The-Dream Takes Aim At Weeknd, Shuts It Down On Tour

Def Jam singer/producer blazed into New York City on Monday on his Kill the Lights Tour, igniting an R&B beef along the way. By Rebecca Thomas The-Dream Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images NEW YORK — When you think about it, it’s only fitting that Maybach Music MCs Wale, Meek Mill and Stalley held court on Monday night as The-Dream rocked the second of a two-night run at SOB’s. Among the ranks of R&B crooners, few have more rap swag than Mr. Terius Nash: From the Roc-A-Fella chain to the vintage throwback jerseys, the singer laced up, slinging NBA metaphors like any good rap star. Then, as if to solidify his credentials, he waded into an R&B beef with the Weekend . When Dream visited our “RapFix Live” late last month, the Love King told host Sway that he had no conflict with Drake’s enigmatic homey. “No, it’s not a beef record to the Weeknd,” The-Dream insisted after a fan tweeted asking about subliminals in his “Ghetto,” from his 1977 mixtape. Fans have been quick to draw comparisons between the Grammy winner and the upstart for their atmospheric singing and production styles. With destination blog Rap Radar hosting the proceedings, it was hard to believe the Georgia crooner hadn’t given the Weeknd a lyrical left-hook. “See I created this sound/ Yes, sir, I shut it down / There’s only one #1 / These other n—as are my sons,” he sang before the sound dropped out for an emphatic pause. The Toronto singer wasted no time, responding with a few Twitter lashes in the wee hours on Tuesday morning (March 13): “I was raised old fashioned, you get at me, i get at you… ain’t no sideways sh– about it.” The Weeknd wasn’t the only one who came under fire though on a balmy Monday night in NY. Dream opened with the beautifully layered kiss-off ” Wake Me When It’s Over,” widely perceived to be a missive aimed at his ex-wife, singer Christina Milian. “You knew it was over / I knew it was over,” he sang before alluding to tabloid pictures that showed the still-married Dream splashing on a beach with a lady friend back in 2010. When he wasn’t airing folks out, The-Dream kept at it, making the case for R&B, a genre pronounced dead more times than we care to count. The soft-spoken Def Jam artist alluded as well to his two-year hiatus from the stage, explaining that he was getting back on his square. He treated the room — filled with as many fellas as there were ladies — to standouts from 1977, including the addictive “Wedding Crasher” and “Used to Be.” If there was any complaint about the intimate show, it’s that an artist of Dream’s caliber is more than ready for backup singers over the backing tracks that sometimes threatened to overpower his vocals. After a wardrobe quick change from his Chicago Bulls ensemble, the newly trim Dream returned in a fitted leather and New York Knicks jersey combo. Launching into crowd faves like “Shawty Is a 10,” “Falsetto,” “Walking on the Moon” and “Fancy,” the singer showcased his Prince-inflected flow. A Kim Kardashian lookalike got a personal treat, as Dream pulled her onstage and grinded her through a … slow seduction. He didn’t hesitate to profess his love for the female anatomy either, in straight graphic terms. “I love makin’ records,” Dream told the crowd. But it’s getting to share them live that’s truly inspiring, he admitted before shutting it down with the ladies’ anthem “Rockin’ That Thang.” Share your reviews of The-Dream show in the comments or tweet us @MTVRapFix! Adele’s 21, One Year Later: Steady As She Goes

Bigger Than the Sound takes a look back at 21 ‘s rather remarkable ride on the one-year anniversary of its release in the U.S. By James Montgomery Adele in her “Someone Like You” video Photo: Columbia Back in olde tymes, if something was a hallmark of consistency and dependability, it was proclaimed to be “so reliable you could set your watch to it.” This was high praise, and not just because watches were, like, the iPhones of their day (minus “Angry Birds,” of course). No, there was a time when reliability was actually celebrated in this country, and everything unerring, unchanging or uninterrupted — from Studebakers to Johnny Unitas’ haircut — was thusly awarded watch-setting status. Not surprisingly, that’s not exactly how things work anymore. Although, one could make the argument that Adele is doing her best to bring reliability off the back burner (back burners were also fairly common back then, both as a heating source and a simmering surface). Exactly one year ago today , she released her blockbuster 21 album in the U.S., and in the 52 weeks since , it’s not only broken records, won an armload of Grammys and singlehandedly revitalized the record industry, it’s also become the most dependable thing since Johnny U’s flattop. To wit, 21 has spent a staggering 40 percent of the past year atop the Billboard albums chart, has never been lower than #7, and has held steady in the top three since December. It not only survived challenges from Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Beyonc

