‘The Voice’ Sends Home Six More Singers In Battle Rounds

Whitney Myer and Sarah Golden are among the contestants sent packing on Monday night. By John Mitchell “The Voice” judges Cee-Lo, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton Photo: Getty Images Last week on “The Voice,” the battle rounds began and Monday night (March 12), they continued with a bang as judges Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton chose six more hopefuls to continue on to the live shows … and sent six others home. With a recording contract with Universal Republic Records on the line, the stakes couldn’t be higher for this diverse group of mega-talented singers. Team Christina First up was Team Xtina and two of her most soulful vocalists, hotel clerk Sera Hill and 51-year-old Geoff McBride. Gathered around the piano, the pair wowed Xtina with their powerhouse voices and the coach seemed in her element working with two seasoned vocalists. Sera was paired with mentor Jewel, who complimented the emotion she brought to Aretha Franklin’s classic “Chain of Fools.” Geoff was teamed with Lionel Richie and seemed at first in awe of the pop legend. “When Geoff walked in, his delivery was unbelievable,” Richie said. “[But] he’s got to give us the personality, he’s got to give us the character.” Adam felt Geoff was more “in the moment” during their face-off in “The Voice’s” pop boxing ring, but said that Hill put on “an excellent show.” Christina complimented Sera’s technique throughout both the rehearsals and the final performance, saying she admired the preciseness of her vocal runs. Ultimately, Sera’s ability to hit her notes and execute her ad libs was enough to carry her though the tough showdown and get Xtina’s vote of approval. For her second pairing, Christina pitted her two most unique voices, Lindsey Pavao and Lee Koch, against each other to tackle Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box.” Jewel encouraged Lee to really learn the song (Lindsey is a big Nirvana fan and already knew the song inside out) and make Kurt Cobain’s highly personal lyrics his own. Their performance was “inventive and original,” according to Cee Lo. Adam chose some different adjectives, calling their take “delightfully creepy,” while complimenting the pair on delivering a truly unique take on Nirvana’s song. Impressed with the character and improvement she brought to her vocal, Aguilera chose Lindsey. “What tipped the scales was that Lindsey is extremely versatile in her vocal approach,” Aguilera said, “and I can’t wait to see what becomes of her.” Team Blake “I chose Lex versus Charlotte for a very simple reason: their personalities,” Shelton said when he announced that outgoing Jersey girl Charlotte Sometimes would hit the ring against the more quiet Lex Land to sing Foster the People’s hit “Pumped Up Kicks.” Lex is admittedly very shy, and Blake wanted to see if being paired with the much more extroverted Charlotte would bring her out of her shell — something he believes she needs if she wants to succeed on the show. And while Lex did rise to the challenge by stepping out of her comfort zone and bringing her distinct and sultry sound to the song, she also had some pitch problems. Charlotte didn’t have any such issues, and Shelton chose her more consistent vocal performance to move forward. Team Cee Lo For his first battle of the night, Cee Lo went with two very different singers, gravel-voiced rocker Juliet Simms and folk singer Sarah Golden, singing Rod Stewart’s “Stay With Me.” Sarah was teamed with Babyface, who supported Sarah’s choice to keep close to her simple, folky roots. “The only way I’m going to beat Juliet is to stay true to who I am,” Sarah admitted. “The only thing I would tell you is to pick your spots,” mentor Ne-Yo told Juliet, recommending she not over-sing the song, but rather pick the right moments to let her unique voice shine. Juliet delivered the raspy vocal Cee Lo expected, and while Blake was a fan of how Sarah’s unique, near-country delivery complimented the band’s shredding guitars, the other judges urged Cee Lo to go with Juliet … which he did. Cee Lo’s final pairing of the night was an emotional one — the music Renaissance man paired Jamar Rogers and Jamie Lono to take on Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Though the two had become good friends, in a winner-take-all competition like “The Voice,” it’s every man for himself. Jamie was having trouble with his voice cracking throughout rehearsals, and mentor Babyface advised him to “do what your voice tells you.” Paired with Ne-Yo, Jamar got the encouragement he needed. Ne-Yo told the young singer that a song like “I Wanna Know What Love Is” is all about the emotion the singer brings to it. And Jamar certainly has plenty of life experience to draw upon — the young man was once a heavy drug user who overcame his addiction, but as a result of his drug use contracted HIV. “If I win this, it will be a victory for anyone who has ever overcome anything,” Jamar said on his way into the battle ring. Jamar’s strong vocal performance won over Adam and Christina, while Jamie’s style earned Blake’s vote. But the final decision was Cee Lo’s, and he chose Jamar to move forward to the live shows. Both singers were left in tears singing the other’s praises during their interviews following their performance. Team Adam Whitney Myer, who got all four judges to turn their chairs during the blind auditions, found her nerves wracked immediately when Adam paired her with Kim Yarbrough, a far more seasoned vocalist who is two decades her senior. Both Adam and mentor Alanis Morissette encouraged the young singer to not even try to overpower Yarbrough but instead opt to spotlight the strong personality in her own voice. Kim’s mentor Robin Thicke pushed for her to embrace the emotion of the song and not focus so intently on showing off her already-developed chops. “I truly felt like I was watching one of those diva concerts,” Blake said of the vocal Olympics that was Kim and Whitney’s performance of Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama.” Unable to be of any assistance, Blake declared, “I pick Carson [Daly].” Meanwhile, both Christina and Cee Lo picked Kim, feeling the song better fit Kim’s more mature vocal. It was a tough decision that clearly weighed on him heavily, but Adam ultimately sided with his fellow judges and chose Kim. Moving on

