Nicki Minaj Very ‘Selective’ About Next Project

‘She wants hit records every time and she wants to be creative,’ producer Kane Beatz tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ WireImage Behind the Beats: Kane Beatz When Nicki Minaj and Kane Beatz got together on her Pink Friday debut, the results were undeniable. Besides crafting songs like the soul-baring “Dear Old Nicki” and braggadocious album opener “I’m the Best,” the Florida producer gave the Harajuku Barbie a smash single with “Super Bass.” So it makes sense that just as Nicki the Ninja heads back into the studio to begin working on her follow-up, she’s tapped Kane for a beat or two. “It’s crazy. We got one so far. She’s in L.A. goin’ crazy,” the platinum hitmaker told Mixtape Daily while he walked the black carpet at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards . Kane, who is also working with Roscoe Dash and with Rick Ross on his upcoming God Forgives, I Don’t LP, revealed that Nicki is in the planning stages of her next album, so things could take awhile. “She just started, so she’s really picking her music and picking the songs. She’s real selective,” he said. “She’ll pick all the beats before she even starts writing, so right now, we’re just getting music together, and it’s goin’ crazy right now.” When working with Minaj, the “Bed Rock” producer focuses on presenting the Young Money star with hit records but also different types of beats that can allow her imagination to run wild. “She wants hit records every time and she wants to be creative,” he said. “With Nicki, it’s more about getting the music right and leaving her the room to be creative and leaving her room to do her.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

Rihanna Beats Madonna’s Top 10 Chart Record

Rih now holds record for solo artist with 20 top 10 singles gained in shortest time on Billboard Hot 100. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Samir Hussein/WireImage Pop icons better watch their backs because the new class of pop stars is eyeing your thrones. Last month, Katy Perry tied Michael Jackson’s singles record , and now Rihanna has beaten Madonna ‘s record for a solo artist achieving 20 top 10 singles in the shortest amount of time, according to Billboard . The music industry magazine reports that Rihanna is the fastest solo artist to reach 20 Hot 100 Top 10 singles thanks to her Talk That Talk lead single “We Found Love.” The Calvin Harris-produced track currently sits at #9 in its second week on the chart, after debuting at #16. The rise to the top 10 means that Rihanna has beaten the Queen of Pop herself, Madge, for the quickest rise. She first appeared in the top 10 back in June 2005 with “Pon De Replay.” Since then, she’s had 19 other songs in the top 10 in six years and four months, beating out Madonna by five months. But Rihanna’s achievement only applies to solo artists, as the Beatles hold the all-time record. The foursome took a very swift two years and seven months to amass 20 top 10 singles back in the 1960s. The news comes as Rihanna continues to hype up her Navy for the release of her album later this year. She shot a video for “We Found Love” last month in Northern Ireland. During the shoot, Rihanna made headlines when her “inappropriate state of undress” angered the farmer on whose land she was shooting the video. A release date for the clip hasn’t been announced. Rihanna had this message for her fans about the video: “#WFLvid I really cant stop thinking about this video we just shot! EASILY the BEST video I’ve done thus far! Definitely my fav 1, very powerful.” Related Artists Rihanna Madonna

Chris Brown Stirs Up Frenzy On F.A.M.E. Tour

TeamBreezy came out in droves on Friday for star’s New York stop at Nassau Coliseum. By Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown performs during his F.A.M.E. Tour (file) Photo: Getty Images UNIONDALE, New York — If there’s one place where Chris Brown escapes the nimbus cloud of unfortunate headlines that often threatens to rain down on him, it’s the stage. He proved that emphatically when he touched down Friday night at New York’s Nassau Coliseum (capacity 18,000), the midway mark on his F.A.M.E. Tour. Away from his Twitter account, even the hidden dangers of his iPhone , Breezy cleared the brush of his personal distractions, and was simply sublime onstage. Rather than calling to mind his pop&B peers, Brown conjured a late Pop King who also battled bad press during his lifetime. Such is Brown’s command that, four albums to his credit, now even the songs on which he’s only featured seem to become his own. Suited up in a jacket and tuxedo pants embellished with spangly trim, Chris laid into the hook that turns Ace Hood’s “Body 2 Body” from sexy to downright sensual, and had the moves to match. The Coliseum performance space was expansive and divided into three tiers, connected by a series of steps and ladders, with a series of five oversize cylinders at the base, and overhead, a large screen that projected CB music videos as well as a running concert skit that had fans peeking at suggestive messages sent from the star’s phone to the squealing girls amassed in the crowd. “Can I see you tonight?” one of them read). He rinsed off and repeated the same feat for his song-stealing chorus on Big Sean’s bottle-clinking “My Last,” stalking the stage like an MC. By the time Chris got to the slightly aggressive bedroom ballad “No BS,” the white dress shirt and jacket were off, and the squealing had reached fever-pitch. What is it about C.Breezy? Maybe it’s that he’s right at that moment where he’s balancing late-adolescent energy (Brown seemed to bounce on the balls of his feet, his Jordans never quite touching ground) with budding manhood, but he managed to find the perfect dose of sweetness for the down-on-bended-knee songs like “All Back,” “She Ain’t You” and “Next to You,” and then just the right amount of swagger for hard-hitting, dance-heavy hits like “Yeah 3X” and “Forever.” Chris’ tenor is increasingly rich, and on songs from early in his catalog like “With You,” he sounded as heartbreakingly sincere (maybe more so) as he does on the 2007 recording. For his Jordin Sparks-assisted “No Air,” CB asked the ladies to step in for the onetime “American Idol” winner; they were so good with the lyrics, he paused several times, beaming and cocking his head appreciatively. “Y’all tired?” he asked the howling fans after tourmate and frequent collaborator Tyga re-emerged for “Deuces” and a thunderous take on the Young Money up-and-comer’s “Snapbacks Back” (itself a takeoff of Meek Mill and Rick Ross’ spine-tingling “Tupac Back”). “I’m just asking,” Breezy laughed in his Virginia drawl, “Y’all want some water?” Far from tired, the TeamBreezy-devoted, which had basically given up sitting, were fully dancing in the aisles as Brown’s troupe of pros — donning a variety of costumes, from Jabbawockeez-style masks to yearbook-worthy Varsity jackets — for nearly 90-minutes’ worth of straight street dancing. But they truly elevated the art form during the show-closing “Beautiful People,” a transcendent (seriously, listen to it) electro-flavored Benny Benassi production. With the audience bathed in lasers, Chris’ floor team, clad in Martian-meets-mummy-style L.E.D. suits, lit up alternately in florescent light patterns. Brown, illuminated himself, descended the multilevel stage and joined them for one of the finest breakdowns in recent memory. If the F.A.M.E. singer isn’t the finest R&B performer of our generation, he’s certainly gunning for the title. Think MJ would be proud. Apart from getting super assists from Tyga and fellow opener T-Pain, who rolled out his radio smashes on Friday, Kelly Rowland made it a co-ed affair. The former Destiny’s Child princess was on one Friday night: Flanked by a gang of muscled male dancers, she powered through DC smashes, her hip-hop features (“Dilemma”) and solo smashes. Motivation, indeed. What did you think of the F.A.M.E. Tour? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Chris Brown

