Chris Brown Puts His Spin On Nicki Minaj’s ‘Your Love’

Singer remixes the Young Money starlet’s hit song as he promises fans a new album in 2011. By James Dinh Chris Brown Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Despite a year of difficult career speed bumps, including his postponed U.K. promotional tour and the controversy surrounding his Michael Jackson tribute performance at the BET Awards, Chris Brown remains optimistic about getting through the rough times. His latest career move is his remix of Nicki Minaj’s hit single “Your Love,” which the singer posted on Twitter and informed fans that something special may be heading their way. “i just smashed this beat!!! UR LOVE REMIX DONE!!! for the ladies,” he tweeted early Wednesday (August 4). On the cover, Brown sings an ode to his female interest as he belts over the song’s Annie Lennox sample and hip-hop backbeats. “Shorty, I’mma tell you this once/ Girl need it (tonight)/ When I do it to you home and do it right, please believe it/ All night long, baby right now/ When you lay in my arms,” he sings during the chorus. Showing off his versatility, Breezy becomes more aggressive during the song’s second verse both vocally and lyrically as he explicitly raps, “Yeah, let me step up to the plate now/ Big kids in the room, no playground/ I wanna kiss everything from the waist down/ Keep ya ass up and your face down.” And it wouldn’t be right if Brown didn’t name-drop Minaj in the mix that praises a woman in and out of bed. “We can role-play, girl, give it to me now/ I’m giving you a massage/ A booty like Nicki Minaj/ Oh gosh,” he croons. Hours after Brown posted his remix, Nicki seemed satisfied with four different remixes of her song as she urged DJs to start spinning. “Ok DJ’s!!! 4 remixes to ‘your love’ by @rickyrozay, @duttypaul, @chrisbrown and @jaysean and they’re ALL DOPE! Play them! 🙂 #pinkfriday,” she said of her song, which currently holds the #1 spot on the Billboard Rap Songs chart . Aside from posting his cover of Minaj’s song, the singer also asked fans if they wanted another Breezy mixtape. “do yall want an “IN MY ZONE 2″!!! just a thought #inmyzone2,” he tweeted . While another mixtape isn’t certain at this point, Brown assured fans that the follow-up to last year’s Graffiti is in the works. “My new album will come next year or sooner but in the meantime i might ‘I MIGHT’ do something special for yall again!!!” he teased. Back in June, Drake said that he and Brown hit the studio together shortly after attending the 2010 BET Awards. It is unknown what, if anything, the duo cooked up, but the Young Money rapper revealed that he wanted to collaborate with others as his project was finished. “I was studio hopping, seeing where I could lend my hand to whoever’s project since I’ve done mine,” Drake said. Ke$ha Says She May Go Country ‘One Day’

‘My mom wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton,’ the Nashville-born pop singer reveals to MTV News. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: MTV News Last month, Ke$ha made headlines ( as she is wont to do these days) when she told Paper magazine that she was considering a move to country music , saying she was “really inspired” by the songs of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. On one hand, it did sort of make sense … after all, Ke$ha is from Nashville, and her mom wrote songs for some of the greatest country singers of all time. But on the other, you know, it’s Ke$ha. So, when MTV News caught up with her backstage at the Casio “Shock the World” party on Monday night, we decided to ask her about her future plans, and whether they included a countrified makeover. “I do love country music … [so] one day maybe, who knows. I don’t think I’ll stop singing until I’m dead,” she said. “I’m from Nashville and my mom wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard and I just love old-school country music, especially. I relate to it. And I also really like how most country songs tell a story, there’s a lot of storytelling and honesty involved, so I’ve taken a lot of my writing tips from country music … I mean, I’m definitely not done being a rowdy f—ing crazy bitch, but when I’m done doing that, who knows?” And, the way she sees it, the songs she wrote for her Animal album aren’t really all that far from country to begin with. At least when it comes to the whole “honesty” part of things. “The whole record is painfully, brutally honest,” she said. “Like talking about my ex-boyfriend, how he cheated on me. Idiot.” Should Ke$ha go country? Tell us what you think in the comments! Lady Gaga: From Pop Deity To Human Being, One Reality Show At A Time

