Ke$ha Reflects On ‘Really Intense’ Breakout Year

Billboard cover girl is the magazine’s Hot 100 Artist of the Year. By James Dinh Ke$ha on the cover of the December issue of Billboard Photo: Billboard She was overlooked by the Grammys, but Ke$ha dominated radio and the charts in 2010 with her Auto-Tuned electro-pop and a distinctive “garbage chic” style that had everybody talking. In the latest issue of Billboard, the party-girl pop star opens up about her whirlwind rise to the top, saying she has no regrets about her breakthrough year. “Are you kidding me? I pretty much feel like I’ve been reborn into this completely different existence,” the singer told the magazine when asked how life had changed for her. “My entire life has become making music and playing shows, and I love it. I’ve accepted the fact that my fans are now my family, and I won’t be having boyfriends. I’ll just be having a really amazing relationship with the radio.” The pop star said that although she “wasn’t clueless” about what fame might bring, it far exceeded her expectations. “It’s just not at all what I expected it to be like,” she said. “It’s really intense, more intense than I ever thought it would be.” Recalling paparazzi chasing her as she made her arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, Ke$ha said, “I was having an anxiety attack, like, ‘I just wrote some pop songs, man!’ ” Ke$ha, who graces the mag’s cover wearing a crown as she pops a bottle of champagne, also talked about her big debut single, saying, “Sometimes I need to remind myself that ‘Tik Tok’ only went to #1 in January, because it kind of feels like it was 17 years ago.” The mag went on to ask if “Tik Tok” was the best way to introduced herself to the public. “I don’t know. We didn’t really know which song to come out with first,” Ke$ha said. “It was kind of a debate, because I didn’t initially come out as a rapper; I’ve always been a singer. So having my first single classified as kind of a rap song felt bizarre to me. But now it’s become something of a trademark, and it’s becoming more legitimate. I’ve talked to some of my favorite rap artists over the past year — artists who are idols — and they’ve given me mad props.” What was your favorite Ke$ha moment of 2010? Tell us in the comments! Usher’s ‘OMG’ ‘ Kills It Every Night,’ Says Tourmate Miguel

‘There’s so much anticipation for this song when he comes out,’ Miguel says of MTV News’ Song of the Year. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Usher Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images MTV News just named Usher’s “OMG” the #1 song of 2010 , and clearly we’re not alone in our admiration. But what is it like to watch it performed night after night? Miguel, who is currently opening for Usher’s OMG tour gave us a little insight. “There’s so much anticipation for this song when he comes out, and he really gives the fans what they want,” Miguel laughs. “He kills it every night.” Before his latest string of hits, Usher was out of the spotlight for a period of time in 2009, when he was dealing with personal issues including a divorce. Miguel finds his 2010 comeback inspiring. “There was a period of time, when a lot of people didn’t believe in Usher and thought he was finished … just kind of going to ride off into the sunset and disappear,” the up-and-coming singer noted. With the release of Raymond vs. Raymond and the follow-up EP, Versus, in 2010, Usher proved the skeptics wrong with chart-toppers including “OMG” and “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love.” “He’s such a tremendous example of perseverance and determination,” Miguel beamed. “I was there throughout this album, so I’ve seen the adversity that he’s had to overcome perception-wise.” MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 have all been counted down. But the fun isn’t over yet: We still want to see your picks in the comments below! Related Photos MTV News’ Top 25 Songs Of 2010 Related Artists Usher Miguel

