50 Cent Says Uptempo Black Magic LP Is ‘Still Hip-Hop’

‘It’s still 50 Cent content; it’s just written in a different way,’ he tells U.K. DJ Tim Westwood. By Shaheem Reid 50 Cent Photo: Getty Images Earlier this week, an overseas interview with 50 Cent hit the Web in which he said his upcoming LP, Black Magic, would have a different feel. “I went to a nightclub afterparty,” 50 told reporter Jonas Pettersen. “It’s a little different music going on before I got there. They play your music when you come. But the music they played before they started playing a lot of what I created was more uptempo, more dance. I wanted to make a song like that. So I went into the studio. Because I’m traveling with my live band, I took my band with me and sequenced it and recorded the actual record while I was out there. I did two other songs I had production for. I had been writing those songs for a while. So I finished them and recorded them while I was out.” The G-Unit General is leaning toward dance music? Fif says not so fast. He clarified his creative direction when he called into U.K. DJ Tim Westwood’s show the other day. “I got a joint that I did that was real uptempo,” 50 told Westwood. “It’s a different type of vibe. It’s still 50 Cent. It’s official. If you heard the record, you’d feel different. My Black Magic album, I’ve been listening to different types of music. I just wanna create something that’s outta the box. I’m using different song formats. I’ll write a rap song in the sequence of a different kind of record. A traditional hip-hop record may have three 16-bar verses. To write it in a different formant instead of the way a traditional rap record is written, to experiment with different things, it’s still hip-hop music. It’s still 50 Cent content; it’s just written in a different way.” 50 also talked about getting sued for posting a sex tape of one of the mothers of Rick Ross’ children online. “That wasn’t me; that was Pimpin’ Curly,” 50 said of his comedic alter ego. “When a person tries to say, ‘You’ve done something that’s created mental harm to them in some way,’ then they might wanna consider the recordings of Rick Ross saying she’s an actual call girl. Or the pamphlets I’m showing you in the actual tape that’s saying she’s available. How distraught is she? They think I bought the tape. I didn’t even buy it.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: 50 Cent Related Artists 50 Cent

Lady Gaga’s Love Story With Rob Fusari

Lady Gaga’s former boyfriend, producer and business partner claims that he helped launch the pop star, and is now suing her for $35 million because she squeezed him out of her lucrative career after their failed relationship. Rob Fusari, a songwriter and producer, said that he’s the man who came up with Stefani Germanotta’s stage name which is “Lady Gaga”. He also co-wrote some of her song and helped her get record deal. He filed the lawsuit on Wednesday in a Manhattan state court. Their story starts in spring of 2006 when Stefani Germanotta, 20-year-old, rode a bus from Manhattan to Fusari’s studio in Parsippany, New Jersey, to work on music. When Fusari saw the young Italian girl, he was worried that he made a mistake because he was expecting someone a little more dirt-rocker than the girl who came at his doorstep. He then asked her to play one of her songs on the piano. After seeing her performance, he realized that she has a potential to become a star. Though he found her songs were brilliant, something is lacking, it’s commercial appeal. He strongly encouraged Germanotta to explore varieties of musical style. He spent several months working with her every day and radically reshaping her approach. During those times, Germanotta commuted from New York to Jersey seven days a week. He also persuaded her to drop rock riffs for dance beats, demonstrating how the sound of a drum machine would not affect the wholeness of her music. The suit claims that he transformed Germanotta into Lady Gaga, a name adapted from Queen’s “Radio Ga Ga.” As they were working intensely and becoming much closer with each other, their romance began to grow deeper. Then Germanotta and her father signed a contract with Fusari committing 20 percent share. In May 2007, Lady Gaga got a new recording contract with Interscope. After that, she had stopped answering Fusari’s phone calls. Still, Fusari co-wrote and produced four songs on Lady Gaga’s debut album “The Fame”, including the hit Paparazzi”. Lady Gaga won two Grammys in January, best dance recording for her song”Poker Face” and best electronic and dance album for “The Fame” Lady Gaga’s Love Story With Rob Fusari is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Lady Gaga Facing Lawsuit Charges for $35M

