Star Trek 2 Gets A Title: Where Does It Rank In The Franchise?

What’s in a name? J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot sequel finally has one (per Deadline ) and despite my deepest, nerdiest hopes that early reports were on some crazy tip it’s been confirmed so I guess we’re stuck with it. I hope you’re ready for — drumroll please… Star Trek Into Darkness . Star Trek into what now !? I’m sure it was tough to come up with a naming convention that deviated from the original Trek movies’ Roman numeral + subtitle formula, or the TNG -era Trek s’ annoying penchant for terribly vague one-word descriptors (“Nemesis”? “Generations”?). At least those made more sense once you saw the movie. But Star Trek Into Darkness ? For starters, it sounds like Step Into Liquid and Step Up 2 The Streets , which makes me think Chris Pine and Co. are headed for a dance-off with outer space surfers to the music of a British glam rock band. On top of that, dropping the colon forces us to comprehend “Trek” as both a noun and a verb, which makes my brain hurt. Who wants to go Star Trekkin’ with J.J. Abrams? [*Commenter Elijah Sarkesian is right: Maybe someone just forgot the colon. If that’s the case then I forgive Abrams and will move Star Trek: Into Darkness into #10 right under Star Trek: Insurrection , because “insurrection” is at least an interesting vocabulary word.] Maybe I’m being too harsh on poor Star Trek 2 . Looking back on the Trek films, they weren’t all winners. Here’s how I’d rank the 12 franchise titles, from awesome ( KHAAAAAAAN! ) to turrible. 1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 2. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock 3. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 4. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier 5. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 6. Star Trek: The Motion Picture 7. Star Trek: First Contact 8. Star Trek 9. Star Trek: Insurrection 10. Star Trek: Nemesis 11. Star Trek: Generations 12. Star Trek Into Darkness Yep. Still not working. Sound off below. Together we can get through this, guys. Star Trek 2 is in theaters May 17, 2013. [ TrekMovie.com , Deadline ]

Rihanna Caught ‘Off-Guard’ By ‘Birthday Cake’ Controversy

Esquire U.K. covergirl talks about collaborating with her ex Chris Brown: ‘It never occurred to me how this was going to be a problem.’ By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna and Chris Brown in 2008 Photo: WireImage Rihanna might appear topless on the cover of Esquire U.K. , but it’s what she’s talking about on the inside of the magazine that’s grabbing all the headlines. In a lengthy back and forth with the reporter, Rihanna grows progressively more annoyed when asked about recording two tracks with her ex Chris Brown , given their history, including a 2009 assault. “Some love it, some hate it, some love it but still hate that we did it. But the response in the end has been incredible,” she tells Esquire , but soon tries to steer the conversation away from the topic and toward her meal. When asked again about the collaborations — remixes to the songs “Birthday Cake” and “Turn Up the Music” — Rihanna says it was “definitely” controversial: “The whole thing caught me a little off-guard to be honest … especially the amount of … negative attention. Because it never occurred to me how this was going to be a problem. It really didn’t.” She later insists, “I thought people were gonna be surprised that we finally did a record together, but I didn’t see how people could think it was a bad thing. In my mind, it was just music.” RiRi then notes she was surprised that because they recorded songs together, people jumped to the conclusion she and Brown were dating again. “OK. In a completely professional environment. And on a complete professional note. I mean, if I went back to him [as a girlfriend], then that’s a whole different discussion,” she said. “And if I ever do, then that’s something that y’all have to talk to me about when — if — that ever happens. Until then, look at it for what it is. “I think a lot of people jumped to an assumption that was incorrect, and they ended up looking stupid. Because of a song. How stupid. If I was together with every collaborator I worked with … f— my life.” In the end, Rihanna once again reiterated she didn’t have much else to say on the questions regarding her relationship, professional and personal, with Brown and how it relates to their work together. In a less-abrasive interview with Ryan Seacrest back in March , shortly after Ri and Brown dropped the two tracks, she called their work together “innocent.” “We did two records — one for my fans, one for his fans — and that way our fans can come together,” Rihanna explained at the time, brushing off the criticism even then. “There shouldn’t be a divide. It’s music, and it’s innocent.” Are you surprised Rihanna collaborated with Chris Brown? Sound off below! Related Artists Rihanna Chris Brown

Golden Globes Draw Nearly 17 Million Viewers

Ratings down a bit from last year’s show. By Gil Kaufman Ricky Gervais at the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: Getty Images Ricky Gervais
has said that his third go-round as host of the Golden Globes
would be his last. And while his latest Hollywood-tweaking gig on Sunday night didn’t draw the same headlines as last year’s scorched-earth takedown of Tinsel Town pomposity, ratings for the broadcast were steady. According to the Nielsen Co. the 69th annual Globes was seen by 16.8 million viewers, which is just below the 17 million who tuned in last year. And though some critics dented Gervais for being more controlled than he was last year, the Globes has already set the high-water mark for awards programs so far this season, beating out both the American Music Awards and the Emmys. MTV’s Movies team gave Gervais both a thumbs up and down
on his performance, praising him for “winning over Hollywood frenemies and delivering a very funny opening monologue.” But there was some bad news as well. “The comedian might have talked a big game heading into the show, but Gervais’ performance was a restrained one after last year’s hullabaloo. What’s great about the comedian is how he coats a witty mean-spiritedness with kindly, winking, you-know-I-still-love-you sugar. When your biggest dig is a fish-in-the-barrel attack on ‘The Tourist,’ you know you’ve caved to the worrywarts in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.” With big wins for George Clooney for “The Descendants” and a boost for the silent film “The Artist,” both movies solidified their spots as front-runners
of the awards season. Check out the 2012 Golden Globes winners , and don’t miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet! Taylor Swift Talks Relationship ‘Red Flags’ In Vogue

