Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox Are ‘Thinking’ About Winning ‘Idol’

‘I might hoot and holler or something,’ Crystal says of Wednesday’s finale. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze at the “American Idol” press conference Tuesday Photo: MTV News After 44 episodes, dozens of performances and a countless memorable moments, there’s nothing left but the celebration. On Tuesday, after Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze each powered through three impressive songs for season nine’s final performance episode of “American Idol,” the last pair standing contemplated the end of their incredible ride. “I’m proud of what I’ve done,” DeWyze told a gaggle of reporters during a press conference after the live show. “We both put it out there all season, and I know confidence has been a big thing with me, but I feel pretty good.” DeWyze said that he hadn’t fully contemplated the prospect of winning, though it was something on his mind. “It would be amazing [to win],” he said. “But thinking about winning … we did everything we can up to this point. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about it. The first thing I’m going to do when I go home tonight is think about it. But what can you do? You put everything out there and you hope for the best, which is what I’m going to do.” Bowersox shared a similar sentiment and seemed just as excited to find out who the winner would be as the audience. “I think throughout the season, people have been maybe disappointed in my lack of big reactions to things. I’m just a mellow person,” she said. “But I’m personally interested to see how I react tomorrow. I don’t know. I might hoot and holler or something.” Whether or not Bowersox will hoot and holler in victory or defeat will be decided on Wednesday night, when the results show of the “American Idol” finale airs live at 8 p.m. on Fox. ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Crystal Climbs The Mountain

Lee DeWyze couldn’t reclaim the confidence he’d found last week. By Jim Cantiello Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX Tuesday night’s “American Idol” marked the beginning of the end of season nine, with Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze facing off in a three-round showdown. OK, it was less of a showdown and more of a beatdown, with Bowersox easily handing DeWyze his hat. Although Lee was the favorite going into this week, his newfound confidence must have been left at the door of the Nokia Theatre. (Even the mice at the Nokia Theatre had to have been saying to each other, “What’s this wimp’s problem tonight?”) In round one, each contestant reprised an old “Idol” hit, but the rule was that they were not allowed to sing it as well the second time. (Kidding. Except I’m not.) It turned into a battle of the gibberish, and the la-di-dahs of “The Boxer” lost out to the la-di-dahs of “Me and Bobby McGee” by a nose. Simon Fuller got to pick the songs in round two. DeWyze started R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” strong but got lost in the middle, and Bowersox sang “Black Velvet” with some grit but got lost on the stairs of the set. (Why couldn’t she find her way around Tuesday night? During her entrance from the audience she looked as though she was confused too.) Finally, round three was where Lee and Crystal each debuted what would be their first single should they win. With “Beautiful Day,” DeWyze told America he wants to be the lead singer of a U2 cover band. With “Up to the Mountain,” Crystal told America she wants to be the next American Idol. Will MamaSox’s stellar showing be enough to win her the crown? Will Lee’s triumphant top-three showing be fresh enough in voters’ minds to forgive the fact that he choked this week? Did you think Crystal’s message to Simon was a sweet sendoff or an awkward example of brownnosing? Leave a comment below. Stone Temple Pilots Traded Control For Democracy On New Album

