Network News Shows Largely Skip President’s $50 Billion Spending Request

The network morning and evening news shows have all but ignored President Obama’s Saturday letter to congressional leaders asking for $50 billion in additional spending to prevent the “massive layoffs of teachers, police, and firefighters.” Only Sunday’s Good Morning America on ABC has covered the President’s request so far. The chief executive’s June 12 letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Minority Leader John Boehner urged “swift action” on the multi-billion dollar proposal to prevent the public sector layoffs and “give our nation’s businesses added impetus to hire and grow.” ABC anchor Bill Weir brought up the President’s letter with White House correspondent Jake Tapper 13 minutes into the 8 am Eastern hour of Sunday’s Good Morning America: WEIR: And then, I guess, slightly more difficult than stopping the leak is keeping open the flow of federal stimulus money- I understand the President [is] asking for another $50 billion? JAKE TAPPER: Another $50 billion, and this has been a tough sell for Democrats on Capitol Hill, not to mention, of course, Republicans. President Obama made the request in a letter yesterday . I will be sitting down today with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and House Minority Leader John Boehner to see if they have any willingness to pass an additional $50 billion. The President says this is needed as emergency aid to state and local governments, to make sure there aren’t massive layoffs of teachers and policemen and firemen. But, so far, Congress has shown no inclination to pass any more spending bills. Neither Sunday’s Today show on NBC nor CBS’s Sunday Morning program mentioned the spending request. This omission continued on all three networks Sunday evening news programs. The networks’ morning shows on Monday also failed to mention the push for further spending by the President. By contrast, CNN’s Christine Romans devoted an entire segment to it on American Morning: JOHN ROBERTS: Twenty minutes now after the [7 am Eastern] hour- Christine Romans here ‘Minding Your Business’ this morning. And we heard mantras of ‘drill baby drill’- now, I guess this one is ‘spend baby spend,’ right? CHRISTINE ROMANS: Right, the President- KIRAN CHETRY: But don’t call it ‘stimulus.’ ROMANS: Don’t call it- whatever you do, do not call new spending in the economy ‘stimulus’ because we have mid-term elections coming up and Republicans and- you know, frankly, a lot of Democrats are not real keen on spending a lot more money. But the President this weekend sending a letter to congressional leadership, saying this is not the time to pull back on some important emergency spending measures because the economy is really at a critical juncture, he says, in the path to recovery. The President, in this three-page letter to Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner, Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, saying basically, we cannot afford to slide backward, that we must take emergency measures. All told, maybe up to $50 billion in new spending for things like keeping teachers on the job, for helping people pay their premiums for health care insurance, for making sure that first responders have money so that they are out there actually being able to answer 911 calls and the like. Here’s the issue that the President points out in his letter. We have an economy that is in a recovery, but that recovery seems to be pretty fragile. You look at the number of people unemployed- it’s still 9.7 percent. You look at the most recent retail sales number- retail sales fell 1.2 percent in the most recent month. That was a surprise to people. And you have you a 30-year fixed rate mortgage of an unbelievable 4.81 percent. Folks, that is so low for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. But you still have a lot of concerns with the housing market. It’s just not going to recover until you see the job situation recover. So the President is asking for some- you know, solidarity behind some new spending. The letter went over like a lead balloon with Republicans- ROBERTS: I’m sure. ROMANS: And even some Democrats are concerned. Look, they can’t support anything in the next few months that’s going to turn up in a campaign ad against them as some kind of a new stimulus or spending money we don’t have. So it’s a tough fight the President has here. CHETRY: All right. Christine Romans, thanks so much. ROMANS: Sure. CHETRY: Oh, what’s your numeral? Sorry about that. ROMANS: Oh, the numeral is 300,000. And this is one of the reasons why the President really makes it personal about this spending- 300,000. CHETRY: This is how many people sign up for unemployment benefits each month? ROMANS: This is- according to David Axelrod, if you don’t spend more money, you’re going to have 300,000 teachers out of work- 300,000. That means if you don’t find the money to spend- ROBERTS: That’s true, yeah. ROMANS: You’re going to notice this in your school, in your classroom. This is something- ROBERTS: State and local budgets. ROMANS: It affects you, and the President noted that in his letter, that state and local people are really in big trouble here. ROBERTS: Okay. And now it’s time to say goodbye to all our company. ROMANS: Or walk. CHETRY: All right, Christine.

Well Nancy, We found out what’s "In It."

