Kanye West Joins Katy Perry On ‘American Idol’ For ‘E.T.’

Duo play up hit song’s intergalactic theme with laser-heavy performance. By Adam Graham Katy Perry performs on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: FOX Katy Perry transported “E.T.” to the “American Idol” stage Thursday (April 21) and even brought a special guest along with her: Kanye West. The two reprised their recent #1 hit on the “Idol” stage in a pre-taped appearance during the “Idol” results show. The performance kicked off with Kanye’s opening verse piped in via music video, so it was a surprise when the Coachella headliner appeared onstage with Perry later in the song. Perry was carried on to the stage, arms outstretched, by three dancers dressed in alien getups, who hoisted Russell Brand’s better half high above their heads. Perry was decked out in a white, form-fitting bodysuit tricked out with pink LED lights and a long white cape. She wore some sort of futuristic space crown atop her head, making her look like the queen of a far-off pop planet. Green lasers crisscrossed the darkened “Idol” stage as Perry was placed into a throne-like cage, which was carted across the stage by her team of a half-dozen alien dancers. West took the stage in a leather coat accented with a fur overlay and exercised self-censorship on his verse’s “alien sex” line. West and Perry faced off at center stage, moving toward and away from each other to play up the tension between them. In the song’s closing moments, Perry softly caressed West’s cheek before retreating back to her throne, where the lights dimmed and her suit lit up with blinking, zigzagging lights. Perry and West both have a history with “American Idol.” Perry chipped in as a guest judge during the early rounds in season nine, at one point threatening to throw a Coke in Kara DioGuardi’s face, and performed “Waking Up in Vegas” — in an Elvis jumpsuit, no less — on the show during season eight. Earlier that same season, West took to the “Idol” stage to perform “Heartless,” from his 808s and Heartbreak LP, which would later be transformed into a winning performance by that season’s champ, Kris Allen . The Strokes Play Sidekick 4G Party, Start Work On Next Album

With Angles just released a month ago, band is already working on new material. By Matt Elias Julian Casablancas Photo: MTV News BEVERLY HILLS, California — The Strokes aren’t the first band that comes to mind when you think of glitzy Hollywood events. Maybe that’s why they seemed to be sporting WTF grins when they hit the carpet for T-Mobile’s Sidekick 4G launch party in Beverly Hills on Wednesday night. Perhaps it was seeing the latest “Dancing With the Stars” cast members on the same carpet or attempting to talk over the thumping base from the DJ inside, but you got the impression that the indie band was a little bit outside of its element. But hey, T-Mobile has some rock cred on its side — after all, Blink-182 chose the last Sidekick launch event to play their first reunion show. And the Strokes had the same duties on Wednesday night — playing to Hollywood’s young and beautiful. So when it comes to scaling down their set at a party like this, the band has conflicting views on playing new material versus the familiar hits. “I guess me personally, I prefer playing new songs, but the crowd prefers old songs, reaction-wise,” singer Julian Casablancas told MTV News. “So it’s always weird ’cause you could play a song that’s mind-blowing and they’d just be like ‘wow,’ shedding a tear, but they’ll be silent. So you’ll think, ‘That sucks and we’ll never do that again.’ And then you play like an old hit that you played a thousand times, it’s kind of boring, but they’re loving it. So you’re like, ‘Let’s do that!’ ” Speaking of even newer songs, the Strokes, who recently played the South by Southwest festival in Texas, confirmed that they’re starting work next week on the follow up to Angles, which they released just a month ago. But Casablancas admits that they’ve gotten “zero far” on the new project. Whether it will share anything sonically with Angles, Casablancas said, “I don’t know, we haven’t even started. We’re gonna play each other’s songs and then who knows what they might be? I’m curious myself.” Related Artists The Strokes

