The track, titled ‘Miss That Pu—,’ will appear on the Chicago R&B singer’s upcoming album, King of Hearts . By Jayson Rodriguez Lloyd Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Five years ago, Lloyd scored a hit with “You,” a swooning, mid-tempo track from his sophomore effort, Street Talk , that featured Lil Wayne. For the remix of that tune, the then-Murder Inc. Records artist (Ja Rule, Ashanti) recruited Nas and OutKast’s Andre 3000, the latter of whom delivered a poetic verse reminding fans of his MC pedigree. Now, it looks like Lloyd has locked down both Wayne and Andre again for a track called “Miss That Pu—” that will be featured on his forthcoming album, King of Hearts . “I liked the way it used to be,” the R&B singer told Vibe magazine about the theme of the racy tongue-in-cheek number, for which his guest rappers have yet to deliver their verses. King of Hearts , which is due out April 19, will be Lloyd’s first album since he signed a deal with Interscope Records. Lloyd, who is working closely with producer Polow Da Don (Fergie, Usher, Keri Hilson) on the project, has gone on record saying that they are making music that’s comparable to some of the greatest producer/singer combinations of all time. “In my opinion, and this is a bold statement, but it’s like Michael [Jackson] and Quincy [Jones], it’s like Justin [Timberlake] and Timbaland, Usher and Jermaine [Dupri],” Lloyd told MTV News last year. “It’s that consistency that you can only find from really finding the right chemistry with the right person. As an artist, I can speak for everyone when I say chemistry is a big, big part of success.” Related Artists Lloyd Lil Wayne OutKast Andre 3000

‘Lyrically, he’s gotten better,’ producer tells Vibe magazine. By James Dinh Drake Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Drake wasn’t kidding when he said he’d been “compiling some great raps” for his new album, Take Care — just ask the project’s collaborator/producer Boi-1da. In a recent interview with Vibe magazine , the hip-hop hitmaker — who worked heavily on Drizzy’s Thank Me Later and Keri Hilson’s recent effort — spoke about how impressed he was with the Toronto MC’s lyrical flow on the sophomore effort. “Man, 2011 is going to be a good year for music,” Boi-1da told Vibe . “Drake’s in tip-top shape, and what’s amazed me is that lyrically, he’s gotten better. He was already an outstanding lyricist, but now I’m just in anticipation of what people are going to think when they hear his new music.” The producer also revealed he gave Lil Wayne some beats for the rapper’s next project, Tha Carter IV . Boi-1da said Drake is trying to prove his credibility as a rapper more than as an R&B vocalist, saying the MC’s bars speak for themselves. “I know a lot of people had criticized him for singing,” the producer acknowledged, “but I think he’s just coming back to show people why they fell in love with him, like, ‘Did you forget about me?’ And it’s really coming out in his raps. It’s something I can’t even really explain.” Based on recent interviews, it seems as if the Toronto star is focused on making his sophomore effort much more than your average album. ” Take Care is its own mission,” he said during an appearance on Shade 45’s morning show. “I’m really going back to the So Far Gone where, first of all, as much as the label and people are fighting me, I’m not doing 14 songs, ’cause it doesn’t give me enough. I want to do interludes, transitions and different moments. I have an overabundance. I’ve never had this many raps.” Do you prefer Drake rapping or singing? Tell us in the comments! But fans will ‘still get some fire’ on Love Me Back, R&B singer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Joel Hanek Jazmine Sullivan Photo: MTV News Jazmine Sullivan announced she was Fearless in 2008 when she released her debut album. And while the LP shares a title with the Taylor Swift album released the same year, it was vastly different in musical style, thanks to help from Missy Elliot, Stargate, Salaam Remi and Wyclef Jean. Two years later, Sullivan is back with her follow-up, Love Me Back, and she gets an assist again from Elliot and Remi, as well as contributions from Ne-Yo, No I.D. and Los da Mystro. When MTV News caught up with Sullivan, she explained that she hoped to overcome the sophomore slump on this project. “This is my sophomore album, I definitely felt a lot of pressure during the beginning of it, but I kind of just released it and that’s when everything started to flow,” Sullivan said. “So I’m excited what people have to say about it.” The singer has released two singles — “Holding You Down (Goin’ in Circles)” and “10 Seconds” — from the album, which has been getting high scores from reviewers. Sullivan said this time around she wanted to show fans a different side of herself. “I think you’ll definitely see a softer side,” she said. “You’ll still get some fire — I can’t give that up — but definitely going to get a softer side. There are different sides of love, good and bad.” What do you think of Jazmine Sullivan’s new album? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Artists Jazmine Sullivan
