One Direction Hit ‘MIB 3’ Premiere Armed With Toy Guns

‘I just think it’s fun and the action’s great,’ Louis Tomlinson tells MTV News on the red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Wigler and Fallon Prinzivalli One Direction Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Armed with Nerf guns, the five guys of One Direction hit up the “Men in Black 3” premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre, ready to face any kind of challenges. The fivesome, who kicked off their headlining U.S. tour on Tuesday night, took a break from the road to catch the film. They also chatted with MTV News on the red carpet about why they felt they needed a line of defense for the fete. “We’re safe [with them and we’ll use them on] anyone who gets brave,” Louis Tomlinson joked about their Nerf guns. But the fellas did have a real reason for wanting to catch the film: They are big fans of the “Men in Black” franchise and have been for quite some time. “[They are] great films, aren’t they?” Tomlinson added. “I just think it’s fun and the action’s great. We were young when the first came out, so we kind of grew up with them.” Once inside the theater, instead of having to fend off anyone who might have gotten in their way, they gave the guns away to a few young fans who ran up to them. While security did their best to keep fans away from the boy banders, one young girl managed to get to the floppy-haired Harry Styles. All five guys agreed to give the girl their autograph. Before the film started, they hung out in their seats, munching on popcorn while adoring fans and their moms checked the guys out. Later on, at the after-party held on the USS Intrepid, fans followed the band as they made their way around the bash, including down several flights of stairs to the bathrooms. They didn’t stop for anyone, but they smiled and waved occasionally. The guys won’t have too much time to hit up more movie premieres since they are back to playing Thursday night (May 24) in Virginia. One Direction will continue on their summer tour through July. Britney Spears Ignites Crowd In ‘X Factor’ Audio Leak

Spears goes head to head with Demi Lovato after a young male contestant performs in the first auditions. By Emily Blake Britney Spears arrives for the first round of ‘X Factor’ auditions in Austin, Texas Photo: Splash News When “The X Factor” producers announced that they was adding Britney Spears to the judges’ panel, experts and viewers wondered whether she would have what it takes to sit alongside Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid to dole out advice to bright-eyed singers. But from the sounds of audio leaked to TMZ from the first round of auditions, it seems that the audience thinks Spears will do just fine. In the audio clip, from a young man’s audition in Austin, Texas, Spears and fellow newbie Demi Lovato give out differing critiques. “I think that you have a great voice and your tone was great,” 19-year-old Lovato told the contestant. “But, I don’t really know where you fit. I don’t know what’s going to set you apart from other musicians who are boys. So, I think you just have to find out what makes you special and what separates you from all the other teenage boys in this industry.” Britney, on the other hand, had a some kinder words for the amateur singer. “I think you can be bigger than the next Justin Bieber,” Spears said, eliciting a rambunctious response from the crowd. “I feel like your runs are amazing,” she added. “And I do feel like with a little more training, you could actually [inaudible] better presentation, but I see what’s there. And you’re very gifted. Thank you.” Do you think that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have what it takes to be a judge on “The X Factor”? Leave your comment below! Britney Spears Calls ‘X Factor’ A ‘Beautiful Concept’

Spears says she wants to ‘inspire’ contestants on the Fox show. By Jocelyn Vena “X Factor” judges L.A. Reid, Demi Lovato, Simon Cowell and Britney Spears at the FOX Upfront Photo: Desiree Navarro/ Getty Images Britney Spears seems poised and ready to sit beside her fellow “X Factor” judges on the revamped second season of the show . At the Fox upfront this week, the singer appeared alongside fellow newbie Demi Lovato , as well as returning judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, and gushed about the Fox reality show. “Just really being able to be there and inspire the other contestants … they’re so young and they’re trying to fulfill their dreams,” she said at the event. “It’s just a whole beautiful concept. It’s just really cool.” While her negotiations with the show had been making headlines in the weeks leading up to the official announcement, Cowell brushed off all the hoopla, which includes a rumored $15 million payday for joining the show. “A force of nature, I was somewhere in the middle, but I’m thrilled. I love these guys,” he said of getting everyone, including Spears, on board. “I charmed her.” Spears seemed equally taken with the prickly Brit. “He’s adorable. He’s completely adorable. He didn’t have to try hard,” she admitted. Spears’ addition to the show is hardly the only casting making news: Lovato also opened up about having the “X Factor.” While little is known about the final hours going into locking Lovato in for the show, she’s rumored to be taking in $1 million, according to Gossip Cop . Lovato was on a short list of possible contenders to appear on the show that also reportedly included Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne. “I’m so excited to be here,” she said. “I guess you called,” she added with Simon by her side. “And that’s how it got set up, just a phone call.” In addition to getting warm and fuzzy about each other in the interview, Cowell shared that the judges will be filming in the next couple weeks when they hit up Austin, Texas, to begin scoping out talent. And if you think the claws might come out then, Reid assured viewers that that won’t be the case. “Oh no, we’re gonna be really sweet to each other,” he said. “Nothing controversial. It’ll be perfect.” Related Artists Britney Spears