imageshack Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta who we popularly know as Lady Gaga is being sued by her ex-flame, producer and business partner, for $35 million, claiming that he was pushed away after their failed romance. Songwriter-producer Rob Fusari’s lawsuit contends that he metamorphosed Germanotta into “Lady Gaga” and switched her rock riffs with dance beats to make her songs international commercial hits. Fusari co-wrote and produced four songs on Lady Gaga’s debut album “The Fame,” including the hit “Paparazzi.” “We have no comment,” Lady Gaga’s publicist told CNN on Thursday night. One of the world’s hottest recording acts of Lady Gaga won two Grammy’s this year for her debut album. Robert Meloni, Fusari’s lawyer, borrowed a line from William Congreve’s tragic play “The Mourning Bride” to set the stage for his arguments. “Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned,” Meloni said. Lady Gaga was the woman despised when Fusari ended their romance, according to the suit. “All business is personal. When those personal relationships evolve into romantic entanglements, any corresponding business relationship usually follows the same trajectory so that when one crashes, they all burn. That is what happened here,” the lawsuit said. The story starts with 20-year-old Germanotta riding a bus from Manhattan to Fusari’s studio in Parsippany, New Jersey, to work on music in the spring of 2006. “Fusari was expecting someone a little more grunge-rocker than the young Italian girl ‘guidette’ that arrived at his doorstep and was worried that he had made a mistake,” the court papers said. “Fusari then asked her to play one of her songs on the studio piano and within seconds, realized that Germanotta had star potential. The trick would be coaxing it out of her.” While Fusari thought Germanotta’s songs were brilliant, they lacked commercial appeal, the suit said. “He pushed her to explore different musical genres,” it said. “Over the course of the next several months, Germanotta commuted from New York to Jersey seven days a week, radically reshaping her approach. They put their focus on writing music and finding a sound for her.” Fusari takes credit for convincing her “to abandon rock riffs and add dance beats. He demonstrated how the sound of a drum machine would not hurt the integrity of her music.” The suit claims Fusari created her stage name by accident. A text message intended to read “Radio Ga Ga,” named after the Queen Song, was changed by spell check on his cell phone to “Lady Ga Ga,” it said. “Germanotta loved it and ‘Lady Gaga’ was born.” Their romance blossomed as they were “working intensely in such close emotional quarters,” it said. Germanotta and her father soon signed a contract with Fusari giving him a 20 percent share of her career, the suit said. The romance died down after Lady Gaga gained and then lost a record deal with Island Def Jam, it said. “The couple was now constantly bickering as Germanotta became more and more verbally abusive towards Fusari,” the suit said. “Fusari wanted to return their relationship to a purely professional level, so in January 2007, he ended their romantic involvement.” After Lady Gaga got a new recording contract in May 2007 with Interscope, she stopped answering Fusari’s phone calls, it said. Major Lazer Launch U.S. Tour At Winter Music Conference

‘We have these gigantic lasers,’ Diplo says of the duo’s live show. By Akshay Bhansali Major Lazer Photo: Rob Loud/ Getty Images Reggae. Dubstep. Hip-hop. However you try to describe the music of Major Lazer producers Diplo and Switch, one thing is certain: It is dance music. And if their songs like “Pon the Floor,” “Hold the Line” (featuring Mr. Lex and Santigold) and “Keep It Goin’ Louder” (featuring Nina Sky and Brooklyn, NY vocalist Rick Blaze) already make you get down, on tour the party is going to get a whole lot brighter. “A Major Lazer show is pretty sick,” Diplo said when we caught up with him Thursday (March 18). “We are doing a whole U.S. tour, so we have these gigantic lasers — these super-duper f—ing lasers!” And with Diplo