Just before the House passed the health care reform bill, Speaker Nancy Pelosi infamously remarked “We have to pass the bill so you can find out what's in it.” It has been nearly six weeks now and we are finding out that what is in it is not necessarily good for health care, says Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Penn.). We are finding that medical costs will rise nationwide: * According to a report from the federal agency that administers Medicare and Medicaid, national health expenditures will increase by $311 billion over 10 years because of the new law. * This same report indicated that individuals who purchase health insurance on their own can expect to pay an additional $2,100 a year (the individual market was already pricing out many consumers, but now costs will rise even faster). * Premiums are not the only area where expenses are projected to rise; because of new taxes and fees on prescription drugs and medical devices, the agency report states that costs would be “passed through to health consumers.” We are finding that it will affect Medicare Advantage programs detrimentally: * Medicare Advantage programs were established to introduce market reforms to the Medicare program. * The flexibility of the Medicare Advantage programs have made them popular with seniors, especially lower income beneficiaries; nearly 30,000 seniors in Pennsylvania's 16th Congressional District elect one of these plans. * Because of deep cuts in the program, Republicans estimate that one in four seniors could see their Medicare Advantage plan cancelled; these estimates were wrong — now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimate that half of seniors will lose the coverage that they currently have. Seniors on Medicare Advantage are not the only ones who could see changes to Medicare. The law cuts $575 billion out of Medicare over the next 10 years. It is difficult to clearly identify how this will change the program, but many doctors warn that they may not be able to continue seeing Medicare patients if the cuts are too severe. Already, Medicare reimbursement rates are far below those paid by private insurers, says Pitts. Source: Joe Pitts, “We found out what's in it,” Daily Caller, May 10, 2010. added by: 2hellnwait

Kenna’s ‘Summit On The Summit’ Continues Fight For Clean Water

‘If we don’t take care of it across the world, we’ll certainly be facing the issue here at home,’ he says of lack of clean drinking water. By James Montgomery Kenna at the State Department Photo: U.S. State Department The stated goal of Kenna’s “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro” was to raise awareness about the global clean-water crisis — more than 1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water and water-related diseases claim the lives of nearly 4 million people each year — because, as he put it, “What’s more noticeable than climbing a mountain?” In January, along with a team of 300 that included fellow musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch (not to mention scientists, United Nations ambassadors, a film crew and experienced guides), Kenna began his climb up Mount Kilimanjaro , battling freezing rain, gashing rocks and dizzying atmospheric conditions on his way to the peak, some 19,000 feet above sea level . Their trek was documented in “Summit” — which premiered Sunday on MTV — and followed by fans online and, accordingly, awareness was raised. But now that he’s back down from the mountain, Kenna says the real struggle has just begun. Because with no mountain left to climb, Kenna and company are tasked with keeping that awareness alive and, in the process, trying to keep the U.S. government from slashing funding for support of clean-water initiatives. It was actually a battle he began fighting before the ascent up Kilimanjaro even began. “In November, I went to the State Department and Congress, spent time with [Congresswoman] Nita Lowey. I went there to ask them if I was to climb a mountain to raise awareness, would it help raise awareness in Washington to get appropriations?” Kenna told MTV News. “The response was, ‘Well, good luck, because it would certainly be helpful.’ ” So he climbed. And then he went back to Washington, along with a team that included United Nations Foundation ambassador Elizabeth Gore, with the express purpose of securing appropriations for fighting water-borne diseases. “We went down and did a photo exhibition at the State Department to show just how serious this issue is. We sat down with Congressman [Earl] Blumenaur in [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi’s conference room,” Kenna said. “He was one of the first to write [Senator] Paul Simon’s ‘Water for the World.’ We went there to ask hard questions, like, ‘Are we spending too much money on things that are interconnected with the water issue?’ Because water is the issue. “We spend billions of dollars on the prevention of HIV and AIDS, but only hundreds of millions on [preventing] water-borne diseases on other things? And the two issues are related,” he continued. “A woman or a child will walk six miles to get some water, outside of any kind of secure area, and what if one of those women and children gets raped and gets HIV? They will then be taking antiviral medications with compromised water. Or, more commonly, if a child is chasing water, he or she never went to school, never learned about HIV. That same kid will have to take antivirals with compromised water. Basically, how are the anitvirals going to benefit somebody when they’re going to die from water with water-borne diseases?” And while the goal was to secure necessary appropriations, Kenna and his team also prevented the government from cutting the level of funding from $300 million down to $200 million. For now, they’ll take that small victory, but the goal — according to Gore — is much, much higher. “We lose a child every 15 seconds to lack of water, so when we went to Washington, we asked Congress for $500 million in appropriations, because we believe we can end this crisis,” she said. “That took guts and teamwork to do and I could never have done it on my own — none of us could, which is why we went together, because if we could climb a mountain, we could certainly do anything.” Kenna said that the end results of his team’s visit to Washington will be seen on March 22 — World Water Day. He hopes that the State Department will consider what he and the team had to say and that appropriations will be secured. He’s optimistic, but at the same time cautions, “I’ll leave it to them to communicate.” And in the meantime, the fight to secure clean water continues. Both Kenna and Gore are championing a text-to-donate system — just texting the world “send” to 90999 will give $10 to the U.N. Foundation, which translates into 1,000 liters of water, enough to benefit a child for an entire year. And he hopes that long after the memories of his trip up Kilimanjaro fade, people will still remember the message behind that climb. Because at the end of the day, the clean-water crisis affects all of us, even if we don’t realize it just yet. “We as a human race tend to be short-sighted. We pay attention to things right in front of us and, frankly, we miss the plot. We mean well, but we miss the plot. For me, it’s less of an interesting thing to text and donate, than it is for people to educate themselves about the issue,” Kenna said. “It already affects a billion people. And if you turn on the news, you hear about states like California and Virginia not having enough water already. So it’s coming here. And if we don’t take care of it across the world, we’ll certainly be facing the issue here at home.” Find out what you can do to help solve the global water crisis now at the “Summit on the Summit” Web site. ‘Jersey Shore’ Cast Go Jaywalking With Jay Leno

