Tyler Clementi’s Roommate Indicted On Hate Crime Charges

Clementi’s September suicide inspired nationwide anti-bullying movement. By Gil Kaufman Tyler Clementi Photo: Facebook A New Jersey grand jury indicted Rutgers University student Dharum Ravi on 15 charges on Wednesday in connection with the September suicide of his roommate, Tyler Clementi . The charges came nine months after Clementi’s death inspired a nationwide anti-bullying movement that has drawn support from everyone from Lady Gaga to President Obama, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. According to The New York Times, after initially being charged with invasion of privacy, Ravi was accused in Wednesday’s indictment of acting with antigay motives in posting a romantic encounter between Clementi and another man online, a hate crime that could result in a sentence of five to 10 years in prison if convicted. In addition, the grand jury charged Ravi, 19, with an attempted cover-up in the case, accusing him of deleting a Twitter post that had alerted others about a second encounter Clementi had planned with the man and replacing it with a post that was “intended to mislead the investigation.” Prosecutors also claimed that Ravi attempted to persuade some witnesses not to testify against him. Prosecutors explained on Wednesday that the bias-intimidation charges were based in part on events that began on August 6, when Ravi learned his roommate’s name, later announcing on Twitter that Clementi was gay. “The grand jury charged that the invasion of privacy and attempt to invade the privacy of

Lady Gaga Approves ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Parody Of ‘Born This Way’

Comedian claims Gaga’s people initially denied him the right to release his parody ‘Perform This Way.’ By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images The great “Weird Al” Yankovic-Lady Gaga standoff of 2011 appears to be over. After the song parody king wrote a lengthy blog on Wednesday complaining that Gaga’s people had denied his request to release his stinging “Perform This Way” cover of Gaga’s “Born This Way,” he updated the situation later in the day and said it was a big misunderstanding. “After putting my Lady Gaga parody on YouTube this morning — and announcing that it wouldn’t be on my next album because Gaga didn’t approve it — there was a huge outpouring of disappointment from the Internet,” Yankovic wrote . “Apparently the fact that she didn’t approve it was news to Lady Gaga herself! Gaga’s manager has now admitted that he never forwarded my parody to Gaga — she had no idea at all. Even though we assumed that Gaga herself was the one making the decision (because, well, that’s what we were TOLD), he apparently made the decision completely on his own.” Though a spokesperson for Gaga had not returned requests for comment at press time, Yankovic said the singer’s manager has apologized to him for the mix-up and noted that apparently Mother Monster “loves the song.” Yankovic’s songs are legally protected by fair-use laws, but he has made a point of getting approval from the artists he is parodying before releasing his songs, including Michael Jackson, R.E.M., AC/DC, Madonna and Chamillionaire, who sang the praises of Al’s “White & Nerdy” take on “Ridin’.” Citing an unnamed source “extremely close” to the singer, TMZ reported that “there must have been a misunderstanding because [Gaga] is in no way trying to block the release of the parody.” Other unnamed sources added, “she’s busy touring and hasn’t heard the song yet. Her manager hasn’t had a chance to play it for her yet … she’s a huge Weird Al fan.” Yankovic, 51, said he’s thrilled the situation has been resolved because he not only respects and admires Gaga as an artist (who clearly has a “great” sense of humor), but it also means he gets to put out his new album. Proceeds from the video will go to the Human Rights Campaign. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

DJ Quik Breaks Down The Color Of Sound On New Album

View original post here:

In honor of 4/20 here is something that you should read under the influence but is just as insightful sober. DJ Quik, the Compton California OG producer and MC, has just released his eighth album The Book Of David. If you haven’t ingested the female-friendly sonics of “Real Women” or “ Luv Of My Life” head over to your favorite online retailer and make it happen stat. When Mr. David Blake spoke with hip-hop production site Nodfactor.com about the musical inspirations behind his latest work he took the time to explain how we see music as well as hear it. Take a look. There are more sonic colors on this record than I’m used to using. They’re complex, they’re moody, they’re emotive but they’re fun at the same time. It sounds like…I think of records like Donny Hathaway ….they have real red tones in them. And puce. They’re minor 9ths so they’re colorful and they make you feel something as soon as you hear em. As opposed to a C major or C minor chord, those are like blue notes in a sense. B Flats. In hip-hop “ Sweet Black P*ssy” is a red record. “Tonight” i s a bluish record it’s a like a burgundy bluish. “ Born And Raised In Compton ” is brown. It’s Isaac Hayes , his skin color and his record label. Just brown because that groove is so funky. The first Barkay’s band did that. The ones that crashed in that plane with Otis Redding . They were the house band for Stax. That’s where I sampled that sh*t from. Records like “ Luv of My Life” are reddish, greenish, orange. “Real Women” is clear, it’s colorless. It’s a white diamond. I sampled that from Dave Grushen and Angela Bofill . Don’t you love my range and my diversity? Quik also explains why he made the songs and the reason they were released first: Who doesn’t love John B? The last record we’ve heard him on was Tupac’s “Are You Still Down?” That’s not fair. John B means more to R&B than that, so why wouldn’t I support my brother and put him back on the radio where he belongs. It’s an ode to the women we really admire. I admire Sylvia Rhone . She’s beautiful to me. Debra Lee at BET. Cathy Hughes. We did it for women like that. Even though they’re a little out of my range, they got me in cougar town, but I still look up to fine women. Nicki Minaj ‘Really Excited’ About Britney Spears Tour