Country star says next album is about ‘absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak.’ By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift on the February cover of Vogue After much speculation, Taylor Swift has nabbed the February cover of Vogue, donning a big-rimmed, beige hat, hippie-chic clothes and fringy bangs. The singer not only opens up about her love of fashion in the article, but also goes into depth about her plans for the future, including her dreams to star in more movies and just what she has in store for her next album, which — believe it or not — will be about boys. “There’s just been this earth-shattering, not recent, but absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak,” she explained about the highly anticipated follow-up to 2010’s Speak Now. “And that will turn out to be what the next album is about. The only way that I can feel better about myself — pull myself out of that awful pain of losing someone — is writing songs about it to get some sort of clarity.” Swift, who says she’s currently happily single, goes on to say that she’s learned some of the major “red flags” in relationships, which include a guy who falls too fast without actually knowing her (“You can’t be in love with a Google search,” she said), a guy who can’t understand why she needs to have security, a guy who wants to “put her down” and a guy who needs too much privacy. While she’s learning more and more about dating, she’s also still trying to maneuver fame. Right now, she’s at the top of her game, but she knows that that can change at any time. “This is what I’ve wanted to do my whole life. It never freaks me out. Never. Ever,” she says. “But you know what does freak me out? When is the other shoe going to drop? I am so happy right now. So I am always living in fear. This can’t be real, right? This can’t really be my life. “The stakes are really high if you mess up, if you slack off and don’t make a good record, if you make mistakes based on the idea that you are larger than life and you can just coast,” she later says. “If you start thinking you’ve got it down, that’s when you run into trouble — either by getting complacent or becoming mouthy. And nobody likes that.” The article makes mention that Swift has been spending more time in L.A. looking for the right movie role. Currently she’s rumored to be playing Eponine in the A-list-filled big-screen adaptation of “Les Miserables.” “I fret about the future,” she explains. “What my next move should be. What the move after that should be. How I am going to sustain this. How do I evolve.” She let out a big sigh. “I get so ahead of myself. I’m like, ‘What am I going to be doing at 30?’ But there’s no way to know that! So it’s this endless, mind-boggling equation that you’ll never figure out. I overanalyze myself into being a big bag of worries.” Adele is the next rumored pop cover girl for the fashion magazine. The singer appeared on the cover of October’s Vogue U.K. What did you think about the February Vogue cover? Sound off below! Related Artists Taylor Swift

Russell Brand Slides Off Wedding Ring In Pre-Divorce Video

Comedian jokingly removed band in November announcement for his college tour. By Jocelyn Vena Russell Brand Photo: Colin MacFarlane / Splash News A little over a month before he announced he would be taking off his wedding ring for good, Russell Brand jokingly took off his band when he announced his college tour. The video announcement, which he (and Katy Perry ) posted in mid-November , seems to be getting some attention thanks to Brand’s pre-split jovial nature about removing his ring and learning about what happens in sorority houses. He opens the clip saying, “Hello Americans, this is a time of terrific change and the perfect time for me to go on a tour.” He then rambles on about American college life, adding, “I don’t know nothing about your college culture. This, for me, is going to be an educational experience. “Now in each of these cases I want to meet people from sororities and fraternities,” he continued. “I don’t know what a sorority is except for the things I’ve seen on Nudevista; that they are sort of sex clubs for women. Fraternities, that’s a bit like the film ‘Animal House’ or ‘Social Network.’ These are the only references I have.” Noting that he hoped to create worlds of “decadence” on the road, he further teased, “We are going to change college life forever. First of all, I’m going to understand it, then we’re going to change it, and then we’re gonna try and understand the new version.” As the video ends, Brand slides off his ring, with this message, “This is going to be a week of revolution, a week of occupation, and, more important, I’m going to learn firsthand about sororities. I’m going to place this somewhere very, very safe for the next week,” he said about his ring. At the time, his former wife tweeted her support for the shows. In fact, she was the person who tweeted out the video originally. “My [foul] mouthed Hubby @rustyrockets is playing a few mid-west/east-coast shows starting tonight onwards!” she wrote. “SUPPORT!” The video’s resurgence comes just one day after Perry announced she’d no longer attend Wednesday’s People’s Choice Awards. ‘Prometheus’ Trailer: Five Key Elements

