Quentin Tarantino’s Spaghetti Western: What We Know So Far

Details are beginning to fall in place for director’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ follow-up. By Eric Ditzian Quentin Tarantino Photo: Charles Eshelman/ FilmMagic For years, Quentin Tarantino has been talking about the kooky idea of making a spaghetti western-esque film that explores American slavery. Now multiple reports suggest he might be moving forward with a project in a similar vein. Nothing’s confirmed yet, of course, but all this chatter does seem to indicate that Tarantino’s next production following the Oscar-winning, $300 million-grossing success of 2009’s “Inglourious Basterds” will, in fact, be a spaghetti western. There have been, until now, numerous projects the filmmaker was said to be considering , though he has long stated a desire to explore the western genre. “I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time,” Tarantino told us late in ’09 of the slavery pic. “That’s definitely in the garden, for lack of a better metaphor. That is definitely one of my roses.” So what do we know so far? Back in 2007, Tarantino spoke at length to Britain’s Telegraph about that project, calling it the Southern equivalent of a western. “I want to do movies that deal with America’s horrible past with slavery and stuff but do them like spaghetti westerns, not like big issue movies,” he said. “I want to do them like they’re genre films, but they deal with everything that America has never dealt with because it’s ashamed of it, and other countries don’t really deal with because they don’t feel they have the right to.” Tarantino, instead, chose to explore an alt-history take on World War II with “Basterds.” When MTV News caught up with him late last year, he confessed that he still hadn’t committed to his next project, though he did say that rumors of taking on an adaptation of “The Shadow” were untrue. Only in recent days has talk of a spaghetti western, devoid of a connection to slavery, picked up steam. Deadline reported that Tarantino said he has completed the script for the new movie and that the writing, unlike his work on “Basterds” and “Kill Bill,” came together quite quickly. Meanwhile, the actor Franco Nero gave an Italian-language interview at the Los Angeles Italia festival in which he said that talent has already been coalescing around the project, including himself, Keith Carradine and Treat Williams. “It’s a movie that contains humor, lots of action, but also a great plot,” Nero said. Ain’t It Cool News picked up on the news and added some intriguing details — most intriguingly that Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar for his turn as a cold-blooded Nazi in “Basterds,” would also star in the flick. According to AICN, the script is not based on any existing material but is an original script and will potentially begin production in Spain and Italy later this year. Lady Gaga ‘Loves’ ‘Born This Way’ Video, Laurieann Gibson Says

‘She’s very proud of it,’ Gaga’s creative director reveals to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Fans have weighed in on Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video, but how does Mother Monster herself feel about her latest entry into the world of music videos? The video’s creative director and Gaga’s choreographer, Laurieann Gibson, stopped by MTV News on Monday, the same day the Nick Knight-directed clip dropped, and she opened up about Gaga’s reaction to seeing the trippy “Born This Way” . “She loves it! She loves it so much and she’s so happy,” Gibson told us. “She loves it. She watches it all the time. Every time I walk in the dressing room [she says], ‘Ah! Look!’ She’s very proud of it.” Gibson shares that excitement and she said she’s pleased that Gaga and her team are spreading their message of love and acceptance. “I’m happy for her because she’s so fearless,” Gibson explained. “And she works so hard and, for me, those types of artists don’t come around that often.” Those sentiments were mirrored by one of Gaga’s producers, Fernando Garibay , who worked on many of the songs on the upcoming Born This Way. Garibay told us he thinks the video reflects the song’s feel-good message. “Well, I’ve seen pieces. We were privy to watching her make the video and stuff, and as we were watching her do the choreography and everything, we were just blown away, of course,” he said. “It’s amazing. Her talent, I mean, she’s so talented, but in combining the imagery, the dance and how it’s expressed with the song is truly amazing. … I’m still blown away by it. I saw it this morning and I was like, ‘Wow.’ ” What do you think of “Born This Way”? Let us know in the comments! Collaborators Laurieann Gibson and Fernando Garibay discuss new clip. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video is a dark sci-fi thriller about birthing a new race of non-judgmental people. Gaga’s Little Monsters have been consuming the Nick Knight-directed, Laurieann Gibson and Haus co-created clip at epic proportions. The visual spectacle is part fashion shoot, part alien horror flick, and all Gaga. MTV News rounded up some of Mother Monster’s collaborators — her choreographer (Gibson) and Born This Way musical director Fernando Garibay — to talk about the meaning behind the visuals. “This is the first statement and the opening statement of this Born This Way album,” Garibay explained. “When she played it for me, it took me a while to find out the visual interpretation that I could give back to her. And so I woke up one night and I got it, and I said, ‘I got it: We have to birth a new race,’ ” Gibson recalled. “From the gate, Gaga was like, ‘I want Nick Knight for this video. I want a visual.’ She was always birthing something visual in her head, and Nick Knight is just, well, he’s prolific but he’s so genius.” The video, complete with its messages about acceptance and love, fit with the theme of the song. “To write, particularly a dance record, I think dance records are the most hardest songs to write,” Garibay explained. “But to write a statement within a hit record, I think is the holy grail, and I think she was able to do it this time.” Gibson recalls having to work with Gaga on the dancing in the video. “It took two days, and when Gaga was making the album, she wanted it to be in New York. We shot the video in Brooklyn over two days. We had to hide the location,” she said. “To get her to be a better dancer, it’s just a process of getting it out of her and getting her confident. So I just told the story of the record. There’s lots of pushing and birthing. There’s lots of punching the adversity. It’s very symbolic.” “We were just blown away, of course,” Garibay said of seeing the video be made from beginning to end. “It’s amazing. Her talent, I mean, she’s so talented, but in combining the imagery, the dance and how it’s expressed with the song is truly amazing … It’s of cultural relevance, and hopefully helps people that are an outcast, bullied. Hopefully makes people aware that it’s OK to be yourself.” Gibson admitted there was one main goal with this video: “It was about pushing the bar of what a music video should be and can be,” she said. “It’s a different time; it’s a different era; there are no limits. It is a viral message. I think that there’s something in there for everyone, and that’s what’s so amazing about the video and so specific about the message.” Give us your review of the “Born This Way” video in the comments below! Gaga will also walk in the Mugler show in Paris on Wednesday as latest Born This Way track premieres. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage Lady Gaga and Mugler creative director Nicola Formichetti know a good thing when they see it. That’s probably why they are always collaborating. Formichetti is Gaga’s stylist, and Gaga has been acting as musical director for Mugler’s fashion shows. On Wednesday, Formichetti will debut his women’s wear collection in Paris, and Gaga will debut a new song . She also revealed on Twitter she will be walking in the show. “I’m making my debut as a runway model, walking in the MUGLER PARIS FASHIONSHOW 3/2,” she shared, revealing what song she was set to debut at the show. “I directed the show music, previewing Government Hooker.” For those hoping to catch the appearance and the song, the show will stream live at 3 p.m. ET. Lady Gaga Producer Calls ‘Judas’ Playful With A ‘Serious Message’