Lady Gaga Apologizes For ‘Retarded’ Comment

‘To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images When Lady Gaga dropped “Born This Way” earlier this year, the tune immediately drew comparisons to Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” Shortly after the song was released, Gaga shared with the world that the pop queen liked the song and gave the pop princess her seal of approval. Now Gaga has once again been asked about the comparisons in a new interview with NME . And she didn’t seem pleased by the line of questioning. “That’s retarded. If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It’s the same one that’s been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I’m the first f—ing artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn’t mean I’m a plagiarist, it means I’m f—ing smart. Sorry.” The issue hit newsstands on Tuesday and by late Wednesday night the singer had issued an apology to her fans about her choice of words when defending herself and the chart-topping tune. “I consider it part of my life’s work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully,” she said in a statement to Perezhilton.com . “To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake requires honesty to make.” She then went on to quote some lyrics from the feel-good dance track: “Whether life’s disabilities left you outcast, bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today.” What do you think of Gaga’s apology for using the “R” word? Casey Abrams Steals A Kiss, The Night On ‘American Idol’

Bearded rocker plants one on judge Jennifer Lopez on Wednesday’s 21st-century songs episode. By Adam Graham Casey Abrams performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX This season, “American Idol” has sort of become a game of “what will Casey Abrams do next?” And after taking on Nirvana , nearly fainting on live television and dialing himself way back with a hushed take on Nat King Cole’s ‘Nature Boy,” Abrams topped even himself on Wednesday’s (April 20) “Idol” by planting a kiss on Jennifer Lopez’s cheek while finishing off his performance. The smooch came at the close of the bearded rocker’s aggressive rendition of Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe,” from the group’s 2002 debut album, Songs About Jane. (Wednesday’s theme was “songs from the 21st century.” ) Abrams, using his intense glare to embody the bitter scorn in frontman Adam Levine’s lyrics, stalked either side of the stage in a stiff, upright manner before approaching the judges’ table at the song’s end. He locked himself on Lopez like a guided missle and leaned in toward her, his head mere inches from that of People magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman . They shared an intimate stare before she broke the glance and turned her head to her right, toward Steven Tyler. Abrams sang the song’s final line directly to her — “is there anyone out there?/ ‘Cause it’s getting harder and harder to breathe — and caught her off-guard by pecking her on the cheek before walking away. Randy Jackson threw up his arms in dismay, Tyler exclaimed, “You did what I’ve been trying to do for two months!” and Lopez giggled like a giddy school girl. The fireworks weren’t over yet. After Lopez and Jackson praised Abrams for his soft lips and his risk-taking, respectively, Tyler dropped what appeared to be an F-bomb, calling Abrams “f—ing good” in his appraisal of the singer. (Censors caught it, though a little lip-reading goes a long way.) The audience erupted, Abrams covered his mouth in surprise and Lopez’s jaw hung agape, while Tyler continued as if nothing had happened. Jackson stood up from his chair as if to signal he was calling for a time-out, and made Tyler aware of his gaffe. “He’s so darn good,” Tyler corrected himself. Host Ryan Seacrest, sporting a faux-Abrams beard on his face, remarked, “The wheels have fallen off this program,” and thanked him for “changing the course of this show.” Backstage after the performance, cameras caught up with Abrams and he recapped what had just happened onstage. “I kissed Jennifer Lopez and I made Steven Tyler swear,” he said. “That”s always a plus.” So now, once again, the question remains: What will Casey Abrams do next? Demi Lovato Is ‘Forever Grateful’ For ‘Sonny With A Chance’