Ridley Scott’s teaser, featuring Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron fighting for their lives, is reminiscent of ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner.’ By Kara Warner Photo: 20th Century Fox If you’re a fan of movie trailers, consider your holiday wants and wishes fulfilled now that the teaser for Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” has dropped. It’s the fourth trailer released this week for a hugely anticipated 2012 film, following “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Wrath of the Titans” and “The Hobbit.” Here’s a look at five key elements that deserve MTV News’ over-analysis: Plot Tease We still don’t know a lot about the story line in this film, but this one-minute spot sheds a lot of light on what the action will center around: a team of explorers, scientists and anthropologists sets out on a journey to find clues to the origin of our species. “What they found could be our end,” we’re told in cold, blue type, before quick cuts of what looks to be death and destruction. And although the prequel rumors have been shot down by those involved, there is room here to interpret it as such. Not to mention the title: In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the titan who stole fire from Mt. Olympus and gave it to humans. If the humans in the film are searching for their origin, maybe it is Prometheus, in some way, shape or form. Lost in Space/Discovery of Life on Other Planets Unsurprisingly, there are several gorgeous shots of space vehicles, spaceships, spacesuits, etc. that help properly accentuate the size and scope of what it would be like to be up/out there, as well as how big this film really is. Director Ridley Scott shot the film in 3-D and serves up a few hints to the beautiful technology at play, though there is still a grittiness to it all. This is not friendly, bright and shiny unexplored territory; it’s dark, dangerous, deep space. And then there are the scenes at the end of the trailer that look to take place on another planet, in another galaxy. There is dry, dusty terrain and ancient-looking symbols, a towering horseshoe-shaped totem of some sort, that looks to be either crumbling to the ground, or it is moving of its own accord, beginning a small war between the natives and the humans who’ve discovered them. The New Ripley(s) It’s hard to talk about Ridley Scott and an “Alien”-esque movie without thinking about Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, one of the most bad-ass protagonists in film history. There’s no replacing Ripley, but Scott has enlisted two very capable ladies to carry the torch: Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron. From what the trailer shows, both women will be fighting for their lives, but Rapace seems to be the most Ripley-esque, particularly in one shot where she is hanging upside down, being held by someone or something. The resemblance is uncanny. And let’s not forget about the rest of the cast, of whom we get only brief glimpses: Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Rafe Spall. That Ridley Scott Touch The trailer is cold, calculated and just too cool. Just like Scott has said himself, if “Prometheus” isn’t an “Alien” prequel, the two films definitely share the same DNA — not to mention a few “Blade Runner”-esque elements thrown in for good measure. And as is the case with most of Scott’s films, the effects are far more practical than CG. The world of “Prometheus” is set in a distant future, but not too distant. It’s big, bold and, very likely, terrifying. The Alien(s) As much as we might have hoped to see some big, bad aliens in this trailer, all we get are hints of an unidentified, menacing force out there. In one brief scene, the team happens upon an area full of small, perfectly arranged casings that could be artifacts or alien eggs, we don’t know. But we do see one of the humans’ helmets enveloped by a mysterious gas, followed by a loud, painful scream. There is a quick shot of the head of something being examined in a lab, what looks like it might be an alien ship of some sort hovering over dusty terrain, followed by brief shots of human suffering at the hands of something we can’t quite make out. Yet. “Prometheus” hits theaters June 8, 2012. Behind-the-scenes clip shows singer in London with a blond bob and gold grill. By James Dinh Rihanna in her “You Da One” teaser Photo: Def Jam Even though “We Found Love” is still ruling the charts, Rihanna is gearing up for the release of her second Talk That Talk single, “You Da One,” by releasing a behind-the-scenes teaser for the Melina Matsoukas-directed clip. In the two-minute montage , the RihannaNavy get several glimpses at a blond-bobbed Rih with a fitted gold grill and a slew of outfit changes. For one of her ensembles, the pop titan dons a gold chain necklace and midriff-baring two-piece as she grinds up against a checkered wall with life-size playing cards nearby. Another scene finds the singer in a white tank top and tattered jean shorts, swinging a cane in between two brick buildings. “We’re in London town!” the chart-topper tells the cameraman while the Dr. Luke-produced track plays in the background. “We tried to shoot our first setup outside, but it started to rain really, really hard. Then it stopped after we had to switch setups. … I’m running on one hour of sleep. I’m not even going to remember this tomorrow. My eyes are burning a little bit.” Rihanna has been dropping teasers for the “You Da One” visual for some time now. Two weeks ago, she released a clip of herself getting fitted for her grill. And just a few days ago, the singer took to Twitter to share another still, which depicted the star topless, leaning back and blowing smoke into the air . “#YOUDAONEVIDEO you know im already in trouble 4 this but, i like to keep yall in the loop,” she wrote. Fans can also expect to be kept in the loop about the video for “Take Care,” Rihanna’s collabo with Drake . MTV News recently caught up with Drizzy, who shared his expectations for the video for the Jamie xx-produced song, saying, “I want to make it perfect — the best video I’ve done to date — so I’m just taking my time.” Are you excited for Rihanna’s “You Da One” video?