Bigger Than the Sound wonders: Is Gaga the most everyman pop star around? By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Gabriel Bouys/ Getty Images By now, you are probably aware that Lady Gaga is an unstoppable moneymaking machine , an insatiable studio junkie , a high-ranking Polaroid executive , an honorary Hair Wars champion , a burgeoning fashion icon , the next Madonna , more popular than Barack Obama and quite possibly a member of the Illuminati . But, chances are, you didn’t know that she’s also a big fan of A&E’s “Intervention.” Or maybe you did. After all, she tweeted about it Tuesday, calling the show “informational, heartbreaking and inspiring.” And while the idea of Gaga sitting in a hotel room, hair done up in Diet Coke can curlers, cigarette sunglasses still smoldering on the bedside table, watching Allison huff duster (and subsequently walk on sunshine ) is rather amazing, it’s also important too. Because it’s just another step in the latest chapter of her career: her continued transformation from otherworldly pop deity into an actual human being. And perhaps I am reading entirely too much into one simple tweet about a phenomenally addictive reality show (about addiction), but now — more than at any point in her time in the spotlight — Gaga seems determined to be one of us. She chugs beer at baseball games (albeit while wearing a leather jacket and a bikini), crushes BBQ at Boston dive bars and spends her off-days in New York cooking for her dad, drinking and watching episodes of “Cops” (something she made a point of mentioning onstage at her tour kickoff in Montreal ). She spoke openly and frankly about her ex-boyfriend in an interview with Rolling Stone, and her newest song — a piano ballad called “You and I” — seems to be very much about reconciling with him, in perhaps the most un-Gaga setting imaginable: a dark and dirty bar. (It’s also worth noting that the songs sounds a whole lot like a Billy Joel B-side, and who’s more everyman than the Piano Man?) At this point, I don’t know what she could possibly do for an encore — maybe start Tivo-ing “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” or take on a disastrous adjustable-rate mortgage? — but the fact remains that right now, despite all her trappings, Gaga is probably the most openly human pop superstar on the planet (or at least the most open). Can you imagine any of her contemporaries — the Beyonc

Pete Wentz Wants Black Cards To Make ‘Global Music’

Bassist asserts that new band isn’t making reggae music, but he wants to transcend ‘cultures and borders.’ By James Montgomery Pete Wentz Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images for Digitas With each passing week, we’re seemingly learning more and more about Pete Wentz’s new Black Cards project. First, the information came in drips and drabs — a snippet or two of a song, a few sentences from Wentz about who wasn’t in the band . Then things picked up a bit, when the bass player posted a lengthy message on the Cards’ site and then revealed the identity of the band’s mysterious female singer to Rolling Stone. But for all we know, there’s still plenty we don’t. And Wentz doesn’t exactly seem like he’s in a hurry to fill in all the Black Card blanks just yet. There is one misconception about the band, however, that he couldn’t wait to clear up: Despite what he may have written in that message on the Black Cards’ site about how he was influenced by a trip to Jamaica, this definitely isn’t a reggae band. “I think it came off as though it was gonna be a reggae band … that’s not true,” he wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. “It’s a mashing together of ideas — the first few pieces we put up were more big-band/jazz/dance, [but] I don’t know how to describe it. There are a few songs that have more of a reggae swing to the beat. I think I meant that I’m interested in making global music. I like the idea of art transcending cultures and borders … [but] who knows whether I can.” Of course, Wentz ended that statement by adding that the Cards do have one song — tentatively called “Summer Nights” — that “reminds me of Montego Bay … but it’s not necessarily a reggae song though.” Despite such vague statements, Wentz swears that he’s got a plan for the Black Cards, even if it’s a pretty loose one. After spending months searching for a “quirky, British girl” to front the band, he heard unknown singer Bebe Rexha — who hails from Long Island — laying down tracks in an adjacent studio, and decided to sign her up on the spot. “Really, [the band] wasn’t even a thought in my head until it all clicked together. I didn’t really even want to talk about Black Cards until we had figured it all out,” he wrote. “The truth is we’re writing/recording about a song every week or two weeks. Now we’re just trying to beat other songs we had.” Wentz has got big ideas, for certain, but he’s still trying to figure out how — or, really, if — he’s going to be able to pull them off. And that applies to the question of whether the Cards will be taking their act on the road anytime soon. “We have to figure out exactly what is practical. To me, if and when we play shows, I want them to be events,” he wrote. “I think this music lends itself to different imagery and exhibition [more] than anything I’ve been a part of before.” Are you excited about what you know of the Black Cards so far? Amy Winehouse Says New Album Will Be Out By January