being from the Orlando, Florida, area, it makes sense that the tour is set to kick-off at Miami’s Winter Music Conference . In fact, for the former Hollertronix DJ/Producer who frequently produces songs with M.I.A., WMC is a place of nostalgia. “I’ve been going down there since I was a kid,” he said. “I would go down to see Portishead or Chemical Brothers when I was 15. Seeing Portishead when I was really young there was really dope. I was really into their record at the time.” This year Major Lazer is set to share the Ultra Music Festival stage with one of the more diverse electronic bills to date: David Guetta, A-Trak, Deadmau5, Will.I.Am, LMFAO, Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris, DJ Tiesto and many more are all set to perform at UMF. “There used to be different divisions between underground music and commercial house and experimental stuff and avant garde,” Diplo explained. “To be honest, those lines are now blended, you know. I’ve done a record with Tiesto and he’s a f—ing cool guy. Everybody is taking influences … all of us are just making club music, and we try to outdo each other with how we can make people go crazier. It’s a very competitive spirit down there.” Major Lazer’s U.S. tour begins Saturday March 27 at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami and will carry through 17 more cities, wrapping at Coachella in Indio, California, before moving on to Canada and Europe. Gucc has masterminded a mixtape album from behind bars, and it will be sold with the official sanction of Asylum Records. The title, The BurrrPrint 2HD, is familiar to fans of Gucci LaFlare — it’s a sequel to last year’s The BurrrPrint street CD. BurrrPrint 2HD is hosted by DJ Holiday and features all new tracks produced mostly by Drumma Boy. However, Schife, Fatboi and Shawty Redd also supplied beats. Gucci’s guest list is an all-star one: Rick Ross, Yo Gotti, Jim Jones, Trey Songs, DJ Khaled, Waka Flocka, Shawty Lo, Ludacris and, of course, Nicki Minaj and OJ Da Juiceman. When Gucci went to jail last winter, his lawyer said he expected the ‘hood favorite to be out of jail sometime this spring. Although there is no concrete date for Mr. Mane’s return, the rapper did tell Mixtape Daily in December that plans to release two sequels to The State vs. Radric Davis LP in 2010. And DJ Holiday told MTV News that Gucci is already planning to record another mixtape, The Writing’s on the Wall, as soon as he’s a free man. The cover of BurrrPrint 2HD features an illustration of Gucci in prison with his feet up on the table, ready to feast on seafood, champagne and strawberries. Burrr! Juelz Santana Talks NYC Collabo With Lloyd Banks, Jadakiss, Fabolous

Santana divulges details on his ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley’ follow-up to Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Juelz Santana Photo: John Ricard/FilmMagic The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Lloyd Banks and Juelz Santana have perhaps the biggest record in New York City right now with “Beamer, Benz or Bentley.” Santana recently told us about the next shout-out to the Big Apple — he’s lined up some of NYC’s finest for a track from his upcoming The Reagan Era mixtape. “We got another record for the mixtape,” Juelz explained of how he and Banks plan to follow up their current smash. “That record’s actually got me, Fabolous, Jadakiss and Banks on it. … We took the Estelle sample from ‘American Boy’ that goes ‘Take me to New York’ and kept repeating that. I sent it to everybody that I felt [could kill it], which was me, Fab, Banks and Jada. But me and Banks gonna have to do another one together with just me and him. That record is crazy. That Reagan Era is gonna be a problem — that’s why I been taking my time strategically building up. I think now is a better time. Every day I’m drawing more attention to myself.” While Juelz has the video for his record with Lil Wayne “Home Run” — also off of The Reagan Era — coming soon, he’s still excited about “Beamer, Benz or Bentley.” “I knew what that song was gonna be when we did the record,” Juelz said about his duet with Banks. “The beat is so unique, then you got two artists that’s never done a record before. And it’s a record that people would like to hear. It’s a ‘hood record and we was both spitting on there — you rarely get that anymore, especially with two artists like me and Banks. A lot of time people teaming up and they just making records because the names sound good. But the records don’t sound good because they either rushed or n—as just getting up just to get up. You know how they say when two artists get together and make a song how it is supposed to be? It completes everything we do. It’s radio, but it’s still hard. ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley,’ that’s still ‘hood rich. It captures the essence that people would have liked for it to have with me and Banks on the same record.” Santana says The Reagan Era will be out before the end of the month. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day With Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, More

Irish and Ireland-loving bands will whoop it up to celebrate the holiday. By MTV News staff Dropkick Murphys’ Al Barr Photo: Jakubaszek/ Getty Images St. Patrick’s Day fanatics are facing another tough decision this year, with the annual celebration of Irish culture falling in the middle of the week for the second year in a row. One of the nation’s premier shamrocking bands, Boston punks the Dropkick Murphys , happen to have a new live album, Live on Lansdowne, which was recorded last year during their seven-show, six-night St. Paddy’s run. They’re back at the House of Blues in Boston on Wednesday night (March 17) for the second night of a sold-out stand with Sick of It All and gypsy punks Larry and His Flask. As usual, Boston is a nexus of Irish rock gigs, with Toronto’s appropriately named Celtic rock band Enter the Haggis teaming up with Hoots and Hellmouth at the city’s Showcase Live! one of the city’s favorite sons, former Murphys singer Mick McColgan, and his Street Dogs hit the Cobra Lounge in Chicago on Wednesday as well. California’s answer to the Murphys, Flogging Molly — who also have a new live album out, Live at the Greek Theatre — are in the midst of their annual Green 17 Tour, which will find them in Tempe, Arizona, for the big night playing at the Luckyman’s St. Patrick’s Day Bash at Tempe Beach Park. Another long-running Irish punk act, Black 47, who warmed up for the big day with a show at Boston’s Showcase Live! on Tuesday night, will touch down at B.B. King’s in New York to play their 21st St. Patrick’s Day gig, also a celebration of a new CD, Bankers & Gangsters. One of the most popular traditional Irish bands on the planet, the long-running Chieftains, have a gig at New York’s Town Hall in support of their new album, San Patricio, which blends the music of the Emerald Isle and Mexico with guest spots from Linda Ronstadt, Liam Neeson and Los Tigres del Norte. And while legendary pub rockers the Pogues don’t have any gigs planned this year, sadly, Chicago’s the Tossers will do their best to honor the spirit of Shane MacGowan and company with a throwdown at one of their hometown’s premier rock clubs, the Metro. And finally, celtic rockers the Young Dubliners will play the ShamRock in the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego in the evening and then hit the House of Blues in Los Angeles for a 10:30 gig later that night. The ShamRock will also feature sets from Irish pub rockers the Fooks, No Doubt cover band No Duh and a headline spot from SD’s favorite Irish punk band the Down Family.

MTV’s Musical March Madness: Band Bracketology

We pit the top 65 rock bands in the business against one another, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Kings of Leon Photo: RCA/Getty Images Look, I love college. I love basketball. And I love gambling. So March Madness is sort of like Christmas, Thanksgiving and my 21st birthday all rolled into one. For one glorious month, I am overjoyed, overstuffed and frequently make bad decisions (like picking Baylor to go to the Final Four this year). And on Sunday, as I sat on my couch watching ESPN’s apoplectic coverage of the 2010 NCAA basketball tournament bracket, I had a thought: What if I combined my love of those things with my other true passion, music? (Oh, and making superfluous lists too.) Inspired, I spent the next few days compiling a list of the top 65 rock bands in the business — a task that was considerably (and sadly) much tougher than I had previously imagined (because, well, I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, but rock is sort of going through a rough patch at the moment). Frustrated, I checked the Billboard rock charts, listened to the radio and even read