Guns N’ Roses, Eric B. & Rakim Nab Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nods

Joan Jett, Heart, the Cure and the Spinners also among nominees. By Gil Kaufman Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic.com One defined rock in the 1980s and early 1990s, and the other’s biggest hit name-calls the genre. Those might be some reasons why Guns N’ Roses and Joan Jett are among the leading nominees for this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2012. In addition to the Axl Rose-led group and the woman who made “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” a rallying cry, other first-time nominees who could take the podium at the April 14, 2012, induction ceremony at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, include legendary mope rockers the Cure, sister act Heart, hip-hop icons Eric B. & Rakim, classic vocal group the Spinners, blues giant Freddie King, soul act Rufus with Chaka Khan and 1960s rockers the Small Faces/Faces. A number of previous nominees are back again for another shot at the Hall, including the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, War, Donovan and Laura Nyro. Acts become eligible for the Hall 25 years after the release of their first single or album, so this year’s crop all started releasing music in or before the year 1986. Jett is one of the most iconic women in rock, from her teenage jailbait tour in the all-girl group the Runaways to her tough-as-nails leather-clad days as a solo star and bandleader of the Blackhearts. With her signature low-slung guitar, spiky black hair and Elvis sneer, Jett broke out as a solo star in the early 1980s with a string of fist-pumping hits (many of which were covers of old-school rock tunes) including “I Love Rock ‘n Roll,” “Crimson and Clover,” “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” “Do You Wanna Touch Me” and “Bad Reputation.” Led by the mercurial Rose, GN’R re-invented hard rock with 1987’s Appetite for Destruction, which featured such indelible glam-punk hits as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “It’s So Easy.” The band splintered a decade later amid a clash of egos, disagreement over musical direction and drug issues that resulted in Rose soldiering on alone with a parade of replacement sidemen. New York’s Eric B. & Rakim are considered one of the greatest hip-hop duos of all time, rising to prominence on 1986’s Paid in Full with a sound that mixed scratching and samples of old-school R&B with B.’s hard-hitting rhymes on tunes such as “Eric B. Is President,” “I Know You Got Soul,” the title track and “Move the Crowd.” Formed in 1976, British band the Cure have become shorthand for a certain kind of poppily depressive goth rock sound. Fronted by fright-wig-and-red-lipstick-wearing Robert Smith, the Cure are enduring college rock favorites thanks to such gloomily frothy tunes as “Friday I’m in Love,” “Just Like Heaven,” “Close to Me” and “Why Can’t I Be You?” Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson formed Heart in 1973 in Seattle, Washington, mixing their love of hard rock and folk music on such mid-1970s radio staples as “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man” and “Barracuda.” R&B vocal group the Spinners were birthed on the fertile Detroit soul scene in 1961, hitting the charts multiple times with songs including “It’s a Shame,” “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” and “Games People Play.” Chicago blues band Rufus struck gold with lead singer Chaka Khan, who helped them score hits with “Tell Me Something Good,” “Sweet Thing” and “Ain’t Nobody.” Late Texas bluesman King (known as “The Texas Cannonball”) was often referred to as one of the “three kings” of electric blues guitar, along with Albert King and B.B. King. He was best known for the songs “Have You Ever Loved a Woman” and “Hide Away” and for being one of the first blues players to have an integrated backing band. Like the Who, English mod rockers the Small Faces were heavily influenced by American R&B, which they explored on signature songs “Itchycoo Park,” “Lazy Sunday” and “All or Nothing.” In their second phase as the Faces, members included future Rolling Stones rhythm guitarist Ronnie Wood and singer Rod Stewart. Dissension has become one of the reliable side stories of the Rock Hall ceremonies. While such notoriously splintered acts as Led Zeppelin and the Talking Heads managed to set aside differences for one night (Blondie, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Van Halen not so much), the biggest question this year is whether sole remaining Guns member Rose will make nice with his estranged former bandmates should the group make it into the Hall of Fame.
