If Alex Lambert Can Dream…

Ratings for American Idol have dropped this season and many viewers aren’t thrilled with the remaining contestants. THG thinks we know why: the early elimination of Alex Lambert. Just as this adorable singer was feeling comfortable on stage, fans voted him off. So, where can you catch the young crooner now? Online. Lambert has signed on for If I Can Dream , the Web reality series that follows six people – including Miley Cyrus’ ex, Justin Gaston – attempting to succeed in Hollywood. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly , Alex discusses the show, his future and other topics. A few excerpts are below… What is the show? : They’re going to follow me while I pursue my career. They’re going to hook me up with vocal coaches and co-writers to help me co-write my songs. They’re pretty much going to do everything they can to help me take my music to the next level. There’s five other people in the house, and it’s just showing us pursuing our dreams. Why is he doing it? It’s like the perfect thing I could do right now. I went back home to Texas… I didn’t know what to do with like press, publicity, and all that stuff. So this is perfect. They’re hooking me up with the perfect people. On his popularity : I think the reason that a lot of people like me is [that I’m] something unique that people haven’t really heard on Idol before. There’s never been someone who sounded like me on Idol ever. I guess everyone was like, ”This is cool.” I think I have a unique style, but people realize I’m a beginner.

Rihanna Gets Down With Robots At Kids’ Choice Awards

She sings a medley of her hits ‘Hard,’ ‘Rude Boy’ and ‘Don’t Stop the Music.’ By Amy Wilkinson Rihanna performs at the Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic Riding a mini pink-camouflage tank, Rihanna took the stage at the 23rd annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday (March 27) to perform a medley of her hits. The Barbadian singer began her set with the Rated R single “Hard,” rocking out in a military-inspired, pink-trimmed puffy frock. She quickly transitioned into her latest single, “Rude Boy,” trading her slew of backup dancers for two nearly 7-foot-tall robots, who boogied with the Grammy-winning singer. Joined once again by her dancers, Rihanna closed the set with the Good Girl Gone Bad hit “Don’t Stop the Music.” On the Kids’ Choice Awards orange carpet before the show, Rihanna kept her ensemble light in a beige, draped dress. She was one of the night’s fashion standouts, which also included Taylor Lautner, Miranda Cosgrove and Katy Perry. Rihanna was one of two singers to perform at the awards show, along with teen sensation Justin Bieber, who famously has a crush on the 22-year-old singer. Rihanna is currently working on her next album, which she told MTV Korea would be “more energetic.” ” Rated R, I love the sound of it, in terms of the bass,” Rihanna said. “I really like the bottom, the grime of it. But if I were to combine that with more energetic, uptempo pop records, then I think that will be a happy marriage. And that’s where we’ll probably go next.” What did you think of Rihanna’s performance? Did she perform all the songs you wanted to hear? Let us know in the comments below! Lady Gaga Has Made Dance Music Mainstream, DJ Tommie Sunshine Says

At WMC 2010, the house DJ says success of Gaga and Black Eyed Peas is inspiring new artists. By Akshay Bhansali, with additional reporting by Adam Stewart Lady Gaga Photo: Steve Thorne/ Redferns MIAMI — There is something special in the air in South Beach. You’d expect the mood to be euphoric on day three of the Winter Music Conference, the annual dance music conclave that brings together fans, artists and event promoters from around the world. But this year, people seem to be in an even more delighted mood than usual. House DJ and rock-remix impresario Tommie Sunshine, who’s been attending WMC for the past 14 years, attributes the extra happiness to the increasing relevance of dance music today. “Recently, David Guetta played Pacha in New York on a Wednesday night,” Sunshine told MTV News when we caught up with him poolside on Wednesday at the Raleigh Hotel. “And he and Will.I.Am went two for two all night long. When they played one of the songs Will sang, he sang it live. Three in the morning, Fergie shows up, starts singing all the Black Eyed Peas stuff live. Then Estelle shows, and they do ‘One Love’ together. I mean it was a rock concert in Pacha in New York City. People going absolutely mental on a Wednesday night till 5 o’clock in the morning. It was incredible.” Indeed, the success of the Black Eyed Peas and recent Billboard magazine cover boy David Guetta is the talk of WMC 2010. Virtually, every artist MTV News interviewed on Wednesday spoke reverently of what they have done for making dance music popular. But Brooklyn-based Sunshine wants to remind folks that credit is also due to Lady Gaga . “Anybody that is in South Beach right now that discredits Lady Gaga for what she has done for electronic music is out of their mind,” Sunshine said. “I mean [Gaga producer] Red One and Space Cowboy and her, in collaboration, have done so much for making dance music mainstream. I’m sorry, but there wouldn’t be a David Guetta top 10 hit … there wouldn’t be this Black Eyed Peas record, if it wasn’t for The Fame. The influence of that record is epic, and we are hearing talking about all of this because of that.” And for Sunshine, the blockbuster scale of Gaga’s music videos is also helping the scene regain the prominence it held a few decades ago. “You see the video for ‘Telephone,’ and you’re like, ‘This is real stuff here,’ ” he marveled. “I mean, this is mega serious money being spent to put together amazing videos, using real film directors, for a dance record. That’s a dance track! That is the ‘Thriller’ of our time, you know. And there is all this hubbub about it. I haven’t seen that kind of [excitement] over a video in 20 years. I mean, MTV did that all the time back in the ’80s … and now it’s back. And it’s back with dance music.” Sunshine — who has gained attention through notable remixes of Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco and Good Charlotte — said he thinks that the industry is encouraged, and talent from around the world is coming out of the woodwork. “I’ve been a DJ for 18 years, and I’ve been making music for over a decade,” he said. “I’ve never been this excited about making music. I’m starting a record label because I feel like there is such a wealth of talent now. It’s called Brooklyn Fire, and I’ve found guys from all over the world. Some of these guys I’m working with, they are in New Zealand. They are all over Europe. They are in Jakarta, Indonesia. With the Internet and Soundcloud and all of these other things that connect us all, Twitter — I’ve found most of the artists on my label over Twitter. It sounds crazy, but this is how we are all doing business now.” Are you listening to more electronic and dance music because of Lady Gaga? Let us know in the comments! Kelis Says Working With Will.I.Am On Flesh Tone ‘Felt Right’

