Drake Says He’s On A Remix Of Lil Wayne’s ‘I’m Single’

‘I tried to slither my way on that record,’ Young Money MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Sway Calloway Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Holla at the champs — your boys have finally decided to get it in on Twitter, so shout us out at @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Let’s have dialogue and check for exclusives. Big up to Wiz Khalifa’s army, the Taylor Gang, who have been hitting us up about the mixtape Kush and Orange Juice by @RealWizKhalifa . We got something all the Taylors will be interested in real soon. Now, down to business — we recently brought you clarified word that Lil Wayne appears on Drake’s June 15 LP Thank Me Later via the track “Miss Me.” But there’s more Wayne and Drake in the can. Drizzy sings on a remix of Wayne’s No Ceilings jam “I’m Single.” Drake was so enamored with the record, he wanted to get on the hook. That version is nestled in the Young Money vaults. “I love that song,” Drake told us earlier this week. “I love that song. 40 produced that record for Wayne. I did that a while ago. I love that song. It’s one of those songs I wish was my song. I tried to slither my way on that record. I called Tez like, ‘Tez, let me get on that hook.’ There’s a version with me on it. I don’t know if it’s gonna get out there. Music is someone else’s creation. Once it’s done, it’s hard to say I wanna be a part of it. But me and Wayne, I get excited when Wayne wants to be on one of my songs. Musically we share that. We like doing songs together. I don’t think it’s a bad thing when we do songs together. … So there’s definitely a version with me on it. But that song is amazing on its own.” As for “Miss Me,” Drake said it’s “straightforward.” “It’s a pretty straightforward [song],” Drake said. “It’s a song about being away from what you love and hoping that when you’re gone, doing you, somebody out there misses you. It goes for Wayne in his situation and it goes for me in my situation, ’cause I’m on the road for I don’t how long right now.” The video for the version of “I”m Single” that appears on No Ceilings debuts this Sunday on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Sunday” countdown and on MTV Jams as the Jam of the Week. “The thing with Wayne, if you don’t get a chance to see how hard he worked on the record and the wit and pizazz he had with it, he wants to give you that same feeling the first time you hear it,” said DJ Scoob Doo, who directed the video. “Which he does audio-wise, but him performing it for you in the studio is really what it’s about, as far as this video.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . The Young Veins’ Take A Vacation!: The Joke’s On You