Britney Spears Drops Some X-Factor Cleavage

I guess now that Britney Spears is officially going to be a judge on the The X-Factor , I don’t really know what qualifies her to judge others but what do I know, we’re going to be seeing a whole lot more of her. I guess I’m alright with that, she seems to have gotten herself together and is looking pretty good. Here she is giving us a look at some quality cleavage in her tight little dress. I bet an on-air breakdown would do wonders for the ratings.

Will Demi Lovato Help Britney Spears On ‘X Factor’?

‘I believe Demi’s bubbly personality and kindness will prove to bring Britney out of her shell,’ says Celebuzz editor Amber James. By Gil Kaufman Britney Spears, LA Reid, Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato Photo: Britney Spears via Facebook It’s always hard being the new girl in school. But when Britney Spears makes her debut in the fall as the fresh judge on the panel of “X Factor” , she’ll have come fine company in the form of Demi Lovato . With show creator Simon Cowell and record label boss L.A. Reid returning as the wily veterans with decades of experience in the game, Demi and Britney will be the relative newbies in the mix. The two women will also have something else in common: Both were child stars who grew up in the public eye and then struggled through a series of headline-grabbing difficulties only to brush themselves off and regain their star status. “I think it’s good for both of them to have each other on the show,” People magazine senior writer Joey Bartolomeo said. “For one thing, because they’re both new to [‘Factor’] and it’s not one person coming in to be with three other judges. They have each other.” Their paths, and struggles, have been very different, but Bartolomeo said the two can likely relate to each other on a personal level, though we shouldn’t expect them to do any therapeutic work on live TV. “Everyone loves a good comeback story,” she said. “Britney has been doing well the past couple of years … but seeing her on a weekly basis with this kind of job is another step in that process … People want to root for people to have success; now they have two people on a show who’ve been through a lot, and people will tune in to see how they are.” Lovato, 19, went from being the young star of such Disney shows as “Sonny With a Chance” and “Camp Rock” to a successful touring and recording career that was derailed in 2010 when she entered a rehab center for physical and emotional issues. She has since become a spokesperson for anti-bullying causes, spoken out about her body-image issues, eating disorder, depression, self-abuse and substance problems. Spears, 30, also came up in the Disney machine as a star on “The New Mickey Mouse Club,” and after a series of erratic incidents and public meltdowns, she ended up in a rehabilitation facility in 2007 and was put on a psychiatric hold in January 2008 after refusing to give up her two children to their father, ex-husband Kevin Federline. While Lovato has spoken publicly about her struggles and appears to have gotten her career back on track, Spears has been kept on lockdown by her team. The singer is under a strict conservatorship that has handed control of her assets to her father and, recently, her boyfriend/agent, Jason Trawick. Britney’s career has rebounded, with hit albums, singles and tours, but she has participated in only sporadic press interviews, which were, by most accounts, tightly controlled and allowed for little deviation from a predetermined script. “I think they could help support each other, but their [personal] problems are very different,” said Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew, who questioned the choice of Spears for the “Factor” panel. “Knowing the way Britney works, nobody is going to be able to speak to her. It’s a very odd choice. … I don’t know what Demi will add [either].” Drew said he understood “X Factor” had to add two new judges because of the structure of the show, but he wonders how the pair will fit into the mix. “Demi is very honest and says what’s on her mind, so maybe they need someone like that,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone will tune in to see Demi.” Celebuzz editor Amber James also acknowledged that the women have dealt with their problems in totally different ways, but said their shared struggle might add an interesting dynamic to the show as it tries to build on the first season’s solid-but-not-smashing success. “I believe Demi’s bubbly personality and kindness will prove to bring Britney out of her shell,” predicted James. “They seem like they’d bounce off each other well and provide a nurturing and safe atmosphere, where Britney can really get into her role, without fear of saying the wrong thing and truly be herself.” And even if they don’t become instant besties, the pair will at least be able to fend off the intimidating presences of Cowell and Reid while trying to find their feet on the show. “Maybe the two of them will gang up on Simon and L.A.,” Bartolomeo said. Is ‘X Factor’ The Right Move For Britney Spears?

