SMH: Police are investigating the “racially motivated” beating of a 27-year-old man who was walking home from midtown bars early Saturday when he said he was jumped by five to eight men who shouted “Trayvon” before the attack. The exclamation was an apparent reference to Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old from Miami who was shot and killed in February walking back to his father’s girlfriend’s house in Sanford. His shooter, George Zimmerman, has not been charged. The case of Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was killed by Zimmerman, a Hispanic crime-watch volunteer, has stirred conversations across the country about race, crime and profiling. Investigators believe that case was the catalyst for the beating Saturday in Gainesville. “We do believe that the crime was racially motivated,” Gainesville Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Angelina Valuri said. The assailants were black, while the victim is white, Valuri said. She said the victim had been drinking and could not provide a description of the attackers or their vehicle, only that it was a mid-size vehicle. But Valuri said his injuries were consistent with being jumped by a group. During what he told police was a five-minute beating, he sustained injuries to the left eye, abrasions to his palms and a cut on his right kneecap, and Valuri said he would likely have “permanent disfigurement to the left side of his face.” He was taken to Shands at the University of Florida for treatment. The attack occurred at about 2:45 a.m. in the 3200 block of Southwest 23rd Terrace. The victim told police that a vehicle was coming east on Southwest 32nd Place when it stopped at 23rd Terrace. A group of men got out and told him he was walking too slowly, the victim told police. They then yelled “Trayvon,” according to a GPD report, and proceeded to beat him. Turn the page for the video.

Film captures bands’ 2011 Railroad Revival Tour of the Southwest. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Chris Kim Marcus Mumford Photo: Gus Stewart/ Getty Images Last year, Mumford & Sons , Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show joined forces for the Railroad Revival Tour, a trek that took them through the American Southwest on a journey that was nearly as long as the names of the band names involved. Director Emmett Malloy rode along with them, capturing each show and every magical moment aboard the rails … and now, he’s brought it all together in a brand-new documentary, “Big Easy Express,” which premiered during the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. And at the premiere, MTV News caught up with three of the stars — Mumford’s Ben Lovett, Edward Sharpe’s Alex Ebert and Old Crow’s Gill Landry — to talk about making the film, which, from the sound of things, wasn’t really much work at all. “We weren’t trying to make some ‘great film’ or anything. It didn’t feel like that, we were just enjoying this experience that was laid out, and doing gigs and traveling in a bizarre way between the two,” Landry said. “And the great thing about Emmett, and this documentary, was that it didn’t invade any of that, it didn’t feel forced or staged. So, no, we weren’t scrubbing up on our documentary history beforehand.” “It was like the biggest party you’ve ever been to,” Landry laughed. “It lasted for a week, and you just couldn’t afford to throw another one afterwards.” Though you get the feeling everyone involved would’ve liked to try, because just hearing the three reminisce on the tour, you can tell that it was one they’ll remember for a long time. Not just for the musical moments, but for everything that happened between the shows too. “It was about the joy of music, the joy of camaraderie,” Landry said. “We’re each, individually, quite different bands, we don’t play the same music, we come from different places — England, Los Angeles, Nashville — but we all came together and just played … played our hearts out. It was really amazing.” “It came at quite an interesting time. We’ve all gone on to making records pretty soon after the tour,” Ebert said. “So, I think it’s impossible to deny the influence both of the spirit and the music that we had on that trip … something happened.” And to that end, even though there’s still no theatrical premiere for “Big Easy Express” (a publicist told MTV News it’ll hit theaters nationally later this year), all three bands are beginning to make plans for a sequel … to the tour, at least. “I think twinkling in the back of everyone’s mind is maybe doing something again,” Sharpe said. “We’ve talked about weird ways to top that or have a different experience … a zeppelin or a riverboat … I think a zeppelin’s more realistic.” Related Artists Mumford & Sons

