Canadian TV Critic: Could ‘Family Guy’ Creator Seth MacFarlane Be The Next Olbermann?

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane laughed his way through an appearance at the Television Critics Association hootenanny, asking why the critics look so “(bad word) depressed” on the first day. So reported Canadian journalist Alex Strachan , who apparently was so impressed by MacFarlane that he asked him if woud like to become “the next Keith Olbermann” and rail against Fox News (as if he hasn’t):  MacFarlane has become a semi-regular guest on Real Time with Bill Maher, and Maher seems to enjoy his company. Might MacFarlane consider a future in social commentary? I asked him. Might he become the next Keith Olbermann, railing against the excesses of Fox News, even as a paid employee — and a highly paid one at that — of the Fox Entertainment division? “I have a great time doing that show,” MacFarlane said, serious for a moment. “Bill is a friend, and he’s one of the most standup guys I’ve met out here. “I don’t have a particular agenda to do that. As opportunities present themselves, if it sounds like fun, then I’ll do it. I’m not angling to expand into the news business. But (Real Time) is a fun show to do.” Strachan noted that MacFarlane earned lots of cash and awards and the “uncaring wrath” of the Parents Television Council. (What? There’s lots of loving care put into the wrath against MacFarlane.) He added that MacFarlane loved how the critics were appalled at his adolescent, flaming-bag-of-poo sense of humor in a forthcoming episode:  True to form, his Christmas episode of American Dad, in which a murderous Santa and his army of bow-wielding reindeer warriors traps the Smith family in a cabin during a Christmas Eve snowstorm, left much of the room appalled. MacFarlane seemed delighted — giddy, even — at the reaction. “A lot of neutral faces out there,” he said. “A lot of straight lines across the mouths.” Murderous Santa is apparently following Armageddon Commando Jesus in the Christmas sweepstakes. Fox Entertainment must be so proud of its big-bucks commitment to this twaddle.

Enrique Iglesias Says He’ll Water-Ski Nude ‘At Some Point’

‘I’m waiting for a very, very, very dark night,’ the Spain-born pop star jokes to MTV News of honoring World Cup bet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Enrique Iglesias Photo: MTV News Ladies everywhere — whether soccer fans or not — should have been celebrating Spain’s win in the 2010 World Cup, since the team’s victory means that Enrique Iglesias will now have to make good on his promise to water-ski naked. The singer vowed that if his native country took the Cup, he’d hit the water in the buff. “I was just extremely passionate about the World Cup, and to watch Spain win was just unbelievable,” Iglesias told MTV News on Monday (July 19), opening up as well about his latest album, Euphoria. “What happened is … I’m from Spain and I was rooting for Spain and they lost their first game against Switzerland, so all my friends would call me up and make fun of me … and that’s where that bet came in.” Cheering on his squad paid off for Iglesias (in a sense), but fans are wondering just when they can expect to see the star au naturel? “I’m waiting for a very, very, very dark night and … yep, a bet’s a bet,” he conceded. “At some point, I will have to do it.” If Enrique does go through with it, he’ll probably need to ensure there aren’t any police around first. But for now, he sounded less concerned with law enforcement than with what might be lurking on the beaches of Miami. “Someone told me about that, technically, it is indecent exposure, so I guess you can get arrested for it,” he said. “There was a bunch of [conditions I required for the bet]: I had to be a little drunk. It had to be late, late at night and the thing about the bet, what’s scary is that Miami’s full of sharks, so you don’t want to fall, middle of the night, naked in the ocean. It’s not fun — especially drunk.” Do you want Enrique keep his promise to water-ski in the buff? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Enrique Iglesias

What Is Al-Shabaab Doing In Uganda?

Moments before twin bomb blasts tore through crowds of football fans. Photo: AFP/Getty Images Darren Foster is a producer for Vanguard. Just a few months ago, I sat down for a final dinner in Uganda with Vanguard correspondent Mariana van Zeller and producer Alex Simmons. We were joined by a couple of other foreign reporters who we had become friendly with while covering the country’s controversial anti-gay legislation. One of them, a French photojournalist who is based in Uganda, suggested the place: Ethiopian Village, a leafy outdoor restaurant that’s as popular for its food as for its giant projection screen. Expats—journalists, missionaries, NGO workers—along with Ugandans regularly gather at Ethiopian Village to watch big sporting events. And that was the scene last night when a large crowd gathered to watch the World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands. The match was entering the final minutes of regular time when a bomb ripped through the packed restaurant. A near simultaneous explosion tore through a rugby field where large screens showing the match had drawn hundreds of spectators. At last count, 74 people were killed, and many more injured. While reporting in Uganda this kind of terrorism was the furthest thing from our mind. Kampala is a safe and peaceful city. But as early as last week, the leader of the Somali Islamist group, Al-Shabaab, threatened to launch an attack on Uganda, whose troops are part of the African Union peacekeeping force in Mogadishu. Also, lost in the bigger headline of New York Times reporter Jeffrey Gettleman’s recent story about child soldiers working for the US-backed government in Somalia was the fact that many of the government forces are trained in Uganda. The Ugandan military dismissed the threat from Al-Shabaab. They may have thought that Uganda was too far outside the scope of international terror. And while many are reporting that this is Al-Shabaab’s first strike outside of Somalia, that’s not entirely accurate. Al Shabab is a franchise of a global network. A network that put itself on the map with another coordinated bombing in East Africa. In 1998, al Qaeda simultaneously bombed the US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania killing hundreds of people. Lawrence Wright reported in his excellent book on al Qaeda, The Looming Tower, that it was Osama bin Laden’s hope that the bombings would draw the US into Afghanistan, where he had recently moved al Qaeda. All bin Laden got were a few cruise missiles. But three years later, after the Sept. 11 attacks, he finally got his wish. Since then, Afghanistan and Iraq have largely defined the war on terror. But as the bombings in Kampala show, with terrorism the battlefield isn’t always so clear or obvious. added by: dmfoster
