Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Is ‘Gonna Inspire People,’ Skrillex Says

‘The underground is gonna change,’ dubstep star tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali, with reporting by Adam Stewart Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive While a more complete demo told only part of the story Monday, legions of Britney Spears fans have no doubt spent the better part of Tuesday morning (January 1) reveling in Brit Brit’s return with her new single, “Hold It Against Me,” which was made available for download at midnight. In many ways, Ms. Spears has served up a jam in line with popular music’s current craze, EDM (electronic dance music), but make no mistake, “Against Me” is a hard-hitting thumper of a pop electro-house tune. What’s especially unique about the Dr. Luke- and Max Martin-produced single is that, in typical trailblazing fashion, Spears has saluted the dance music world by including a section of dubstep in the surefire radio hit. About 2:20 into the song, the track slips into a simple dubstep break with Spears calling out, “Gimme something good/ Don’t want to wait, I want it now/ Drop it like a hood, and show me how you work it out.” Already, less than 24 hours after the song’s official release, some are questioning whether Spears has hammered a nail into dubstep’s coffin. Some of underground EDM’s purist fans are worried that Spears has watered down their guarded and beloved art form. But the current prince of dubstep told MTV News he thinks Spears is doing a great thing for the genre, even though he isn’t in love with the section used in “Against Me.” “The more the stuff that is underground becomes mainstream, the more the underground is gonna change,” Skrillex explained Monday. “I think it’s gonna inspire people to obviously do something different.” Los Angeles-based Skrillex, born Sonny Moore, has a background in the post-hardcore metal scene, but in the past two years, has achieved popular success in the EDM world. He signed with deadmau5 ‘s mau5trap records and, toward the end of 2010, released a slew of dubstep singles that topped beatport.com’s chart, even holding eight positions on the dance-music site’s top 10 at one point. “I thought the track [“Against Me”] was great overall,” the face of popular new dubstep said. “I’ll be honest, man: I love Max Martin. I think he’s an absolute genius. And Dr. Luke did it, right? I think they are a f—ing dream team. I love the track! “I thought the dubstep part was unnecessary,” he continued. “Not to say it was done wrong. I feel like it was very self-aware and consciously put in there to be ‘the dubstep part.’ I can see a lot of people getting pissed about it — the purist dubstep and drum and bass fans — but at the end of the day, it’s cool that people are trying new things. Sooner or later, anything that happens in the underground — be it watered down or not — it always makes itself into the mainstream. It’s cool to hear.” To Spears’ credit, Skrillex, who it would seem couldn’t come from a more opposite musical background than Spears, spoke of her legacy. “I really respect her,” he admitted. “From being a Mouseketeer to all the controversial stuff and to all the stuff she has been through. She does have an incredible legacy and an incredible story. The fact that she is still making records just says a lot.” Do you think “Hold It Against Me” will have an impact on dubstep? Mila Kunis, Macaulay Culkin Split

Couple had been dating since 2002. By Jocelyn Vena Macaulay Culkin and Mila Kunis Photo: Getty Images While Natalie Portman is getting married and expecting a baby with Benjamin Millepied , her “Black Swan” co-star Mila Kunis is back on the market. Kunis and her longtime boyfriend, Macaulay Culkin, have officially split. “The split was amicable, and they remain close friends,” Kunis’ rep told the New York Post ‘s Page Six about the breakup. The duo began dating in 2002, when Kunis was starring on “That ’70s Show.” According to a Post source, “The couple split some time ago but has kept it low-key while Kunis promotes the movie.” Back in 2009, in an interview with BlackBook, Kunis shared her reservations about marriage. “Not to say that I don’t believe in it, but it’s just not something that’s important to me,” she explained. “But I will have children. I’m too selfish to have them now, but when I do, I don’t feel like I need to be married. I need to have a person in my life who will care for me and my children — nothing else.” In the same interview, Kunis opened up about dating Culkin, noting, “I don’t remember being single. I love coming home, taking a bath and having a glass of wine. I love my life.” The Golden Globe-nominated actress made it clear that right now her focus is on her revitalized acting career. “I don’t know that I could do Shakespeare, but I don’t know that I couldn’t. It’s like ballet. Did I ever think I could get en pointe and be a prima ballerina? No. But, give me two months,” Kunis said. “I will work my ass off and do everything in my power to get it done.”

Justin Bieber Calls His Genre ‘Just Good Music’

‘It’s not a specific type of music,’ Biebs tells MTV News at Q100 event. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News While observers may attribute Justin Bieber’s overwhelming ascension into pop superstardom this year to his boyish charm or that perfectly coiffed hair, most of the “Bieber Fever” can be traced to the chart-dominating success and catchy tunes from not one, but the two albums he released this year. But don’t confine him to the “pop star” category. When MTV News caught up with the teen phenom at a charity event for Atlanta’s Q100 radio station recently, Bieber said he doesn’t think of his music as a specific genre. “Whatever comes out of my mouth is just what you guys are going to hear,” Bieber explained of his lyrical stylings. “I don’t know, it’s not a specific type of music. Whatever music I write, I wouldn’t say I’m pop or R&B or country or anything: I would just say it’s just good music,” he said with confidence. To the busy 16-year-old’s credit, he’s been working with such a variety of artists, from Usher to Kanye West and Raekwon , and on future projects with Diddy, Lil Twist and Rascal Flatts , that the young man is certainly covering his musical bases. Not to mention the fact that he also recently introduced his legions of fans to his alter ego, rapper Shawty Mane . With his big-screen debut, “Never Say Never,” and a tour with Willow Smith on the way in 2011, in addition to whatever “good music” he puts out from all of those collaborations, the Biebs is definitely exploring all of his options. Britney Spears Vs. Lady Gaga: Which Diva Will Rule 2011?

