‘Hunger Games’ Costume Designer Reveals Biggest Wardrobe Challenge

‘The dress [had] a very big chance of coming off as cheesy,’ Judianna Makovsky says of Katniss’ interview frock. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in the girl on fire costume in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Costume designer Judianna Makovsky has been a member of Gary Ross’ cinematic glam squad for years. That’s why when ” The Hunger Games ” director was piecing together a pitch as to why he should helm the dystopian drama, he made a late-night call to his trusted colleague. The thrice-Oscar-nominated designer has collaborated with Ross on a number of his films, including “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit,” and now the duo may be working on their highest-profile project yet — one in which wild wigs, garish gowns and flame-licked jumpsuits are just another day at the office. In anticipation of the March 23 release of “The Hunger Games,” MTV News put in a call to Makovsky to talk about the Capitol’s crazy couture and how author Suzanne Collins’ elaborate vision was brought to life — albeit with a few alterations. MTV : How much did you know about “The Hunger Games” before Gary Ross came calling? Judianna Makovsky : I had not read them, I have to admit. I hadn’t even heard of them. But Gary Ross had called me, and his kids loved them, and he said, “I really want to do this movie.” I was on another movie set in Shreveport, Louisiana. He said, “You have to go get it,” and I said, “It’s 10 o’clock at night.” He said, “You have to get it first thing in the morning. You have to read it.” I’m like, “OK.” And then I was sending him images every day so he could start thinking. They were talking to several directors, and he really wanted to do it. It was great to start that early with him — trying to find images that were useful to him. MTV : I have to imagine reading the series and Suzanne Collins’ vivid descriptions were an evocative experience for an artist like you. Makovsky : I have to say, I try to read everything like a fan, but I also read it as a costume designer, and I go, “Oh my god. How do you do that?” Also, I was lucky enough to have a meeting with Suzanne, and a lot of things that are in the written word do not translate well to film. Lucky for me, she understood that and knew that and said, “Do what you need to do. If you think it’s not going to translate, I understand.” And she was great about it. MTV : Did you show her any of your drawings? Makovsky : At that point, if was fairly early. We had very few. We had already done mood boards for the districts and where we wanted to go. And, yes, she was there for that and loved all of that. It was great. MTV : What were your initial discussions with Gary Ross like? Makovsky : The initial discussions always start with character. I would say on this movie, we started with the world that they were going to live in. Philip Messina is the production designer. I’ve worked with him before; we’re a great team. Gary, Phil and I all sat down and just talked about what this world was going to be, and how do you have District 12 — how does that reflect in the Capitol? Because it is all the same planet, it is all the same time period. So they have to make sense together … Before Gary got the job, we sent him all these images of coal-mining towns and all these things. He picked up some of them and just went, “This is it. This isn’t a period movie, but I want the feel of these photographs.” So it was basically a discussion about the world they lived in, and then we started talking about individual characters. MTV : As you started working on each character, how much input did the individual actors have? Makovsky : There’s no point in designing particular things until you know who the actor is, whether I have a discussion with them or not. Katniss, I worked very closely with Jen [ Jennifer Lawrence ] because she was cast first. I had actually worked with Josh [Hutcherson] before, so that made that easy. I had worked with Donald Sutherland before. A lot of the actors were unavailable for fittings. They were all over the world shooting things. I sent them images, then I did sketches for them. Then we basically made it without them and they showed up and put it on! I have to say, the age of the Internet is a fabulous thing. You can scan things and send things and have these discussions at three in the morning when they’re in Budapest or wherever. MTV : Which outfit posed the biggest challenge to you? Makovsky : I think the interview dress. I think it was the hardest because the description in the book was something every fan loves but, honestly, in my opinion, and in all of our opinions, it wasn’t going to translate. Having this dress covered in flame-like jewels, you know, it’s no longer about Katniss. It’s about the dress. Also, the dress has a chance, a very big chance, of coming off as cheesy. MTV : I can see how it might verge into figure-skating-costume territory. Makovsky : See, that’s what I was worried about. It was going to be a “Dancing With the Stars” dress. I