‘Twilight’ Newcomers The Joy Formidable Surprised By Spot On Soundtrack

‘I haven’t seen the films,’ frontwoman Ritzy Bryan confesses, despite landing lead-off track on ‘Breaking Dawn’ soundtrack. By James Montgomery Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment There are some bands prepared for the increased attention that a spot on a “Twilight” soundtrack brings. And then there are bands like voluminous rockers the Joy Formidable who, despite snagging the opening slot on the upcoming “Breaking Dawn” soundtrack , remain blissfully unaware of everything to come. Or, really, everything about the “Twilight” series, for that matter. “I can’t say I’ve ever read one. I haven’t seen the films either, but I have heard the soundtracks, and I was familiar with some of the songs, you know, Metric and the Black Keys ,” frontwoman Ritzy Bryan told MTV News. “So I was more aware of the musical side of ‘Twilight’ than I was the books or the movies. Actually, I know very little [about the books]. I know they’re about vampires, and I know they’ve connected very much with an audience … so they’re obviously much enjoyed by a lot of people.” And yet, despite all that, their contribution to the “Breaking Dawn” soundtrack — a ringing, downright desperate song called “Endtapes” that will be the album’s lead-off track — fits seamlessly; mostly because, as Bryan explained, it is very much about the themes that remain central to the “Twilight” series. “The song was written at the same time as our album, and because of that, it has a lot of the tone and the feel of the album. And those songs, there’s a lot of turbulence going on, and it definitely chronicles a year that was very turbulent on one hand, but you know, it’s me trying to push for that hope and that sense of optimism,” she said. “It’s a song that captures that spirit. It’s a song about the frustration of not being able to have closure on a difficult situation.” And given that, unlike fellow “Breaking Dawn” artist Christina Perri , she’s basically oblivious to the entire “Twilight” phenomenon, Bryan has no idea where “Endtapes” will be used in the upcoming “Breaking Dawn” film … shoot, she’s not even sure she and her bandmates will get invited to the premiere. That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t go, of course. “I don’t know anything about that! If we get an invite, I wouldn’t mind going to the cinema. I haven’t been to the cinema for such a long time,” she laughed. “We’ve been perpetually on the road for about a year and a half, and we watch lots and lots of DVDs in our van, but a trip to the cinema would be wonderful. I would have to do some laundry, but that would be fine!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y Have More Collaborations In The Stash

‘You may can expect an album, mixtape, maybe nothing,’ Big Sean tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Big Sean Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Big Sean When Wiz Khalifa , Curren$y and Big Sean began releasing tracks at the top of the summer, talk of a joint project between the joint-loving trio excited rap fans. What began as an isolated leak with “O.T.T.R.” gave way to four other tracks (“Flowers,” the syrupy “Weed Brownies,” “Dot Dot Dot” and “Proceed”) in less than a week. But beyond that, who knows? Sean hinted at a mixtape in interviews, but nothing ever materialized. “We just had a studio bus on tour, me and Wiz and Curren$y. You know, they already did the How Fly mixtape, so they were working on something themselves,” Big Sean Don explained to Mixtape Daily of the trio’s collaboration. “They were talking about how they wanted a verse from me. I was like, ‘Man, f— a verse, why don’t I just be on the whole thing? Why don’t we just all do something?’ And then Wiz was like, ‘Man, it gotta be for so much money, though. Or if we gonna do it, let’s just do it for free and put it out ourselves.’ ” The idea didn’t fully get off the ground, though Sean does reveal that the three amigos have more tracks in the stash. “We were just really figuring out what to do, but most importantly we just did those five songs and we got more songs, too,” he said. “We put a song out every day. It’s crazy because a lot of people who are popular aren’t really taking full advantage of the Internet or taking advantage of being able to really do stuff like that. For us, it’s just having fun with it.” As of now there aren’t any plans for the rest of the songs, but Sean leaves just a little hope for a collaborative tape. “You may can expect something. You may can expect an album, mixtape, maybe nothing. Maybe we’ll never put another song out,” he said before doing the infamous Kanye shrug. “It’s tight to have that element of surprise.” Related Artists Big Sean Wiz Khalifa Curren$y

Top 10 Lauryn Hill Songs Lauryn Hill Has Butchered [ORIGINAL]

Here is the original post:

If you go see Lauryn Hill in concert hoping to hear her greatest hits, you may be disappointed, because most of them sound NOTHING like the original. At this year’s New York stop of Rock The Bells, Lauryn acknowledged the criticism and said, “You always hear people saying things like, ‘she does the old music but she doesn’t do it the old way.” So why does she do it? ”When I get onstage and I’m in front of you, my heartbeats go faster,” Lauryn explained. “So sometimes we’ve got to bring these tempos up so I can move a little faster.” Performing a song hundreds of time can get redundant for an artist, and part of the live experience of seeing an artist in concert is getting a modified version of the music. But most of Lauryn Hills songs are borderline unrecognizable in concert. Here are 10 Lauryn Hill songs butchered by Lauryn Hill, and let us know what you think in the comments section at the bottom of this page. Pass. “When It Hurts So Bad” Again, Lauryn takes a beautiful song, gives it a soundtrack fit for a lounge, and makes it feel cheesy.

