Lady Gaga’s Born This Way: What We Know So Far

MTV News rounds up what we know about the songs on the May release. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Paul Warner/WireImage With months to go until we can get our hands on Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, the pop star has been slowing leaking details about the vibe of the May 23 release. Fans have already heard the first single of the same name, and in several recent interviews Gaga has given out a few facts about the songs that fans will hear on the highly anticipated release. While we wait for more, here’s a recap of what we know so far. In the latest issue of Vogue, Gaga revealed that the album’s next single is “Judas,” which producer RedOne has described as shocking. “The melody sounds like it was written for the Ronettes,” the Vogue writer comments. “But it is set to a sledgehammering dance beat and is about falling in love with backstabbing men of the biblical variety.” On Tuesday morning, Gaga confirmed to Carson Daly on Amp Radio that “Judas” will be the second single. “It’s about always falling in love with the wrong man over and over again,” she said. ” ‘Judas’ is a very very dark song. It’s rad.” She also told Vogue about another track on the record, “Americano,” describing it as “a big mariachi techno-house record, where I am singing about immigration law and gay marriage and all sorts of things that have to do with disenfranchised communities in America. … It sounds like a pop record, but when I sing it, I see Edith Piaf in a spotlight with an old microphone.” When Gaga called into Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Tuesday, she described the song “Government Hooker,” which is “one of my favorites” and “has more of a hip-hop beat,” she told Seacrest. “We double-timed the beat. It’s a super fast, really hard record, and the lyrics are really filthy. It’s also empowering, but more in the direction of sexual female empowerment.” On Seacrest, she teased the lyrics to another song, “Hair.” On it she sings, “This is my prayer that I’ll die living just as free as my hair.” “It’s really up-tempo. It’s a club record, but has a Bruce Springsteen vibe,” she explained. “It’s really interesting because it’s putting sax on a huge dance record.” She talked about “Hair” again when she visited New York radio station Z-100 . “Some of those themes are explored more on this album. To put my money where my mouth is [regarding themes of empowerment on this song and album].” She went on to describe the entire album as “eccentric” during the chat. Before we can hear anything new from Gaga, she did also reveal one new detail to Daly about the forthcoming video for “Born This Way,” which will be about “the birth of a new race within the race of humanity. The birth of a new race that doesn’t bear any prejudices. “I think the most important thing is that I continue to grow, and I knew when I put ‘BTW’ it would be a transitional moment, because it doesn’t sound like [my previous singles,” she said, adding that it is the “marijuana” to the “heroin” of the album and that it is a much lighter song than “Judas.” And for those who can’t wait, she had this to share while on Z-100, “I’m gonna be releasing about two to three songs before the album comes out on iTunes.” Related Videos Lady Gaga’s Grammy Night

Kanye West Gets Dirty On Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ Remix

In brand-new remix of the single, West promises ‘alien sex.’ By James Montgomery Kanye West and Katy Perry Photo: EMI On her new single “E.T.,” Katy Perry coos about an extraterrestrial lover with cosmic kisses (and, apparently, lasers) who transports her to otherworldly levels of pleasure. So it’s somewhat fitting that, on a brand-new remix of the song, Kanye West contributes a pair of galactically suggestive verses. The reworked version of the song — which began making the rounds Wednesday (February 16) — features West proclaiming, “I got a dirty mind/ I got filthy ways” and boasting “They callin’ me an alien/ A big-headed astronaut/ Maybe it’s because your boy Yeezy gets ass a lot.” Indeed. West also expresses his desire to “bathe … in your milky way,” and later in the remix, he claims to “know a bar out in Mars where they driving spaceships instead of cars.” Then, he drops the real piece-de-r

Kanye West Joins Katy Perry On ‘E.T.’

Fourth Teenage Dream single to be released this week. By Jocelyn Vena Kanye West and Katy Perry Photo: EMI In her next single from Teenage Dream, “E.T.,” Katy Perry sings about falling in love with an alien to a spacey dance track. And unlike in the version on the album, the radio version features the extraterrestrial stylings of Kanye West. The rapper not only makes a cameo on the song, but he will also appear in the video alongside the California Gurl. The video was shot by “The Runaways” director Floria Sigismondi , who is known for putting her dark, feminine spin on clips for artists like Christina Aguilera, Marilyn Manson and the White Stripes. Little else is known about West’s contribution to the song and the video, but in a photo released by Perry’s label, Kanye appears in regular street clothes while Perry looks like perhaps she’s playing the alien character she sings about in the song — complete with pastel-colored makeup and giant braided headpiece. In fact, the look harks back to some of the costumes former Sigismondi collaborator Bj