Jay-Z Brings Swag To His First-Ever SXSW Solo Show

‘SXSW, you’re welcome!’ MC tells crowd of 2,800 before performing favorites like ’99 Problems’ and ‘Dirt Off Your Shoulder.’ By Kara Warner Jay-Z performs in Austin, Texas on Monday Photo: Thomas Fishman/MTV AUSTIN, Texas — If Jay-Z fans thought his appearance at last year’s South by Southwest Music Festival was a big deal, his first-ever solo performance at Austin City Limits Moody Theater on Monday night (March 12) was the opener to end all opening events, and bodes well for the action-packed week of events to come. Officially entitled the “Amex Sync Show Presenting Jay-Z,” fans around the world were able to take part in the show via its livestream in conjunction with a new Twitter initiative for American Express cardholders. MTV News was lucky enough to score tickets to the highly anticipated event. Jay took the stage shortly after 7:30 p.m. CT, dressed casually except for the gold bling around his neck and wrist, opening with “What More Can I Say?” “SXSW, you’re welcome!” he shouted to a very diverse and enthusiastic crowd of 2,800. This was followed by familiar favorite “Dirt Off Your Shoulder,” which featured the first of countless crowd sing-alongs. As his most dedicated fans have come to expect, the man showcased his serious lyrical skills with a perfect mix of hits new and old. From “99 Problems,” to “Big Pimpin’,” to “Excuse Me Miss” (at the start of which he asked us all to “two step”) to the sweet and sentimental “Glory,” Jay kept the crowd hanging on his every word, manipulating our energy masterfully with mostly up-tempo tracks that kept everyone on their feet. Ever the perfectionist, if Jay stumbled on a word or two in a track or didn’t feel like he was totally on point, he would stop mid-song and re-start, for which he had the crowd’s undying support. “I don’t f— around with the words to my songs, y’all. You came to see a live show right?” In addition to totally rocking the house, Jay seemed to be genuinely having a great time onstage. There were several times during the nearly 90-minute set when we saw him break out into full-on grins. “I’m having a good time tonight I must say,” he told the crowd and then later showed his fans respect by acknowledging their energy. “Y’all going to make me crawl away from here tonight,” he said just before busting into “Encore.” There were diamonds in the sky in Austin tonight for sure. Madonna’s MDNA: Swallowing It One Pill At A Time