Curren$y Echoes Jay-Z’s Classic Debut, Ski Beatz Says

‘ Pilot Talk 1 and 2 are like the Reasonable Doubt s of this time,’ producer tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Ski Beatz Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Ski Beatz Ski Beatz knows talent when he sees it. Early in his career, the platinum producer from North Carolina also doubled as an MC in the 1990s group Original Flavor, but after meeting a young, fast-rapping Jay-Z, he decided to put down the mic and pick up producing full time. He hasn’t looked back, crafting fan-favorite tracks for the likes of Hov, Camp Lo, Talib Kweli, Lil Kim and Curren$y . These days, it’s the New Orleans spitta who has him most excited. “I feel like the albums I did with Curren$y — Pilot Talk 1 and 2 — are like the Reasonable Doubt s of this time,” Ski told Mixtape Daily . Comparing Curren$y to Jay might seem like a stretch, but having produced four tracks on Jigga’s classic debut, Ski has enough experience with both artists to draw the educated parallel. “The music that I chose and gave Curren$y is timeless music; it’s gonna be around,” Ski explained. “Older people listen to Curren$y because the beats — it kinda takes them back. But younger cats listen to it because of the lyrical content and the flows; because they are able to relate to what Curren$y is talking about. “That’s how it was with Jay: The music that we chose was kinda older-sounding music, but the lyrics was now.” For Ski, meeting Jay was life-changing. It was Brooklyn’s DJ Clark Kent who introduced the two when he brought Jay to an Original Flavor video shoot. Dame Dash, who managed Ski and Original Flavor at the time, also was impressed by the up-and-coming Jigga. Together with Kareem “Biggs” Burke, Dame and Jay would go on to start Roc-A-Fella Records. Ski just wanted to make their beats. “Jay rhymed, and at the moment when I heard him rhyme, I was like, ‘This dude gotta get on one of our songs,’ ” Ski remembered. “He was dope! He was the best rapper I’ve ever heard in my life. “He got on [Original Flavor’s] ‘Can I Get Open,’ and after that, me, personally, I decided to stop rapping and just start producing him solely.” Ski eventually would move on from working with Roc-A-Fella. According to the producer, he wanted to build his own Roc-A-Blok production company. Ski would build his discography with Camp Lo, Sporty Thievz and Pittsburgh Slim. He has recently hooked up with Dame Dash again, and put out his 24 Hour Karate School compilation in 2010 and its sequel, 24 Hour Karate School Part 2, in August. The new volume features Freddie Gibbs, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and Maybach Music Group signee Stalley. The previous album boasted features from Jay Electronica, the Cool Kids, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y and Smoke Dza. While nothing can top working with Jay-Z, for Ski, these days it’s about discovering what’s new. “I love being able to still be relevant and being able to work with these cats: the Wiz Khalifas, the Smoke Dzas, the Dom Kennedys,” he said. Adele, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Land New Guinness Records

Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Black Eyed Peas and ‘Glee’ also get new entries in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records.’ By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Adele has been on a record-setting tear all year and now the British songbird can claim to be a “Guinness Book of World Records” champ. The upcoming 2012 edition of the book reveals that the “Rolling in the Deep” singer is in good company, as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Willow Smith and Justin Bieber also set some high-water marks over the past 12 months. Adele can count three records, including first female to land two singles and two albums in the U.K. top five simultaneously — which only the Beatles had achieved before in 1963. Her breakthrough second CD, 21, claimed the record as the first album in U.K. chart history to sell 3 million copies in one calendar year. She also logged the most consecutive weeks with the #1 album in the U.K. for a solo female with 11 weeks at the top — beating a record previously held by Madonna’s The Immaculate Collection — and most cumulative weeks with a U.K. #1 for a solo female (18), beating out both Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain, who shared the previous record at 11 weeks. Lady Gaga’s social media predominance was rewarded, landing her the Most Followers on Twitter crown with 11,259,372 as of June 29 (she’s currently at 13,469,754). In addition, “Poker Face” was honored for Most Weeks on U.S. Digital Hot Songs chart at 83 weeks. Gaga made the book last year for having the most consecutive weeks on the U.K. chart and being the most searched-for woman on the Internet. Some other new records: Justin Bieber : The singer’s “Baby” was dubbed the Most Popular Video of Any Kind Online, thanks to 463,820,304 views as of February 16, 2011. The Black Eyed Peas : The Biggest Selling Download in the U.K. is “I Gotta Feeling,” the first-ever track to go over 1 million downloads in England. J.K. Rihanna : First Female to have U.K. #1 singles in five consecutive years (2007-2011), from “Rude Boy” to her most recent, “Only Girl (In the World).” Only Elvis and the Beatles have had more U.K. #1 singles in consecutive years. Willow Smith : The Youngest Transatlantic Top 20 Artist, thanks to “Whip My Hair” hitting the top 20 when she was only 10 years old. Lil Wayne : Most U.S. Hot 100 Hits by a Rap Artist with 64 between 1999 and 2010. U2 : Highest Grossing Music Tour for the 360 outing, which by April 2011 had raked in more than $539 million for 110 shows between July 2009 and July 2011.