MC says she wants to ‘show people that I can be part of any world.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Chris McKay/WireImage Fans are eight weeks away from the launch of the Femme Fatale tour. Britney Spears , along with top-line tour opener Nicki Minaj, will get the party started in June in Sacramento, California. Minaj has called the slot “an honor.” When MTV News caught up with the Barbie herself in New Orleans for the latest stop on the I Am Still Music Tour , she opened up a bit more about the matchup. “She’s definitely iconic and I’m very excited,” Minaj explained. “It’s weird. I just always remember her, since I was little, ruling the world, so I’m really excited to just expand my fanbase and show people that I can be a part of any world.” Minaj is the reigning princess in the hip-hop world, and she feels that hooking up with pop’s leading queen will expand her horizons, even if she has to make some changes to her stage show. “Of course I will adjust some things. I definitely will take away that one particular stage prop,” she said of one very phallic object, adding that her music and set list will basically stay the same. “We’ll add some stuff ’cause I got some new things coming out this summer, some new records.” Earlier this week, Minaj called into Ryan Seacrest’s radio show , promising that things will be characteristically over-the-top when she hits the road with Spears. “I’m calling to let everyone know how thrilled I am, how honored I am to be going on the road with the iconic Miss Britney Spears this summer. I just know that when the Femme Fatales and the Barbs get together, we’re going to kick major ass,” she said. “And I am looking forward to creating a new, a bigger, a brighter, a more spectacular show. And I am just really, really excited to make history with Britney, so you guys, make sure you come out this summer.” Related Videos Britney Spears: I Am The Femme Fatale Related Artists Nicki Minaj Britney Spears

Nirvana Exhibit Leads Fans Through Band’s Humble Start, Meteoric Rise

‘Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses’ opens Saturday in Seattle. By Gil Kaufman Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain in the early ’90s Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage SEATTLE — It’s fitting that on Monday morning, the inside of the “Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses” exhibit at the Experience Music Project in this Northwestern music mecca looked much like the band’s music sounded: messy, splintered into 1,000 pieces, all over the place, yet somehow meticulously together and beautifully chaotic. Museum workers inside this gleaming temple to the enduring influence of the city and region’s musical heritage were in a mad scramble to get the first-of-its-kind exhibition of Nirvana artifacts into shape for Saturday’s opening. Glass display cases with spots destined to feature one-of-a-kind treasures stood empty, while others were already fitted with touchstone effects. Among them were the iconic green sweater worn by late singer Kurt Cobain in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video, the hastily drawn-up recording contract with Sub Pop Records promising the group $600 for their first album and a then-princely $12,000 for their second and a variety of smashed guitars from pivotal points in the band’s career. But curator Jacob McMurray cautioned that “Taking Punk to the Masses” is much more than a deification of already grunge-sainted late singer Cobain. “One of the things that was really important to me is that it isn’t a novel that I’m writing,” he said. “It isn’t about me or EMP, so I wanted to make sure through the oral-history quotes and the video that it’s all being told as much as possible through the primary sources.” Check out photos of Kurt Cobain’s art, broken guitars and more on exhibit. Like so many projects at the EMP, the 225-piece Nirvana show leans heavily on videotaped interviews with the musicians, producers, artists and scene-makers who contributed to and influenced the music that would, in turn, influence Nirvana. Giant iPod-like touch-pad video kiosks feature dozens of vintage posters, fanzines and artwork chronicling punk scenes from Minneapolis, Los Angeles and New York that helped set the groundwork for Nirvana, as well as more than 100 oral histories of little-known local, regional and national bands like Ze Whiz Kidz, the Tupperwares, the Lewd and U Men who stirred dozens of local future notables to take up instruments. The exhibition — which will run two years and then may tour the country — opens with a trio of images of Nirvana in their prime and spotlights one of drummer Dave Grohl’s Tama drum kits from 1993-’94, with a note about how he hit the skins so hard that he went through several kits during his tenure in the band. And though it was not yet hung, the opening space will also feature Cobain’s treasured Mosrite Gospel guitar, which he was playing at the OK Hotel show in Seattle on April 17, 1991, when he debuted “Teen Spirit” live. Bassist Krist Novoselic lives on a farm south of Seattle and is the head of his local grange hall, and the rough-hewn wooden cases for some of the displays are from a 100-year-old elm tree that fell on the grange property. McMurray bought the wood from Novoselic for use housing the items, many of which came from the private collections of Novoselic, Grohl and former drummer Chad Channing. “From grunge to grange,” McMurray laughed. There are also a series of iPod listening stations loaded with a selection of influential bands such as R.E.M., H

Taylor Lautner Calls Fighting Kristen Stewart ‘Funny’

During ‘MTV First,’ ‘Abduction’ star reveals favorite ‘Twilight’ scene. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News Despite talk inevitably turning to Taylor Lautner’s upcoming action flick “Abduction” during his Wednesday (April 13), the questions we know everyone was dying to hear answered had to do with two other big movies he has on the horizon: “Breaking Dawn: Part 1” and “Part 2.” The “Twilight” gang has been filming the final two installments of “The Twilight Saga” since the fall, so we figured it was high time we ask Lautner which was the most exciting scene to film. “It’s really hard to choose because we’re filming two movies so we’ve been filming for five months. There’s been so much we filmed,” he explained. Still, Lautner admitted that there was one scene in particular that he shot not too long ago that he was a fan of because it was unlike any other that he’s filmed with co-star Kristen Stewart. “Recently we did a scene in the backyard of the Cullen house where Bella (Stewart) gets mad at me,” he said. “She just learned that I imprinted on her daughter, and she is literally throwing me around the backyard. So it was pretty fun to see Kristen try and act all tough. She’s a vampire; she’s chucking me across the yard into trees and stuff. It was funny.” In a tease that we rolled out earlier Wednesday (April 13), Lautner told MTV News that he thinks that by the time “Breaking Dawn” ends filming, there will be plenty of waterworks across the set. “Nobody will admit it right now, but I guarantee you there will be tears,” he said.
