Blink-182, Death Cab For Cutie Remember 1991: When Rock Rocked

With Nevermind anniversary weeks away, music’s biggest bands reflect on the other indispensible albums from a great year for rock. By James Montgomery My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless Photo: Sire On September 24, Nirvana’s epochal Nevermind album turns 20, a milestone that will be marked with much coverage, celebration and consternation in the media … not to mention a sundry of other events, including a high-profile benefit concert at Seattle’s Experience Music Project and a Jon Stewart-hosted Q&A with Nirvana’s surviving members. And understandably so. After all, Nevermind was a game-changer in every sense of the term — the kind of album that brought about seismic shifts in music, fashion and culture in general, one that defined a generation and, as such, deserves to be mythologized. And, in the coming weeks, we suspect you’ll see no shortage of stories that do just that. And while Nevermind casts an indelibly lengthy shadow, it bears mention that there was no shortage of other magical, massive and equally mythological albums that hit stores in 1991 … ones that, had Nirvana never broken through, would probably be getting the royal treatment right now. In 1991, rock truly rocked, so, in celebration of that fact, we’ve asked some of today’s biggest bands to discuss their favorite albums from that rather amazing year. Don’t worry, we’ll give Nevermind its due … but right now, we’re paying tribute to 1991’s other indispensible albums, in the words of their biggest fans. Dinosaur Jr., Green Mind Sludgy, somnambulant fourth album from Amherst, Massachusetts’ premier purveyors of bad-posture rock, Green Mind represents Dino Jr. at a great divide: Not only is it their first album without original member Lou Barlow, it’s also their first for major label Sire Records. Still, neither of those factors managed to sap its power, as mastermind J Mascis shouldered the load (it’s basically a solo album) on tracks like the squalling “The Wagon” and the roiling “Puke & Cry.” Of course, the band would later reconcile, but Green Mind still stands as a high-water mark, one that, from its iconic cover image to its shambolic moments of pure grandiosity, still stands the test of time. As remembered by Mark Hoppus, Blink-182 : “I got it when it came out and I just loved it, from the second that I listened to it. And I remember going to watch them at the Hollywood Palladium, and I think, actually, Nirvana opened that show maybe, or maybe not. [ Editor’s note: Nirvana did, in fact, open for Dino Jr. at the Palladium in June 1991. ] But they played the Palladium, and it was the loudest show that I’d ever been to and my ears rang for three days afterwards and I was deathly afraid that I’d permanently ruined my hearing, which I probably did, but it was well worth it.” My Bloody Valentine, Loveless The rare album that can be summarized entirely by its cover, MBV’s Loveless is 48-odd minutes of guitars slowly corroding, collapsing and combusting into a gloriously woozy, decidedly pink hue. Then again, you should probably listen to it, if only to marvel at the sheer size of the thing: an epic sonic collage that echoes for days, full of ringing, winging chords, ruddy drum loops and ethereal, barely there vocals. It sounded like nothing else at the time and, really, that’s still true today. Recorded in 19 different studios over the course of two years, it brought the band and its label, Creation, to the brink and was so huge an endeavor (in every regard) that, 20 years later, MBV have yet to record the follow-up. But that hasn’t stopped an entire generation of musicians from taking cues from Kevin Shields’ masterful din, most notably, the rather tricky art of learning how not to play guitar. As remembered by Brian Oblivion, Cults : “In the same vein as Nevermind, Loveless is another game-changing album. There’s that clich

Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka ‘Smash The Game’ On Ferrari Boyz

Check out ‘RapFix Live’ Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com for more from the duo. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News Jay-Z and Kanye West aren’t the only rappers dropping a collab album this week. As soloists, Atlanta’s Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame have taken their Southern-drenched sound worldwide, and on Tuesday (August 9), the duo released Ferrari Boyz, an LP Waka said was inspired by the people. “Fans were like, ‘Man, y’all need to do somethin’ together, work with people in the industry,’ ” Waka told MTV News’ Sway. “See, we could agree with one of the statements: We’ll work together, but the industry folks, they industry, you follow me?” On Ferrari Boyz, the 1017 representatives keep everything in-house. The majority of the album was produced by Lex Luger and Southside, both of whom contributed largely to Waka’s first album, Flockaveli, in 2010. As far as guest appearances go, the Ferrari Boyz didn’t call on any of their past big-name collaborators like Rick Ross, Diddy or Usher. Instead, underground MCs like Tity Boi (a.k.a. 2 Chainz) and Georgia rapper Rocko rounded out the track list. “Man, we just came to smash the game — point blank, period,” Waka said. “They chasin’ our sound, folks’ singles is on our sound, and we might as well just go ‘head and give it all to ’em.” For Gucci, who was freed from Fulton County Jail in July after a three-month stint, working with his rap prot

After looking at preliminary box office estimates, “the sound of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” could easily refer to screaming fans and stacking money. According to early estimates, the eighth and final Potter film grossed an estimated $43.5 million from midnight shows alone, putting it well on the way to break the single day box office record and compete for the all time three day record… Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : /Film Discovery Date : 16/07/2011 01:27 Number of articles : 2