MTV News takes a look at why Madge’s upcoming album is a drug worth taking. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna wants us to dance the heartbreak away on MDNA. The record, set to drop on March 26, has some of the finest musical moments we’ve heard from the pop legend in the last few years, recalling the finer songs and themes she explored on Ray of Light and Confessions on a Dance Floor. It’s clear that Madge had her heart broken, most likely by her former hubby and British auteur, Guy Ritchie. She explores the pain of life post-divorce on many of the songs on the album, and most of the time, it works perfectly. Madonna really understands heartbreak and she understands even better how it can empower someone to be a better person. While all the buzz seems to be about “I Don’t Give A” and the bit too on-the-nose confessions she makes about her divorce (where she even sings about falling off a horse), her anger is even darker on the William Orbit-produced “Gang Bang.” Sparse at times and always punctuated by a pulsing beat, it’s incredibly hard. It’s the type of record you’d expect to hear at some after-hours club that your really edgy friend knows about. It’s about falling completely in love and falling more deeply into hate when it’s over. Serving as a pop-song revenge fantasy, Madonna sings, “And I’m going straight to hell/ And I’ve got a lot of friends there/ And if I see that b—- in Hell/ I’m gonna shoot him in the head again/ Cause I wanna see him die/ Over and over and over.” On the disco-tinged “Love Spent,” Madge sings about feeling like nothing more than a bank to a former lover (she did have one very costly breakup from Ritchie), and on the remorseful, melodic “Best Friend,” she admits, “Your picture’s off the wall, but I’m still waiting for your call/ And every man that walks through the door/ Will be compared to you.” “Superstar” is light and airy, recalling some of the singer’s highlights from the ’80s. The mid-tempo’s production, which comes courtesy of Hardy “Indiigo” Muanza, certainly helps distract from some of the sillier lyrics that have Madonna comparing her boy toy to famed dudes like Al Capone and James Dean. If anyone was wondering why she called the album MDNA, all they need to do is look to “I’m Addicted,” the super club-thumping track full of bleeping noises, spare moments and then big chugging ones, which are filled out with loopy instances. It’s about letting go and loving someone completely: “Now that your name/ Pumps like blood in my veins/ Pulsing through my body, lighting my mind/ It’s like MDNA and that’s OK.” MDNA, of course, is also known as ecstasy, giving the track the perfect metaphor for love on the dance floor. While most of the album addresses the highs and lows of falling in love, “Some Girls” is all about Madonna proclaiming her awesomeness. Another Orbit jam, it’s a crunchy, robotic, thumping anthem that puts Madonna right in the center of female empowerment. “I’m not like the rest,” she proclaims, as if anyone would ever question that. “Some girls are second best.” On the chorus, she declares, “Some girls are not like me/ I’m everything you’ve ever dreamed of/ I got you begging please.” One of the highlights is “Turn Up the Radio,” which sounds like it was born to be this summer’s feel-good anthem. It’s bright, happy and fun, all about letting go of the past. Over Martin Solveig’s sunny production, Madge sings, “It was time I opened my eyes/ I’m leaving the past behind/ Nothing’s ever what it seems/ Including this time and this crazy dream.” She’s not wrong to be that confident on this album. She’s certainly in the groove. And the album is full of strength, but it’s also her vulnerability that rounds it out. If fans thought link type=”content” id=”1678478″> “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” and “Girl Gone Wild” are what this era is all about, they are only seeing pieces of the MDNA puzzle, that’s only completed when listening to the album from front to back. In the end, this album is a drug worth taking. Are you counting down the days to the release of MDNA ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Madonna

Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream: Complete Confection For ‘Hard-Core Fans’

‘I will close the book on Teenage Dream soon, but [ Complete Confection ] just felt really organic,’ Perry tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry Photo: Jeff Bottari/ Getty Images Katy Perry may already be thinking of what direction she will take on her next album, but before she does that, she wanted to do something special for her fans. On March 26, Perry will release Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection , which features all of her songs from her chart-topping album Teenage Dream plus some bonus tracks. “With Teenage Dream, the reasons why I wanted to put out this special edition, Complete Confection, is two major reasons for me: One, I’m doing it mostly for the hard-core fans because they always love all the extras,” Perry told MTV News in Los Angeles. “The second reason I wanted to do it is because it’s my one last push, to push that person that is on the precipice of becoming a fan. They’re thinking to themselves, ‘I bought four or five singles, maybe I should actually complete my album and now I should really complete my album because I’m gonna get 19 songs for a really great price.’ I think it’s like a bargain and I’m doing it for my fans.” Perry revealed that she wrote several songs that didn’t make the cut on Dream, which is why Confection will feature not only Perry’s new hit single “Part of Me” but several other songs, including the Tricky Stewart-produced track “Dressing Up.” “This song is really special. It’s called ‘Dressing Up,’ so it’s going to be a big record,” Stewart told MTV News in October. “It definitely fits. It’s right there in what her sensibilities are as a musician and a songwriter. She doesn’t change much. She has a very keen musical taste. It’ll be really good.” Even though there are several new tracks on Confection, Perry says she is not considering this a whole new album. “I’m really excited and I’m not putting it out there as, like, another album — you know how you find different artists do their version, like eight songs or something. I’m am ready to make a new record, and I will close the book on Teenage Dream soon, but [ Complete Confection ] just felt really organic.” Are you excited for Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection ? Tyga, Trae Tha Truth To Swag Out On ‘RapFix Live’ Today!