said, “I think we shouldn’t go that way.” First of all, all those jewels, it’s going to be so heavy it won’t twirl. She won’t be able to move or walk. People don’t realize that. I decided that it should really be about Katniss, and I wanted a young, fresh, modern couture cut, that when you first see her beautiful dress and she does her twirl, it does what it does. I mean, the bottom does have Swarovski crystals on it. But I really wanted it to be about Katniss. How beautifully she has transformed. It’s not the dress that transformed her. It’s her. Her beauty comes through. MTV : Fans were also really excited to see Katniss’ sleek Girl on Fire outfit. You have a bit of experience with jumpsuits from working on “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Did you hearken back to those superheroes for inspiration? Makovsky : I actually had the woman who made my “X-Men” jumpsuits make these costumes for me. She’s a genius at that kind of fit. Everyone thinks it’s leather — it’s not leather. It’s a novelty stretch fabric with this embossed plastic on it. It’s a very strange fabric. There’s also some stretch patent leather in there, but there’s no leather. I just wanted something that would have this incredible silhouette and have the shine of coal. In the books, it’s actually described a little bit more bland to me. It sounds like leotards and tights with high boots. It has a cape. There were all kinds of things that had to change because of physical and practical things on a chariot. The description in the book — Katniss and Peeta wear the same thing. Katniss had this fabulous headdress, but you put the headdress on Peeta and it looks pretty stupid. You can’t always do the same for a boy and a girl. MTV : Even though Katniss is the one in the spotlight, everyone seems to be most excited about Effie Trinket’s looks. Makovsky : She’s the essence of the Capitol. Working with Elizabeth [Banks] — Oh my god! I had so much fun. I’ve worked with her before. She actually called me before she was allowed to because her deal wasn’t done. She said, “I think we should start now. I’m coming over.” I had all these ideas that I had pulled out, fabric swatches and whatever. She came over and looked at what would work for her. We tried shapes on her, and they kept growing and growing and growing. It was really funny. Just to give her a certain walk. Effie is very prim in a funny way. So we wanted that primness to come through even though we sort of wanted to lampoon high fashion a little bit. It’s a little bit silly but it is still pretty. 9 Pro Tips for Landing That Action Star Gig from John Carter’s Taylor Kitsch

Taylor Kitsch is about to have a very big 2012. In addition to carrying Disney’s ambitious sci-fi adaptation John Carter as the titular Edgar Rice Burroughs hero, a Civil War veteran transported to Mars, he’s also fronting Peter Berg’s alien invasion actioner Battleship and starring in Oliver Stone ’s Savages later this year. But as Kitsch revealed to Movieline, the John Carter job wasn’t easy to get — and the toll it took on him during production was a challenge in itself. So who better to offer pro tips on nabbing the spotlight and handling the pressure of becoming an action hero than Kitsch, on the eve of a new chapter in his career? It should be noted that Kitsch is no stranger to action, having appeared in films like Snakes on a Plane , The Covenant , and X-Men Origins: Wolverine already in his six-year career, and no stranger to the spotlight thanks to his beloved turn as Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights . But John Carter marks his first starring role and by far his biggest film to date, a sprawling epic set on a vast alien world envisioned in great detail by director Andrew Stanton ( Finding Nemo , WALL-E ). So how did Kitsch land the coveted role? What does his John Carter role share in common with his last one, as the late South African photojournalist Kevin Carter, in The Bang Bang Club ? All this and more as Taylor Kitsch shares his pro tips on landing (and keeping) that action hero gig. 1. Don’t think of yourself as an action star . “That’s you guys labeling me, so me saying yes to that – I can’t say yes to that because I refuse to put myself in that bubble. You saw Bang Bang Club , that’s no action movie. We hope to keep throwing you curveballs so you can’t put me in a spot like that.” 2. Ignore the hype and the naysayers – worry about putting pressure on yourself to do the work so you can sleep at night . “The pressure is what I put myself on in the sense of getting and doing the best I can, and having no regrets with what I put into it. That’s the pressure. The pressure now is that you can overthink everything, from how it’s going to do and how people are going to perceive it, you, this and that. If you want to drive yourself crazy over that you can, but I think that’s why you put so much into it. So you can lay down at night and be okay with what you did and be like, you know what? I still wouldn’t change it. If you say I’m fucking shit, I still wouldn’t change it.” 3. Be picky. Taking on a blockbuster