‘He’s great because he has a really vast knowledge of music,’ she says of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kelis Photo: MTV News Kelis’ funky musical style and the Neptunes’ quirky production always seemed like the perfect fit, as evident on hits like the sprightly “Caught Out There” and the rumbling “Milkshake.” But the singer parted ways with Pharrell and Chad Hugo on her last album, 2006’s Kelis Was Here. For her forthcoming offering, Flesh Tone, Kelis has hooked up with a different super-producer: the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am. The pair worked together in the past , but now, Kelis is signed to Will’s label through Interscope Records. “Will and I worked on my last album together, and I love the fact that — a lot of producers don’t know music. They might know the genre that they’re doing, but he’s great because he has a really vast knowledge of music,” Kelis told MTV News about her new boss. “There’s not a song you can mention or an era of music that you can mention that he doesn’t know about or doesn’t understand what made it that [successful]. I think that’s the key in trying to do something fresh.” As a result of the lead Pea’s musical knowledge, Kelis described their union as “comfortable” and said it “felt right.” So far, Kelis revealed she’s been working with producers Free School, who are also signed to Will.I.Am’s label, on an uptempo collection of tracks slated for Flesh Tone. Late last year, Kelis hinted that her next album would feature a “futuristic disco” sound . Recently, she spoke to MTV News about her latest single, “Acapella,” which topped the Billboard Dance & Club Songs chart. Kelis said the feedback for the David Guetta-produced electronic number has been welcome. “I knew that I loved it, and I felt really good about it,” she said. “It’s exciting to see that people feel what you feel. That’s always encouraging. But I had no idea that that would happen that quickly like that. I just knew that the song felt really real for me.” What do think about the direction Kelis is taking her music? Who else should she work with besides Will.I.Am? Let us know in the comments below! The 15-year-old actress took on the role of Cherie Currie in the flick opposite New Moon star Kristen Stewart , who plays Joan Jett. “[Singing] was something that I was a little bit nervous about and something I’ve always been self-conscious about, but was something I was excited to do. But I wanted to make sure that I could do it well and do the songs justice because they’re so iconic and so well-known. I was really excited that I was able to do it and that [the real-life singer] Cherie supported me and was really helpful to me!” Is there anything Dakota Fanning can’t do?