Tune in today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com to catch a special introduction from DJ Whoo Kid and G-Unit signee Paris. By Rob Markman Tyga Photo: C Flanigan/ WireImage It’s been a long time coming, but Tyga has finally released his Young Money debut, Careless World: Rise of the Last King, and to celebrate, the L.A. spitter will visit “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (February 29). It hasn’t been an easy road for Tyga, who released his independent debut LP, No Introduction, in 2008, but after hooking up with Lil Wayne’s YMCMB crew, he has amassed a series of wins. His biggest single, “Rack City,” has already peaked at #3 on the Billboard Rap Songs chart and spawned a high-profile remix featuring T.I., Young Jeezy, Wale, Fabolous and Meek Mill . While tracks like the Lil Wayne-assisted “Faded” and “King & Queens” featuring Wale and Nas have fans excited about the album, which was released February 21, there is still some controversy surrounding the release. It seems Tyga failed to clear a sample from Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and the physical CD was pulled from major retail chains like Best Buy and Target. The snafu will no doubt put a dent in Tyga’s first-week sales, but he is still projected to sell about 75,000 copies digitally. Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth will also appear on this week’s “RapFix Live” to make a special announcement. Emerging from the underground rap crew the Screwed Up Click, Trae has made quite a name for himself in the streets. With a number of solo albums, mixtapes and collaboration LPs like 2003’s A–holes by Nature , with Z-Ro, Trae has become one of the most respected MCs in the game. His 2011 LP Street King featured contributions from Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Wyclef Jean and Wiz Khalifa, to name a few. Now Trae is ready to take a new step in his career, but you have to tune in to “RapFix Live” on Wednesday to find out. Finally, DJ Whoo Kid is set to hit the famous red couch with newly inked G-Unit Signee Paris. Fans may have heard the femcee spitting on 50 Cent’s latest mixtape project, Big 10. Catch Tyga, DJ Whoo Kid and Trae tha Truth on “RapFix Live” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtags #RapFixLive. Davy Jones, Monkees Lead Singer, Dead At 66

Jones died Wednesday from a heart attack. By Gil Kaufman Davy Jones in 1967 Photo: Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Image Davy Jones, lead singer of 1960s made-for-TV pop group the Monkees , died Wednesday (February 29) at age 66. According to TMZ , Jones died of a heart attack at his home in Florida. The baby-faced singer born David Thomas Jones in Manchester, England, on December 30, 1945, began his career as a child actor, appearing in a British daytime soap opera and radio plays and taking a brief detour into being a horse jockey before landing a Tony nomination at age 16 for his role as the Artful Dodger in a Broadway production of “Oliver!” (In a rock and roll footnote, glam-rock icon David Bowie adopted his stage name after worrying that his birth name, David Jones, would cause confusion with the then emerging stage star and future Monkees singer.) In an ironic twist of fate given his future stardom, he appeared alongside his “Oliver!” castmates on the December 1964 episode of “The Ed Sullivan Show” that featured the legendary American TV debut of the Beatles. He launched a solo recording career in 1965, the same year he was chosen to fill out the cast of the TV musical sitcom that would launch him to global fame. The group was put together by producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, who were inspired by “A Hard Day’s Night” to assemble a Beatles-like band to provide the face for their slapstick series. He appeared alongside American musicians Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, providing lead vocals for many of the band’s most iconic tunes, including “Daydream Believer,” “Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)” and “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You.” The group’s run on TV lasted from 1966 to 1968, and though the bandmembers initially were barred by producers from writing and performing their own music, as time went on, they took over more of the musical reins and the songs took on an increasingly psychedelic tone. Along the way, they scored hits such as “Last Train to Clarksville,” “I’m a Believer” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” with each bandmember contributing vocals but Jones emerging as the “cute one” and de facto maracas-shaking frontman alongside drummer Dolenz. With wacky premises that presaged the music-video boom of the 1980s, the show was a hit and the band went on tour, eventually breaking from the show’s musical producer, Don Kirshner, to explore increasingly esoteric sounds. The show was canceled in 1968, and Jones appeared alongside his bandmates in the trippy feature-film flop “Head,” which was co-written by then-unknown actor Jack Nicholson. The “Pre-Fab Four” limped along for several more years, but after the loss of Tork and Nesmith, Dolenz and Jones were left to tour as a duo for much of the 1970s. The bandmates would continue to reunite in spurts — with the exception of Nesmith — and in 1986, MTV helped revive interest in the group with Monkees marathons that rebooted interest and once again sent Jones back on the road. Jones continued to tour and perform on TV and in films throughout the 1980s and ’90s, appearing on “My Two Dads,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” releasing his final album, the cover LP She, in 2009. Jones was slated to mount a U.K. tour in honor of the group’s 45th anniversary in May along with Tork and Dolenz. Share your memories of Jones and the Monkees in the comments below. Justin Bieber’s Top 18 Moments: The Countdown Continues!

