‘I think she has a distinct sound when she raps,’ Spears says of Femme Fatale Tour opening act. By Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears Photo: MTV News When the news that Britney Spears was taking MC Nicki Minaj on the road with her hit, fans — and Brit herself — couldn’t have been more excited. The Femme Fatale Tour is now in full swing, with both women bringing their A-game to each performance. And along the way, it seems as if these two have sparked a friendship. “I think she’s great,” Spears told MTV News of Minaj. “She’s a great artist in every way and I’m really happy for her.” Minaj, who is nominated for three Video Music Awards , brings her own flair to the girl-power tour, adding her eccentric style, her fiery wigs and, of course, her signature beats. “I think she has a distinct sound when she raps,” Spears said. “It really stands out and sets her apart from everyone else. I’m happy she’s able to be on tour with me because that’s just amazing.” Last month, we caught up with Minaj just before she hit the road with the pop veteran, and she was ready to take that distinct sound to a whole new fanbase. “I’m just trying to put more theater on that stage. So much to me is music, but it’s also about putting on a show, so that’s my goal: to truly put on a show and incorporate theater and dance,” Minaj said. And if you’re lucky, you might just catch Spears and Minaj team up for a special performance of the remix for “Till the World Ends.” “At the end of the show, the last song she comes on every once in awhile,” Spears said of Minaj joining her onstage. “Not every show, but it’s usually special when she does it.” Will you see Britney and Nicki on tour this summer? Spears received nominations for Best Choreography and Best Pop Video. By Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Britney Spears is no stranger to the Video Music Awards . She has so far been nominated 28 times, won four awards and has given us some of the most iconic VMA performances of all time. Who could forget her VMA strip-down in 2000 for “Oops! … I Did It Again,” her dance with a snake for “I’m a Slave 4 U” and, of course, her infamous “Like a Virgin” kiss with Madonna? This year, Spears looks to add to her list of VMA accomplishments with two nominations , one for Best Pop Video and one for Best Choreography for her hit Ke$ha-penned song “Till the World Ends.” MTV News recently caught up with Spears and broke the news of the nominations to the pop star. “Oh my goodness, I’m completely flattered,” Spears said. “That is amazing! Thank you so much for telling me. That’s awesome!” Spears will tackle some pretty stiff competition in both categories including seven-time nominee Adele (“Rolling in the Deep”) and four-time nominee Bruno Mars (“Grenade”) . But Spears isn’t concentrating on her competition, she’s just happy to be recognized. “I grew up listening to MTV. It’s just such an iconic thing to be able to participate in,” Spears said about the VMAs. “To even be presented an award is just so flattering and I’m honored. I’m excited.” Spears should be excited after such a big year. She released her seventh studio album, Femme Fatale , which reached #1 on the Billboard chart, she’s currently on the road for her summer tour , and now she has two more nominations to add to her already lengthy list of awards. So does Spears ever get used to all the VMA nominations? “Oh no, you never get used to that!” she said. Who did Momma Timberlake catch Justin knockin’ boots with?!?! Whom did Justin Timberlake’s mom catch him in bed with when he was “too young,” as he revealed in a recent interview? Could it have been former girlfriends Britney Spears or Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas? Speculation has spread like wildfire since the “Friends With Benefits” star told Elle, “I was caught . . . My mom wasn’t cool about it. I was too young to be in bed with a girl.” Timberlake dated Spears when they were 18, but they met on the set of “The Mickey Mouse Club” when they were just 12. Fergie dated Timberlake prior to his relationship with Spears, when he was 16 and she was 23. His rep declined to comment. So wait, not only were you smashin’ a broad at too young a age, but you were doin’ it at your MOM’S house?!? Justin, Justin, Justin… At least you didn’t have to wait until you were rich and famous to start choppin’ down backs like some of these fools in Hollyweird!! At what age could you find your son/daughter having sex and “be cool” about it?? Source
