Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’: Story Behind The ‘Glee’ Cover

Hit show covered two Bieber songs on Tuesday night’s episode. By Aly Semigran “Glee” cast on Tuesday’s episode Photo: FOX Just in time to mend the wounded hearts of Justin Bieber fans still reeling from his Grammy loss on Sunday, “Glee” paid tribute to the pop powerhouse the best way they know how: by covering two of his hit songs, “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” During Tuesday night’s new episode, “Comeback,” Chord Overstreet’s worrisome Sam attempts to woo back his possibly straying lady (Dianna Agron) by serenading her in glee club’s practice room with a rendition of Bieber’s “Baby.” But before a Bieber-ized Chord (The purple hoodie! The hair!) belted out the simple yet addictive chorus — “I was like, baby, baby, baby, ooh,” — on the show, the song, and its subsequent video, helped propel Bieber to staggering fame. Released as the lead single off of Bieber’s gold-certified debut studio album My World 2.0, “Baby” first hit the airwaves in late January 2010. The song begins quietly, with Bieber harmonizing accompanied by a guitar, and unfolds into a three-and-a-half-minute unapologetic pop/R&B smash. Bieber co-wrote the track with rapper Ludacris (who appears on the song), Christina Milian, and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and Terius “The-Dream” Nash (both of whom also worked with the 16-year-old on his single “One Time”), and it has been his biggest single to date. Though it never reached #1 on the Billboard charts (it debuted at #5 on the Hot 100 ) in the United States, nor in Bieber’s native Canada, “Baby” became certified platinum the world over. The song fared even better as a digital download , going to #1 in the U.S. after it was released on March 23, 2010. Bieber continued to bring “Baby” to the masses, performing the song on various TV programs like “Saturday Night Live” (he was the musical guest on April 10, 2010), “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Kids Choice Awards” and the “Today” show, in which throngs of Beliebers showed up on the plaza at Rockefeller Center to sing along. But it’s the music video for “Baby” that’s made the biggest impact. The clip features cameos by Bieber’s friend and fellow Canadian performer Drake, as well as “Baby” collaborator Lucadris. ‘Cris, who first met Bieber in Atlanta in 2009, told MTV News last year that the video reminded him of “a 2010 version of Michael Jackson’s ‘The Way You Make Me Feel.’ ” While Ludacris predicted, “Mark my word, [‘Baby’ is] going to be one of the biggest songs of the year 2010,” there was no indication of things to come for the video. Last week, ReadWriteWeb.com reported that Bieber’s “Baby” clip is the most-watched YouTube video of all time. It currently has a staggering 463,506,023 hits, besting other viral vids like Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and “Charlie Bit Me.” Since then, the song has been included on the compilation album Now 34: That’s What I Call Music! and is currently featured in Bieber’s 3-D documentary/concert film “Never Say Never” and has been used in the movie’s trailers. The G-rated movie earned an impressive $30.3 million in its opening weekend. What did you think of the “Glee” renditions of Bieber’s songs? Tell us in the comments. Arcade Fire, Radiohead Signal That Rock Is (Finally) Rising