Justin Bieber Goes Back In Time For Grammy Performance

Bieber starts performance with ‘Baby’ and footage from ‘Never Say Never,’ with mentor Usher by his side. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs during the Grammy Awards on Sunday Photo: The Recording Academy/CBS When Eva Longoria hit the Grammy stage to introduce Justin Bieber ‘s performance, she reminded the world that only a few years ago, Bieber was hustling just to get his music heard. She then introduced a clip from his just-released movie, “Never Say Never,” that gave an inside look at a 2007 meeting between Bieber and his mentor, Usher, during which Bieber sang for him. As the clip played out, Bieber sat on the stage, an acoustic guitar on his lap, and Usher came out to chat with the star. “Yeah, that was four years ago. That’s how it started,” Usher said. “You told me if it was meant to be, we would meet again,” a leather-clad Bieber responded when Usher explained that he didn’t listen to him sing until their second encounter. “That’s right, and now it’s your time,” Usher said, before Bieber, who was singing in a much lower octave than fans are used to, started playing an acoustic version of “Baby.” Check out photos of Justin Bieber and all the 2011 Grammy performances . Soon ninjas playing drums came down the aisles pounding out the beat to “Never Say Never” as Bieber was joined onstage by acrobats. Jaden Smith then popped up from the stage and rapped his part of the song. When Smith left the stage, Usher came on, singing a bit of “OMG,” wearing sleek military-type garb surrounded by similarly attired dancers performing pop-and-lock moves. Justin then joined him toward the end of the song to display some of his own dancing skills, and sang the final bars of the song with his mentor. “I am going to [perform and] I’m gonna have some surprises there,” Bieber recently told MTV News about the performance. “We got some other performers that are going to be there with me, Jaden and Usher, so I’m really excited about it. Jaden’s cool. He’s gonna kick it. He’s gonna kill it. I’m excited.” Usher also gave us a preview the big performance, noting that it was just about having a good time. “The performance will be fun,” Usher explained. “We want to get up there and just do what we do. Be comfortable, and have a great time. … This is kind of a crossover for Justin. Having performed on so many different stages, this is the way that I wanted him to be seen and an opportunity to show the industry — a lot of the industry, that didn’t believe [in him] — some of his other talents. He’s going to play acoustically, and also, we’ll get down a little bit.” For Grammy Awards winners list, analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News during the big show and beyond. Travis Barker Talks Partnership With Lil Wayne On New Solo Single

Barker says his collaboration with Weezy on ‘Can a Drummer Get Some?’ began when they performed together at last year’s Grammys. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Travis Barker Photo: Getty Images NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — On Friday, with the 53rd Grammy Awards less than 48 hours away, Travis Barker invited MTV News up to his studio to play us a handful of tracks from his long-delayed though finally completed solo album, Give the Drummer Some , which hits stores on March 15. Judging from what we heard, there’s no shortage of hard-hitting, genre-blurring jams on the record, though a standout is “Can a Drummer Get Some?” The track, which is the album’s proper first single, features verses from Rick Ross, Game, Swizz Beatz and, of course, Lil Wayne. The Blink-182 stickman let it slip that he’s planning on filming a video for the song with all the talent present as early as next week. And it’s fitting that, on practically the eve of the Grammys, he’s talking about the song because, in a lot of ways, its roots stretch all the way back to last year’s Grammy telecast, when Barker joined Weezy, Eminem and Drake onstage for a performance of “Forever” “At the Grammys, we were at soundcheck, we were messing around before we even bust into the song,” Barker recalled. “Freestyling, just busting beats, it’s always a good time.” And that crackling, live energy is more than present on “Can a Drummer,” a song that Barker is deeply attached to for a lot of reasons. “I painted that one up in my head — that’s the first song I wrote for my album. I pieced that one together, I knew exactly how I wanted it,” he explained. “I [had] played on something for Young Money — they wanted me to do a remix, and I was like, ‘Cool.’ I had seen Wayne in L.A., and I had talked to him about a verse, so [we were like] ‘let’s just do [an] even trade.’ So, like a month later, I got my verse from Wayne. Man, everything he said, he just killed it. I would get mixtapes and I’d be listening to it in the car, like blaring it, and I’d hear him say my name or something, and I’d be like, ‘Lil Wayne just said my name, this is a trip!’ Because I’m a fan.” And as a fan, Barker is a lot like the rest of us. He’s eternally marveling at how far Wayne has come — a voyage that started more than 10 years ago, continued though their 2010 Grammy performance and now is featured prominently on “Can a Drummer Get Some?” “I love what Wayne’s done, how he’s progressed,” Barker laughed. “I remember, it must’ve been 1999 or 2000, and we’re in Las Vegas, at the Joint, and Cash Money is performing, and Blink’s performing — so it’s just a trip because I grew up on him too. I saw him go from that through his whole career, all his albums — it’s just crazy.” Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. The debate rages on whether Lady Gaga intentionally lifted melodies from Madonna’s “Express Yourself” for her new lead single “Born This Way”, or if it was just divine intervention guiding Gaga through the songwriting process.
