Ke$ha Touched By Fan’s Tattoo

Singer tells MTV News about gay fan inspired by her song ‘Animal.’ By Gil Kaufman Ke$ha Photo: MTV News Ke$ha knows all about the perks of being a headliner. On her Get $leazy Tour , the singer gets to call all the shots, blast her fans in the face with tons of glitter and handpick which dudes she wants to party and share the stage with. But it’s not all backstage shenanigans and groupie love. When MTV News sat down with the “Blow” singer in New York earlier this week before her gig at Roseland Ballroom, Ke$ha said that amid the nightly onstage parties there have also been some poignant moments on her first headlining outing. “Best moment? There are so many. Every night’s amazing. I have kids outside right now chanting my name and it’s awesome,” she said of the first leg of the tour. “There was one night a fan came onstage, I invited him onstage, and he had a tattoo of the dollar sign. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s awesome! Badass. You’re part of the cult, man.’ ” And then, she said, he began to cry and explained that he was able to come out of the closet to his friends and family thanks to her song “Animal.” “And I’m standing onstage about to sing a song about growing back a pair of testicles [“Grow a Pear”] and I had tears rolling down my face and chills all over my body,” she said. “Because that’s really the reason I do music, to inspire people to be themselves.” Ke$ha has been a vocal supporter of the “It Gets Better” video project , which aims to help gay, bisexual and transgender youth find hope in the face of teasing and bullying. The “Get $leazy” juggernaut continues on Saturday night with a show at Clarion University in Clarion, Pennsylvania. Are you planning to see Ke$ha on her Get $leazy Tour? Tell us in the comments. Jacob Lusk: Lackluster on American Idol?

Jacob Lusk’s take on “Bridge Over Troubled” water on American Idol last night felt slightly off. Not full-on bad by any means, just … off. Do you agree? Steven Tyler does not. “How much of you you put into a song is phenomenal,” the judge said. “Those last three notes, and how well you fit in with the choir, is just incredible.” “You’re such a gifted vocalist!” Jennifer Lopez, People’s Most Beautiful woman of 2011 , added. “I didn’t want to let you give me the chills, but you did.” Does it give you the chills? Idol Judges Actually Criticize Haley Reinhart!

Haley Reinhart sang Blondie’s “Call Me” Wednesday night, and she certainly nailed the song’s calling card – the “Call me!” exclamations in the chorus. But she botched some notes and despite having all kinds of fun up there on stage, sort of lost her way. So much so that the judges even criticized her! Watch her performance here and see if Reinhart deserved it: Haley Reinhart – Call Me (American Idol) “I didn’t love at the beginning of it,” opined Randy. “I don’t know if it was the song that didn’t do it for me. It just wasn’t a showcase for your voice.” Steven concurred, and Jennifer said that “If I’m going to be honest, I’m going to agree with Randy.” By J. Lo standards, that’s tearing a new one! Will she be in the American Idol bottom three? You tell us.

