Hurricane Irene Forces NYC Mayor Bloomberg To Order Mandatory Evacuations For The First Time In History!!!

That Empire State of Mind is nice and all but it’s time to get the heck out of dodge folks! Hurricane Irene is coming and officials in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have already declared a State of Emergency in their states. Mayor Bloomberg has also asked something of New Yorkers that has never been asked before — he wants them to evacuate, especially if there home lies in a coastal area. Yup that means Lower Manhattan too! With Hurricane Irene speeding relentlessly toward the East Coast, officials announced plans to evacuate low-lying areas in New York City and shut down the sprawling subway and transit system. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg ordered a mandatory evacuation — something he said the city had never done before — of coastal areas in all five boroughs, including all of the Rockaways; Battery Park City and the financial district in Lower Manhattan; and Governor’s Island. The evacuation covered 250,000 people in and around what the city calls Zone A low-lying areas who, the mayor said, should get out before the storm swept in. “You only have to look at the weather maps to understand how big this storm is and how unique it is,” the mayor said at a news conference, “and it’s heading basically for us.” Underscoring what he and other officials said was the seriousness of the situation, President Obama granted a request from Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York to declare the state a federal emergency even before the hurricane arrived, according to the White House. And the mayor’s announcement prompted a cascade of cancellations for Saturday and Sunday: Broadway shows; the Mets’ games against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field; performances by the Dave Matthews Band on Governor’s Island; an outdoor film festival of operas at Lincoln Center, among many others. Officials said the subway shutdown was prompted mainly by wind estimates that suggested the hurricane could rock subway cars where they run above ground. The commuter rail lines that serve Long Island, Westchester County and Connecticut will also be shut down, as will NJTransit operations in New Jersey. NJTransit will suspend service at noon Saturday. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York said that a half dozen bridges — including the George Washington Bridge, the Robert F. Kennedy Triboro Bridge, the Throgs Neck Bridge and the Whitestone Bridge — would be closed if winds reached 60 miles an hour for more than a short time. Officials decided to go ahead with the shutdowns and evacuations, which they had first mentioned as a possibility at a City Hall briefing on Thursday, because, the mayor said, “Irene is now bearing down on us at a faster speed than it was.” As he stepped up the plans on Friday, the city was already evacuating hospitals and nursing homes in low-lying areas. State officials continued arrangements for coordinating emergency services and restoring electricity if the storm does the kind of damage many fear. Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said that all lanes of 28-mile stretch of a major highway in Ocean County would go in only one direction — westward — beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday to help speed the trip away from Long Beach Island, which is connected to the mainland by only a single bridge. Those preparations came as states of emergency remained in effect in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The mayor said that 91 evacuation centers and shelters would be open by 4 p.m. Friday for people who could not stay in their homes. The mayor had said on Thursday that the city was ordering nursing homes and hospitals in those areas to evacuate residents and patients beginning at 8 a.m. Friday unless they received special permission from state and city health officials, among them the city’s health commissioner, Dr. Thomas A. Farley, who, the mayor noted, was chairman of the community health sciences department at Tulane University when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. That evacuation order covered 22 hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities for older people. The mayor said city beaches would be closed on Saturday and Sunday and would remain closed “until they can op safely.” “Please, please, please, don’t go in the water,” the mayor said. “Tides will be much stronger than people can cope with.” In Connecticut, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said the state was considering widespread precautionary shutdowns of highways at midnight Saturday. He urged residents in areas that had “ever experienced flooding” to take steps to leave those areas by midnight Saturday as well. Mr. Malloy said officials were preparing for “tremendous tree damage” and the loss of electricity across the entire state. “Not just for a few hours,” he added at a briefing on Friday. “Days and weeks.” Can you imagine? Lights out for weeks!!! This storm is the real deal. Please everyone, if you live in one of the areas affected take these warning seriously and make sure you have a plan in place in case disaster strikes. Source

R.I.P.: R&B Legend Nick Ashford (Of Ashford & Simpson) Loses Fight To Cancer At Age 70

Sad, sad news for the music lovers tonight. Via WashingtonPost.com : Nick Ashford, one-half of the legendary Motown songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson that penned elegant, soulful classics for the likes of Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye and funk hits for Chaka Khan and others, died Monday at age 70, his former publicist said. Ashford, who along with wife Valerie Simpson wrote some of Motown’s biggest hits, died in a New York City hospital, said Liz Rosenberg, who also was Ashford’s longtime friend. He had been suffering from throat cancer and had undergone radiation treatment, she said. Though they had some of their greatest success at Motown with classics like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Reach Out And Touch Somebody’s Hand” by Ross and “You’re All I Need To Get By” by Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Ashford & Simpson also created classics for others, like the anthem “I’m Every Woman” by Khan (and later remade by Whitney Houston). They also had success writing for themselves: Perhaps the biggest known hit sung by them was the 1980s hit “Solid As A Rock.” Ashford and Simpson’s relationship stretched more than four decades. They met in 1964 in a New York City church; Ashford, a South Carolina native, had come to the city to pursue a dance career. Simpson was a music student, and after connecting with her, they decided to start to write songs together. Their first major success occurred when they came up with “Let’s Go Get Stoned” for Ray Charles. That song became a huge hit, and soon, they came to the attention of Motown Records and began penning hits for their artists. The started out writing for Gaye and Terrell; in fact, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” was originally their hit, until Ross later rerecorded it and made it her signature song. The duo, who were married for 38 years, helped sell millions of records for several artists. They also had success as their own entity, but despite “Solid As a Rock,” their hits dwarfed those that they penned for others. In recent years, the pair continued to perform. They also were owners of the New York City restaurant Sugar Bar, where many top names and emerging talents would put on showcases. Ashford is survived by his wife and two daughters.