Experts weigh in on whether Spears will find success with her new judging gig. By Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears Photo: Max Morse/Getty Images The rumors had been swirling for months, and now, according to reports, the pop princess herself, Britney Spears , will be joining the judging panel on “The X Factor,” landing a $15 million deal for one season. Yet, after 15 years in the public eye, seven studio albums and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, many are wondering: Is “The X Factor” is the right career move for Spears ? “I think it is a good move, actually,” Entertainment Weekly writer Tanner Stransky told MTV News. “I think she has so many people on her team watching what she’s doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it’s the right move right now.” This new role certainly has many advantages. It keeps Spears in the public eye while keeping her close to her family, and it will most likely bring in the big ratings that “X Factor” and Simon Cowell are hoping for. Yet there are some experts who are a little wary of Spears taking a spot on the panel, since over the years, the pop star has been noticeably withdrawn from press, rarely giving on-camera interviews. “I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she’s been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled,” Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard, said. “And there can be uncontrollable moments on ‘The X Factor,’ and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome.” Stransky agreed and believes that, while Spears is judging the contestants, viewers will ultimately be judging her. “Everyone is going to take a close look at her and pay attention to what she says,” Stransky said. “She’s sort of been so managed on her interviews in the past five years, it’s risky.” But Spears’ loyal fan base feels that putting Spears in an environment where anything can happen is actually a good thing, and will show a whole different side of the pop star. “That’s part of the excitement of her being on this: It’s unscripted,” said Jordan Miller, webmaster for Spears’ biggest fan site, BreatheHeavy.com . “We are so used to her reading cue cards and kind of being controlled in that way, so for her to break out of that and to do something that’s stepping outside her comfort zone, I think it’s a great step for her, career-wise, and for her as a person. I think she’s going to do really good. I think she’s confident.” And confidence is key when judging a singing competition, but so is experience — which Spears has in spades. For years, fans have listened to her chart-topping music and have seen her on tour, but now they’re ready to connect with the star on a new level. “I think the overall consensus is that people are really excited to see Britney do something new and be able to connect with her a couple times a week on national television,” Miller said. “It’s exciting for fans to see that she’s going to be able to mentor these contestants, because like it or not, Britney does have the ‘X Factor,’ so it’s going to be great to see how she can transcend this into more singers and inspire other people.” Are you excited for Britney Spears to be a judge on “The X Factor”? ‘The Avengers’: The Reviews Are In!