Kelis Takes Her Dance Hit ‘Acapella’ To Winter Music Conference

Singer, who hits WMC 2010 later this week, says ‘Acapella’ is a ‘really great song to perform.’ By Steven Roberts Kelis Photo: MTV News When Kelis ‘ newest single, “Acapella,” topped the Billboard Dance & Club Songs chart earlier this month, it was the singer’s first chart-topper since 2003’s “Milkshake.” Oddly enough, it started as just a Dave Guetta beat she had lying around and a melody she couldn’t quite get out of her head. “I’ve known Guetta for a long time just as a DJ in France, just partying in Paris and just being out there,” Kelis recalled. “I didn’t even know he was doing a record until a friend of mine sent me some beats, and he was like, ‘Guetta would love for you to write something for his album.’ I just started writing to a bunch of them, and I just heard this beat, and there was no melody to it. It was just a beat. I just had this melody that came to me right away, so I just laid this melody down really quick and just forgot about it and kept moving and doing stuff.” Kelis said she listened to it every day in the studio and tried to write something to it. She said “Acapella” eventually came to her. She never expected much would come of it — especially not a #1 record. “I knew that I loved it, and I felt really good about it,” she said. “It’s exciting to see that people feel what you feel. That’s always encouraging. But I had no idea that that would happen that quickly like that. I just knew that the song felt really real for me.” “Acapella” is the lead single from Kelis’ newest album, Flesh Tone. The album, which she expects to be released in June, is her first under Will.I.Am’s Will.I.Am Music Group. Kelis worked with the Black Eyes Peas head honcho on her previous record and was impressed with his musical IQ. “There’s not a song you can mention or an era you can mention in music that he doesn’t know about or understand what made it that,” she marveled. “I think it’s key in trying to do something fresh. It just felt comfortable and felt right, and I haven’t been a part of a group since my first, second record [with the Neptunes].” She is also looking forward to performing the track at the Winter Music Conference in Miami later this week. “It’s great, because I think ‘Acapella’ is a really great song to perform, and for some reason my first singles are always a nightmare to perform live,” she laughed. “And this is actually really fun.” Stick with MTV News for more coverage of the WMC 2010, which kicks off Tuesday in Miami. Justin Bieber Has Perez Hilton To Thank For My World 2.0 Track

Blogger says he hooked Bieber up with ‘Somebody to Love.’ By James Montgomery Perez Hilton Photo: MTV News As you probably know by now, Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 hits stores on Tuesday. What you may not be aware of is the role Perez Hilton played in the making of it. When MTV News spoke to the blogger-turned-music-mogul backstage at his high-profile South by Southwest party , he explained his connection to the teen-pop sensation. And he professed his undying admiration for all things Bieber-y. “People won’t believe this, but it’s true. I was into Justin Bieber two years ago, because I discovered him on YouTube, but I wasn’t in a position to do anything, because I didn’t have a record label back then,” Hilton said. “Thankfully, I told other people other people about Justin Bieber back then. So I didn’t just keep it to myself. I didn’t post it on my Web site or anything, but I did talk about it, because it was the beginning of the conversations of me doing something with music, so I was hoping I could do something with him in the future, but it didn’t pan out. … But I love Justin Bieber, I love that girls are into [him].” So how is Hilton linked to My World 2.0 ? Turns out, the connection is Los Angeles-based production team Stereotypes, who played a new song for Hilton. “It’s actually not even six degrees, it’s one degree of Perez on his new album, because I’m so involved in music now, and I’m working with a lot of artists, I’ve been meeting with a lot of producers,” he explained. “I met with this camp in the Valley, they’re called Stereotypes. They’re these up-and-coming producers, and they played me a lot of their music, and one of their songs, the first time I heard it, I was like, ‘This is a smash. This is a huge hit.’ And then I started thinking, ‘This might be a great song for Justin Bieber.’ So I sent it over to JB’s camp. Justin loved it. They recorded the song, it’s going to be on his new album, and it’s going to be a huge hit for him. The song’s called ‘Somebody to Love.’ ” So, if on Tuesday, you’re grooving to My World 2.0, remember to give thanks to Perez Hilton. After all, he’s just one little part of Bieber’s success. Sort of. “What can I say?” Hilton laughed. “I make things happen.” Related Artists Justin Bieber

‘The Runaways’ Director Would Love To Make ‘Surreal’ Lady Gaga Video

‘She’d be fun. She’s quite theatrical,’ says prolific music-video director Floria Sigismondi. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Gabriel Bouys/ Getty Images “The Runaways” is Floria Sigismondi’s feature film directorial debut, but she has been directing music videos since 1993’s “A Certain Slant of Light” by the Tea Party. In the nearly two decades since, she’s helmed a number of influential and high-profile videos for everyone from Marilyn Manson (“Beautiful People”) to the White Stripes (“Blue Orchid”) to Christina Aguilera (“Fighter), just to name a few. Most recently, the prolific director shot the video for “Let It Rain” for the Living Things, the band fronted by her husband, Lillian Berlin. While she’s currently trying to figure out her next film project might be, Sigismondi said that she wouldn’t mind shooting a music video for Lady Gaga. The pop star’s nearly 10-minute clip for “Telephone,” which references everything from prison films to Madonna to Andy Warhol, finally has people talking about videos again. “She’d be fun. She’s quite theatrical,” Sigismondi told MTV News on the red carpet of the New York premiere for “The Runaways.” “I don’t know, but I kind of grew up with costumes all my life, so I would go in there and do something kind of surreal maybe.” And while she would love to concoct a treatment for Gaga, Sigismondi is also looking to follow up her rock biopic with something different. “I think I’ll probably go into some fiction,” she explained. “A little, kind of, made-up worlds and a little more fantastical.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Runaways.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