‘American Idol’ Recap: Haley Reinhart, James Durbin Shine On Movie Night

Casey Abrams delivers a jazzy Nat King Cole tune, while Stefano Langone hopes it isn’t the end of the road for him on ‘Idol.’ By Eric Ditzian Haley Reinhart performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox She’s gone but not forgotten. The ghost of Pia Toscano was everywhere on Wednesday’s (April 13) “American Idol,” from an opening montage reminding viewers that “every vote counts,” to a poster in the audience that read “I miss Pia” to the mentors’ many invocations of the eliminated finalist’s name. But Pia, alas, is gone and the show, as they say in Hollywood, must go on — in this case to Tinseltown itself. The theme was songs of the cinema , and like last week, we got a show with no bombs and a few blockbusters. Paul McDonald kicked things off with Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” from “Risky Business.” Unlike Tom Cruise in that classic ’80s flick, however, Paul didn’t perform the song in his underwear, a tactic that would likely have assured the guy a spot in the finals. Nonetheless, he kicked the show off in style, a high-energy performance in which he ditched his guitar and sashayed around the stage but didn’t succumb to the silly dance moves we’ve seen from him in the past. The judges loved his rose-embroidered suit, loved his sax player, but more than anything else, they loved his energy. “I love your crazy, wild abandon,” said Steven Tyler, while Randy argued America had just witnessed the opening number at a forthcoming McDonald concert. Next up was Lauren Alaina, whom mentor Jimmy Iovine dubbed not only a better singer than Miley Cyrus but one capable of burying the Disney starlet’s own rendition of “The Climb.” What’s more, Jimmy delivered a message to all of the viewers at home: Lauren’s the contestant who deserves to gobble up Pia’s voting bloc. Her ballad would certainly appeal to fans of the departed singer, though Lauren’s tune was hardly as pitch-perfect as previous Pia songs. What Lauren delivered was a performance that was, in terms of emotion and comfort level on the stage, far superior to anything Pia had delivered. “I love the tear you have in your voice. It’s a cry. It’s something that really transmits,” Jennifer Lopez said. “You sang it so beautifully, so beautifully. You don’t need to steal anybody’s votes. You’re getting your own.” It remains to be seen just how many votes of his own Stefano Langone will be getting. But during his cover of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road,” he made a serious bid to attract enough support to stay safe for another week. He started off weakly, his vocals seemingly not up to the task of nailing the song’s high notes. Yet as the music built, Stefano stepped up, letting loose vocally and showing more artistry than we’ve perhaps ever seen from him. Predicting what Boyz II Men would soon tell him, Jackson said, “Your man Stefano just slayed the song.” The other judges agreed. “This is so not the end of the road for you,” Tyler said. “This is the beginning.” The same could be said of Scotty McCreery, who can do no wrong in the judges’ eyes nor, it appears, in those of the public. The 17-year-old suggested he was going back to his country roots with George Strait’s “I Cross My Heart,” as if he’d ever strayed far from them. Call it returning to his strengths or continuing to exploit them — whatever the case, Scotty once again busted out a mature performance that could become a hit on country radio tomorrow. He even took a few more vocal risks than usual, including a sustained note at the finale that was easily three times longer than any other he’d belted out all season. “Everybody wants us to be tough with you guys, but the truth is y’all are so damn good,” Lopez said. “All I really want to say is wow. That was really good.” Jackson seconded that assessment, and raised her one. “Look at this guy right here,” he said. “A star is born on this stage.” Casey Abrams, rocking an ascot and a severely trimmed beard, followed Scotty onto the stage. He was unsure if should sing Phil Collins or Nat King Cole, but ultimately went with a slow and jazzy take on Cole’s “Nature Boy” that allowed him to whisper and growl and scat and, of course, slap some on the bass. The judges certainly thought Casey made the right choice. They praised his artistry and the educational value of his music, comparing him to Norah Jones, Michael Bubl

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Bollywood Remix Is ‘Magical,’ Producers Say

Composers Salim-Sulaiman says Gaga had a ‘very positive response’ to their version. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Shortly after dropping a country-fried version of “Born This Way,” Indian composers Salim-Sulaiman were approached to do a Bollywood version of the song , breathing new life into the chart-topping track and putting their own Desi seal on it. “It was kind of difficult to start with,” Sulaiman Merchant told MTV News, crediting entertainment website Desi Hits! for helping to curate the collaboration. “It’s been such a big track, it’s been very popular, and when you consider the style, it’s very aggressive. It’s got all the stuff that’s required to make it a nice clubby track, so for us, the most important thing was: How do you get it into a zone where it’s palpable to the Indian flavor? And the first thing we did was bring in a sitar, and that changed the flavor a little bit. We kept the aggression but changed the style and made it a little more four on the floor, a little more house.” Salim Merchant added that “we wanted to bring in an Indian sound … and give a Sufi touch as well.” He explained that after getting over some initial nerves, “It’s fantastic how it all turned out. There was this little pressure because the song was #1. I guess once we put that baggage behind … it was magical. Once we started it, everything came into place. It became a celebration.” While Gaga is a global superstar, Sulaiman said she has yet to really permeate India’s pop culture. “Lady Gaga hasn’t been as popular as we would like it to be over here, so this track wasn’t as big before,” he said. “We finished the mix, and now it’s getting into the zone where it’s gaining popularity. It’s a great way to get eyeballs and ears onto Lady Gaga.” Has Gaga given the guys any indication of how she feels about the track? “She has liked it,” Salim said. “She did mention she really loves it. When we did send her the final version, we did get a big very, very positive response. She really loved it. That’s what she mentioned. I’m really happy. Finally the artist is Gaga about the song.” What do you think of the Bollywood version of “Born This Way”? Let us know in the comments! Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ Musical May Become Feature Film