At South by Southwest film festival, ‘Cabin in the Woods’ scribe tells MTV News, ‘It’s a ride.’ By Kara Warner Joss Whedon Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Joss Whedon has a big year ahead of him. In a little more than a month, fans will finally get to see the long-delayed horror movie “The Cabin in the Woods,” followed a few weeks later by the release of one of this summer’s most highly anticipated tent poles, “The Avengers.” When MTV News caught up with Whedon during the South by Southwest film festival press day for “Cabin in the Woods,” we asked him how his superhero film is coming together. “The most satisfying thing about ‘The Avengers’ is that soon I will finish it,” he said with a weary smile. “That’s quite an undertaking — although listening to Alan Silvestri conduct an 80-piece orchestra didn’t suck. It was a really beautiful experience,” he said of watching the Oscar-nominated composer at work. “He did such a great job: You’re listening to live music and watching your movie form in a way that it doesn’t until it has that music. That was exciting.” Another exciting aspect of the filmmaking process was interacting with his A-list actors: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston, to name a few. Whedon said he enjoyed “just having them all.” “When they would be together, the energy that they would give each other, the way they play off each other, the way they protect each other narratively, making sure that whoever they were coming up against had as much juice as they did. It would be easy to imagine that they would be all be like ‘me, me, me,’ and it was always ‘us, us, us,’ and that was really fun,” he explained. “Except sometimes they would just gossip so much and talk. ‘Guys, we’re rolling. We have to make a movie. This isn’t a party; this isn’t the green room.’ ” The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly” mastermind said he hopes audiences feel just as worn out at the end as he was making it. “I want them to feel exhausted and fulfilled,” he shared. “Not unlike ‘Cabin,’ it’s a ride, and we put the screws to them. We really put the characters through it, and we want the audience to be with them every step of the way and come out of it going, ‘That was an extraordinary experience, and now I want to pay to see it again.’ ” Someone who didn’t have to wait to pay to see the finished product is Whedon’s “Cabin” co-writer and director Drew Goddard. “Drew’s seen it: He saw the very first assembly,” Whedon said. “He was one of the first people I came to and said, ‘Where did I go right?’ ” Goddard could only offer a one-word review via third person: “Drew’s been told he’s not allowed to say anything about it,” Goddard said with a smile. “But it’s awesome.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . At South by Southwest film festival, star Jesse Williams says Joss Whedon’s horror flick is ‘both awesome and terrifying at the same time.’ By Kara Warner What’s a horror movie without a few sensational death scenes? One that could be described as less-than-satisfactory by the gung ho gore fans out there. And although there is a lot of secrecy surrounding the action in “The Cabin in the Woods,” it is not spoiling anything to say that there might be a gory death or two. When MTV News caught up with castmembers Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams and Kristen Connolly at the film’s South by Southwest film festival press day, we asked them to describe how the deaths in the Joss Whedon-penned, Drew Goddard-directed film are different from what we’ve seen onscreen before. “I think people get connected to the characters, but somehow I find the murders in this film are more thrilling,” Williams said. “You know the train wreck effect where you want to look away — something that is both awesome and terrifying at the same time? “Like, one time I almost touched a shark in the open ocean. I didn’t realize it was a shark. ‘I’m excited, but I’m going to die.’ So, those kind of things happening at once. Anna knows what I’m talking about.” “Well, lose a hand. I don’t know about die,” Hutchison offered. “It’s a bit dramatic.” “She’s from New Zealand where it’s like playing in the yard for them: ‘Go play with the sharks!’ ” he teased. “I think it’s both those things happening at once where you’re uniquely thrilled, but you’re going to miss that character — but that’s not saying that any of us die or don’t die in the end.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . This ad for Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s new Southwest Patty Melt is mouth-watering. Or maybe that’s just Kate Upton, SI swimsuit cover model and It Girl of the moment. The burger features a charbroiled beef patty, with sliced jalapenos, grilled onions, pepper-Jack cheese and spicy Santa Fe sauce, all on grilled sourdough bread. The ad, which barely falls short of showing Kate Upton nude , features her going to town on that thing at a drive-in theater. This takes the term PDA to a new level.