‘It’s about sometimes not choosing the right choice,’ says Fernando Garibay, who has heard second Born This Way single. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga (file) Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Lady Gaga fans are still reveling in the eye candy that is her “Born This Way” video , which dropped on Monday. But they’re also eager to hear more songs off the May album release of the same name, and that includes her second single, “Judas.” Fernando Garibay, who co-produced many of the tracks on Born This Way, stopped by MTV News a few hours after the video debuted and dished what the second club banger from the album will sound like. “Judas is produced by RedOne and Gaga, obviously, and it’s a statement about, again I can’t speak for her, but what I gather is it’s about sometimes not choosing the right choice,” he teased, adding, “But you can’t deny that the choice is not a part of you and who you are.” Like “Born This Way,” “Judas” will have fans dancing. And while “Born This Way” harks back to the club tracks of the ’90s, Garibay explained that “Judas” is a more traditional Gaga tune. ” ‘Judas’ is a dance song, definitely,” he said. “I think ‘Judas’ in the traditional RedOne/Gaga vein. It’s great because it’s a serious message, it’s a little playful, but still serious, but still somehow you wind up dancing to it. That’s what’s great about her music. You know, like, my favorite songs of all time, dance songs, ‘Billie Jean,’ is a story you wouldn’t think of singing but then you wind up dancing and singing the lyrics. I think that’s the holy grail of music for me, which is dance.” Gaga has commented on the track in radio interviews, sharing what inspired the song. “It’s about always falling in love with the wrong man over and over again,” she said recently. ” ‘Judas’ is a very, very dark song. It’s rad.” RedOne has also been keeping fans on their toes about the song, saying, “It’s gonna shock. You’re gonna be surprised and wanna go crazy.” Are you excited to hear Lady Gaga’s next single, “Judas”? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Video Premieres

Oscar Night Gets Mixed Reviews From Celebrities

At the Vanity Fair party, Stewie Griffin, Russell Brand, Jimmy Kimmel and others weigh in on their favorite moments. By Kara Warner Russell Brand at the 2011 Academy Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images After weeks of buildup, not-so-subtle campaigns by major studios, prognosticating by critics and award season pundits, etc, the 2011 class of Oscar winners were announced on Sunday night in a predictably lengthy and star-studded telecast. While the big stories of the night always revolve around who/what won (answer: “The King’s Speech,” Natalie Portman , Colin Firth, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo ), when MTV News hit up the extra-exclusive hot-ticket post-Oscar Vanity Fair bash, we found there was an equal amount of buzz about the performances of first-time hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco , as well as reactions to the overall show itself. And the reviews of which were decidedly mixed. “It was great!” “Glee” star Jane Lynch exclaimed. “I loved the opening number and thought James and Anne played off each other well.” “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane’s review, which we asked him to deliver in character Stewie Griffin wasn’t quite as rosy. “Let’s see, I was disappointed that Hugh Jackman didn’t sing that song,” MacFarlane said in Stewie’s haughty faux-British accent, recalling the moment in the show when Hathaway sang a song blaming Jackman for bailing on a supposed duet. “That was dreadful that he backed out on that poor girl like that. What a wicked man. “Was that was what was supposed to happen? Was that for real? ” MacFarlane continued, speaking as himself. “There was a lot of really uncomfortable moments, like things were kind of half-formed, you know?” Awkward-moment master Russell Brand , who presented the award for best foreign language film with his “Arthur” co-star Helen Mirren, didn’t seem to notice anything uncomfortable. “It was wonderful,” he said of the show. “I’m happy that ‘The King’s Speech’ did well.” When asked what he thought were the funniest moments, whether intentional or not, Brand pleaded the fifth. “I don’t know. I don’t judge other people because I’m spiritual,” he quipped. On the other hand, Jimmy Kimmel, who readily admitted that he prefers his awards shows full of weird moments or unplanned disasters, had no problem passing judgment on the 83rd annual telecast. “I think Kirk Douglas was funny,” he said, speaking of the 94-year-old actor’s charming, but slightly drawn-out, presentation of the Best Supporting Actress trophy. “I guarantee he planned to do that.” Kimmel’s pick for unintentional funny moment went to Best Supporting Actress winner Melissa Leo dropping an F-bomb mid-acceptance speech before taking Douglas’ cane from him to steady herself as they walked away from the podium.
