Christina Aguilera: What Should Her Next Move Be?

After soft first-week sales for Bionic, experts weigh in. By James Montgomery Photo: Ronald Martinez/ Getty Images Between the unexpectedly soft first-week sales for her comeback album, Bionic, constant criticism from Perez Hilton and a barrage of Lady Gaga comparisons , it hasn’t been an easy few weeks for Christina Aguilera. While the negative press is nothing new (remember the public outcry over her explicit “Dirrty” video? ), the less-than-stellar album sales, controversy over her sexed-up “Not Myself Tonight” video and the recent postponement of her tour are not adding up well. So what should she do next? We decided to pose the question to some experts, all of whom seem to agree that Aguilera has bucketloads of talent — but also has her work cut out for her. “She’s still under 30, she still has a fantastic voice, but I think her time has passed. I don’t know if it’s because she went away for a while, or because she tried to do something different with this project, but it feels a little crass and calculated,” Entertainment Weekly music critic Leah Greenblatt said. “From her choice of collaborators [The-Dream, Polow Da Don, Le Tigre] to her first single, it doesn’t feel fully organic. What’s missing so much with her this time out is that, while she can still sing the crap out of her songs, you don’t get a sense of vulnerability, or even really know who she is.” “She just seems a little confused, and that’s not like her, and it’s not what we want from her,” Julianne Shepherd, executive editor of The Fader magazine, added. “The image she’s been projecting, she just doesn’t seem comfortable doing it. She’s always done vamping, but now it’s like ‘I’m wearing these insane PVC outfits and singing to this music that I don’t relate to.’ No matter what she says, I don’t see her sitting around listening to old trance records.” Both agreed that Aguilera should essentially do her — focus on putting out the kind of songs that showcase her strengths — and stop chasing her competitors. “I think honestly, she’s trying to be a little too Gaga, and it’s not working for her,” Shepherd said. “She’s such a talented singer that she doesn’t need to do what everyone else is doing. It just seems too forced and too in the mold of the Gagas and the Rihannas of the world.” “She’s very much into the concept of ‘the future’ on this album, but the first single doesn’t sound like the future: It sounds like a song they’d play in a spin class, circa 1998,” Greenblatt said. “When you look at the other girls on the pop charts, it doesn’t feel fresh. It’s not compelling enough to pull herself away from the field. If you look at something like Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls,’ it’s a retro song, but it’s fun. There’s a heaviness to the Christina album. She may say she’s having fun, but you don’t believe her.” Both Greenblatt and Shepherd singled out the M.I.A. collaboration “Elastic Love” as a potential game-changer, a song that perhaps best sums up whatever it was Aguilera was hoping to achieve on Bionic, and one that might reinvigorate a public that’s grown tired of more of the same old pop. And both added that Christina should get back to basics (the title of her last album, as it happens), or maybe line up a new collaboration or two. “She’s got to re-calibrate her image, like do a fun video that treats sexuality as a garnish, not the entire meal,” Greenblatt said. “If she reins herself in and releases the right single, things might be OK. There are plenty of artists who hit it big with the second, third single, and she’s definitely big enough for that to happen here. People want her to succeed, she just needs to give us an iteration of herself that people like.” “I think that, maybe if she steps back a bit, tries to ease our of where she’s going, and trusts herself more, she will probably be okay. I think it’s just a bump in the road,” Shepherd added. “Or maybe she should collaborate with all of Young Money. That would probably work too.” What do you think Christina Aguilera’s next move should be? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Christina Aguilera

Atheists Don’t Have No Songs [video]

This video was filmed at the recent 2010 New Orleans Jazzfest. It features a silly song, “Atheists Don't Have No Songs,” performed by Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers. I think atheists need to fix this little problem (not having any songs) don't you? added by: GrrlScientist

Green Day Got Proudly ‘Pwned’ At Their Own ‘Rock Band’