‘We needed to learn how to be in a band again,’ Scott Weiland says of recording process. By James Montgomery Photo: MTV News After nearly a decade out in the wilderness — a time spent releasing solo albums, forming new bands and getting arrested once or twice — the Stone Temple Pilots return to their musical home on Tuesday (May 25) with their self-titled sixth album. The roiling, rumbling, hard-rocking release recalls the band’s late-’90s glory years, while also forging a new sonic territory, one that’s awfully indebted to Let It Bleed -era Rolling Stones. Yes, it’s a brand-new era for STP. It kicked off on a high note with a well-received run of shows earlier this year and continues today with a single, “Between the Lines,” that’s burning up the Modern Rock Radio charts. But, to hear the band tell it, this new era almost didn’t happen. There was a time not too long ago when Stone Temple Pilots seemed like they were done forever. “We produced this album ourselves, but we had some help from Don Was,” frontman Scott Weiland told MTV News. “It came at a point where we were sort of stuck, and he was great. … He got us all together and had us play the songs live. And that was important. We had been doing our own thing for so long, we needed to learn how to be in a band again. “Making a solo album is kind of easy,” Weiland continued. “Being in a democracy is difficult, because everyone has their own ideas, and you have to be able to respect those ideas. So making a solo album, or these guys doing what they’ve done on the outside, it’s like, you get a lot more control; you do what you want to do. And sometimes those things need to be done in order for a band to get back together and appreciate what it’s all about.” And that joy of reconnecting is readily apparent on the band’s sixth album. There’s a sense of the band rediscovering their old magic (like on “Between the Lines”), while also trusting one another enough to push the boundaries (the bluesy stomp of tracks like “Huckleberry Crumble” or “Hickory Dichotomy,” the Country leanings of album closer “Maver”). The delicate balance that required STP to embrace their past — warts and all — and look boldly forward too. There were some stumbles, but once they found their footing, everything else simply fell into place. “We’ve all been trying to get away from the guy in the mirror for quite some time now … but when it comes down to it, we’re all kind of the same,” guitarist Dean DeLeo said. “I was just laughing about this with a friend of mine, and I was like, ‘You know, we all still laugh at the same old things, and still kind of dig the same sorts of fashion and music.’ And it’s like, ‘Are we going to be 70-year-old guys still laughing at the same old things, and driving down the same old streets and going to the same old bars?’ I don’t know. I suppose we’re creatures of habit in that respect, but I’m pretty comfortable doing it.” “I think the older that we’ve gotten, we’ve kind of gone back more to our roots, the Beatles and Stones and Zeppelin … but there’s still that urgency to step outside your comfort zone and write a song like ‘Maver,’ ” Weiland added. “That’s why we’ve had such a long career; we never ape ourselves. We don’t want to steal from ourselves. I think that everything we’ve done in between has added to what we are right now.” Which era of Stone Temple Pilots is your favorite? Lee DeWyze’s Friends Reveal ‘American Idol’ Finalist’s Improv Skills

‘He’ll look at the pool table and sing a song about it,’ Brian Friedopfer tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Brian Friedopfer, Lee DeWyze’s Friend Photo: MTV News We’ve gotten to know Lee DeWyze, 24, a bit on “American Idol” this season. We’ve learned that he struggled a bit in high school, used to work at a paint store and that he can make even an old “Idol” chestnut like “Hallelujah” feel brand-new again . But the one thing nobody has talked about, that his friends and family say is actually one of Lee’s strongest skills, is his ability to improvise lyrics on the spot. There’s not really room on the show to freestyle, but if you believe his karaoke pal Brian Friedopfer, 27, Lee can throw down off the top of the dome with the best of them. “He always had [his guitar] in his car or if we were at a bar during the summer … he’ll bust it out [and] we’ll have sing-a-longs. Everybody would be doing harmonies. He’ll make up lyrics on the spot,” Friedopfer recalled. “It’s crazy. He’ll sing a song about a bottle of beer, about anything. He’ll look at the pool table and sing a song about it. … I don’t think you’re going to have the ability to see it on the show, unfortunately.” DeWyze’s sister, Sarah DeWyze-Salas, 26, said Lee would show off his on-the-spot skills during family vacations as well. “Every year, we used to go on vacation, [and] we would sit around the campfire, and he would go, one-by-one, just making up something about us,” she recalled during a viewing party in support of the onetime high school hell-raiser in his hometown last week. “He’s always been really, really good at making things up and having fun with us.” His old boss at Mt. Prospect Paint, Bill Lagattolla, told a similar tale, recalling that on slow Sundays, Lee would bring in his guitar and jam, making up new words to old songs or riffing off of customers and co-workers in the store and making up lyrics to improvised jams to pass the time. During his senior year at Forest View Alternative school, assistant dean Dave Winsauer said Lee used his unique skills to make a long class trip down to Atlanta much more bearable. “I brought my guitar and … Lee played the guitar in the van most of the way down there, and … he would just start playing a blues riff or something like that and start making up songs about the different kids in the van or me,” Winsauer laughed. “He was great. He was hilarious.” In fact, DeWyze was so good at making up songs on the spot, Winsauer tried to get the teenager to try out for the famous Second City comedy troupe in Chicago to see if he could motivate the budding singer/songwriter to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. Another friend, Mike Corsi, 27, who met DeWyze in high school detention more than nine years ago, said in addition to being a decent beatboxer (watch out, Blake Lewis ), Lee could riff a song off anything he saw. “You would talk to him, and you would start telling a story, and then he’d cut you off and sing a song about yourself,” Corsi said. “I’m a deli manager for Jewel-Osco food stores, and I would be talking to him, and then all of a sudden he’d be like, ‘In the deli!’ ” before taking off and singing a few free-association verses about his friend’s supermarket gig. That talent also came in handy when the perpetually broke twosome would go hang out at a local Denny’s and not even have enough change to buy coffee. “Lee would be in the back booth playing his songs, and they just kind of let it go,” he said, alluding to an unspoken free-coffee-for-fresh-tunes quid pro quo.