Reports have Tom Hanks and Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black attached to the project. By James Montgomery Billie Joe Armstrong performs with the cast of “American Idiot” Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images It’s been green-lit, killed, resurrected and put on the back burner, but now it appears that the long-in-the-works film version of Green Day’s American Idiot album might finally become a reality. On Wednesday (April 13), Reuters reported that Universal is in negotiations to pick up the screen rights to the Broadway version of “Idiot,” and has hired Michael Mayer &#8212 who directs the stage production &#8212 to shoot the movie version. Reuters also reported that Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning writer of 2008’s “Milk,” is “in discussions” to write the screenplay, and that Tom Hanks will serve as producer on the film, along with Green Day themselves. (Hanks and his business partner Gary Goetzman were producers on the film version of the Broadway smash “Mamma Mia!,” the musical based on the songs of ABBA.) All of that means that, after a voyage that started way back in 2004 &#8212 when Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News that the bandmembers were “talking” to screenwriters about adapting the album for the big screen &#8212 American Idiot could finally find its way to your local multiplex. In 2006, Armstrong promised fans that the film version of Green Day’s hit album would “definitely … happen,” but the band instead turned their attention to creating their next album (2009’s 21st Century Breakdown ) and a stage version of Idiot, which premiered at Berkeley, California’s Berkeley Repertory Theater in ’09 before heading to Broadway. Still, they remained adamant that a film would be coming, with Armstrong telling The Associated Press that it would echo the feel of cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Hanks’ reported attachment to the project is also interesting, considering that last year, Green Day dismissed his involvement as “just talk.” A spokesperson for Green Day could not be reached for comment by press time. Meanwhile, the “American Idiot” musical will officially end its Broadway run on April 24, with Armstrong reprising his role of St. Jimmy. Rihanna Addresses ‘X Factor’ Rumors

‘It’s something that I would have loved to do,’ singer says on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic Rihanna was rumored to be a potential judge on “X Factor,” alongside Simon Cowell and her former label boss L.A. Reid . However, the songstress confirmed to Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday (April 13) that while there were discussions about her joining the show, she couldn’t put her career on hold long enough to commit. “I just heard about it actually, but, yes, it’s something that I would have loved to do, actually. But our schedule doesn’t allow and it’s a demanding schedule to be on that show. You have to be around months at a time, which is impossible for me.” What was easier to schedule was getting Britney Spears on the remix of her track “S&M.” “It was automatic; it was a go. She was great, really professional,” she said of the track, which was released earlier this week. “I think that’s what makes this collaboration so successful: It’s two female artists within the same genre of music. We have similar sounds. It’s very unexpected to see two artists collaborate and get together. The fans are really appreciative of that.” She added that while the song is “very provocative,” she thinks people need to take the lyrics and redirect the message to be about something more than just sex. “When I first heard this record, I automatically knew those words didn’t mean [that] … it was about my love-hate relationship with the media,” she explained of the message, one that Spears can also certainly relate to. “I knew what the song was to me and I wanted to make that point in the video. The video got banned in a lot of countries even though I didn’t think it was that raunchy. I thought it was fun and quirky. I really didn’t expect the song to go this far.” Rihanna’s upcoming busy schedule includes performing at the Billboard Music Awards next month and co-headlining the V Festival with Eminem in the U.K. this August.