gig is a huge commitment, so make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. “Hopefully you feel that, you see it. You see the emotion and the energy that it takes to really do what it deserves, potentially. I think that’s what it’s about, and that’s why I’m so picky with the jobs. I’m all in. I’m never going to do a job for the sake of working. So we’re at a point now of looking at the next job, or whatever that is, and my people, my team, have been with me from Day One. If I don’t work for a year, I’m OK with it. We’re not going to do it unless we have to do it. “I was and still am okay with doing indies for the rest of my life. I don’t need to be in the spotlight; if anything, I’ll push it away even more. I live in Austin. I love the work. I love the storytelling, and that’s what the first meeting represented. I could play so many parts in this one character, from the Western, from the guy that doesn’t give a shit, to the guy who’s finally come full circle and become the leader that he’s pushed away for so long. I love that, and I love working with an Andrew Stanton, a Willem Dafoe, a Mark Strong, a Sam Morton, a Thomas Haden Church, a Lynn Collins.” 4. Make sure there is a “there” there. “Man, I will be shit if you give me nothing to play. Any actor will tell you, the more you can give me, the more depth I can escape into, the better it’s going to be on every level.” 5. Flawed characters are more interesting to play, and are worth diving into headfirst — even if it takes a lot out of you. “It’s not the war thing, but the more interesting guys I grew up watching — I like watching the more flawed guys than the perfect guys, and that’s more interesting for me to play. That’s more real to me. I love that and I love bringing people into a performance and it takes so fucking much out of you to do it honestly, but it’s worth it. Kev Carter – you won’t meet a guy more flawed. That crushed me.” 6. Remember to maintain balance with the emotional and physical demands of carrying a tentpole… especially when they require regular, long-term maintenance of action-hero muscles. “I was beyond exhausted in this film. Yeah, six day weeks is what killed me. I think I just pushed myself — I don’t regret it because you see it, but at times I could have had a better balance, maybe, just because waking up that early so often and the lack of sleep and pushing yourself that much, to have that much energy onscreen… for seven months, to be at that aesthetic! It’d be a lot easier if I had one shirtless scene and I could just get toned for that then be OK and balance it out, but it was 11 months that I was on that diet and training regimen. It’s very unreal to do that and to look that way, obviously, but it’s what I guess I demanded out of myself. This goes back to Kev [Carter, of the Bang Bang Club ], too. No one asked me to lose a pound, I wanted to. 7. That said, don’t worry too much about how you look, stud . “Fuck, man. You never want to be that conscious in a scene. That’d mean I’d be so totally out of John Carter mode, if I’m really that conscious of how I look and the lighting. That’s really bad. [But] you definitely have to do what you have to do to put yourself in the moment so it’s connecting to whatever it is. I think you’ve just got to get to a point where you’re okay with how you look and what you’re doing and you leave it and let it lay. Whatever it is, I look at that scene and it is what it is” 8. Go out for a role knowing it’s yours to lose. The audition process for John Carter was particularly grueling, with five actors and five actresses vying for the same roles over the course of two intense days. “Man, I was just so focused, I was so myopic with it. I prepped so much for that audition. I’ve always been an underdog and I came in on this gig that way, but it was like I felt it was mine to lose. I went in with that thinking really, if I can go in all out on this, I’m going to go in and kill it as much as I can. But it was a tough process, for sure. Two 14-hour days… and you’ve got to remember, what’s bizarre about getting roles and auditioning for the most part is you do your prep and everything for the most part after you get the role. It’s like OK, now I’ve got to sit down and really sketch this guy out. It’s a trip. “ 9. Whatever you do, do not go out partying the night before a big audition. “I won’t call the guy out, but I know and it gave me more oomph, put it that way, knowing that this one guy that was up for it was out partying quite hard the night before or two nights before. No matter what, I hear about that and I know I got ya, man. It’s like, good on ya for making it a little bit easier on me.” John Carter is in theaters this week. Read more on the film here . Rihanna And Chris Brown Collaboration ‘Not Surprising’