Reviews are glowing for director Joss Whedon’s star-studded superhero epic. By Josh Wigler Scarlett Johansson in “The Avengers” Photo: Marvel Impossibly high expectations, assemble! The moment that Marvel fans far and wide have been waiting years for has arrived at last: “The Avengers,” directed by Joss Whedon and featuring a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, has finally landed in theaters nationwide. Anyone worried that Marvel couldn’t live up to its own hype with “Avengers” need only look at the reviews to see that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have indeed performed to the best of their ability. Not only is “Avengers” an international box-office success and a soon-to-be domestic hit, the film is also adored by critics, geeks and moviegoers of all other assorted shapes and sizes. Keep reading for a selection of the glowing “Avengers” reviews! The Man Behind The Curtain “As screenwriter, sharer of story credit with Zak Penn and director, Whedon is the key reason why this $220-million behemoth of a movie is smartly thought out and executed with verve and precision. It may be overly long at two hours, 23 minutes, but so much is going on you might not even notice. Whedon’s biggest success, creating TV’s ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ was nowhere near this scale. But he is a third-generation television writer who was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing ‘Toy Story,’ and he’s got an innate gift for bringing stories like this to life with the energy and intelligence that should be popular entertainment’s birthright but rarely is.” — Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times Earth’s Mightiest Heroes “Downey’s Tony Stark remains driven by ego and genius, always on the verge of overreaching, while Hemsworth continues to navigate between two worlds. As a man out of time, unsure of how he fits into the modern world, or if he even wants to, Evans shoulders even more of the drama, becoming the heart of a film that’s filled with heroics, but also, if sometimes too fleetingly, concerned with the meaning of heroism. Fitting right in: Ruffalo’s laidback Banner, a characterization with echoes of the easy-living California dude he played in ‘The Kids Are All Right,’ Johansson’s haunted superspy, and Renner, whose steely intensity alone makes it easy to forget the unlikelihood of an archer, no matter how good, being able to hold his own among superhumans.” — Keith Phipps, The A.V. Club The Laugh Factor ” ‘The Avengers’ may be one of the funniest movies of the year. Whereas ‘Iron Man 2’ was overdose, having other leads to dilute Downey Jr.’s manic mouth helps Tony Stark finally land his punchlines. Evans is another standout, his fish-out-of-water predicament lending itself to comedy that clicks (‘I got that reference,’ Captain Steve Rogers timidly points out). But Hulk takes the cake, Whedon mining the towering green monster for all-out destruction and physical comedy. When Hulk smashes, he smashes big and Whedon’s clever timing is reminiscent of old Warner Bros. cartoons.” — Matt Patches, Hollywood.com The Big Fight “Much of this battle takes place in midtown Manhattan, where the neatest sequences involve Loki’s ginormous slithering, undulating snake-lizard-dragon machine, which seems almost to have a mind of its own and is backed up by countless snakelings. At one point, an Avenger flies into the mouth of this leviathan and penetrates its entire length, emerging at the business end. You won’t see that in ‘The Human Centipede.’ ” — Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun-Times The Final Word “It’s essentially six movies in one, which might account for the nearly 2 1/2 hour length. While it’s slow getting started, ‘The Avengers’ is a splashy superhero mash-up that should please breathless fanboys. It also has a broader appeal for mass audiences with its fast-paced comic banter and exhilarating action sequences under the capable helm of director/co-writer/unabashed fan Joss Whedon. Whedon weaves a story that allows each of the heroes to do what they do best. And while they may not have exactly equal time, audiences get enough of each to feel satisfied, but not sated. Clever work, indeed.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today Are you seeing “The Avengers” this weekend? Let us know in the comments section below or on Twitter ! Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson And The Art Of The Second Act

