin Park to contribute a song to the film’s soundtrack, a remix of their song “Iridescent,” from their A Thousand Suns LP. On Thursday (June 2), the ” Iridescent ” video premiered on MTV.com. Fitting in with the thunderous, world-is-ending, intense, high-action vibe that revolves around the world of the “Transformers” films, the clip for ” Iridescent ” has an otherworldly, post-apocalyptic vibe. The video, which is entirely in black-and-white, seems to take place on another planet, in another world entirely, with a sense of weightlessness, combined with shadowy, translucent images of either a futuristic or lost civilization. There is also a bit of religious imagery, with a shot of the band in a “Last Supper”-like scenario at one point. Naturally, there are scenes from “Dark of the Moon” interspersed throughout, but there aren’t so many robots that they distract from the song or the band. “The ‘Transformers’ collaboration has been really fun for us. I mean, we grew up playing with the toys,” LP’s Mike Shinoda told MTV News when we visited the “Iridescent” set in April. “When we first got approached on the first one, we said yes based on the idea of taking that thing that we loved so much and bringing it to life in a modern way. As it’s gone on, that’s still a big part of it for us.” When asked why they chose “Iridescent” for “Dark of the Moon,” Shinoda said the song felt like a good fit. “We put out the record in the late part of last year, and even though it’s never been a single up until this point, [when we played it live] you could really hear the singing pick up momentum during that song,” he said. “It was just something that seemed a natural fit.” “Iridescent” marks the third pairing of Linkin Park and the “Transformers” franchise. The original “Transformers” soundtrack led off with Park’s track ” What I’ve Done ,” and the companion CD to sequel “Revenge of the Fallen” also gave LP the pole position with the tune ” New Divide .” What do you think of Linkin Park’s latest video? Drake Talks ‘Crafting’ DJ Khaled’s ‘I’m On One’ Collabo

‘That’s the first time anybody has ever heard all three of us on a record,’ Drizzy tells MTV News of teaming with Rick Ross, Lil Wayne. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Drake Photo: MTV News Drake is such a nice guy. When DJ Khaled approached Drizzy to appear on a track off of his upcoming Cash Money album, We the Best Forever, the Thank Me Later MC wanted to lend something memorable to his friend’s project. The result, “I’m On One,” Khaled’s latest single featuring Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and, of course, Drake. “Khaled waited, like, forever and a day. I was taking my sweet time trying to craft this piece of music because I knew he needed a special moment,” Drizzy told MTV News at the song’s video shoot in Miami. “When I did it, I was like, ‘OK, it’s gotta be me, Ross and Wayne.’ That’s the first time anybody has ever heard all three of us on a record.” After leaking the song onto the Internet on May 12, Khaled and company were out shooting the video for “I’m On One” this past weekend — just 15 days later — and that fact isn’t lost on Drake. “To be out here shooting a video, it’s amazing how things work nowadays,” he said. “I used to make music and never think anyone was gonna hear it, now I make music and two weeks later, we’re shooting crazy videos in Miami, living the life.” Aside from working with Wayne, who Drake is signed to and frequently shows appreciation for, the Toronto-born rapper spoke on his admiration for his “brother” Rozay. “That’s one of my favorite people to rap with in the world,” Drizzy said. “That’s family the same way YM is family, the same way that OVO is family,” he said, name-checking his Young Money and October’s Very Own teams. “Ross know what it is, MMG all day, I hold that close to my heart.” What do you think of “I’m On One”? Scotty McCreery’s Pals Thought ‘American Idol’ Was ‘A Far-Fetched Idea’

‘Scotty is a genuinely nice kid, a good Southern boy,’ one classmate tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Tami Katzoff Scotty McCreery performs during his hometown visit in Garner, North Carolina Photo: Steve Exum/Getty Images There are so many unusual things about “American Idol” finalist Scotty McCreery: his signature microphone technique, his preternatural ease onstage and, oh yeah, the fact that’s he’s both a kick-ass baseball pitcher for his high school team, the Garner Trojans, and one of the key members of Garner Magnet High School’s vocal ensemble, Die Meistersingers. Alec Hulmes, 17, has known McCreery since preschool, and they’ve lived in the same neighborhood and played baseball together their whole lives. On the eve of Scotty’s top-three performance, he told MTV News that ever since they were in elementary school, he remembers McCreery singing Elvis tunes on the bus while doing that “little eye thing.” And while they were amused, Hulmes said they often complain, “Dude, Scotty, shut up for one second! Just shut up! Stop singing!” But since McCreery’s epic run on “Idol,” things have changed. “Now every time he sings, it’s like, ‘Go ahead, Scotty, keep going, keep going!’ ” Hulmes laughed. The school’s “blue crew” started out as a student cheering section for football and basketball games, but over the past few months, it has transformed into an all-Scotty cheering section. The town of 27,000 just outside Raleigh, North Carolina, has also gotten fully behind their favorite son, with billboards, signs, banners and viewing parties. Garner Magnet High School student Jay Booth, 17, who has known Scotty since freshman year, said that these days, you can’t walk 15 feet in town or at their school without seeing some McCreery-boosting paraphernalia. There’s a packed-to-the-rafters viewing party in the school gym every Thursday night and announcements throughout the week reminding students to vote for Scotty. Check out Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina ‘s hometown visits! “I think Scotty is a genuinely nice kid, a good Southern boy,” Booth said. “He always cares about everyone else and is respectful to others.” Before he was picked for the show, Scotty had talked to his pals about maybe doing “Idol” one day. “We didn’t think anything of it, because it seemed like such a farfetched idea,” Booth admitted. Once McCreery did try out and made the show, his teammates saw the huge reaction and realized that it could turn into a very big deal. Yes, there’s the fame and the TV love and the potential recording contract. But preschool friend Kyle Tobin, 18, said there’s another fringe benefit that would warm the heart of any 17-year-old boy. “He used to joke about not being able to pull women,” Tobin said. “But [ when he came home last weekend ], all you could hear was women’s voices.” He might seem like a quiet, unassuming Southern boy on the show, but Booth said during football and basketball games, Scotty was always the loudest fan, yelling his support for the home team and ripping off his shirt even in cold weather. “He’s normally a pretty quiet kid if you don’t know him very well,” Booth said. “So whenever you see him at a football game screaming at the other team, it’s pretty funny.” Considering that he’s already heard some original compositions that were “far beyond” Scotty’s 17 years, Booth predicted that if his buddy wins (actually, when he wins), McCreery will make a true roots country record that would stick to the style he’s fostered on “Idol.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Lady Gaga’s ‘Edge Of Glory’ Is A ‘Bold Move,’ Co-Producer Says