One domestic-violence expert talks to MTV News about the former couple’s new songs. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Brown and Rihanna in 2009 Photo: Getty Images When Rihanna and Chris Brown dropped not one, but two tracks together Monday night, the songs were met with mixed reactions. Some fans thought it was time for everyone to move on and embrace the former couple’s next chapter, while others argued that given Brown’s 2009 assault on Rihanna, it was inappropriate for them to record together. In the years since that assault, Rihanna has been open about her abusive relationship with the R&B singer, saying, “I don’t want to be the big domestic-violence spokesperson, because that doesn’t define who I am. But if I can help young women in any way, and that being one of the things they need help with, then I’ll do that.” Since that late 2009 interview with MTV News, Rihanna certainly hasn’t backed down in her career, releasing chart-topping singles, winning awards, going on tour and using videos and Twitter to show the world just how fierce she can be. After the release of the “Birthday Cake” and “Turn up the Music” remixes , Rita Smith, the executive director for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, talked to MTV News about what the collaborations mean. “I guess I’m not particularly surprised given the rumors that had gone on around this, and it’s also not surprising because many victims get back with their abusers, even after an assault. They love them, they think they change, and abusers are particularly good at convincing you they’ve changed,” she said. “I don’t know what their relationship is at this point, but I’m not surprised that she’s staying connected. “I’m still concerned because his reaction to people’s criticism of him being on the Grammys was fairly belligerent, and that didn’t give me much of a message or sense of hope that he had made changes since that assault,” she said, referring to the barrage of tweets Brown sent out after negative feedback about his Grammy appearance . “I hope he’s changed. I hope that he will never choose to use violence again no matter what kind of relationship he has with her or anybody else,” she continued. “I think, for me, it would be much more powerful if they could publicly state what’s different for them so that it doesn’t just leave us wondering if anything has changed and if they have learned anything in the process, because it was so public. We’re all wondering, because they’re not saying anything. That would leave us with a different message that it all doesn’t matter and they’re just going to do what they do.” Smith said that, given their history, “I think the message she’s sending is that the feelings of being in love are more important than your personal safety.” “The thing that matters most is whether you’re safe and whether you feel respected — that’s what matters most in a relationship and that’s what we should all be focusing on,” Smith added. “That has to be the primary goal of any relationship.” In the end, Smith hopes the two pop stars have grown since the very public assault. “I don’t know what the message is. I would like the message to be: People can change, and I will never be treated that way again and I will never treat anyone that way again. If they had released a song saying this is what this represents for us, that would be such a much more fabulous, powerful story than not saying a word,” she said. “The content of the songs seems to be more in-your-face than something about ‘we’re collaborating on something because we care about the way people treat each other.’ That would have been the message that would have been nice to come out of this very public and tragic incident.” What do you think of Chris Brown and Rihanna working together in light of their history? Katy Perry Exploring ‘Deep’ Themes On New Music

Songwriter Bonnie McKee opens up to MTV News about the “real” songs she’s writing with Perry. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Katy Perry Photo: Jeff Bottari/ Getty Images Katy Perry ‘s new single, “Part of Me,” certainly shows a not-often-explored side of the pop singer. The scathing break-up track is all about the end of a great love and the empowerment one feels after watching that person walk away. It’s darker than “California Gurls,” that’s for sure. Considering the timing of the track’s release, it’s hard not to think that it’s about her former husband, Russell Brand . It’s the lead single off her March release, Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, and it kicks off a new era of songwriting for the usually candy-coated pop star, her pal and frequent collaborator Bonnie McKee told MTV News last week, just days before she dropped the track. “I’ve been working with Katy Perry a lot more, so I’m excited for what we have coming out next,” she explained. The twosome already have a long history with one another having already cooked up hits like “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” off 2010’s Teenage Dream. “I’m working with Katy and it’s great,” she continued. “I’m really excited and I think everyone is going to really relate to and love what she’s doing next. It’s kind of a departure from what she’s been doing in the past. We are a great team when we write together because we don’t let each other settle; every single line is a philosophical debate.” That means that while their past collaborations have focused on the sugary-sweet, this time they are looking deeper for their lyrical content. “She’s going through some major life changes, so it’s not all about bubble gum and fun; it’s real and it’s deep and she has a lot to say. So I think people are anxious to hear it,” she said, adding that while there are those people who are rooting for the star, there will also always be the haters. “You know what? The numbers don’t lie,” she said to those folks. “Katy Perry is a star for the people … she’s unstoppable and she’s proven that.” What do you think of “Part of Me”? ‘Smash’ Stars Explain Marilyn Monroe Mystique