a blog or two, and finally, I had my field of 65. These are the bands that — in my best estimation — people actually care about, the ones who sell out arenas, lodge songs on the charts and manage to move units. Some of them I love, others I know nothing about, but they’re all here. MTV News’ Band Bracketology Next, I ranked them, based on my own personal foibles and some actual data too. I moved a few teams around based on geography (because no one wants to travel all that far during the tournament); weighed questions like “Would 3OH!3 be the second-place team in the WAC?” and “Do All Time Low belong in the ACC or the Atlantic Sun?” (strength of schedule matters, after all); stared at my list for about a day; and then set my field. I was determined. I was a selection committee of one. I am probably going crazy. So here, after much consternation, is my Musical March Madness — my Band Bracketology (alliteration!). How do teams advance? I have no idea. What do they get for winning the championship? You got me. All I know is that I had to do this, and so it is done. You can see my entire bracket here , and I’ve broken down each region to highlight key matchups and whatnot. Oh, and maybe we can turn this into some sort of contest or something. If you want to print out my bracket, fill out your picks, scan ’em in, then e-mail the bracket back to me. I’ll select the most creative (and logical … no 16 seed is gonna win it all) entry, which will win a prize of some indeterminate value. Maybe you could write some of this column one week — who knows? Anyway, if you’ve got an insane amount of free time (like me) and are insane (again, like me), then you can send your brackets to BTTS@MTVStaff.com . And, without further ado, let’s let the (largely arbitrary) madness begin. Oh, and P.S., I spent waaay more time on this than I probably should have. The #1 Seeds Nickelback :The Canadian rockers landed the #1 seed in the Midwest region, if only because that’s where their music is played the most (broad generalizations are essential when you’re the sole member of the selection committee). Also, though their Dark Horse album came out in late 2008, it continues to dominate to this day, having sold more than 2.5 million copies. Someone you know owns it. You may not like them, but you’ve got to admire their consistency. Sort of like Duke. Blink-182 : The committee gave them the #1 spot in the West region based on the strength of their comeback tour and the never-ending hype surrounding their still-in-the-works sixth album, which could come out in time for them to grab a #1 in next year’s tournament (but probably won’t). Also, Mark Hoppus is a nice dude. That goes a long way with the committee. A band with a storied history and a solid track record. So … Kansas? Coldplay : Still one of the hugest bands in the world, despite not releasing a new album last year, Coldplay are #1 in the East region (it’s closest to their native England, and geography always plays a part in seeding). The debate rages if they’ll play in their home uniforms (tattered military jackets, epaulets and ribbons) or their away (tattered military jackets, epaulets and ribbons). A classic finesse team, Coldplay won’t beat you into submission, but they find a way to win. They are Kentucky. Brian Eno is their Adolph Rupp. Kings of Leon : #1 in the South — and practically everywhere else — the Kings enter the tournament as my top-ranked team, based largely on their massive 2009. They finally broke through to U.S. audiences, after years of scrumming and slumming. The committee loved their strength of schedule, unyielding work ethic and grinding style of play. In other words, they are Syracuse. Midwest The so-called “flyover states” get a bracket positively brimming with appropriate bands, including fifth-seeded Slipknot, 10th-seeded Breaking Benjamin and 11th-seeded Shinedown (once again, broad generalizations are the rule of the day come tourney time). Muse is the surprise #2 seed, since they keep hanging around on modern-rock radio. Not sure why Cobra Starship ended up out here, but Saporta and company better bring their A-game for their opening-round matchup against Shinedown. The Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers are name picks, making the field despite all evidence to the contrary (sort of like Michigan State). The Pete Wentz/ Patrick Stump tussle should be a barn-burner. The Hold Steady