Trey Songz, Nicki Minaj Recall Collaborating For ‘Bottoms Up’

The stars chat on Ustream about making the track, promising a video and live performances together soon. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj recently dropped the rollicking, bass-heavy collaboration “Bottoms Up” and the stars wasted no time hitting the web to chat about how the duo hooked up. Hours after sites posted the song from Songz’ upcoming Passion, Pain & Pleasure album, the singer spoke directly to fans on Tuesday from his Ustream page about the track. After conferencing in Minaj, who was at work in the studio, they broke down the whirlwind creation of the song. “I’m in L.A. for BET [Awards] weekend, I’m working on a couple records, and I do this song called ‘Red Lipstick,’ and then I do ‘Bottoms Up’ the next day,” Trey recalled of his recording session. “I hit Nicki and I’m like, ‘Man, I’ve got these two incredible records, I think one of them is gonna be my first single, and I need you to do it. Can you come this weekend? Can you come down?’ “I stayed a couple extra days and she came through,” he said. “Two, three days later I got a verse back that was just stupid.” Songz then addressed the MC directly and said, “I fell in love with you. When I heard the verse, I was like, ‘Oh my s—, I love her. She killed it.’ ” Minaj chimed in and noted that fans had been waiting for the stars to team up. “Every day, people say, ‘When you gonna collaborate with Trey?’ For some strange reason they wanted to see that collaboration,” Minaj said. “So, when you hit me, I was very excited. I just thought, ‘This is our time.’ ” While breaking down her side of the recording process, Minaj revealed that she paid special attention to her verse. “I lived with it,” she explained. “I kept on hitting you like, ‘I’mma have it done today.’ I think I did live with it for, like, three days because I was changing it up, I couldn’t get it. But then, all of a sudden, something just hit me.” Her animated delivery brings boatloads of swagger to the track, but Minaj said she had some doubts at first, admitting that she almost dropped a line where she mimics the loopy, breathy speech of Anna Nicole Smith. “I was gonna take that part out because I was like, ‘Trey is gonna think I’m crazy,’ ” she said. But in the end, Minaj was cool with how the verse came together. “I’m just happy that I was able to do something that kinda kept that energy up,” enthused the MC, who also attributed her juiced-up flow to her rap alter ego, Roman Zolanski. “Roman is very spastic. Roman is crazy and Roman is weird and Roman doesn’t care. … The person on [DJ Khaled’s] ‘All I Do Is Win’ remix, that’s Nicki, and the person on ‘Bottoms Up,’ that’s Roman.” The pair also discussed shooting the song’s accompanying video, for which Songz said he had already drafted a treatment and roped in video director Anthony Mandler. And the duo also chatted about hitting the stage together sometime soon. “I can’t wait ’til the first time we perform it somewhere,” Songz said. “It’s gotta be a big moment,” Minaj insisted. Songz agreed: “Yeah, it’s gonna be a big moment.” What do you think of Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj’s “Bottoms Up”? Share your reviews in the comments. ‘If I Had a Hammer’: WaPo Hippie Columnist Would Like to Pummel GOP Folk Singer