Above the Buzz examines how these former pop princesses serve as examples of how stars can re-brand themselves again and again. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Both Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson dominated headlines this week. Not since the late ’90s have these two duked it out for so much media coverage. However there’s a remarkable difference in what’s happening today to what was happening then: Then, everyone was talking about their music and their pop star personas. Where Britney was a Lolita who proclaimed virginity while dancing provocatively in belly-baring tops, Jessica was innocent and sweet and didn’t dare anger her minister daddy. Jessica released songs that put her big voice on display, and Brit focused on songs that put eyes on her dazzling dance moves and her ear for dance beats. A lot has changes in the years since then. What’s interesting is that, despite their seemingly different personalities, in retrospect, they have a lot more in common than was initially apparent: They are both down-home country girls who have built empires that few can touch. Both have had very public career highs met with very public personal lows. Both have loved boy banders. Both have even documented their lives on reality shows, albeit with very different outcomes. With almost 15 years separating the women they are now from those girls they were then, it seems they are looking to change it up. At a time where the pop world is filled with plenty of younger pop princesses looking for their time to shine, Britney and Jessica seem comfortable enough with their own musical legacies to let them all have their moments. And, they should be at ease. They have both been incredibly successful in that world, having sold millions of albums, had huge radio singles and made music that is uniquely their own. And while Simpson has let her music take a back seat to other projects in the past few years, Spears is still a working singer who sells out tours and tops the charts. These days, Jessica seems focused on maintaining the post-pop star second act she launched several years back. She’s a fashion mogul with a billion-dollar empire that has outfitted fashionistas with reasonably priced essentials like platforms and bags. She also judges up-and-coming fashion talent on NBC’s “Fashion Star,” sharing with new designers her own wisdom on breaking into the industry. But, always savvy enough to keep people guessing, she’s expanded her brand even further. Now, she is also the latest mommy mogul . Jessica just added another gig to her post-pop star career — that of the A-list mom. Just this week, she welcomed her first child, Maxwell Drew , into the world. We expect she’ll use that experience to re-launch herself yet again. We should expect fashion lines for stylish toddlers. And who wouldn’t want to see a reality show that follows the new mom and her family? It seems that, like Simpson, Spears might be looking to take a break from music for a moment. Having already given birth to two sons and tried her hand at the worlds of fashion and beauty, Spears is now a frontrunner to judge “X Factor.” Her own experiences in the industry certainly make her the perfect candidate to give advice on the ups and downs of pop superstardom. She’s experienced both with the entire world watching. While Spears’ other projects (clothing line, fragrances) have generally been overshadowed by her music career, this rumored gig might be the first one to take the attention away from her pop fame while using it for all it’s worth. Spears is probably up for the gig because she is basically the heir to the Madonna legacy . She truly understands how to be a pop star. And the rumors that she might join Simon Cowell on the show seem to be intriguing Spears’ critics and non-devotees more than anything she’s done in the past few years. Spears might have found her perfect next chapter. Right now, it’s unclear how these new career paths will shape the future for Simpson and Spears — musically and otherwise. But, as has always been the case for them, no one doubts they will redefine what it means to be a female pop star. They are women who aren’t willing to go quietly into the night. For Spears and Simpson, it seems they want it all or nothing. And, who can blame them? What would you like to see Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson do next? Share your thoughts below! Jonas Brothers Part Ways With Longtime Label Hollywood Records

‘We’re all looking forward to this next chapter,’ Nick Jonas says of the shakeup. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers Photo: El Universal The Jonas Brothers have been tweeting with the hashtag #JB2012 lately. And it seems that it now has a whole new meaning as the brothers enter the next chapter of their careers. Nick, Joe and Kevin have confirmed they are leaving Hollywood Records, the Disney-owned label they’ve been with since 2007. In addition to parting ways with Hollywood, the band of brothers has confirmed that they also bought the rights to their master recordings, merchandising and publishing. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter , Nick opened up about the decision to push forward with their music career without the assistance of the label backing them. “This was a decision that we made as a group,” he said. “Naturally, as with any partnership, when you do part ways, there is emotion tied to it. We’ve been blessed to have a lot of success with Hollywood and with Disney, but speaking on behalf of my brothers and our team, we’re all looking forward to this next chapter. We’re ready for that next step as a group, and being able to take our work with us was so important.” As of now, the band is label-less, their manager Johnny Wright confirmed. He added that the guys, who are currently working on their next album, will seek a different type of deal if or when they sign with another company. Their next deal, he added, will give them more control. “This will allow them to chart their own destiny,” he said, adding that given their relationship with Disney had pretty much come to the end of the road, this decision came at the perfect time. “The industry and distribution channels are changing so rapidly, we don’t even know what it means anymore to put out a record,” he explained. “If we wanted to take another deal with a major, it would be different than what we entered into when we signed with Hollywood. We don’t have to become just an artist to the label, we could be a partner or do it ourselves and then come back later on. There’s no plan here — the plan is whatever we decide to make it.” The guys are now focused on the future, which as a group includes their next album . Individually, Nick will wrap up his run in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” on Broadway this July , and Kevin, with his wife Danielle, will premiere their E! reality show this August . Joe is coming off of a solo album he dropped last year. “In these past three years, my brothers and I have not released a record, but we’ve really come into our own as men,” Nick explained. “And we’ve also lived life, which is an important part to making a record. … I’ve got a studio set-up in my apartment in New York where we can all put down our ideas. It’s a really liberating feeling to just be able to create and write whatever is on our hearts.” The newly free agents’ next album, the follow-up to 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times, should drop by the end of 2012 or early 2013 .