Ryan Ross and Jon Walker emerge from Panic! at the Disco with a crackling new album, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Young Veins Photo: One Haven Music Last month, as I stood in a half-filled Austin, Texas, dive bar watching Ryan Ross, Jon Walker and the rest of the Young Veins fumble and fuss with their vintage guitars and organs, I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for them. When Ross’ girlfriend (the Like’s Elizabeth “Z” Berg) began crawling around onstage, attempting to hook up her guitar pedals for him — because, as Ross would tell me later, he had “forgotten” his — I somehow felt a lot worse. After all, this was Ryan Ross, the same kid I had watched stalk the stage at a sold-out (and very loud) arena in 2006 , the same brilliant boy-child who had written one of my favorite albums of 2008 . I had such high hopes for him. The sky truly seemed like it was the limit. But then, he left Panic! at the Disco , posed precariously close to a plate of well-manicured cocaine in a now-infamous photo and disappeared into the hills of Hollywood with Walker to work on a record that would presumably never see the light of day. Either Ross was getting truly terrible career advice, or he had fallen victim to the same thing that had snared so many before him: ego. He had believed the hype, had squandered all that potential and this Austin gig — and a thousand more just like it — would be his penance. It was, for all intents and purposes, over for him. Only, here’s the thing. While the Veins’ set that night wasn’t particularly excellent — it was, after all, only their third show to date — there was something there: a buoyant, playful charm and a jovial jolt, even if the guitars didn’t sound all that great and Ross’ voice got buried in the mix way too often. This didn’t feel the least bit like a funeral — quite the opposite, in fact. Ross and Walker cracked jokes and exchanged wry smiles, exuding the same vibe I got from them toward the end of Panic!’s lifespan . It was, in some small way, like they were still playing an arena (albeit an arena that smelled like beer) and that they were privy to a very secret joke, one they weren’t quite sure they wanted to share with the world. Needless to say, I left the gig feeling a bit puzzled. But a few weeks later, back in New York and thoroughly deodorized, I finally understood what they were laughing about: I received an advance copy of the Veins’ debut album, Take a Vacation! (due June 8), a crackling, lightning-quick effort — 11 songs in just 29 minutes — that’s equal parts salty and sweet, heavily indebted to the past, unbelievably catchy and quite possibly the best joke you’ll hear all year. In other words, it’s pretty much everything I could ask for in a rock record, and then some. Working with producers Rob Mathes and Alex Greenwald (formerly of Phantom Planet), Ross and Walker have made an album that is totally, 100 percent theirs. Holed up in Calabasas, California, they listened to a ton of old 45s, probably smoked some funny cigarettes, watched the sun rise, made bonfires in the hills, invited all their friends over to sing on the choruses and cranked out songs that bear no resemblance to the rock music of today (and, by logical extension, have positively no chance of getting played on modern rock radio). They took the parts of Panic! at the Disco’s last album that fans liked least — the strummy, sunny, really excellent ones (“Northern Downpour,” etc.) — and made an entire record of them. And they did this all basically because they wanted to. It’s their own private joke (or their own private psychedelic reel ), one they eventually decided to share with the world. Buy only after they were good and ready to. And that’s probably what I like most about Vacation! — the fact that it’s deeply personal, important mostly to Ross and Walker. These are the songs they’ve wanted to write, even while the other half of Panic! seemed headed in the opposite direction. And so, they left the band and did their own thing. Repercussions and public opinion be damned. There are plenty of great musical moments too — the “aah-aah-aahs” and undeniable chorus of “Cape Town,” the enchantment-under-the-sea-worthy ballad “Everyone but You,” the campy stomp of “The Young Veins (Die Tonight),” smoky and ebullient album-closer “Heart of Mine” — but it’s that dogged determination to do their own thing, even if it means a lifetime of fumbling with vintage guitars in Texas dive bars that stands out most to me. It’s like Ross sings on “Other Girl,” just before the tune breaks out in a stony, sunrise-approved guitar solo: “You were right, I was wrong/ Like I always am, and you always are.” There are probably a million people he could be directing the line toward, only you know he doesn’t really care about any of them. He’s fumbling and stumbling to the beat of his own drummer now. Who cares about the future when you’ve got the past? Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com .

‘American Idol’ Elvis Week: What Should The Contestants Sing?