Gaga’s Born This Way and Spears’ new album both coming early in year. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images In 2010, Lady Gaga battled Taylor Swift for female pop domination, but in 2011, Gaga is going up against none other than career pop star Britney Spears. It should be a truly epic battle of the blondes, and it’s made even more interesting because the two not only share sonic similarities, but also have very similar fanbases of loyal devotees waiting to hear new notes from the chart-topping lasses. In 2008, both Gaga and Spears released new music (Gaga with The Fame and Britney with Circus ), and the ladies each released compilation albums in 2009 (Gaga’s The Fame Monster and Britney’s second greatest-hits collection, The Singles Collection ), but never have their releases really come face to face as they will this year. Gaga is set to release her single in February, with her full album, Born This Way , to follow sometime after. Meanwhile, Britney will have her first single out very early in 2011, with the album set for release in March . So, which bombshell will rise to the top of the heap? MTV News asked music critics to weigh in. “I think the thing about Gaga is: Her persona is really experimental, but her music isn’t, and I think she’s gonna have to really come out with some different stuff to make it more interesting,” writer Julianne Escobedo-Shepherd proposed. “I think her fanbase is so solid that she’ll be fine no matter what she does.” New York Times writer Jon Caramanica noted that no one can guess what Gaga has up her sleeve for her next album, but it will be interesting. “I see Gaga changing every six months,” he said. “I think she’s trying new ideas. Maybe they’re not all hits or they’re not all successful, but I think she’s trying new things, so if you look at how Gaga’s going to evolve, I don’t think we can say where Gaga’s gonna land,” he explained, “but I think we can say reliably it’s going to be really interesting.” How does a vet like Britney compete with a newbie? Escobedo-Shepherd explained that Spears is actually in a great place to do it. “She’s got a blank slate right now,” she said. “People don’t know what to expect from her. I think the fact that maybe she’s being more experimental shows that she feels freer a little bit, and I think it’s going to show in the music,” she predicted. “In the music sphere, I think that Britney’s gonna win, but Gaga’s so on top you can’t top her, even if you’re Britney.” RapRadar.com’s Elliot Wilson noted that right now, “It’s Gaga’s game to lose,” and Complex ‘s Noah Callahan said Spears’ vet status could work in her favor. “The thing with Britney Spears that makes it work for her is that she’s been around for so long that people are invested in her narrative, and even when the records are so-so, they still have the desire to see her succeed as an individual,” he said. “I don’t really know what to expect from Lady Gaga in 2011. I do know that she will definitely throw us a curveball and do something that is unexpected.” Do you expect Gaga or Britney to rule 2011? Give us your prediction in the comments below! Britney Spears To Premiere ‘Hold It Against Me’ On January 7

Radio program director says the track produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin has a ‘really unique’ beat. By James Dinh Britney Spears Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage Britney Spears is making sure to start the year off right with new music. As speculated, the pop princess is set to premiere her brand-new track called “Hold It Against Me” late next week, according to Entertainment Weekly. In the latest issue of the magazine, Sharon Dastur, program director for New York’s Z100, dished a few details about the pop star’s anticipated new single. “It’s produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin,” Dastur revealed. “And the beat that they give her is really unique compared to other artists — this infectious bass beat beneath the song. Plus, the hook is just amazing. It will be out on January 7.” Rumored lyrics to “Hold It Against Me” circulated on the Internet earlier this week, but Britney’s camp has yet to confirm whether they are real or not. And while details about the track remain scarce, a tweet from Dr. Luke indicated that it will feature a guitar. Fans began speculating about Britney’s new single when PopJustice.com reported on the song earlier this month. Dr. Luke also began to tease fans about the tune, tweeting, “I/we never wrote a song called ‘don’t hold it against me’…. BewaRe of InaccuraTe info kids 😉 We did write ‘hold it against me’ but those lyrics are NOT the lyrics ….” Swedish producer Shellback recently spoke about Spears’ work ethic and professionalism while working on her new LP, which drops in March. “[Britney]’s actually damn professional. You read a lot on the Internet that Britney is not singing and mimes, but she is actually damn professional,” he said. “She’s done it since she was 16. And just rhythmic way, she is f—ing awesome! And you do not have to go through and talk about the rhythms and stuff that you sometimes have to do. She’s very easy in the studio.” The “3” singer has already begun casting dancers for a new music video. Just last week, the fansite BreatheHeavy.com posted a notice sent out by Britney’s team announcing auditions for a video shooting in January. In a video purported to be shot during auditions, which were coordinated by choreographer and former Britney collaborator Brian Friedman, dancers are seen learning a routine to “Criminal Intent” by Swedish songstress Robyn.