Clearly, something is happening, and just in time for the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images In January, fresh off a year in which albums by mainstays like Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance stiffed, and efforts by up-and-comers like MGMT mystified, we published an article that wondered, rather matter-of-factly, “Is Rock Dead?” At the time, it seemed a perfectly reasonable thing to ask. After all, for all intents and purposes, rock music was dead in 2010: Nickelback’s Dark Horse was the year’s best-selling rock album (even though it was released in November 2008), lumbering bands like Alter Bridge, Disturbed and Shinedown continued to dominate radio, and even the chart-topping successes of indie acts like Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire were dismissed as little more than flukes: They only reached #1, the argument went, because there were no hip-hop or pop albums released that same week. And with absolutely zero big-ticket rock releases on the horizon, things were looking equally bleak for 2011. But in the six weeks since we originally published that article, something pretty amazing happened: Rock proved that, much like Jason Voorhees, it can be drowned, stabbed, dragged to hell and cryogenically frozen, but it cannot be killed. At the end of January, the Decemberists’ The King Is Dead inexplicably debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. Last Sunday, at the 53rd Grammys, the Arcade Fire shocked pretty much everybody ( except, it should be noted, me ) by besting Eminem, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to win Album of the Year . On Monday, we learned there would be a brand-new Radiohead album arriving in our inboxes in less than a week. Couple all that with a fantastic new album from Bright Eyes ( The People’s Key, go buy it), the Foo Fighters’ hotly anticipated Wasting Light (which reteams former Nirvana mates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic with producer Butch Vig ) and new albums from the Strokes, Death Cab for Cutie, Coldplay and Blink-182 looming on the horizon — not to mention genuinely great releases from new bands like Warpaint, Smith Westerns and Yuck — and, all of a sudden, rock music doesn’t appear to be dead at all. This isn’t meant to be some “Rock Is Back!” piece (I think we reached critical mass on those sometime around 2002), but it probably could be. Rather, I’m hoping it comes across as nothing more than the blissed-out rejoicings of a long-suffering rock fan. Because, to be perfectly honest, that’s the only angle I’m taking this week. I have worked at MTV News for nearly seven years now, and in that time, I’ve watched as rock and roll lost its grip on popular culture. Bands came and went, nostalgia acts did their victory laps, and nobody — outside of me and a few others — took notice. Rock had been lapped by the likes of Eminem and Lady Gaga, and it didn’t look like it was ever going to overtake them. Maybe it never will. And I don’t care, because, for the first time in a long time, I can unequivocally say: Damn, it feels good to be excited about rock music once again. And given the circular nature of things, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of rock’s last great uprising: the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind, which quickly thrust the genre back into the spotlight and kept it there for most (OK, like, seven years) of the decade. I’m not suggesting that the Arcade Fire winning Album of the Year is a watershed moment on par with Nevermind overtaking Michael Jackson’s Dangerous atop the Billboard chart (as it did in January 1992), but, shoot, it could very well end up that way. Nor am I expecting that, by year’s end, I’ll be writing laudatory pieces about the return of rock. But again, I very well might be. That uncertainty is key, because it contains within it a shred of hope. You never know. And for the first time in a very long time, I can almost trick myself into believing that. Clearly, something is happening, that much is certain. Maybe it’s just natural evolution, or the stars aligning, or just my blind optimism, but in 2011, rock music appears to finally be pulling itself out of its watery grave, machete in hand, ready to cut down innocent campers. And, man, does it feel good to write something like that. It’s been a long time coming, after all. Do you think rock is on its way back? Let us know in the comments!

Skylar Grey ‘Flattered’ Eminem, Dr. Dre Tapped Her For Detox

‘Dr. Dre has been working on it for 10 years and now I’m on a single,’ breakout singer tells MTV News of Grammy night collabo. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Skylar Grey at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Skylar Grey found herself on the largest stage in music at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards when she joined Eminem and Dr. Dre for the duo’s “I Need a Doctor.” The Wisconsin-bred singer penned the chorus for the Alex Da Kid-produced number as well as Em’s Grammy-nominated “Love the Way You Lie” featuring Rihanna. And although the veteran songwriter is used to being behind the scenes, Grey says she enjoyed her time in the spotlight. “I was just flattered that they would involve me on such a project,” she told MTV News on the Grammy red carpet. “Dr. Dre has been working on [ Detox ] for 10 years and now I’m on a single off of it.” Grey’s profile has been increasing lately, from her exposure as the woman behind the moving chorus of “Love the Way You Lie” and T.I.’s “Castle Walls to lending her vocals to “I Need a Doctor” and being featured on Lupe Fiasco’s latest single, “Words I Never Said” and Diddy-Dirty Money’s “Coming Home.” She’s working on her still-untitled solo debut with Alex Da Kid and the two are reaping the benefits of fusing her alt-sounding vocals with the British producer’s sweeping production. “It’s just a creative experience being in the studio with different people,” she said of the pair’s work. “I’m not from the hip-hop world but I think that’s what works for the sound that we got. The combination of the alternative chorus mixed with the hip-hop verses.” Are you eager to hear more music from Skylar Grey? Tell us in the comments! Arcade Fire Throw An Anti-Grammy Party At Secret Show