‘Idol’ brings back the songs of Elvis Presley for the first time since season 5. By Eric Ditzian “American Idol” top 9 Photo: FOX “American Idol” resurrected its seventh-season Lennon/McCartney theme for last week’s broadcast. On Tuesday (April 13), “Idol” is bringing back the musical stylings of Elvis Presley for the first time since season five. Back in 2006, eventual champ Taylor Hicks busted out “Jailhouse Rock,” runner-up Katharine McPhee’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” landed her in the bottom two and Chris Daughtry’s “Suspicious Minds” got him voted off the show. This time around, will recent judges’ save Michael Lynche calm the “Suspicious Minds” of voters? Will Tim Urban stand up and tell the judges, “Don’t Be Cruel”? Which “Idol” hopeful is headed straight for “Heartbreak Hotel”? Let’s take a look at which tunes we’d like the contestants to sing on Tuesday’s show. Crystal Bowersox Is there any way to integrate a theremin into an arrangement of an Elvis tune? No doubt there is, but let’s hope MamaSox — and, for that matter, Lee Dewyze — leaves the oddball instruments backstage this week and gives her vocals top billing instead. To that end, we want to see Crystal go minimalist, returning to her gal-with-a-guitar roots — ’cause those are beautiful roots! Before the King turned “I Don’t Care if the Sun Don’t Shine” into a jaunty hit, Patti Page delivered a sultry version of the tune. Using her version as inspiration, and replacing horns with her acoustic strumming, Bowersox would knock ’em dead after two straight so-so performances. Lee Dewyze Dewyze’s finest performance of the live shows was his R&B Week take on Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose’s “Treat Her Like a Lady”: a full-throated rock version that had us finally seeing why the judges were so enamored of the guy. We want to see more of the same. Dewyze should take Elvis’ swinging “A Mess of Blues,” tamp down on the rhythm-and-blues verve, electrify the whole thing and ask every single member of the “Idol” house band to pitch in with the effort. Just don’t invite the dude with the bagpipes back, OK? Siobhan Magnus Two words: “Hound Dog.” Seriously. Magnus is at her best when she’s making out-of-nowhere choices and presenting them in unexpected ways. The 19-year-old Cape Cod native should grind this tune to a near halt, focus on its bluesy center, and deliver a dark, smoky take on this 50+-year-old classic. Michael Lynche Big Mike is going to have to bust out a scorcher, lest he follow in the footsteps of last year’s judges’ savee, Matt Giraud, and be voted off for a second straight week. Lynche possesses one of the season’s most powerful, expressive instruments, and we suggest he put it to good use with “Heartbreak Hotel.” Mind you, Presley’s 1956 #1 hit comes with its share of pitfalls, including the possibility of having Simon Cowell compare you to a soused karaoke crooner. To avoid that fate, Big Mike should go for a more flowing arrangement over which his vocals can rise and fall. Casey James The easy pick here would be “Jailhouse Rock,” but that’s what Hicks performed in ’06, and even though he won the season, James should really not follow any example set by the captain of the Soul Patrol. Rather, we see an upbeat, electric-guitar-heavy take on “A Big Hunk o’ Love” or “Mystery Train” as the perfect fit. After the slow-burning “Jealous Guy” last week, it’s time for some straightforward rock from Goldilocks. Katie Stevens Last week’s “Let It Be” pulled Stevens out of the bottom three after two straight trips to that dreaded territory. How to build on that success? Stay with an ultra-recognizable ballad: “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” The worry here is that the judges won’t view the 17-year-old’s rendition as believable. But if she sings with even half the emotion she did last week, that shouldn’t be too much of a concern. Aaron Kelly After weeks of sleepy ballads leading up to last week’s bottom-three-inducing “The Long and Winding Road,” Kelly would be wise to skip something like “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and go in for a lively tune on Tuesday. Not too lively, of course, which is why “Suspicious Minds” would work well. Pay no mind to the fate of Daughtry. The song’s kind of corny, but everyone loves it nonetheless. Kind of like Kelly himself, come to think of it. Andrew Garcia Garcia is the most confounding contestant of the season. Were we wrong to think he was a contender? It hardly matters at this point. He’ll be gone from the “Idol” stage soon enough, and until then, we’ll keep encouraging him to select the poppiest tune possible for each week’s theme, hoping to catch a little of the magic we heard back during Hollywood Week. Presley’s “All Shook Up” is a fun, high-energy ditty, and if Garcia isn’t going to wow us anymore, the least he can do is take us for an enjoyable minute-and-a-half ride. Tim Urban The dimpled wonderboy finally escaped the bottom three last week on the strength of his not-completely-awful “All My Loving.” We suggest more of the same: the King’s 1956 hit “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.” The slow tempo won’t ask too much of Urban and the lyrics can be directed right at those teen girls voting for him every week: He wants them, he needs them, he loves them. 30 Seconds To Mars Call Into The Wild Tour ‘A New Beginning’