Troubled singer promises return to Back to Black sound with ‘a lot of jukebox stuff.’ By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Martin Fraser/ FilmMagic It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost four years since Amy Winehouse released her Grammy-winning breakthrough album, Back to Black. But after almost two years spent in a wilderness of drugs , divorce , serious health issues , multiple court cases and nonstop personal drama , Winehouse told London’s Metro newspaper that she’s ready to put the spotlight back on her music with a new album she hopes to have out by January. At the premiere of the film “Psychosis,” directed by new boyfriend Reg Traviss, Winehouse, 26, told Metro, “The album will be six months at the most,” noting that the sound will be similar to the retro soul on Black. “It’s going to be very much the same as my second album, where there’s a lot of jukebox stuff and the songs that are … just jukebox, really.” Though she didn’t explain what she meant by “jukebox,” Winehouse has reportedly recorded some tracks on the island of St. Lucia with producer Salaam Remi, who collaborated with her on Black. Winehouse also explained her blunder-filled performance with Mark Ronson last week at London’s 100 Club, in which she appeared to forget the lyrics to the song “Valerie,” from Ronson’s Version covers album. She told Metro that a musical mix-up caused the confusion during the gig. “Mark and I recorded two versions of ‘Valerie,’ ” she said. “We released the one that came out like the Supremes, but I play the other version with my band. When I got there, I completely forgot it was his version we were singing, so I was probably a bit out of sync. It was really fun to be onstage with him, though.” After the gig last week, Ronson said he plans to reteam with Winehouse on the new album, but was waiting until she had at least 10 songs together before hitting the studio with her. In the meantime, they have recorded one song together for an upcoming tribute to music legend Quincy Jones. While her live show has often been iffy at best in the past, Winehouse said she’s excited to have a wider repertoire to choose from when she starts touring for the new album. “I just can’t wait to have some new songs onstage, really.” Winehouse’s spokesperson confirmed to MTV News that the singer is working on new material but said no official release date has been set. Though visa issues appear to be currently holding her up, Winehouse is also reportedly planning to record songs for a supergroup album with the Roots’ drummer, ?uestlove, and Remi. While the group doesn’t have a name yet, ?uest said he plans to sit down and talk with Winehouse soon about laying down some tracks. Are you excited about a new Amy Winehouse album? Nicki Minaj Promises Debut Album Will Drop This Year

‘The album is coming along just spectacular,’ she tells MTV News of yet-untitled project. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj’s style is full of theatrical flourishes, from her candy-colored wigs to the animated faces she makes when she spits her rhymes. But the Young Money MC said her debut will introduce audiences to the woman behind the persona. “The album is coming along just spectacular,” Minaj told MTV News. “I been doing a lot of work with Swizz [Beatz], and the stuff that we been coming upon is magical. When people hear the album, they’re going to get to know Onika [her birth name is Onika Maraj]. And no one knows Onika. I really didn’t think I would be this excited about the songs that I’m coming up with. I’m really, really proud.” The Lil Wayne prot

Eminem’s Recovery Goes Platinum, Stays Healthy At #1

Drake’s Thank Me Later holds onto Billboard #2, while ‘Eclipse’ soundtrack jumps up to #3 with movie’s release. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage He may not have crossed the platinum plateau in his first week on shelves, but Eminem cruised past it in the second week, as Recovery moved another 313,000 copies to hold on to the #1 spot on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart. Despite a 58 percent sales dip, Slim Shady bested all comers with his latest, as his two-week total went up over 1 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was more than enough to keep beating Drake ‘s Thank Me Later, which sold 105,000 copies for a three-week total just shy of 709,000 and the #2 slot on the chart. And after “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” smashed box-office records last week, the soundtrack moves up seven spots to #3 (65,000, up 69 percent). The only newcomers in the top 10 are which lands at #4 in its first week (58,000) and Warped Tour rappers 3OH!3 , whose Streets of Gold comes in at #7 (41,000). The rest of the top 10 is made of familiar faces: the NOW 34 collection (#5, 45,000), Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#6, 41,000), Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea (#8, 35,000), Miley Cyrus ‘ Can’t Be Tamed (dropping six spots to #9 as sales tailed off by 68 percent to 32,000) and Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#10, 30,000). Further down the line, disco revivalists Scissor Sisters debut at #18 with Night Work (18,000), and the score for “Eclipse” is close behind at #20 (17,000). The march down the charts continues for Christina Aguilera ‘s Bionic , which falls another 10 spots in its fourth week on the charts, dropping to #32 on sales of 12,000 for a one-month total of just under 182,000. Indie faves Wolf Parade land at #48 with Expo 86 (8,000), and punk survivor Alejandro Escovedo , with a little help from Bruce Springsteen , debuts at #101 with Street Songs of Love (5,000). Over on the iTunes charts, Eminem holds onto #1 on the album tally, with the “Eclipse” soundtrack surging up six spots to #2, followed by Drake, 3OH!3, The-Dream, Johnson, Scissor Sisters, the “Eclipse” score, Hillsong Live ‘s A Beautiful Exchange and the Roots’ How I Got Over . The recent releases by Cyrus, Ozzy Osbourne , Sarah McLachlan and B.o.B have all been knocked out of the top 10. Though iTunes doesn’t provide sales data, suffice it to say that Katy Perry ‘s “California Gurls” is hanging strong on the singles list, knocking Slim Shady out of the #1 spot he held last week with his Rihanna duet, “Love the Way You Lie.” Taio Cruz has to settle for moving up six spots to #3 with “Dynamite,” followed by B.o.B’s “Airplanes, Travie McCoy ‘s “Billionaire,” Mike Posner ‘s “Cooler Than Me” and Jason DeRulo ‘s “Ridin’ Solo.” The singles chart is filled out by Eminem again at #8 with “Not Afraid,” Usher at #9 with “OMG” and Drake’s “Find Your Love” at #10. Look for chart debuts next week from Big Boi, Kelis , Enrique Iglesias and Kylie Minogue .