The Grammy-nominated indie rockers announced details of the Los Angeles theater show just 12 hours before taking the stage. By James Montgomery Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Getty Images LOS ANGELES — It wasn’t the Grammys, and it wasn’t supposed to be. On Friday night, far away from the machinations of the music industry and the glad-handling of golden gramophones, in a grand old theater that now doubles as the Ukrainian Culture Center of Greater Los Angeles, Arcade Fire — the indie band who, at Sunday’s 53rd Grammy Awards , will face off against the likes of Eminem and Lady Gaga for Album of the Year — threw what will probably go down as the week’s greatest un-official, anti-Grammy pre-party: a sweaty, exuberant, all-ages secret show that felt about a million miles removed from the award-show hysteria that has descended on much of the city. Only 500 tickets were sold, in a first-come, first-serve basis at three locations (a pair of record stores and the venerable El Rey Theatre) on Friday afternoon. There was no red carpet outside or a VIP area inside, just the still-elaborate eaves of an 86-year-old building now crumbling away on a decidedly gritty stretch of Melrose Avenue. The band gave away “free drinks and cotton candy” before the show even began. It was, in short, an anti-industry affair in all conceivable ways, and Arcade Fire savored every second of it. As the strains of Julie Andrews’ “Lusty Month of May” crackled over the speakers, the Canadian band’s members took to the tiny stage, grinned and then, appropriately enough, blasted headlong into “Month of May,” from their Grammy-nominated The Suburbs, with frontman Win Butler cocking his head and jutting his guitar out into the crowd — who, being so close, gladly reached out and grabbed it. Given that they were playing at full strength — eight in all, sawing and hammering away on a menagerie of violins and keyboards and drums and guitars — and that, for much of the past decade, they’ve been tailoring their sonics to massive festival crowds and cavernous indoor spaces, the sound they produced in this little theater was enormous; it washed over the audience, all the way to the back of the building, and then up to the arched ceilings. And that only added to the euphoria. Because there truly is something to be said about seeing a band this big in a venue this small. Already-massive songs like “Rebellion (Lies)” and “Neighborhood #2 (Laika)” became even larger, the bass rumbled and the strings stabbed, the chanted vocals of R

Ashlee Simpson And Pete Wentz: Details Behind The Divorce

Insiders say the couple have ‘just grown apart.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz in 2008 Photo: Gustavo Caballero/Getty Images Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz’s split may seem shocking to fans, but insiders close to the pair say there’s little drama behind the scenes. According to People, sources close to Simpson and Wentz have said the pop star and Fall Out Boy rocker aren’t mixing any emotional theatrics into their impending divorce. One person connected to the situation said the pair are riding out the breakup peacefully. Check out photos of the ex-couple throughout the years. “It’s very amicable. They’re on very friendly terms and speaking — it’s fine,” an insider said. “They’ve just grown apart. They’ve been growing apart for quite some time.” The source added that parenting their toddler remains their top priority. “It’s all about [their 2-year-old son] Bronx for them. They’re fantastic parents — Pete says she’s a great mom, and she says he’s a great father,” the insider said. “It’s about Bronx’s care and well-being and happiness for them.” Insiders have also echoed the “growing apart” reasoning to TMZ, adding that their respective careers — Simpson has largely eschewed the spotlight since 2008’s Bittersweet World, while Wentz has dabbled in fashion and piloted other musical projects — wedged them apart. “After Bronx was born, Ashlee made a conscious decision to get out of the business, but Pete’s heart was in music so he kept touring and that became a big issue in their relationship.” While insiders have maintained the split is drama-free, TMZ reports that Simpson left due to Wentz’s antics. “It’s really all about Pete’s erratic behavior,” the source said. “She really wanted out.” Publicly, the couple have been big on e-affection, gushing about each other on Twitter as recently as two days ago. “Dont forget 2 notice-when i look into the lil dudes eyes & smile, the way he loves. i realize @ashsimpsonwentz is a good moma + so much more,” Wentz tweeted Monday. Just last month Simpson doled out a sweet missive to her husband. “@petewentz I already miss your handsome face!” she wrote on January 19. “Bikini Girl” aka Katrina Darrell Returns With No Bikini

Am I the only one who remembers ‘Bikini Girl’ aka Katrina Darrell ? How could anyone forget that tight body? Well she’s back and looking, wait, why would someone with a nick name like ‘Bikini Girl’ do anything in the public eye without wearing a damn bikini? No wonder she’s been out of the spotlight for so long. What a waste. She kind of reminds me of this slut my friend used to date. I hated that chick. At least she’s wearing a nice little dress that shows off the goods so it’s not that bad. I also have a video of hers that has to be one of the worst covers of a song I’ve ever heard in my life. Check it out HERE , it’s awful.

Darn You, Kim and Khloe Kardashian!

Kim and Khloe Kardashian have given us many reasons to dislike them: The talentless sisters hawk any product that comes their way, will not shut up about their weight and seem to truly believe they contribute something to society. But now they’ve really crossed a line! In the following commercial for “Never Say Never,” the siblings hype Justin Bieber’s new movie, and are then asked out by the singer himself! He offers to take them to see the film and, let’s be frank, we all know what happens on dates inside a dark theater. Those darn Kardashians… Never Say Never Commercial (Featuring Kim and Khloe Kardashian) This isn’t the first time Justin and Kim have shared the spotlight, of course. The pair flirted up a storm in an Elle magazine spread last August. This also isn’t the first time Justin has relied on his famous friends to help promote his biopic. But when Pauly D and The Situation provided a hand, it was hilarious, not nauseating.