‘I couldn’t even finish the song,’ Tre Cool laughs to MTV News. By James Montgomery Green Day Photo: MTV News Through all the “Green Day: Rock Band”-related stories about dye jobs and song selections we’ve written this week, there remains one topic we haven’t explored yet. And, to be honest, it’s a fairly pertinent one: Are the guys in Green Day actually good at playing their game? You would think the answer would be yes, considering they wrote the songs and all. But, oddly, you’d be wrong. “Well I did an interactive thing with some random ‘Rock Band’ players all throughout the world, and I got my ass kicked really bad,” drummer Tre Cool laughed. “I couldn’t even finish the song.” “Tre got pwned,” bassist Mike Dirnt laughed. “I did! I got pwned!” Cool shrugged. “Pwned like a newb.” So while they might not be great at the game, at least the guys in Green Day are all pros when it comes to gamer lingo. But what, exactly, was it about the game that they found so difficult? “For me, it’s really hard. I think I’d rather play the guitar on the game. The drums are really hard,” Cool said. “But what’s cool about the kit that you get is, you can put it on free-play mode and the practice mode, and you’ve got an electric drum set. So it’s kind of cool.” “That’s actually really cool,” Dirnt added. And the electric drum set has an added feature, one “Rock Band” developers probably never even dreamed of: the power to annoy. “You can jam around in your living room and piss off the neighbors,” Cool smiled. “Like I care about pissing off the neighbors.” MTV News is celebrating the release of “Green Day: Rock Band” with a week of special coverage. Eminem Talks Lil Wayne, Rihanna And Pink Recovery Collabos

‘Wayne, to me, is definitely one of the greatest in the game right now,’ Em says during French radio interview. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images The elusive Eminem spoke to Skyrock Radio in Paris over the weekend and offered a tiny peek at what he has in store for his upcoming Recovery album . While most of the interview consisted of Em cracking jokes with the French DJs, he did briefly touch on hooking up with the incarcerated Lil Wayne on “No Love,” as well as Pink on “Won’t Back Down” and Rihanna on “Love the Way You Lie.” “I’ve always respected what Wayne does, and Wayne, to me, is definitely one of the greatest in the game right now,” he said of Weezy, who is in the midst of a yearlong prison stretch on gun charges. “As far as the songs with Pink and Rihanna … when I did the song that I did with Pink, I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record and felt that she would smash this record. And the other one I did with Rihanna is one of those tracks that I felt like only she could pull it off, only she could do it.” He also dropped the first hints about what the video for lead single “Not Afraid” might look like. Promising that it was coming soon (he mentioned “Saturday” but didn’t go into any other detail), Shady said, “The video is … kind of just … there’s a lot of things in it that are metaphorically speaking. There are things that are symbolic in the video. … The overall concept is basically being in a dark place and trying to get to the light.” Among the topics he touched on were 50 Cent slimming down for his upcoming role in “Things Fall Apart,” in which he plays a cancer-stricken football player. “That’s crazy,” Shady said when talk turned to 50’s shocking weight loss. While trying to find out more French cuss words in order to hit on a comely lady named Marie in the studio, Slim Shady deferred to longtime manager Paul Rosenberg when pressed about why the rapper did not make France one of his three tour stops on his upcoming European swing. The interview ended with Em expressing mystification over why people are so excited about soccer’s upcoming World Cup, a stance that might mean he’ll have some ‘splaining to do when he hits the stages in football-crazy Switzerland and the U.K. in July. “Is it politically incorrect if I said I didn’t like soccer?” he asked. “I’m not a big soccer fan.” Were you surprised by Eminem’s Recovery collaborators? Crystal Bowersox And The Amazing Metaphorical Dreamcoat