My name is Megan, I’m 15 years old from Washington State and the…

My name is Megan, I’m 15 years old from Washington State and the best day of my life was July 13 th  2010. That’s the day I talked to Justin Bieber and was front row at his concert. My mom ordered the ultimate V.I.P package for my friend Kaitlyn and I. About a week later, we received the news we were sitting seats 43 and 44 in row 1!  I was thinking, no way did I get FRONT ROW tickets.. this must be a joke. To pay back my mom for the tickets, Kaitlyn and I had to do a lot of yard/house work almost every day, but it was worth it. Finally it was July 13 th ! We drove down to Everett Event Center around 12 pm. Kaitlyn and I met our friend Taylor there and our mom’s saved us spots in line as we went to the other side of the building to watch the tour buses come in. We then saw all of Justin’s dancers get off the bus, then we saw DAN KANTER. We started screaming and Dan looked up at us, smiled and waved. We then went back to the line and got our V.I.P lanyards to wear we walked into the arena and waited to go in to the sound check. We were sitting in the front row at the sound check. First the dancers came out and Ryan talked to us for a bit. Then the amazing moment happened when Justin walked out on stage. I screamed at the top of my lungs. Justin talked to us for a bit and asked if we had questions. I raised my hand super high and Justin called on me. I asked, “What’s your favorite part about performing?” looked at me smiled and said, “To see all you beautiful ladies in the audience.” I think that’s the moment where I thought I was dreaming.   After questions, Justin sang the Dan Kanter song with us and my friend Taylor and I sang at the top of our lungs and Dan gave his pick necklace to Taylor. Then a girl close to me said, “It’smy birthday so I decided to yell, “It’s my birthday in a week!” Then Justin said he will sing happy birthday to all his fans with birthdays! All my dreams were coming true, I felt like I was in heaven. Near the end of the soundcheck, the girl next to me was talking about how her granddaughter was related to Chuck Norris, so I yelled “JUSTIN!” He said, “Who said that?” and walked over to us. She said, “Chuck Norris is my uncle!” and Justin was so amazed he wanted to touch her so she got to go touch him.  After the soundcheck was over, we went to the V.I.P party were I met Justin’s dancer Marvin and got a signed Justin concert program. Then it was time for Justin’s concert. I was so amazed when we went in sat in our seats in THE FRONT ROW! After a lady gave us wristbands, we got to stand right in the middle of the front row and Kenny was standing right in front of us!  Kenny came up and tapped my hand, I still have no idea why? Justin came out singing Love Me and I was so close to him, I felt like I was on stage too. I took pictures and video of the whole concert to remember it forever. It was the best day ever! Justin bent down during OLLG and sang to me.  My favorite was That Should Be Me. Justin even came over and threw me his towel then they put me on THE BIG SCREEN!  All I can say is dreams come true…. NEVER SAY NEVER – Megan (@MeganIsHerself) Read more: My name is Megan, I’m 15 years old from Washington State and the…

What does this sound like: A menthol-based substance that can be styled into bracelets, necklaces, and large blue clumps, which feel like giant ball of confetti filled with air bubbles. Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Big Debut: Where Does It Rank?

Gaga’s latest posted the 10th-biggest week in SoundScan history. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage By now, you’re probably aware that Lady Gaga’s Born This Way is the #1 album in the country, selling an impressive 1,108,000 copies in its first week of release. You’re probably also aware that her first-week tally is the highest in more than six years, since 50 Cent’s The Massacre moved more than 1,140,000 copies back in March 2005. But what you might not be aware of is just where Born This Way ‘s big debut ranks among the all-time greats. According to Billboard , since the debut of the SoundScan era in 1991, only 17 albums have sold more than 1 million copies in a week … and Born This Way ‘s bow lands on the very edge of the top 10. Ahead of BTW on the list are a myriad of albums from early-2000s teen-pop sensations, including two released from ‘NSYNC — No Strings Attached, which holds the record for the biggest one-week sales number in SoundScan history (it sold a whopping 2.4 million copies in 2000), and the follow-up, 2001’s Celebrity, which sold 1.89 million in a week — the Backstreet Boys’ Black & Blue and Millennium, and Britney Spears’ Oops! … I Did It Again. Eminem also placed a pair of albums in the all-time top 10 — 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP and 2002’s The Eminem Show — and 50 Cent and the Beatles are represented too. In fact, the top 10 is dominated by male artists: Only Spears (and now Gaga) have made the cut. And of the 17 albums to break the million mark in the SoundScan era, only five are by female artists, including Whitney Houston’s “The Bodyguard” Soundtrack, Norah Jones’ Feels Like Home and Taylor Swift’s Speak Now also accomplished the feat. So while Born This Way ‘s debut is certainly massive, it’s by no means the most massive … Here’s a look at the list of albums that have sold more than 1 million copies in a week, with sales data courtesy of Nielsen SoundScan. (And yes, Limp Bizkit is on the list.)