Chris Marrs Piliero explains the video’s ‘Half Baked’ and ‘Terminator’ homages, but what about those elusive seashells? By Kara Warner Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” music video Photo: Jive Britney Spears’ video for “I Wanna Go” — a dream-sequence-y, pop-culture-reference-packed tongue-in-cheek attack on the paparazzi — is so fun, it’s quickly becoming one of our favorites. And because we can’t get enough of it, MTV News sought out the vid’s creative mastermind, director Chris Marrs Piliero (who also directed Ke$ha’s “Blow”), to explain it to us, frame by frame. “This opening scene poked fun at the ridiculous rumors that surround Britney,” Piliero said of the clip’s opening press conference, during which Britney tells off a room of reporters. “That is our homage to ‘Half Baked.’ I was really stoked that we were able to include that little parody homage in the video and that Guillermo Diaz, who is the guy [in the scene] giving the thumbs up, is from the movie.” After strutting out of the press conference and squeezing the butt of an autograph-seeking fan (played by one of her dancers), Spears strolls down the street, passing by a baby in a stroller who whistles at her. “We were actually going to have three babies,” Piliero revealed. “But the other two were just crying and crying. and I was like ‘F— it, get ’em outta there,’ and the one baby, he ruled and was super cute, so we went with him.” Spears’ next saucy move is to flash a bunch of guys on the street: a young boy, his dad, a male driver getting a ticket and the cop writing it. “That little kid was awesome,” Piliero said of the young redheaded boy. “If you look closely, he’s actually squeezing his juice box all over this shirt. The cop is another one of Britney’s dancers. You might recognize him from the ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, he had blue hair.” Next up, Spears encounters a paparazzo on the street and grabs his camera and throws it to the ground. “That was a very genuine performance from Britney,” Piliero said of the scene. “I felt like she was letting out her inner emotion toward paparazzi. It was also really cold. I think she just went for it.” Cut to Spears on top of a taxi, microphone in hand with a long cord, which she uses to take out the various photographers who have surrounded her. “A lot of people think this was inspired by ‘Kill Bill,’ because I’m a huge Quentin Tarantino fan. I would totally own up to that if it was true,” he admitted. “But I actually intended for her to always having her performance with the microphone [throughout the video] for her performance setup, so I thought that was a good way to tie it all together and I didn’t want to give her a real weapon.” But Piliero was making an intentional pop-culture reference with the wording on the movie theater marquee in the background of the scene that reads “Crossroads 2: Cross Harder.” “I’ve always thought that ‘Die Hard 2: Die Harder’ is one of the most ridiculously awesome titles for a sequel ,” he said. “And I needed to put something in the marquee, and I thought it would be a really fun Easter egg for fans.” Now something odd happens with the paparazzi who’ve been hit by Spears’ microphone weapon — they are revealed to be robots or androids. “I love pop culture and this whole video is kind of a dream sequence,” Piliero said. “I think it’s natural to have fantasies and dreams with stuff inspired by pop culture, so that’s why the robot guys kind of have a ‘Terminator’-ish feel.” Before the “Terminator” ‘bots can move in on Spears, Diaz drives up in a sports car and whisks her away, where he celebrates by pouring a carton of milk all over himself. “Guillermo kills it in the scene with the milk, he’s hilarious,” Piliero enthused. “And I love Britney’s reaction there; both her reactions where she’s laughing are so good. A lot of people ask about the milk and what the deal with it is, a lot of people have theories too, I don’t need to say what the point is, because I love hearing what people say, so I’ll leave it at that. Same goes with the seashells too.” Cut to the final scene, where we realize that it was all a dream. Spears is at the press conference, shaken out of a daze when Guillermo steps in and tells the reporters, “No more questions,” then hands Spears a handful of those seashells that Piliero won’t explain. He looks back at the camera at the last moment and we see his eyes are robot red, an obvious nod to Michael Jackson’s zombie-green eyes in the last shot of “Thriller.” ” ‘Thriller is one of my favorite music videos ever,” Piliero said. “I remember watching it when I was five, that was what inspired me to become a music video director so I wanted to pay homage to it.” What do you think the milk and the seashells signify in “I Wanna Go”? Director Chris Marrs Piliero talks about working with Brit and his favorite scene from the fun clip. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Hugh Swingle Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” music video Photo: Jive Britney Spears looks like she’s having a blast in her new “I Wanna Go” video . It’s full of fun pop-culture references and has Brit seeking vengeance against the paparazzi . Now, the director of the kitschy clip, Chris Marrs Piliero, has opened up about working with the pop megastar. “Meeting Britney for the first time was really rad. She was really cool. I don’t think anyone has the right to be a diva, but there are some artists out there, they’ve been in the game long enough [that] if any one of those artists … might have the permission to be a diva, she definitely has earned it — and she wasn’t whatsoever,” he told the MTV Buzzworthy blog . So what’s Spears like? “She’s super polite; she’s ridiculously polite. She’s soft-spoken,” he said. “She’s really cute. The way she talks and interacts, you want to hug her. She was super professional, super game. … It was rad. It was awesome working with her. She’s a rad chick.” Another highlight of the shoot for Piliero was working with “Weeds” star Guillermo Diaz on one of the final scenes. In the last part of the video, Spears and the actor are riding in a convertible in the desert as Brit dances around. Diaz displays his comedic chops by doing things like pouring milk all over himself. “It was definitely a funny moment of the shoot. We let the cameras roll, and the reaction that you see from Britney is definitely a genuine reaction,” the director recalled. “When I was going through the footage, I loved the way that she responded. It’s so genuine and so funny. It’s perfect [and] it definitely is a perfect description of how we all felt about that scene.” Let us know what you think of Britney’s “I Wanna Go” video in the comments! Nicki Minaj joined the bedazzled pop star onstage at the Staples Center for ‘Till the World Ends.’ By Kelley L. Carter Britney Spears performs at the Staples Center on Monday Photo: David Tonnessen/ PacificCoastNews/ Newscom LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears is back. Not that she’d entirely left, mind you. But the Spears that captivated the audience at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles on Monday night was the old, fun-loving, free-wheeling Spears — with a sexy, showgirl twist. There wasn’t much pretense, though those glamazon outfits blinded in the best way possible. Instead, there was just good dance music. Spears opened her Femme Fatale Tour last week in Sacramento, and for the most part she stuck to script. There was flash and substance, and Spears appeared as the 29-year-old version of her former self, looking amazing in bedazzled leotards, barely-there cutoffs and midriff-baring outfits. Show openers Jessie and the Toy Boys, Nervo, and Nicki Minaj set the stage for what was to be a fast-paced night. In her own skintight outfits, Minaj did exactly what an opening act should do: whet the appetite for the main course. For Spears’ part, she went through about nine songs from her most recent album, Femme Fatale, opening her set with her lusty dance track “Hold It Against Me.” She spent nearly two hours grinding her way through a series of her biggest hits including “3,” “Piece of Me,” “If U Seek Amy” and a remix of “Boys.” A highlight of the night — though, let’s face it, nearly every twist and turn she made was met with ear-piercing shrills from the Spears Faithful — was when she straddled a larger-than-life-size guitar to perform a cover of Madonna’s “Burning Up.” And she nearly brought the house down when she performed “Slave 4 U” with the original choreography (minus the snake). One tweak, perhaps, from last week’s shows, is that instead of having Minaj appear via video for “Till the World Ends,” the rapper joined the pop singer onstage. There were times throughout the night when it was obvious that Spears was lip-synching, but no one in the audience seemed to mind one bit. They were there to be served a shot of Spears straight-up. And they got what they came for. Have you seen Britney on tour? Share your own show reviews in the comments! Related Artists Britney Spears