‘American Idol’ runner-up is determined to push the envelope even farther than Adam Lambert did, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox Crystal Bowersox stood just off camera, looking slightly perturbed. A publicist tugged on the zipper of her brand-new leather jacket, a fashionably cut, butter-soft thing that had been given to her as a gift, presumably after finishing second on “American Idol.” It was a very nice jacket. The problem was with the zipper. “Man, you would think this thing would work better,” Bowersox said to no one in particular, tugging on the tab, sticking her fingers in the metal teeth of the contraption. “If people want to give me nice stuff, that’s cool. I’m going to Goodwill.” Ultimately, she and her publicist managed to force the zipper three-quarters of the way up the jacket, Bowersox smiled, sat down, and our interview began. At the time, it seemed like little more than an inconsequential wardrobe matter — and maybe it still is — but in retrospect, the situation seems to have taken on added meaning, at least for me. It was, after all, a pretty handy (not to mention fashionable ) metaphor for Bowersox’s entire life, post-“Idol.” She’s not exactly comfortable with this newfound fame, and you get the feeling that the zipper’s just gonna keep on sticking, but she’ll be damned if she’s not going to keep forcing the thing up. Because over the next 40-something minutes, Bowersox seemingly delighted in making it clear to me that she was “a fighter,” someone hell-bent on forging her own career path — her own songs, her own sound, her own way — despite overwhelming evidence that what she wants might very well be impossible (see the post-show bows of folks like Allison Iraheta or Diana DeGarmo for proof of this). She hasn’t even begun recording her first album, but she already knows how she doesn’t want it to sound: like an “American Idol” album. “I’d like to do the songs that I’ve been doing for years. … I’m not opposed to working with other writers and producers, but my goal is to put out an album I really enjoy,” she said. “I’m aware of it, I’m a fighter, I’m a passionate person, I believe in certain things very strongly and I don’t go down easy. I’ll take everything into consideration, but it’s my CD, it’s my music. I’m not going to put something out that I’m not proud of.” And that’s the tip of the iceberg. Bowersox said she doesn’t care about money or fame (“I have everything I need in my life right now. I don’t need a fancy house, big cars or bling or anything like that. My son’s healthy, and life is good”), doesn’t see the point of keeping her private life private, and not only freely admits to Googling herself, but reading the nasty comments too (“It gives you the outside perspective you don’t get within the ‘Idol’ bubble”). She rarely watches television. She thinks kids should read more books. She is blissfully unaware of the cultural import of Justin Bieber (“He was on the show, right?”). Oh, and she maintained that, despite what her “Idol” handlers might say, she plans to speak out against things that she deems are unjust. Because she wants to use her fame to bring about change. In other words, Bowersox is probably the least “American Idol” contestant in “American Idol” history: a willful, delightfully stubborn throwback to a bygone era when music meant something and musicians stood up for their beliefs. Sure, Adam Lambert may have spat out the “Idol” ball gag — or, you know, used it in his American Music Awards performance — but Bowersox seems determined to make his bid for independence seem positively childish. She’s focused on bigger things than just shock and awe: She really, truthfully wants to be an individual, a singular star, and she wants it on her terms only. Of course, whether she succeeds in that endeavor is largely up to her. Is she strong enough to stay on her own path, to fight off the creeping insurgence of her “Idol” handlers and to still remain unchanged by fame? Is she willing to keep tugging on that zipper, no matter how uncomfortable things get? I wouldn’t bet against her. But whatever happens, one thing’s for certain: After meeting Bowersox, I can safely say I never knew anybody like her at the juice bar, despite what I may have written more than a month ago in this very column. No one had a jacket as nice as hers. Metaphorical or not. Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com . Related Photos Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience

Miley Cyrus Hates on Glee

In a recent interview with Billboard , Miley Cyrus made it clear she loves her own music . But the singer also opened up about something she hates, in a rambling, nonsensical way. Asked about the Fox smash Glee , Miley said: “Honestly, musicals? I just can’t. What if this was real life and I was just walking down the street on Rodeo Drive and all of a sudden I just burst into song about how much I love shoes?” She then paused, laughed and patted herself on the back, saying: “It would get you hits on YouTube.” Ah, classic Miley: not giving credit to another musical sensation, and also pointing out just how popular she is with that YouTube comment. Someone should probably tells Cyrus that maybe she “can’t” handle musicals, but over 13 million people can. They tune in to Glee each week. So, is there any musician out there Miley does respect? Lady Gaga, she says. “Unlike a lot of artists, all her music does mean something personally.” Do you wanna tell Miley that Gaga recently said it was a dream come true to have her songs covered by Glee ? Or should we relay that message instead?

Lady Gaga on Glee Episode: AHHH!

Glee paid tribute to Lady Gaga Tuesday. Perhaps you heard. Critics and fans loved the Fox show’s episode, which drew praise from the often-imitated, never duplicated (sorry, Christina Aguilera ) star as well. “I love Glee ,” the singer told EW . “I went to a musical theatre school, and used to dream that someday the students would be singing my songs.” Gaga also posted on Twitter about the Glee episode, called “Theatricality,” summing her feelings up simply: “GLEE WAS SO AMAZING! AHHH!!!!” Pretty much the exact reaction of our critic’s Glee review . Lady Gaga: Glee’s #1 fan. [Photo: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] This week’s episode saw New Directions do just that, when the club’s female vocalists, and Kurt, donned some of Gaga’s most memorable looks. They proceeded to rock the house with “Bad Romance.” But it was Rachel’s duet with Shelby of “Poker Face” what stole the show a little later on. “I don’t channel Lady Gaga,” cast member and Broadway veteran Idina Menzel said of tackling the showstopper. “I’m just in awe of Lady Gaga.” That’s high praise, but well-earned. Here’s hoping that Gaga’s health problems improve and she returns to the stage in short, awesome order.