‘There’s someone right behind me … ready to push me down the stairs, just like in ‘Showgirls,’ ‘ she tells U.K.’s Guardian about staying on top. By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Katy Perry is one hardworking girl. In preparation for the release of her new album, Teenage Dream, the singer has hit a slew of magazine covers in barely there outfits and also hosted the Teen Choice Awards, which air Monday night (August 9) on Fox. But a busy schedule hasn’t diminished Perry’s self-awareness. In a recent interview with the U.K.’s Guardian, the California Gurl talks about her pop-star status, how being with Russell Brand makes her feel smarter, and why you won’t find her getting trashed in your local bar. “I don’t feel like I’m very pop-star lame, but I’m definitely not hipster cool,” the singer said told the newspaper. “I’m somewhere right in the middle of it all. Because, for me, I want to sell out, but just not in the ‘I’ve sold out’ kind of way. I want to sell out arenas and sell millions of records.” Aside from her career goals, Perry also opened up about her relationship with fianc
‘Dre’s a friend to me, so it was just, ‘Let’s go get it in,’ ‘ Game tells the AP. By Mawuse Ziegbe The Game Photo: Gallo Images/ Getty Images Although Dr. Dre is one of the biggest producers in the world, Game said that reuniting with The Chronic legend was just a matter of a phone call. The Cali MC said he and Dre started working together again on his upcoming The R.E.D. Album after the influential producer simply dialed him up. “Dre just called me one day, and he was like, ‘You wanna work?’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah,’ and he’s like, ‘Come down.’ I’m like, ‘Cool, see you in 30,’ ” Game told The Associated Press. “That was it. Game and Dre back together again.” Dre and Game collaborated on the MC’s debut, The Documentary, when Game first joined the producer’s Aftermath label. Although Game told MTV News that he titled his follow-up, Doctor’s Advocate, to pay homage to and show his support for Dre , the Compton MC worked with a range of producers on his sophomore album. The MC also maintained that he didn’t miss working with the Doc on the 2008 album, LAX. Game said collaborating with Dre was a huge motivating factor in putting together his latest project. “The motivation is number one, and foremost is always my children and second just being back with Dre,” Game said. The MC, who is renowned for his infamous rivalry with fellow Dre prot
‘It’s kind of different,’ she says of sound of new songs. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Selena Gomez Photo: Courtesy of Hollywood Records Selena Gomez is currently working on a slightly harder follow-up to her 2009 debut album, Kiss & Tell. The album, which she released with her band The Scene, was a pop record and Gomez recently told MTV News that for her sophomore effort she wants to go a bit funkier and a bit edgier. “We were gonna do a deluxe edition of my album, but we started on some songs, so we figured, ‘Why not? Let’s just go for a second one,’ ” she explained. “It’s kind of different — older — and it’s kind of got, like, a reggae sound.” Gomez is only in the early stages of the album-making process. Currently the band is trying to “fill it out,” but she knows she’d like to see if she can re-create the vibe from her single “Naturally” — but she’s unsure if she’s willing to take on the pressure of being the album’s main songwriter. “I don’t want it all to be on me,” Gomez said. So what about possible collaborators? “Well, I want to work with the producers who did “Naturally’ [Antonina Armato, Tim James and Devrim Karaoglu]. They are so sweet,” she said. “I’d love to work with Dr. Luke. I think he’s awesome,” she added about the “I Kissed a Girl” hitmaker. Gomez noted that on her first record, she made sure she picked tunes that her fans could easily relate to. “I wanted to make sure, A, I can relate to it and B, my fans can relate to it, and it’s something that I went through,” she explained. “And all of those songs are things that I went through, and that’s why I put that all together.” Related Artists Selena Gomez