grabbed the automatic bid as champions of the Mid-American Conference and because something like 90 percent of their songs are set in the Midwest. Possible sleeper? OK Go at #12, still riding high on the success of their “This Too Shall Pass” video . (1) Nickelback vs. (16) The Hold Steady (2) Muse vs. (15) Red Hot Chili Peppers (3) Foo Fighters vs. (14) AFI (4) The White Stripes vs. (13) Rise Against (5) Slipknot vs. (12) OK Go (6) Cobra Starship vs. (11) Shinedown (7) 3OH!3 vs. (10) Breaking Benjamin (8) Pete Wentz vs. (9) Patrick Stump West A bracket loaded with talent (probably the second-toughest field in the tournament), nostalgia (the reunited Sublime and Soundgarden, both former tournament champions looking to reclaim past glories) and good vibes (thanks mostly to fourth-seeded Jack Johnson), the West region is solid from top to bottom. Key first-round matchups include the top-seeded Blink taking on feisty 16 seed Angels & Airwaves (these two have a history), a battle for Pacific Northwest supremacy between Death Cab for Cutie and Soundgarden (upset alert) and a tough draw for fifth-seeded (yet scuffling) My Chemical Romance, who take on the upstart Gorillaz. Panic! at the Disco and the Young Veins are co-champions of the Mountain West Conference, in case you were wondering. (1) Blink-182 vs. (16) Angels & Airwaves (2) Green Day vs. (15) Panic! at the Disco (3) Jack Johnson vs. (14) The Young Veins (4) Pearl Jam vs. (13) Hollywood Undead (5) My Chemical Romance vs. (12) Gorillaz (6) Weezer vs. (11) Sublime (7) Death Cab for Cutie vs. (10) Soundgarden (8) Modest Mouse vs. (9) 30 Seconds to Mars East The self-proclaimed “intellectual enclave” (OK, I just made that up, but I bet someone from the Upper West Side has said this at some point) gets the “blog bracket,” packed with buzz bands, aging indie acts and, well, U2 (I had to put them somewhere). Animal Collective are the #2 seed in the East, something that will come as a surprise to 99 percent of the U.S. but not the blogging elite, who probably wanted them as the #1 (or, deciding that they like Panda Bear’s solo stuff better, not have them in the tournament at all). Also making appearances are finesse bands like Owl City, Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear and Phoenix. The Radiohead/Spoon matchup should have the thin-and-pasty set glued to their seats, and fifth-seeded Phoenix faces a tough test from #12 seed the National. Also, inexplicably in as the #15 seed, Faith No More could bully their way past AnCo then terrify the winner of the MGMT/ Arcade Fire matchup and wind up in the Sweet 16. But, really, this bracket is Coldplay’s to lose. Oh, and Tokio Hotel are the #16 seed on the basis of their last album, so deal with it. The committee cannot overlook cold, hard facts. (1) Coldplay vs. (16) Tokio Hotel (2) Animal Collective vs. (15) Faith No More (3) Owl City vs. (14) The Gaslight Anthem (4) Vampire Weekend vs. (13) Pavement (5) Phoenix vs. (12) The National (6) Grizzly Bear vs. (11) U2 (7) MGMT vs. (10) Arcade Fire (8) Radiohead vs. (9) Spoon South The bracket of death. Huge talent will go head-to-head down South, where the field is so stacked that Nick Jonas only got in as a #12 seed. But the real wild card here is Lil Wayne, who nabbed a #4 seed despite only sorta being a rock act. If he shows up (and showing up isn’t exactly his strong suit), he could run the table here. I probably should have flipped Paramore and the Dave Matthews Band, but I already filled out the official bracket in ink, so, too late. Huge first-round tilts include the 8/9 game, which pits Kris Allen against Adam Lambert in a rematch of last season’s “American Idol” finale, John Mayer versus Nick Jonas (an old-fashioned “heartthrob-off”) and Phish vs. My Morning Jacket, which could possibly make the jam-band universe explode. The top-seeded Kings get the winner of the Against Me!/ Creed play-in game, an all-Florida matchup of good versus evil. I’ve just decided that Phish grabbed the automatic bid as champions of the super-stony America East Conference, btw. (1) Kings of Leon vs. (16) Against Me!/ Creed (2) Paramore vs. (15) Coheed and Cambria (3) Dave Matthews Band vs. (14) Them Crooked Vultures (4) Lil Wayne vs. (13) Alice in Chains (5) John Mayer vs. (12) Nick Jonas & the Administration (6) Phish vs. (11) My Morning Jacket (7) All-Time Low vs. (10) Mastodon (8) Kris Allen vs. (9) Adam Lambert Questions?