‘It’s a massive celebration for us and our fans,’ Jared Leto says. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: EMI Music They just wrapped their first-ever run of arena shows in Europe, shot a combat-themed music video for “This Is War” and kicked off the U.S. leg of their Into the Wild tour . So why, with so much forward momentum, does Jared Leto consider everything 30 Seconds to Mars are doing to be a gigantic step back to square one? “I’ve said this before, but the most exciting thing about being in this band right now, is that it feels like the beginning again. Making this album, we rediscovered ourselves, and we emerged as something different,” Leto told MTV News. “We did the tour of Europe, which was a new beginning for us, and now, we’re touring America. And to have not toured here in three years, it’s a massive celebration for us and our fans. We feel like we’re beginning the journey again, here in this country.” The journey actually began on Friday in Las Vegas, when 30STM launched their Into the Wild trek at the Palms Casino Resort’s Pearl Theater. The tour will crisscross the country until mid-May, at which point the band will actually take about a month of before heading back to Europe for the summer fest circuit) — though, as Leto points out, they’re not taking a break willingly. “We’re just really excited, and we don’t want to stop,” he laughed. “This band is never exhausted. We’ve been able to play the songs on [ This Is War ] for audiences in Europe, and now we’re getting to play them for fans here. And right now, that’s what’s most exciting … to have people hear it and experience it.” And just what can fans expect on the U.S. leg of Into the Wild? Leto’s not saying. You’ve got to come out and see the show for yourself. “Like I said, it’s a celebration, it’s emotional, it’s a big, loud show,” he explained. “But, really, you’ve got to come out and see it. That’s the best way to put it.” Are you going to see 30 Seconds to Mars on tour this spring? What song are you looking forward to hearing live? Share your excitement below! Usher, Beyonce Collaborator Rico Love Talks ‘Organic’ Songwriting Process

‘I don’t write anything down,’ Love says. By Shaheem Reid Rico Love Photo: MTV News Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native Rico Love came full circle when he got a chance to work with Usher on the singer’s Raymond v. Raymond LP — Rico was signed to Usher’s US Records as a rapper around five years ago. While waiting to release his debut album, Rico showed Ush his other talent — penning R&B songs, which led to him writing one of the premier cuts on Confessions, “Throwback.” Rico started working on his own rap album with producers such as Cool & Dre befored Usher pulled the plug. “I was working on the record, and in the middle of the record Usher decided he wanted to take a step back from the label. He had a lot going on. We understood that. I was left on J. Records and I decided I wasn’t getting a lot of love in the building. I love J. Records, but I don’t think they was recognizing me. So I kind of moved out the building and moved out to L.A. and started focusing on the songwriting. You know me — I just hustled until I got out there and put my money where my mouth was.” Rico’s songwriting breakthrough came in 2008 when he penned “Love Like This” for Natasha Bedingfield’s Pocket of Sunshine album. Through Bedingfield, Love connected with producer Jim Jonsin and moved to Miami. After changing managment, good things started to happen. He was soon working with Pleasure P on The Introduction of Marcus Cooper album and out of those sessions came the Grammy-nominated single “Boyfriend #2.” Work for Jamie Foxx and Beyonc

3OH!3 Discuss ‘Leaked’ Track ‘House Party’

‘That’s a fun song,’ Nathaniel Motte says. By James Montgomery 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News Those 3OH!3 guys have never really been ones for subtlety. Last week, when MTV News visited them in the studio where they were putting the finishing touches on their Streets of Gold album, it seems they were planning to “accidentally” leak a sneak peek of the album a few days later — and they weren’t exactly trying to hide that fact. Oh, and the leak in question was a song called “House Party,” which is — you guessed it — about throwing a totally awesome house party. “There may or may not be a leaked song that we accidentally slip out there on the Internet, with maybe a video, and it might be something about a house party,” 3OH!3’s Nathaniel Motte smiled. “It’s gonna be called ‘House Party,’ and someone might steal it off my computer and put it online pretty soon.” “Yeah, It might be me,” Motte’s cohort Sean Foreman laughed. Lo and behold, a few days later, “House Party” appeared online . And, much like Motte and Foreman had promised, the song is basically one long ode to getting totally wasted within the confines of your own home (sample line: “I’m gonna have a house party in my house/ I’m gonna pour booze down my mouth”). What can we say — 3OH!3 are straightforward dudes. “That’s a fun song. We were talking about it the other day and we’re really excited because all the songs we’ve written thus far — and we’re getting close to the end — are things that we’re really excited about,” Motte said. “And they’re all things we hope to get out there, whether they’re on a CD or whether we release them in another way, we’re excited about all of them.” But while “House Party” can pretty much be taken at face value, it’s only representative of half of what the dynamic duo have done on Streets of Gold, due in June. By their own accounts, there’s an entirely different side to the band and their music, one that gets equal love on the album too. “I think we stretched. As much diversity as there was on the last album, we just pulled that and stretched it further,” Foreman said. “You get stuff on either end of the spectrum — like ‘House Party’ is crazy and has the craziest production, and it’s just a fun anthem that you’d want to sing with all your friends. And then there’s stuff on the other end of it, where it might be a little bit more singing and stuff like that.” “Slow jams for the ladies,” Motte added. “You always need a slow-dance song in the middle of the party,” Foreman laughed. “Make your way to the dance floor, player.” What do you think of 3OH!3’s “leaked” song, “House Party”? Shania Twain Gets Reality Show On Oprah Winfrey Network