Perhaps not surprisingly, The Situation, Snooki and friends did not know many of the answers to Jay’s questions. By Gil Kaufman The cast of “Jersey Shore” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Wednesday Photo: NBC Jay Leno continued his streak of major celebrity bookings on his re-booted “Tonight Show” Wednesday night when the cast of “Jersey Shore” swung by to play a round of “Battle of the Celebrity All Stars: Jersey Shore Edition.” It was the second go-round for the kids — they visited Leno’s ill-fated prime-time show in December for a similar bit. This time, it was the guys versus the girls, as Sammi Sweetheart, J-Woww and Snooki took on Ronnie, Pauly D and The Situation. Asked why she has two w ‘s in her nickname, J-Woww leaned forward to emphasize the bursting-at-the-seams top of her skintight silver dress and smiled, “double the pleasure!” Despite the recent high-profile death of author J.D. Salinger, when asked what the last word in the title of his legendary first novel is, Snooki answered, “The Catcher in the … Closet.” Ronnie slapped his forehead and correctly answered “Rye.” The men were on a roll, as Pauly correctly guessed the final bit of the quote “we have nothing to fear but … fear itself.” And he was, hopefully, kidding when he said it was his mom who coined that infamous phrase. Snooki corrected him and said “Uncle Sam,” only to be saved by J-Woww, who correctly guessed President Franklin D. Roosevelt after a hint from Jay. J-Woww, however, did not know who Federal Reserve boss Ben Bernanke is, incorrectly guessing that the photo Leno showed her was of the president of Iraq. The Situation knew it was “the guy from the banking industry” whose name begins with a “b,” eventually nailing the answer. Explaining that he doesn’t own any stocks, Ronnie had no idea which two animals symbolize the stock market. Snooki gamely guessed the donkey and the elephant, while J-Woww went with tiger and leopard and Sammi guessed lion. “Ohh! I got one right,” she cooed. “No, you just named an animal,” Leno corrected her, revealing the bull and bear as the correct answers. When The Situation complained that the questions were way harder the second time around, Leno shot back, “You’re making more money now!” Mike had a game guess for who becomes president if both the vice president and president die — he said secretary of state, which is wrong — but Ronnie was way off when he guessed “the guy that lost … that came in second place, the runner-up.” But sadly, that wasn’t anywhere close to the correct answer, yet still way ahead of Sammi’s shot, “the wife of somebody.” Ronnie tossed a brick on his second shot after getting the hint that it’s a woman. “Sarah Palin,” he said. “Not so much,” Leno lamented, naming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. It wasn’t all bad, though, as Snooki correctly named Ireland as the place where St. Patrick’s Day celebrations started, even if Sammi complained that because she’s Italian she didn’t need to know what St. Patrick drove out of Ireland. Ronnie figured it was some kind of car, Sammi guessed leprechauns, and Snooki went with donkeys again, before Sammi finally got to snakes, but only after she named bears and lions. Things got ugly when Jay asked the cast to name the 49th and 50th states in the union, with Ronnie going with Hawaii and Puerto Rico, J-Woww guessing Mexico, and Sammi saving them with Alaska. You can’t totally blame her, but J-Woww mistook a picture of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il for Chinese action star Jackie Chan. Mike knew it was something “Il” from one of the Koreas, which was close enough for a point. Pauly thought a picture of Barbara Walters was actually Joan Rivers, but the girls knew it was Walters with Katie Couric. Even the gimmes were tough, as nearly all shouted out “Messiah!” when asked who wrote Handel’s “Messiah.” “Don’t ever go to Vegas,” Leno warned them. Ronnie got a lay-up when he correctly guessed John McCain on another photo quiz, but it helped that the background of the picture had the former Republican presidential candidate’s name written on it. “I can read,” Ronnie said. Pauly thought a Homo sapien bar is a gay bar, but even that blown answer wasn’t enough to block the men from winning the contest 7-6 over the ladies.

Government health insurance option appears doomed

Senior House Democrats have largely abandoned hopes of including a government-run insurance option in the final compromise health care bill taking shape, according to several officials, and are pushing for other measures to rein in private insurers. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other senior Democrats told President Barack Obama in recent meetings they want the legislation to strip the insurance industry of a long-standing exemption from federal antitrust laws, officials said. That provision is in the House-passed measure, but was omitted from the bill that the Senate passed on Christmas Eve.