REVIEW: Allegory Alert! John Sayles’ Amigo Riffs on American Imperialism

The first American voice that is heard in Amigo , John Sayles’s ponderous cine-play set during the U.S. occupation of the Philippines at the turn of the 19th century, rips through the air with the brutal dissonance of an artillery shell. The torqued South Carolina accent of actor Brian Lee Franklin — cursing out the country’s “little monkeys” — announces the arrival of an American squadron in the tiny Philippine “baryo” where they and Amigo remain for the next two hours. Along with an introductory crack about “hearts and minds” made by squad Lieutenant Compton (Garret Dillahunt), that private’s twanging epithet puts the audience on Code Orange allegory alert.

DJ Khaled Denies Rick Ross/ Young Jeezy Beef

‘Beef … we’re here to get money. We’re here to make great music,’ Khaled tells MTV News. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Rob Markman DJ Khaled Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images DJ Khaled just released his fifth album, We the Best Forever, which features contributions by Rick Ross and Young Jeezy . But not on the same track, which shouldn’t be surprising considering the two rappers have an ongoing feud. But according to DJ Khaled, that is no longer the case. “They don’t have a beef,” Khaled vehemently told MTV News. “That’s people that would probably try to stir things up that have a beef. First of all, Ross is my brother. Jeezy is a great friend of mine. And if they did, I would be the guy in the middle [that would] be like, ‘Stop!’ That’s just what I do. Beef … we’re here to get money. We’re here to make great music. What’s beef gon’ do? But if somebody disrespects you and try you, you gotta do what you gotta do. It is what it is. But we hope it don’t come to that in life. And that’s just in any situation.” Despite the Miami DJ and producer’s assertions that there is no friction between Jeezy and Rozay, the relationship between the two rappers can be described as cold at best. It began in August last year when Jeezy released the freestyle “Death B4 Dishonor.” Rapping over the instrumental to Ross’ hit “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast),” many speculated the lines “How you blowin’ money fast?/ You don’t know the crew/ Oh, you part of the fam?/ Sh–, I never knew,” were aimed at Ross. However, the Snowman said that was not the case. Since then, both have taken jabs at each other in song and in the press. Then in November 2010, footage appeared of Jeezy in Miami rhetorically saying, “Where is your favorite rapper at?” when he was asked about Ross. To this Ross told U.K. DJ Tim Westwood, “If you really have an issue, put it on the table and handle it like a G.” Nevertheless, Khaled, who has had his own issues with 50 Cent , is so confident in his skills at musical diplomacy that he feels he could get the Snowman and Rozay on a song together right now. “I’ve done it plenty of times already,” Khaled, who featured both Ross and Jeezy on two songs (“Fed Up,” “Put Your Hands Up”) from his 2010 album Victory, said. “Of course I could. You want me to go make one, no problem I’ll go do it. Matter of fact, I’ll do it just for the fun of it. But absolutely I can do that. Ross is my brother, and Jeezy is my brother. That ain’t no problem, that’s easy.” Related Artists DJ Khaled Rick Ross (Hip-Hop) Young Jeezy

Taylor Swift Is ‘Totally Cool,’ Tour Openers NeedToBreathe Say

South Carolina rock band tells MTV News Swift is ‘very pro for somebody who’s 21.’ By Jocelyn Vena NeedToBreathe Photo: Marc Broussely/ Redferns Even at the tender age of 21, Taylor Swift is one of the most poised superstars on the planet. And she has quite the reputation for being incredibly professional to work with. But when her tour openers NeedToBreathe finally got the chance to meet her, they were actually surprised by how true that is. “Well, she won’t let us look at her [for] long,” Bear Reinhart joked to MTV News. Brother Bo added, “She wears, like, a veil over her face the whole time, like, no eye contact.” Of course, that is anything but true, and Bear later added, “Honestly, it’s been really not like that at all. She was totally cool the first day … very pro for somebody who’s 21.” Bo continued, “[She’s] very down to earth and easy [to work with].” As the story goes, Swift handpicked the South Carolina band to be the opening act on her Speak Now tour , which is currently hitting up the country. And the band finds it hard to believe that they are playing to a sea of screaming teenage girls in arenas and stadiums night after night. “We thought when people called us, we thought they were joking,” Bear said of learning they’d be opening for the comely singer. “I think partly because it’s Taylor Swift and partly because we’re not really a country band and her fans are obviously a little younger than ours sometimes. But it’s been cool because she genuinely likes music and she likes our band and she’s been really sweet about the whole thing. “We met her and she was kind of nervous around us,” he continued. “I guess [because] we’re older than her, but she’s like a real fan. She’s like, ‘What songs are you gonna play?’ So that’s good, to be appreciated on a tour like that. Obviously, we could, like, never see her again, but she’s been great.” Related Artists Taylor Swift needtobreathe