‘Why Not? With Shania Twain’ to air on OWN, which launches in 2011. By Jocelyn Vena Shania Twain Photo: Jemal Countess/WireImage Earlier this year, Shania Twain impressed us with her turn as a guest judge on “American Idol.” And it looks like the country singer will be making use of her talent in front of the camera by starring in her own TV show. Twain will star in “Why Not? With Shania Twain,” an hourlong series on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. The network lists the show as one of the first original programs to premiere when OWN launches in January 2011. “The show will follow [Twain] as she begins her climb back to the top, a personal journey filled with risk, revelations and unexpected adventures,” a press release said. Twain’s return to the spotlight comes after some time away following her divorce from record producer Mutt Lange in 2008. At the time, the singer released a statement on her Web site about the split, saying, “I need some time to heal this broken heart but make no mistake; I will be back and hopefully stronger than ever.” She last released an album, Up! , in 2002. And, while she has no immediate plans to release new music, she has said on her Web site that she is writing material. “I’m writing you from the Caribbean where I’m warming up after a cold stretch in Canada during the holidays,” she wrote in a blog post in February. “The sunny weather gets me into writing mode.

50 Cent Looking For New G-Unit Recruits, Including Robert Pattinson?

‘ ‘Twilight’ ain’t no joke,’ the MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Susan Younis 50 Cent Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive It’s been a while since we had Curtis Jackson around these parts in Mixtape Daily. Our fellow Queens native has been on the road for a while, making movies and touring overseas. While hollering at our colleagues at MTV UK, Fif revealed that he wants his Black Magic album to drop before summer is over — oh, and the title has nothing to do with witchcraft. “I don’t believe in voodoo,” he said. “But it’ll be very addictive. The first time you’ll hear it, you’ll remember the songs that’s on there. It’s designed for fun — for listening pleasure. “I’m not in a hurry,” he added about the recording process and release date. “I kind of planned on releasing Black Magic … I gave myself a goal to try and put it out by the end of the summer, so I’ll work that hard on the actual project. If I don’t feel it’s ready by the end of the summer, I’ll just jeep it.” Fif is also going on tour this summer, but said members of his current G-Unit family, including Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo, most likely won’t make the trek. “It’s interesting because they probably won’t be coming with me. In the U.S., Banks has momentum with the first single off his new album, ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley.’ So he’ll be out [on his own tour] with H.F.M. 2 (The Hunger For More 2). While he’s doing that, it probably wouldn’t make sense for Yayo to come with me because his record is almost done now — he should use that time to complete his record and release it shortly after. But I’ll be running around.” No Banks or Yayo, but Fif says he will not be alone — he’s recruiting new members to his camp now. “You’ll see new faces, because I’m looking for new artists now. I’ll sign new artists and take them with me and kinda groom them. I don’t specifically say, ‘I want this kind of artist’ — I look for talent that inspires me, that complements what I do with their own thing. Some of the stuff you can’t teach a person; they gotta have it.” While 50 didn’t name any specific prospects, but did say he wouldn’t mind adding movie heartthrob Robert Pattinson to the Unit’s fold. The star of the “Twilight” franchise (50 said he’s seen “New Moon”) has dabbled in singing in addition to his acting. “Robert Pattinson. He has a big enough following to be the frontline,” 50 laughed. ” ‘Twilight’ ain’t no joke.” What rapper or singer would you like to see join 50 Cent’s G-Unit? Let us know in the comments below!