Washington Post Magazine humorist Gene Weingarten reacted badly in his Sunday column to the discovery that folk singer Arlo Guthrie is now a registered Republican: “By becoming a Republican, Arlo Guthrie has shredded the last remnants of my faith that our hippie principles had any lasting meaning. How can he do this to us? I’m a peaceable man, but if I had a hammer…” Guthrie didn’t become one of those warmongering neocons. He endorsed Ron Paul for president in early 2008. But Weingarten began with his marijuana-baked enthusiasm for hippiedom, which he clearly still loves dearly: Like many middle-age people, I wear more than one hat. I’m a husband, a father, a journalist, a role model to a generation of idealistic young Americans, etc. But one of my favorite hats, the floppy felt one that still smells faintly of the sweet smoke of a controlled substance, is “former hippie.” We children of the ’60s tenaciously hold on to this self-image, even though our mirrors tell us that in terms of sheer hipness, we look more like Arlen Specter than Arlo Guthrie. Weingarten — who is not simply a yuk-yuk man, but a man who used to edit the Post’s influential Style section — discovered that Arlo Guthrie’s “iconic, self-deprecating, darkly comic, anti-war counterculture masterpiece” of a song “Alice’s Restaurant” didn’t make complete sense as nonfiction. The song no longer seemed to “speak truth to power.” So he called Guthrie up: Me: So, you were arrested for illegally dumping a half-ton of garbage that you scooped up from the floor of Alice’s home, and took away to dispose of as a favor, right? Arlo: Right. Me: And you were nailed by the fuzz because Officer Obie found your name on an envelope in that half-ton pile of garbage and phoned you. And in the funniest line of the song, you solemnly admitted to Officer Obie that you had put that envelope under that half-ton of garbage, right? Arlo: Right. Me: Why was your name in the garbage from Alice’s restaurant? Wasn’t that all Alice’s garbage? Arlo: In 40 years, no one ever asked me that. Me: Well, someone is asking now. Arlo: Bravo. I will hate you forever for this. Me: [Pause] Arlo: Okay, we have to attribute that line to creative license. Obie actually found a paper with Ray’s name — Ray was Alice’s husband — and Ray directed them to me. But it worked better in the song the other way. Me: So, no biggie? A misstatement is okay because it “worked better”? Guthrie didn’t answer, but Weingarten compared his worship of Guthrie’s “counterculture masterpiece” to the miracles of Jesus: Me: I don’t want to overstate my disillusionment here. But this is like hearing Jesus say, “Okay, I didn’t turn the water into wine, exactly. Actually, I just added some Kool-Aid powder and turned it into a nice, refreshing beverage.” Weingarten learned Guthrie’s party affiliation by further complaining: “Did you learn your ethics from your dad [socialist folk singer Woody Guthrie]? Might it be that this land was really made for him and just a few of his cronies?” Arlo responded: “You know, it’s possible. I’ve heard that song sung at Republican conventions.” This means that Arlo Guthrie is actually more light-hearted about his politics than the humor writer is.

Lady Gaga Writhes Around In The Rain For ‘Today’ Show

Gaga performs a jazz standard, hits and her newest tune, ‘You and I,’ in Rockefeller Center. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga performs on the “Today” show Friday Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images According to the hosts of the “Today” show, 18,000 to 20,000 people showed up to see Lady Gaga perform on Friday morning (July 9). And even after waiting for hours in the heat, which was finally relieved by rain during the set, the crowd didn’t seem disappointed by what their Mother Monster brought them. Gaga jazzed up Rockefeller Plaza in a sequined, all-white suit and a bra complete with sparkly crosses. She began her set with the standard “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and though she was accompanied by a full band, backup singers and dancers, the cover still displayed Gaga’s vocal abilities. She then seamlessly segued into “Bad Romance.” Sitting at her piano, Gaga said told Meredith Viera hasn’t gotten accustomed to being famous yet. “I haven’t [gotten used to it], but I love and cherish my fans so much,” she said. “I just want to say a big thank you to all of the television and radio and the underground clubs and the gay community for supporting me for the past three years. … There’s certainly things that are difficult to deal with, but the kind of fame that I cherish is the relationship I have with my fans.” When introducing her newest song, she explained the inspiration behind it. ” ‘You and I’ was written about the most important person that I’ve ever met and all my friends downtown, Lady Starlight and Brian, who’s here today playing trumpet, and all my friends, they’re so wonderful.” And though the song is more lo-fi than many of her tunes, she kept it Gaga by donning a pair of disco-ball sunglasses. After the commercial break, Gaga came out wearing a black suit and bra to sing her latest hit, “Alejandro.” In the middle of the song, she asked the crowd to “put their hands up for your gay pride.” She later shouted, “Hands up, little monsters. I love New York.” In the pouring rain, completely soaked, Gaga told the skies to “let it rain” as she belted out the last few notes of her song “Teeth.” She then crossed herself and took a bow with her backup dancers by her side. And with that Gaga ended her epic “Today Show” performance. In the hours leading up to her appearance, Gaga tweeted a message to the fans who camped out before the show. “My little monster sweeties are already camped outside today show!” she wrote. “I love u! Will be sending u pizza and water all day! And a surprise 2moro! Thousands of precious lil monsters are sleeping in street outside Today Show. May NY watchover u, + may u sleep smiling under the stars. Amen.” Did you catch Gaga on “Today”? What did you think of her performance? Tell us in the comments! Big Boi Says Scott Storch Collabo Happened ‘By Chance’

‘I was just like, ‘Boy, give it to me,’ ‘ Big recalls of hearing producer’s funky ‘Shutterbugg’ for the first time. By Jayson Rodriguez Big Boi Photo: MTV News Big Boi’s “Shutterbugg” not only proved to be the breakout single the Atlanta MC needed to get his long-delayed Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty a release date, but the slinky number also gives Scott Storch his first legitimate hit in nearly four years. The Grammy-winning producer once provided artists with chart-toppers on a regular basis, but a string of troubles sidelined him in recent years. The Outkast rapper, however, told MTV News he wasn’t aware of Storch’s personal problems. A friend, Big Boi said, simply relayed a message from the producer saying he had a record for him. “I was finishing the song ‘Sumethin’s Gotta Give,’ with Mary J. Blige. We was at Lenny Kravitz’s studio, and my homeboy, who manages Yelawolf right now, was like, ‘Scott Storch is looking for you. He said he got a beat he been sitting on for two years that got your name written all over it,’ ” Big Boi recalled. “We finished the song with Mary, [Storch] came and picked us up — drop-top Phantom — drove us to his house, went in his house, went in his studio. “This man played a song at the loudest volume I heard a song played in my life,” Big laughed. “The first song he played was “Shutterbugg.” Man, it came on, I was just like, ‘Boy, give it to me.’ Took the beat, went to Atlanta, brought my band in, keyboard and guitar players, we laid a couple layers of funk on top of it. [Producer] Bosko came in and put the ‘talkbox’ on it, made it all the way funky.” Critics have singled out the track as a favorite and showered praise on the veteran lyricist’s proper solo debut. And the “Shutterbugg” video is as colorful as the track, with an array of images bursting through the clip. And although Big Boi tapping Storch for “Shutterbugg” has helped the Miami producer continue his comeback, for the rapper, it was just a matter of good timing. “Certain things happen by chance,” Big said. “I didn’t plan on working with Scott Storch, but it happened and he was jamming.” Do you think Big Boi and Scott Storch should work on more material together? Kris Allen Explains ‘Weird’ Video Treatment For ‘The Truth’

‘There is a concept, kind of,’ former American Idol says of the video for his next song. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: MTV News Kris Allen admits that when fans listen to his duet with Train frontman Pat Monahan, “The Truth,” it may come off as some sort of romantic duet. But he explained that there’s another way of looking at it. And he hopes that when the video is shot, that other, less romantic take on the song is made clear. “There is a concept, kind of. I got sent a video treatment by the same guy who did ‘Live Like We’re Dying’ [director Marco Puig] and it sounded interesting,” Allen recently told MTV News. “So I think it’s gonna happen. He’s really creative. I really like him [and] it’s a really weird treatment. In some way [Pat will be in the video], yes. The way that he was gonna be involved was not [romantic]. It kind of made sense.” Despite what anyone might think of the song’s meaning, Allen says the fans have been liking it. “We played it Atlanta the other night and people were freaking out about it. I think people really enjoy it,” he explained, adding that the jury on Allen and Monahan is still out about the song’s message. For instance, when the guys sing “I still keep your photographs/ I remember how we used to laugh/ I can keep on losing sleep/ If you’re OK with being torn in half,” could they be singing about each other? “We were talking about this other day. I think it’s more of maybe an experience thing or maybe we have dated the same girl and she did the same thing to both of us and now we’re in the broken boyfriend/girlfriend club,” he said. And if fans are hoping for some new music from Allen sometime soon, Allen says he’s working on it. “I am, you know, a little bit now,” he revealed. “We’re in the mode and we have a schedule. There’s a couple things out there. I’m excited about it. I would love to bring [the band to the recording sessions] if they would like to. That would be really cool.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Kris Allen Related Photos MTV.com Exclusive: Kris Allen Related Artists Kris Allen

Enrique Iglesias Says Duet With ‘The Situation’ Would Be ‘Fun’

‘A lot of it comes down to the song,’ the singer says of collaborating with the ‘Jersey Shore’ star. By Mawuse Ziegbe Enrique Iglesias in his “I Like It” music video Photo: Interscope It appears Enrique Iglesias and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino have really hit it off. After the cast of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” worked their fist-pumping skills in Iglesias’ video for “I Like It” (also featuring Pitbull), the Latin hitaker says he’d totally be open to a collaboration with the ab-tastic “Shore” star. “I wouldn’t mind it,” Iglesias told E! Online about teaming with the Situation for a track. Sorrentino has been branching out from his gym, tanning and laundry duties, dropping a Baltimore club-influenced single called “The Situation Rap,” replete with wheezing alarms and Fatman Scoop’s amped-up hollers. Iglesias explained that a potential collaboration hinged on the type of track they came up with, but conceded that hooking up with Sorrentino would be a blast. “I mean, a lot of it comes down to the song,” Iglesias said. “But it would be fun!” And the “Jersey Shore” crew definitely brings the rowdiness to Iglesias’ “I Like It” video. The gelled-up, overly tanned collective concocts madcap ways to sneak into an Enrique concert, including seducing security guards and posing as roadies. The clip follows the reality TV partiers as they lead the crowd in a rousing round of fist-pumping, with Pauly D jumping on the wheels of steel and the Sitch, of course, whipping off his shirt. While shooting the video, Snooki told MTV News that “I Like It” captures the crew’s rambunctious spirit. “When everybody sees this music video, they’re pretty much gonna realize that we’re a bunch of nut jobs, just trying to crash Enrique’s concert.” For his part, Iglesias was down for the debauchery. “Let’s go out there and have some fun,” the pop star told MTV News. “It’s the kids from the ‘Jersey Shore.’ What else would you ask for?” Iglesias also told E! that the “Shore” kids may bring the craziness onscreen but behind the scenes, the crew kept the controversy to a minimum. “You watch the show and you see all this drama and all these fights and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, all of this is going to be going on during the video!’ It wasn’t like that at all,” Iglesias said. “Once I got to hang out with them, the guys were so nice and I’m actually a big fan now.” Even if a Situation-Iglesias collabo doesn’t happen, fans can still bump some Jersey-approved tunes with the Jersey Shore Soundtrack, set for a July 20 release. The album includes “I Like It,” as well as party-starting tracks by Akon, Lil Jon, LMFAO, and Taio Cruz. The “Jersey Shore” season-one uncensored DVD will be available the same day. Would you like to see an Enrique/Situation collaboration? Tell us in the comments! Don’t miss the Jersey Shore Soundtrack, available July 20. Season two of “Jersey Shore” premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there! Ne-Yo’s ‘Beautiful Monster’ Video: Watch A Sneak Peek!

Black-leather-clad dancers, sexy ladies take over nightclub in first look at clip for synth-heavy track. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Victor Barreiro Ne-Yo on the set of his music video for “Beautiful Monster” Photo: MTV News Father-to-be Ne-Yo filmed the video for his new single, “Beautiful Monster,” earlier this week in Los Angeles and the Grammy-winning singer said the clip is just the first in a visual story he plans to tell on his next album. ” ‘Beautiful Monster,’ in a nutshell, represents the love interest/ archnemesis in the story [of] Libra Scale, which the entire album is based off of,” the singer told MTV News. “She’s a monster, beautiful monster/ Beautiful monster, but I don’t mind,” he sings on the song’s chorus. “And I need her, said I need her/ Beautiful monster, but I don’t mind/ No, I don’t mind.” The synth-heavy number is the lead offering from Ne-Yo’s upcoming set , one he promised us earlier this year would be “a little bit different.” And the sound of “Beautiful Monster” is certainly long on overseas influences. When it came time to shoot a clip for the song, Ne-Yo admitted he usually accepts the treatments his directors come up with. But this time, the Def Jam star stretched, crafting a concept on his own, a career first. Going forward, the singer explained, each video will connect to the overall story he wants to tell through his fourth solo LP, the follow-up to 2008’s Year of the Gentleman. ” ‘Beautiful Monster’ is one piece of a very long and intricate story,” Ne-Yo revealed. “When you see the first video, make sure that you’re paying attention because all of the videos tell a story. So pay attention — you don’t want to miss nothing.” What did you think of the “Beautiful Monster” sneak peek? Let us know, and we might air your comments Friday night on MTV!

What Will B.o.B’s Next Hit Be?

The star says ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ is the song fans have ’embraced naturally’ By Mawuse Ziegbe with reporting by Kelly Marino B.o.B Photo: MTV News B.o.B. has had a breakout year with his chart-topping debut B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray , which has yielded the hits “Nothin’ On You” and the Hayley Williams-assisted “Airplanes” . The ATL star already has a couple of scorchers under his belt, but he’s still deciding between two other cuts from Bobby Ray for his next single. The MC said it’s a tossup between “Magic” and “Don’t Let Me Fall.” “I think ‘Magic’ is one where, in terms of the pop crowd, it’ll really be the hit, the record of choice,” B.o.B. told MTV News Sunday on the 2010 BET Awards’ red carpet, flanked by fellow Grand Hustle artist Ricco Barrino. “Magic” may have pop appeal and a feature from Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, but the MC said that fans have already connected with “Don’t Let Me Fall.” “I think ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ is the song that people just kinda embrace naturally. It doesn’t even have to be pushed or on the radio,” B.o.B said, adding that the crowd response for “Don’t Let Me Fall” parallels his earlier hits. “When I perform and do shows, people sing ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ just as much as ‘Nothin’ On You’ and ‘Airplanes.’ ” The Atlanta MC didn’t have much time to think it over, since he then went on to wow the audience with his performance at the 2010 BET Awards . The rookie rapper teamed up with venerable hip-hop superstar, Eminem — who also makes an appearance on Bobby Ray — and recruited R&B songstress Keyshia Cole to step in for Hayley Williams for a performance of “Airplanes, Part II.” What do you think B.o.B’s next single should be? John Legend, The Roots Talk Levi’s Pioneer Recording Sessions

Collaborators covered soul song ‘Our Generation,’ after hearing it sampled on classic ’90s Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth track. By Steven Roberts John Legend Photo: MTV News Ernie Hines probably isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think of soul singers. But the Mississippi singer/guitarist’s “Our Generation” was John Legend and the Roots’ choice when it was their turn to cover a song for the Levi’s Pioneer Sessions project. Legend and the Roots, who were already working on an album of covers, Wake Up!, were quick to come onboard when Levi’s called. Legend acknowledged the song was relatively obscure, but said he thought fans would recognize it from a famous hip-hop sample. ” ‘Straighten It Out’ [by] Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth was an important hip-hop record and it sampled ‘Our Generation,’ ” Legend said. The R&B crooner went on to explain that as he and the Philly band were putting his album together, they wanted a sound that was both hip-hop and soul. “A lot of what we did was try to bring songs that have been sampled or should be sampled or sample-able to make the album,” Legend continued. “It just makes sense to do the song [for Levi’s].” Covering a song previously sampled on a ’90s rap song — in this case, one off the hip-hop duo’s classic 1992 LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother — makes sense for two acts known for playing to more mature audiences, Roots drummer ?uestlove said. “People might not know ‘Our Generation,’ but there’s definitely people in their mid-30s that know Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth ‘Straighten It Out.’ And it will also hit people that knew the original ‘Our Generation,’ that are now 50 years old,” ?uest added. The Levi’s 2010 Revival Recordings series asks musicians to choose songs that were not only influential in their careers but also proved to be part of music history. Legend and the Roots decided to bring MC C.L. Smooth into the booth with them, and they all agree it was worth the effort. The singer said he was excited to collaborate with Smooth, but also the Roots drummer; some interesting, unexpected sounds emerged. “One of the coolest things about working with Ahmir [‘?uestlove’ Thompson] is his encyclopedic knowledge of music,” Legend said. “He just knows a lot of great records. When you’re thinking about putting an album together of songs that were performed [more than] 40 to 50 years ago, he’s one of the best people to talk about that with.” The album Wake Up! is due for a September release, and the Ernie Hines cover is available for free download at the Levi’s Pioneer Sessions website. Does hearing the Roots and John Legend’s Levi’s track make you excited for their upcoming album? Tell us in the comments!