Exclusive: Taylor Swift Gets Moody In ‘Safe & Sound’ Video Tease

Get a sneak peek at the ‘Hunger Games’ soundtrack video before it premieres Monday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift in her “Safe & Sound” video Photo: Big Machine On Monday, Taylor Swift will debut the video for “Safe & Sound,” her Civil Wars-assisted single from the “Hunger Games” soundtrack, during “MTV First: Taylor Swift” at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an exclusive chat with Swift herself on MTV.com. But you don’t have to wait until Monday to catch a sneak peek of the emotional video. In a mini-tease, Swift is wearing a long, white dress. Her hair and makeup are not done — it’s a far cry from the red-carpet-ready Taylor fans are used to seeing. She sings the moody track while she walks through the woods — an obvious connection to the “Hunger Games” film and book that inspired the track. After Monday’s video premiere — which will also air live on MTV’s channels in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa — the Grammy-nominated singer will sit down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway for a 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Fans of the superstar can get in on the action by submitting questions via Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtags #AskTaylor or #MTVFirst. CMT will air “Safe & Sound” at 8 p.m. ET, the same time the music video will debut exclusively online at MTV.com, CMT.com, VH1.com and MTV’s international sites. On Tuesday morning, VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live” will feature the video at 10 a.m. ET/PT. The “Hunger Games” soundtrack , which also features Arcade Fire and the Decemberists, drops March 20; the movie hits theaters days later, on March 23. And for those non-Swifties wondering why Taylor chose Monday to drop the video, it’s the 13th and that happens to be the star’s lucky number . Don’t miss the premiere of Taylor Swift’s “Safe & Sound” video during “MTV First: Taylor Swift” on Monday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an exclusive chat with Swift about her “Hunger Games” clip on MTV.com. Drake Has ‘Good Taste,’ A$AP Rocky Says After Co-Sign

New York MC is ready to take his music worldwide, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts A$AP Rocky Photo: MTV News A$AP Rocky has been pegged as hip-hop’s next big thing. That phrase might get attached to someone (e.g. Drake, Wiz Khalifa) or some group (see: OFWGKTA) every few months, but A$AP is the first “next big thing” to come out of New York in a while. No offense to French Montana, Fred the Godson or anyone else, but very few up-and-coming New York rappers have garnered as much love on both hip-hop and alternative blogs. And they certainly haven’t been featured in The New York Times — especially with just a handful of songs. When MTV News caught up with A$AP Rocky in New York’s Lower East Side, he said he had his sights focused on bigger things than the Big Apple. “I live here, and New York raised me, New York made me, so at the end of the day, it’s all love for New York. But I appeal to everybody. I want to appeal to people in West Bumblef—, Germany,” A$AP said. “That’s what it’s all about. I can appeal to anybody. Anybody that was raised in poverty, middle class, low middle class, day-to-day regular things, they can relegate to me, because I speak that trill sh–.” A$AP Rocky — born Rakim Mayers — said he started rapping at age 8 but didn’t really start taking it seriously until his late teens/ early 20s. The Harlem MC said, at first, he didn’t know if he was Kanye West, Kid Cudi or what, but once he found himself artistically, other people started to really appreciate his work. He also credited his three main producers — ASAP Ty Beats, SpaceGhostPurpp and Clams Casino — with developing his sound. Ty Beats has produced Rocky’s two most recognizable songs: “Purple Swag,” a sizzurpy ode to Houston hip-hop, and the boastful, melodic “Peso.” Clams Casino rose to fame producing for Lil B the Based God, and Miami’s SpaceGhostPurpp, owner of hip-hop’s best name, is the producer Rocky goes to for his “trill sh–.” “I think my sound is a sound that was inspired by all hip-hop from different regions, cultures [and] times,” he said. “My sound is everything mixed into one. It’s the future. Basically, you don’t have to be limited anymore, and you can sound how you want to sound. That’s natural for us.” “A$AP” is an acronym and almost a surname adopted by Rocky’s crew, and he said it can mean a variety of things, from Always Strive and Prosper to Assassinating Snitches and Police, but Rocky liked Acronym Symbolizing Any Purpose. While most people wait on the release of his debut mixtape, Live. Love. A$AP, on Halloween, he’s already been added to Drake’s Club Paradise Tour. Rocky said he was honored by a co-sign, not only because it was Drake, but because he truly respected the Toronto MC. “He’s in a position to where if he co-signs somebody, it’s valid, and he’s a real lyricist, and he’s got good taste. I mean, look at his music. Therefore, when he comes to listen to people like me and he gets inspired and then wants to take us out on tour, it just shows you he’s a real dude.” Have you checked out A$AP Rocky yet? Jennifer Garner Records Solo Sex Session for Her New Movie Butter

Now that we’ve got your attention… Jennifer Garner stars in the new satirical comedy Butter as a repressed Midwestern housewife whose lone creative outlet is butter carving. But despite the sexy example set by Olivia Wilde as a lesbian stripper, this movie won’t do anything to break skingy Jennifer’s non-nude streak; her only sex scene, where she screws Hugh Jackman in the backseat of a car, is off-camera. However, we do hear the two of them getting it on, an experience that Jackman told the Huffington Post was made skinfinitely more awkward by the sound guy’s request that they, uh, perform separately: “We both had to kind of perform our version, in character, of sex while the other one is quiet. And it was impossible not to be laughing your head off while the other person is doing it. That was humiliating… Guys never sound good during sex. It’s impossible to sound good.” Now, Jennifer on the other hand…we’re usually visual kind of guys, but we bet she sounds amazing . How much you wanna bet the sound guy just wanted a tape without any annoying Jackman grunts for his own perv-sonal use ? See all the sexiest moments from Jennifer Garner, including her butt-baring scene from Alias , right here at MrSkin.com