‘She was just a classic, iconic American beauty, an American star,’ series star Katharine McPhee tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Marilyn Monroe in “Niagara” Photo: 20th Century Fox It seems like no matter where you turn in the pop culture realm lately, you are more than likely to find a reference to blond bombshell Marilyn Monroe . Nearly 50 years after Monroe died at the age of 36, she is still considered one of the most iconic figures in Hollywood history. So it’s no surprise that in 2012 she is having another shining moment. She was brought to life by Michelle Williams in her Oscar-nominated role in “My Week With Marilyn,” was paid homage in Madonna’s video for “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” and channeled by Nicki Minaj in her leaked track, fittingly titled “Marilyn Monroe.” And each week on the new hit series “Smash,” two aspiring stars vie to play her in a role for a Broadway musical. So why is Marilyn’s life back in the spotlight? Well, according to the cast of “Smash,” she never left. “I think she’s always had a moment,” Katharine McPhee told MTV News at the “Smash” premiere. “I think people are just intrigued by her life and how she left us too early. She was just a classic, iconic American beauty, an American star. There was a real innocence and sweetness to her, I think.” McPhee’s co-star Anjelica Huston agrees. “I don’t really think she’s been out of fashion for very long. She’s an iconic figure, maybe the most beautiful, the most enduring blond ever. That’s why 50 years later, she remains as iconic as she ever was.” It’s not just her outer beauty that have left people intrigued by Monroe. Her complicated and sad true-life story — of an orphan named Norma Jean turned sex symbol Marilyn Monroe — has kept people interested as well. “I think she’s extremely relatable. Her story is fascinating, and anybody who doesn’t know anything about her life really should take a minute and read any of the many biographies that are out there on her,” “Smash” co-star Megan Hilty said. “Behind all this glamour, adoration, she was a very lonely person, and I think a lot of people can identify with that part of her. And they also look up to her for the glamorous side. She is so many different things to so many different people that we’ll be talking about her for years to come.” Why do you think Marilyn Monroe is having a moment? Let us know in the comments.

Adele Reveals ‘Rumour Has It’ Is Next Single

The 21 track will hit radio in March. By Jocelyn Vena Adele Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Riding off the success of her six Grammy wins, Adele plans to release “Rumour Has It,” her fourth 21 single. The song’s producer and co-writer, Ryan Tedder, confirmed the news to Billboard.com on the red carpet at Sunday’s show. “I found out three days ago that I have the next single,” he said about the song, which will follow the massively successful singles “Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain” and “Someone Like You.” He added, “I’m very excited about it.” The song will hit pop, adult pop and adult contemporary radio in mid-March, Adele’s label confirmed. And although that will mark the song’s official release, it had seen some radio play on adult alternative radio. It was also featured on “Glee” in December, which gave it a boost on the Billboard charts. “I’m just excited that somebody as raw and real as that has cut through at radio and cut through at culture,” Tedder said. “I’ve never seen anything like it, I feel honored to be involved with it.” News of the single comes just as Adele returned to the spotlight with a triumphant performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards , where she took the stage for the first time since throat surgery in a November. The singer performed her chart-topping track “Rolling in the Deep.” Adele also graces the March cover of Vogue, in which she reveals that while she’s focused much of her songwriting on heartbreak, her next album may touch on other subjects. “Come on! I’m wifey material! I’m great. No one’s got to be brave. It’s not like, ‘You f— me over and I’m going to write a record and make you the most hated man in the world.’ I am never writing a breakup record again, by the way,” she said. “I’m done with being a bitter witch.” Stick with MTV News all for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy and get your daily fashion fix from the editors at MTV Style.