Before Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday on Thursday, we’re counting down his best moments so far. Check out #13 to #6! By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Justin Bieber is one day away from turning 18, and we’re counting down his 18 greatest moments so far in honor of the occasion. This week, we kicked things off by looking back on some of the highlights, from Justin crashing this year’s Oscars to his headline-making romance with girlfriend Selena Gomez. In the latest installment of our Bieber birthday countdown, we pick up with #13 to #6, narrowing down the early achievements that helped shape the teen into the pop superstar we know and love. We’ll celebrate this week until the final reveal on Justin’s big day on Thursday. What will be the #1 moment? You’ll have to keep it locked at MTVNews.com! 13. Bieber Drops “Baby” Video In February 2010, Justin dropped his star-making “Baby” video . Proving he had lots of swag, he enlisted Ludacris and Drake to appear in the bowling-party-themed clip, which featured a romance with his pretty leading lady. The video also displayed Bieber’s budding persona as a charming pop Romeo that no girl can resist. “It starts off, I really like this girl, but we didn’t [get] along; we couldn’t be together,” he told MTV News while shooting the video. “Basically, I want her back and [I’m] kind of going through the whole thing. I’m chasing her around, trying to get her, and she’s kind of playing hard to get, but I’m persistent. I keep going.” 12. Justin’s Voice Changes No one is immune to puberty, and that includes teen stars. As Bieber continued to mature before our eyes, his voice also took a turn for the manly. But he wasn’t too worried about it. “Everyone’s voice changes. Puberty is a natural thing,” Bieber said in 2010. “I have the best vocal coach in the world and we’re working on my voice and doing what I need to do. It’s not like as soon as you hit puberty you stop singing. Usher is the best mentor in the world and he survived puberty. He tells me what to do, what not to do.” 11. Bieber Goes Hip-Hop Between his rap persona, Shawty Mane , and getting love from a number of A-list hip-hop pals like Kanye West, Luda, Drake and Lil Wayne , Bieber has proved that swag is more than just a hashtag to him. This kid can legitimately hang with some of the hardest guys in the game — and hold his own. 10. 2011 Grammy Awards At last year’s Grammys, Bieber seemed poised to take home a trophy, but he famously lost in the prestigious Best New Artist category to Esperanza Spalding . He shook off the loss, though, and vowed that one day he would take home Grammy gold. He’s set to release his next album, Believe, in 2012. Grammy voters, take note! 9. Bieber Drops My World 2.0 For his second EP, My World 2.0, Bieber upped the ante when he enlisted folks like The-Dream to produce. While the record was released in March 2010, only months after his first EP, My World, the follow-up managed to eclipse the original thanks to memorable songs like “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Up.” 2.0 helped spark the frenzy known as Bieber Fever. The teen star even scored an MTV special on the series “Diary.” 8. Bieber Goes Under the Mistletoe He invited us all to premiere his video for “Mistletoe,” the lead single off his holiday-themed Under the Mistletoe. When he sat down with MTV News for his “MTV First” interview , he talked all about shooting the video in Nashville, his desire to make a cool Christmas album and getting the chance to work with heroes Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. 7. Fans Welcomed to My World In 2009, Bieber dropped his first EP . Full of sugary-sweet pop, the songs launched him from viral Internet sensation to full-on star. The album was rife with puppy-love tracks that displayed Bieber’s ear for melodies and recalled some of the great pop music of the past from stars like New Kids on the Block and even Michael Jackson. 6. First Film, ‘Never Say Never,’ Released Bieber’s first foray into the world of big-screen blockbusters came courtesy of a 3-D film, “Never Say Never,” that served as a documentary and a concert film. It addressed any of his haters with in-depth interviews with the folks who know him best and Bieber himself, who recalled his personal hardships before making it big. If that wasn’t enough for the Beliebers, it also featured a 3-D Bieber shaking his floppy hair around. Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our Facebook page! Stick with MTV News all week as we count down Justin Bieber ‘s 18 greatest moments leading up to his 18th birthday. On Thursday, March 1 — the teen star’s official big day — we will reveal the #1 greatest moment in his career so far. Plus, stay tuned for even more Bieber as we celebrate the milestone! Adele’s album, 21, fittingly took the top spot for a record 21st straight week. The previous title holder at 20 weeks? Boosted by her six Grammy awards and performance comeback, Adele’s 21 saw its best sales in 52 weeks on the U.S. chart, selling 730,000 copies just last week. 21 features hits “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You” and has now sold over 18 million copies worldwide since its release in Feb. 2011, Columbia Records said.