Star is focusing on music career after leaving treatment for eating disorder and self-mutilation. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage On Tuesday, fans were shocked to learn that Demi Lovato would no longer be the star of her hit Disney series “Sonny With a Chance.” She came to the decision after realizing that “being in front of a camera would make me nervous.” The singer recently left a treatment center to deal with some personal issues, including an eating disorder and self-mutilation. Now that Lovato is focused on staying healthy, she is also focusing on the next stage of her career. She took to Twitter late Tuesday to thank her fans for standing by her through her recent personal problems. “Thank you all so much for your support with the decisions I’ve decided to make with my career. I love you guys,” she wrote. ” ‘Sonny’ was a chapter in my life I will be forever grateful for. Thank you all for watching. Can’t wait to see the new format for ‘So Random’!” She even thanked her “Sonny” co-star Tiffany Thornton, who will stay on for the “Sonny” spin-off “So Random.” After Thornton tweeted , “I couldn’t be more proud of the woman you’ve become these past 6 months,” Lovato welcomed the warm words, tweeting back, “I love you so much T. and I miss ALL of you. But I’m especially thankful God gave me our everlasting friendship. Love you!” Lovato officially announced that her time on “Sonny” is over on Tuesday, but she’s been teasing her focus on music for the last few weeks. “Getting a healthy workout in then heading to … the studio,” she wrote last week. And the day before that, she revealed whom she might be hitting the studio with on this next album. “@Timbaland007 for real though … Are you ready?! Idk about you but I believe magic is gonna come out of this collab,” she said. “@Timbaland007 I was ready before I was born!! @Timbaland007 cannot wait!!!” In the past, Lovato has made it clear that she wants to go for a more urban sound on her next album, so working with Timbaland would make sense. “I’m now just taking that next step and learning how to make my music more radio-friendly but also stay very artistic, and for me that’s R&B,” Lovato told MTV News last August. “I can put my vocal stylings on songs that are R&B and it showcases my vocals more than just singing really loud on a rock song.” In fact, Timbaland wasn’t the only A-lister she had on her collabo wish list. “I would love for Drake to be on the album,” Lovato said . “It’s kind of like a pipe dream. I would also like to do a song with Trey Songz. It would be hot! Yeah, it would be really good.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Demi Lovato Related Photos The Evolution Of: Demi Lovato Related Artists Demi Lovato

Lady Gaga Calls ‘Judas’ Leak ‘A Slow Death’

Gaga opens up about the Born This Way creative process in latest ‘Gagavision.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage This week’s “Gagavision” theme is “Music From Born This Way, ” as Gaga revealed more details about her May 23 album release. The video includes a possible preview to one of the album’s tracks, shots from her forthcoming HBO special and her thoughts on last week’s leak of her latest single, “Judas.” Perhaps a tease to one of the album’s tracks, the music for the “Gagavision” video includes a song that starts off with slow, dramatic church-organ keyboard notes as Gaga says, “My fans are my sunshine. They are the sunshine in the darkness of the arena. “Looking out into the darkness, I feel really fearless and strong and brave.” A montage of Gaga rehearsing and making phone calls and her fans holding up signs plays as the song’s synth tempo kicks in. Dressed like a space-age Cruella De Vil, Gaga heads off to do a promo. “The greatest challenge in writing Born This Way is I had to become confident and secure in myself,” she explained. “I had to leave my insecurity behind, whatever residual scars behind. I spent two years delving deep into my wombs; the blood transfusion.” The video even addresses the “Judas” leak that took place right before she released it to the masses on April 15. She likens it to a disembodiment, saying, “A slow death! Just put me out of my f—ing misery, just put that sh– out. They were tearing [the song] limb for limb. First it was the arm of the song, then the liver. … “I wrote it really quick,” she later says, while lounging fully clothed in an empty bathtub. “I mean, all of the songs on the album, to be completely candid, the creative process is approximately [a] 15-minutes process. It’s 15 minutes of vomiting my creative ideas in the forms of melodies, usually, or chord progressions and melodies and some sort of a theme, lyric idea. And then I spend days, weeks, months, years fine tuning. But the idea is, you honor your vomit.” The video ends with Gaga teasing her Monster Ball and the “polarizing” cover art for Born This Way . Fittingly, new teasers for her HBO special, which was taped at her Monster Ball shows at Madison Square Garden earlier this year, also hit the Net . The special airs May 7. In one promo, Gaga hits the streets of New York City dressed in a studded leather jacket and high platform (and heelless) ankle boots, as “Born This Way” plays in the background. It leads to shots of the madness at MSG leading up to the show, which is eventually teased in the clip. In the second, shorter preview, shots of her performance is teased while her new single, “Judas,” plays. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga
