Drake’s ‘Over’ Video Shows Struggle Between ‘My Past Life And This New Life’

New video shows Drake torn between a wholesome beauty and a seductive dancer. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Drake in his “Over” music video Photo: Universal Motown/ Young Money No more waiting; the video for Drake’s “Over” has finally arrived premiered on Vevo Monday morning (April 12). The clip starts off with Drake, dressed in white, sitting in a room on a bed, reflecting on how his life his now. Images of explosions and time-lapsed cityscapes are projected on him and the wall of the room. From there, he launches into a heavy performance. “This is my first video,” Drake said on the set of “Over” in early March, though he’s made clips for “Successful,” “Best I Ever Had” and some of his guest stints. “I’ve shot a lot of videos before, but this is my first attempt to establish myself as Drake the artist. Shooting the other videos I’ve done has been great. I really don’t care what other people think about them, they were great experiences for me. I’ve learned a lot from them. Today, I’m shooting with somebody I really look up to and respect. I’m shooting with Anthony Mandler. “We talked colors, we talked epic, emotion-evoking visuals,” he added. “The story is actually interesting. The song is so aggressive, and it’s sort of a love story in the video. It has a lot to do with the album [ Thank Me Later ]. The album is about finding love, feeling, ‘Have I sold my soul?’ as far as, ‘Will I ever be able to gain the trust of a woman? Will I only be able to be around the dark, evil women? Will I ever find that pure love?’ Those elements are in the video. I look strong, I feel great, my knee’s feeling great . I’m jumping around, doing all kinds of stuff.” Toward the end of the video, it looks like Drake has to choose between two beautiful women. One, played by Roc Nation singer Rita Ora, looks like a more wholesome girl, while the other lady looks more dangerous as she dances provocatively in the background. “It takes the song to another place,” Drake said of the video last week on the night on the opening night of his Away From Home Tour . “It offers up a whole different look for the song. The song — to a lot of people — is ignorant, it’s club. This video is what I was really thinking about. The song is like a bad dream — but it’s not a bad dream, it’s not a terrible dream. It’s a little evil. The video really reflects that. It’s a struggle between the purities of my past life and what this new life has to offer. Even in the video, you see me looking back and forth between the two and deciding. At the end of the video I don’t necessarily make a decision, but when you get the album, you’ll see what choice I make.” Related Artists Drake

Drake Says ‘Over’ Video ‘Takes The Song To Another Place’

‘It offers up a whole different look for the song,’ MC says of the clip. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News According to Drake, his video for “Over” should be out very soon and the clip shows a choice he had to make in real life. “It captures … it takes the song to another place,” he told MTV News in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, during the opening night of his Away From Home Tour . At the end of the video I don’t necessarily make a decision, but when you get the album, you’ll see what choice I make.” “Over” is early in the Thank Me Later track list, and is part of a story that’s told through the album. “Initially it was a warm-up record,” he added of “Over.” “I love the song. I love the message in the song. It’s funny, because ‘Over’ is the fourth song on the album and it’s the turning point in the album. It’s like, you get three songs of me sort of trying to paint the picture of what the last year has been like for me — trying to fill you in, almost let you into my world as much as I can. ‘Over’ is that moment where you’re almost worried on the album. ‘Is this kid about to … ? What’s happening? Is he changing?’ I wanted that to come out first. I wanted people to be a little nervous. This whole journey could have changed me drastically. Fortunately I’m able to step out of my shoes and reflect on it and give you some great music. ‘Over’ is a great alter-ego moment. It’s the dark side of things and I really wanted that to come out first.” Thank Me Later is in stores June 15. Are you looking forward to the premiere of Drake’s video for “Over”? Drake Talks ‘Miss Me,’ His Thank Me Later Collabo With Lil Wayne

Young Money MC also clarifies the status of the ‘Afrika Bambaataa’ track to Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Sway Calloway Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive The plot thickens when it comes to the record “Afrika Bambaataa.” Weeks ago, before he went to prison, Wayne revealed on his “Nino Brown: The Road To Rikers” DVD that he was shooting a video to a song called “Afrika Bambaataa” for Drake. Everyone speculated that the song in question would be part of Weezy’s contribution to Drizzy’s Thank Me Later album. On Monday in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, before the start of his Away From Home Tour , Drake told us “Afrika Bambaataa” isn’t his record. “That’s actually a Lil Wayne song,” he explained. “I don’t know where that confusion came from. I was just on set that day when he was shooting that video. That’s not even my song. I’m not even on it, to be honest with you. Me and Wayne have a song on my album — a song called ‘Miss Me.’ “It’s a pretty straightforward [song],” he continued. “It’s a song about being away from what you love and hoping that when you’re gone, doing you, somebody out there misses you. It goes for Wayne in his situation and it goes for me in my situation, ’cause I’m on the road for I don’t how long right now.” Drake also revealed that he redid the chorus for Wayne’s song “Single” off of the No Ceilings mixtape. Katie Stevens Makes ‘Let It Be’ Her Own On ‘American Idol’

‘You’re blossoming,’ Kara DioGuardi tells the Connecticut teen during Lennon/McCartney week. By Larry Carroll Katie Stevens performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox It’s one of the most famous songs of all time, and the lyrics are instantly recognizable to anyone from Dallas to Dubai. But Tuesday night (April 6) on “American Idol,” one of the contestants made “Let It Be” her own. Wearing a short pink dress with her hair pulled back, Connecticut’s Katie Stevens broke out of the “Idol” top-nine episode with a somber rendition of the 30-year-old song. Following a thunderous response from the audience — which included her family, holding an “I love my family because they love Katie Stevens” sign — the judges unanimously gushed over Stevens’ heart-tugging vocals. “That was your best performance ever,” Randy Jackson beamed, praising the song that Katie said her father used to play for her in the car. “That was ridiculous.” Ellen DeGeneres, meanwhile, praised her for “changing it just enough without disrespecting the song,” while Kara DioGuardi agreed, saying, “You make the song your own. You’re blossoming.” “It felt, to me, that you were singing it about somebody rather than being robotic,” Simon Cowell agreed. “And that’s a big difference.” Paul McCartney certainly wasn’t being robotic when he recorded “Let It Be” in early 1969 for the release of the same-named album that marked the Beatles’ final effort. Recorded during a period of rapidly increasing acrimony between the members of the world’s greatest rock band, McCartney has said that he was inspired to write the song after a calming dream about his mother Mary — who had died of cancer when he was 14 — during the tense period of his life. Ranked #20 on Rolling Stone ‘s 2004 list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, “Let It Be” reached #1 on the Billboard charts in April 1970. In perhaps the latest great testament to its legacy, “Let It Be” has become an “Idol” favorite: Brooke White performed it in season seven, while Kris Allen put his unique spin on the song during a recent results show. Hayley Williams Calls Cameo With Eminem On B.o.B’s Album ‘Incredible’

‘I’m so proud to be a part of this!’ Paramore frontwoman tells MTV News By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: John Shearer/ Getty Images He may already be Justin Bieber’s favorite rapper , but on his debut album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, Atlanta’s own B.o.B is looking to expand that fanbase even further — to the Warped Tour set. In addition to cameos by the likes of T.I. and Lupe Fiasco, Adventures also features Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo on a track (which isn’t that much of a stretch, considering Rivers is practically a member of Young Money at this point) and, oddly enough, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, who lends her vocals to a pair of songs on the album, one of which also features Eminem. Needless to say, the idea of Hayley and Em sharing vocal duties raised our eyebrows just a bit, which is why we sent an e-mail to the Paramore frontwoman to ask her all about the song and just how she ended up appearing on B.o.B’s record in the first place. “I was given the track a while ago while we were on tour. The guys and I all loved it. They told me I was crazy if I passed it up,” Williams told MTV News. “I liked the part too much anyways, so of course I was down. “I only found out about Eminem getting on the track like a month ago. As if the song couldn’t get any better. He just slays me, he’s such a genius. And I’m a big B.o.B fan. Got everything of his that I’ve been able to get my hands on,” she continued. “Whether our fans know or not, I’m not sure, but [Paramore bassist ] Jeremy [Davis] and I have always been really into hip-hop. It means a lot that I got to collaborate with a hip-hop artist who is from Atlanta. Not far from home. We Southern gals love us some Southern gentlemen.” Williams appears solo on a song called “Airplanes,” and then she’s joined by Eminem on an album-closing reprise, which, appropriately enough, is called “Airplanes (Part II).” But what do the tracks sound like? Well, Williams wouldn’t tell us much, which means Paramore fans are just gonna have to wait until B.o.B’s album drops April 27. “Both versions of the track are incredible, that’s all I’ll say,” she wrote. “I’m so proud to be a part of this!” Are you excited to hear Hayley’s collabos with B.o.B? Usher Says ‘Papers’ Was Recorded Before His Marriage Ended

‘Unfortunately, it did become a reality,’ he says of the Raymond v. Raymond track. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Sway Calloway Usher Photo: MTV News Usher said his hit song “Papers” was a case of life imitating art, not the other way around. Speaking with MTV News last week, the singer talked about the song that kicked off his Raymond v. Raymond LP on the radio earlier this year. “I think people would have immediately alluded to the fact I was talking about my wife when I made that record — and now my ex-wife,” he said. “When the song was recorded, I wasn’t divorced. It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life. Coming in at 6 in the morning and arguing was a reality when you have those type of relationships. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn’t know how realistic it would become. I didn’t know I would become divorced. I did know it spoke on the contrast between trying to balance this world of being married and having this responsibility that’s like a marriage at the same time. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality.” In October, Usher’s ex-wife, Tameka Foster, told People magazine that “Papers” was just “entertainment” and “people shouldn’t take it literally.” “For you, I gave my heart and turned my back against the world/ ‘Cause you were my girl, girl, girl,” Usher sings on the chorus. “I done damn near lost my mama, I done been through so much drama/ I done turned into the man I never thought I’d be/ I’m ready to sign them papers.” The track is produced by Zaytoven and written by Sean Garrett. “Let’s say I wrote a record for Usher three or four months ago where I really didn’t have any idea of what he was going through personally. I work really hard at creating records I feel that’s gonna fit like a glove to an artist,” Garrett explained back in June. “Me and Usher have a close relationship; I tend to sort of assist certain artists in giving them a direction, where I think they need to go in their next move. I felt that was the direction we needed to go. I felt that was the question everyone wanted to know: Was [his relationship] good or was it bad? Was it right? Are you happy or you’re not?” Raymond v. Raymond drops Tuesday. Are you excited for Usher’s new album? Are you surprised that “Papers” was written before Usher’s marriage ended? Let us know in the comments! Sri Lanka denied Akon’s Visa Preceding Protests

Sri Lanka’s government refused to give the R&B artist Akon his visa to be in their country for his up coming concert next month. This is due to the protests from his song which has offended country’s Buddhism. His music video contained inadequately clothed women dancing in front of the statue of Buddha. This is a disgrace to their religion. The music video for Sexy Chic by David Guetta has triggered a lot of disappointments among Buddhist and Akon’s lyrics in the song is not suitable for public articulation according to Sri Lankan government. Maharaja Broadcasting and Television Network, the media sponsor of the planned concert has been flooded with protests and there were even employees who were hurt physically. “Considering the controversial video images, offensive song lyrics and strong protests coming from various cultural, religious groups and organisations in the country, the government was compelled to take this decision,” the government said. As to the side of Akon about the matter, a spokesperson said that they “postponed” the concert and is hoping to settle the issue immediately. “I was not aware that the statue was even on the set of the video until now. I would never set out to offend or desecrate anyone’s religion or religious beliefs,” Akon said in a statement. Concert promoter Lasantha Samarasingheare is hoping that the Sri Lankan government would reconsider because the concert cold somehow boosts the country’s tourism and economy. Justin Bieber Goes Acoustic For MTV.com Performance — Check It Out Here!