‘This record is all heart,’ Fernando Garibay tells MTV News about the sax-driven record. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga ‘s “Edge of Glory” is an undeniably pure pop track. The Born This Way single dropped earlier this week, and the song’s co-producer, Fernando Garibay, says he’s still “very surprised,” “floored,” even, by the song’s release. “You know what’s crazy, as we were making the record … ‘Born This Way’ is a statement song, but here with ‘Edge of Glory, it’s very personal to her,” he explained. “It is very personal and very real; it’s a real moment. This record is all heart.” Garibay worked on “Edge of Glory” with Gaga and DJ White Shadow , who also revealed some details about the song to MTV News before its release, calling Gaga’s vocal delivery on the track particularly moving. “This song’s had room for her too … this is her natural tone. The vocal was one take,” White Shadow said. “The whole thing from top to bottom was her, just backstage singing it all the way through.” At the pop star’s request, Garibay threw in a heartbeat and made sure during production that it was clear Gaga’s “finding acceptance in the bridge.” He added, “It’s a bold move on her part to put this out there the way it is, where the full version is intact [on the radio]. When was the last time you heard a musical solo sax break in the middle of a song on the radio? It was innovative as a song and it was totally guided by the emotions and the heart. That’s what we did here. She wanted to put sax on it … Her references were E Street Band and Bruce Springsteen, so the isolation of what the sax represents in the music dichotomy, what it represents in the whole spectrum of music,” he said of the saxophone section, which is actually played by E Street’s Clarence Clemmons. “And that’s how we captured that feeling. It’s like that moment of acceptance and letting go. … She said, ‘Dude, there’s no boundary, go all the way.’ Her soft side is just as intense and as emotional as her intense, hands-in-the-air side you see onstage,” he added. Garibay couldn’t even imagine what a video for the song might look like. “We’re all excited,” he said. It’s always a surprise, but whatever it is, it’s going to be epic. … In this case, it’s edgy because it’s not edgy.” What’s your favorite Born This Way single so far? Tell us in the comments! Christina Perri Says Her ‘Life Changed’ After ‘Jar Of Hearts’

Singer is on tour with James Blunt after her song aired on an episode of ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ By Jocelyn Vena Christina Perri Photo: MTV News Christina Perri is currently on the road with a man who, much like her, found fame after penning a track about love and heartbreak. Perri is touring with the “sweetest dude on the planet,” James Blunt, and when she first found out about the gig, she had a feeling their fans would find common ground, a theory that has now been proved true. “I was very excited. I knew the venues were going to be awesome, small little intimate theaters,” Perri told MTV News. “And then, to be there [at tour kickoff on Wednesday], and see that our audiences are the same because so many people knew the words to my song [‘Jar of Hearts’] that knew the words to his songs, I mean, that tells you right there, so it was a really great pairing,” she said. “And I’m so excited now.” But a year ago, a major tour like this one was the farthest thing from Perri’s mind — until one fateful night. Last summer, Perri went from small-town girl to Top 40 radio mainstay, with the success of her single “Jar of Hearts.” And though a quick rise to fame is often described as happening “overnight,” Perri truly is an overnight sensation. “When my song was on the TV show ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ my life changed that night, like, it was very fast,” she recalled. “It’s 2011, and that was last year [and] with the Internet everything [it’s all very] ‘right now.’ So when the song aired on the show, by midnight, I never had to go back to waitressing again. “I just existed; I didn’t exist— and then I did,” she explained of the feeling. “I flew to New York City, I signed a record deal like, boom, boom, boom, boom,” she continued. “And it hasn’t stopped, which is a good thing, and I’m trying to stay grounded and focus and keep doing what I’m doing every day, but it’s been this magical thing where, like, I don’t have to wake up and cover my tattoos and be a waitress. All the hard work … ended up really working out. I’m grateful.” Perri will release her debut album, Lovestrong, on May 10. Are you a Christina Perri fan? Tell us in the comments!