The star sings, raps and plays guitar during an intimate live performance. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs live for MTV.com Photo: MTV Justin Bieber ‘s new album My World 2.0 is out on Tuesday (March 23), and he sat down for an exclusive acoustic performance for MTV.com where he played several new tracks as well as a few fan favorites. Bieber not only displayed his vocal abilities, but he also rapped and played guitar. During a performance of “One Less Lonely Girl” off his debut album My World, Bieber played acoustic guitar while belting out the track. For his newer songs like “Never Let You Go” and the Motown-inspired track “U Smile,” Bieber chose to go guitar-less and really showcase his voice. Before his performance of “Baby” he told the intimate crowd, “I don’t know if you guys know this song — it’s called ‘Baby’ and it’s dedicated to Nicole in Minnesota,” before singing the song and then rapping the part usually rapped by Ludacris. He also dedicated the slower track “That Should Be Me” to Alexa in Knoxville, Tennessee. About his new album, Bieber has said it’s a fun record and seemed excited by his producers on the tracks, all of which he helped co-write. “It’s gonna be a lot of fun, the album,” he told MTV News . “I co-wrote everything on the album, and I got to work with a lot of cool producers. I got to work with The-Dream, I worked with … a lot of cool people, so it was a lot of fun.” His favorite song on the album is “Up,” and he’s also partial to second single “U Smile.” “I worked with [Dan] August [Rigo]. I got him. He’s a really good writer,” Bieber said of his friend and collaborator. “The song is amazing. We really love the song, so we decided to cut it. It’s really amazing.” Are you excited to see Bieber unplugged? How would you react if Justin dedicated a song to you? Sound off in the comments! Alex Chilton Tribute Set For Saturday At SXSW Festival

Surviving Big Star bandmates, members of R.E.M., She & Him and others will play in an all-star tribute band. By Gil Kaufman Alex Chilton Photo: Frank Mullen/ Wireimage Members of R.E.M. , X and She & Him will join the surviving members of Big Star to pay tribute to late frontman Alex Chilton at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, on Saturday. The gig, which Chilton was supposed to play with his legendarily influential band, will take place just three days after the guitarist/singer passed away from a suspected heart attack in New Orleans at age 59. The Saturday night show at Antone’s will feature original Big Star drummer Jody Stephens and newer members Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies acting as a house band, with original Big Star bassist Andy Hummel expected to sit in along with She & Him’s M. Ward, R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, X’s John Doe and Chris Stamey of the dB’s. On Thursday, longtime bandmate Stephens told Billboard that he was still “numb” about Chilton’s death but that the show and a planned panel discussion about Big Star at the annual music industry gathering should go on. “Y’know, it’s a way of including people and sharing thoughts and feelings. Music’s about that. It’s not about excluding people. There are a lot of folks here in Austin at the moment that kind of share those thoughts and feelings; what a great way to remember Alex through stories in the panel, and that evening through music.” Stephens said the show would be a cool way to share some of the music that Chilton was a part of over his 40-year career. “Certainly where Alex and I connected over the years was through music, either in the studio or onstage, so I think that’s a great way for us all to tip our hats to Alex and celebrate his life,” he said. Tributes to Chilton continued to pour in on Thursday, including one from former Replacements leader Paul Westerberg, an avowed acolyte of Chilton’s who wrote the song “Alex Chilton” in his hero’s honor for the ‘Mats’ fifth studio album, Pleased to Meet Me in 1987. “In my opinion, Alex was the most talented triple-threat musician out of Memphis — and that’s saying a ton,” said Westerberg. “His versatility at soulful singing, pop-rock songwriting, master of the folk idiom and his delving into the avant-garde, goes without equal. He was also a hell of a guitar player and a great guy.” Another big fan, Hold Steady singer Craig Finn, told Entertainment Weekly that he was actually turned on to Chilton by the Replacements. “It wasn’t the song, though. ‘Nowhere Is My Home’ is a song he produced for the Replacements on the Tim sessions, and I saw that as a kid and went and bought one of his solo records, and then worked backwards and found Big Star,” he said. “I’m a huge fan. He’s one of my favorite guys. … There are so many songs that just give me so much joy. ‘Thank You Friends’ is one of my favorites. As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about positivity in rock n’ roll, I think that’s about as positive a rock song as has ever been written. Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland also reminisced about Chilton to Billboard, recalling how he used songs from the original band’s difficult swan song, Third/Sister Lovers, as lullabies for his son, Noah. “I think [Chilton] wrote some of the most beautiful songs,” Weiland said. “He was real special to me.” Chilton was also honored in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday, when Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee paid homage on the floor with a one-minute tribute that included lyrics from the singer’s first band, the Box Tops. “His music will live on forever,” Cohen said. “He is an embodiment of Memphis music: hard, different, independent, brilliant, beautiful. We’re lucky he came our way.” Related Artists R.E.M. She & Him