T.I.’s No Mercy: An Album Guide

Released as he serves an 11-month prison bid, Tip confronts his demons on introspective new LP. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage When T.I. announced after his release from prison earlier this year that his next album would be titled King Uncaged, the Atlanta rapper explained that the project would touch on his time behind bars but also hark back to the themes of his earlier material, which leaned heavily on street narratives. However, when he was arrested again in October — and subsequently sentenced to 11 months in prison — Tip reconfigured the album, including a title change. No Mercy arrived in stores and online on Tuesday (December 7). If the LP’s new name doesn’t convey the sentiment of the project, the content certainly does. Throughout No Mercy, T.I. is equal parts repentant about his mistakes but also fiery as he attacks his detractors, accusing them of turning their backs on him during hard times that have included two jail stints in less than 12 months’ time. “No Mercy” On the title track featuring The-Dream, Tip strikes a good balance, looking in the mirror while also turning it around on those who can’t see past his success, where he says he’s actually battling demons. “There’s no mercy for me, no crying myself to sleep,” The-Dream sings in his airy falsetto. “No mercy for me/ Nightmares have become my dreams.” “His wife and sons and daughter know that every day he tried to be a better person,” Tip raps over the measured production. “All they want is better verses/ To market to the merchants/ But when it’s closed curtains …” “Get Back Up” The theme of clemency continues on “Get Back Up” featuring Chris Brown . The sprightly number is loaded with rhymes that lash out against the media and blogs, among others, but the lyrics are conveyed in melodic tones, hushing the vitriol. The Atlanta MC, though, also shows signs of accepting responsibility for his faults, behavior that he carried over from his days in the trap: “I admit, yeah, I done some dumb sh–,” he raps in the song. “Disappointed everybody, I know/ Try not to hold that against me, though/ My road to redemption has no GPS/ So guess time must be invested for this to be manifested/ Yes, it’s hard living life in the spotlight/ Trying to dodge the haters the same time as the cop light/ The Bible says let he without sin cast the stone first/ The sinners are the ones that judge him, who was wrong first?” “Welcome to This World” No Mercy isn’t all gloom. T.I. is still an exceptional MC, and he holds his own lyrically with a list of guests that would excite a five-star hotel manager. On the brooding “Welcome to This World,” featuring Kanye West and Kid Cudi, Tip and ‘Ye trade boastful verses about the high-life. “She coming home with me, she finnin’ meet her doom,” Tip spits. “She ain’t saying I’m the greatest, finnin’ to change her tune/ The coldest and the hottest, call me December and June/ Deliver euphoria straight to your room.” “All She Wrote” On “All She Wrote,” Tip and Eminem swap bars about spending time with the wrong woman. “Poppin’ Bottles ” After jumping on Drake’s breakout 2010 track “Fancy,” the Toronto MC reunites with Tip for “Poppin’ Bottles,” a woozy strip-club anthem. “Amazing” And “Amazing” is a bottom-heavy banger, courtesy of the Neptunes, that also finds Tip setting aside the album’s weightier themes. But the best work on No Mercy stems from Tip dealing with adversity . The rapper admitted to a pill addiction in a Vibe magazine cover story and recently penned a blog on his personal website confessing that he’s “sick and tired” of being in and out of prison “Castle Walls” He teams with Christina Aguilera for the deeply personal “Castle Walls.” It’s here that Tip confronts the consequences of his actions; a captivating documentation of this chapter in his life. “Honestly, to me, I think I lose every benefit/ Of all that I’ve accomplished if my kids never win at sh–,” he raps. “Me knowing this, why should the verse I laid/ Be more important to me than the persons I raised? “I guess I’m saying that to say that opportunity today,” Tip continues. “Don’t equate to all the time it takes away from your kids.” What do you think of T.I.’s No Mercy ? Kim Zolciak: Engaged to Kroy Biermann!

On last night’s edition of The Real Housewives of Atlanta , NeNe Leakes inched very close to a divorce. Her castmate, meanwhile, has gone in the opposite direction. Sources close to Kim Zolciak tell Radar Online this reality star is engaged to NFL lineman Kroy Biermann. Last week, the pair revealed its expecting a child in a few months. Kroy Biermann’s 2010 stats: 28 tackles, one sack and one fiancee. “They are both really happy about both the baby and their engagement and cannot wait to start their new lives together,” an insider said . “Kroy proposed to her and bought her a substantial ring, which she has shown to a few friends, although she is not wearing it in public yet.” Kim and Kroy are in negotiations for a spin-off show, Kendra and Hank Baskett-style. If the spin-off doesn’t go down, friends say Kim wants some leverage with Bravo when discussing a new Real Housewives of Atlanta contract, something an impending wedding and baby would provide. Yes, she’s using these major life milestones as negotiating tactics. “The other cast members are publicly backing Kim and Kroy, but privately there are some jealousies because Kim is very much in the spotlight right now and not everyone is happy about that,” concluded the source.

Simon Cowell Weighs In On ‘American Idol’ Judge Steven Tyler

‘I always said it had to be someone who wasn’t better looking than me, and they achieved it,’ former ‘Idol’ judge quips. By Eric Ditzian Steven Tyler Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage.com Courtesy of “The View,” we’ve already checked out a sneak peek of the dynamic between the new gaggle of “American Idol” judges: Randy Jackson has shifted into a “Yo!”-spouting elder statesman, Steven Tyler is the F-bomb-dropping wildcard and Jennifer Lopez has refashioned herself as the sweet-smiling voice of the reason. What does ex-“Idol” judge Simon Cowell think of all this? If Tyler and his outsized personality are meant to fill the vacuum left by Cowell and his acerbic commentary, the British reality star is fine with that. “I always said it had to be someone who wasn’t better looking than me, and they achieved it,” Cowell said before the Founders Awards at the International Emmy Awards in New York, according to The Associated Press . The AP reports that Cowell pronounced himself happy that Tyler won the “Idol” judging job and that Jackson says they’re all having fun on the show. The Aerosmith frontman certainly seems to be enjoying himself, saying in September, “Some of the kids are so young that I’m not sure if they can get how long it’s taken me to be successful. They were all on fire. They were spunky and crazy and over the top.” While Cowell takes a step back from the spotlight and preps the American version of “The X-Factor” for Fox (set to debut in the fall of 2011), he doled out one piece of advice to Tyler. “[I]t’s a fun job,” he said. “You’ve got to take it like that. You can’t take it too seriously.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Geraldo ‘much more open minded’ about 9/11 thanks to NYC television ads

! By Stephen C. Webster Sunday, November 14th, 2010 — 7:15 pm A new television ad campaign featuring the family members of 9/11 victims has succeeded in garnering what 9/11 activists have lacked for years: serious treatment in the mainstream media. Granted, that media was Fox News host Geraldo Rivera, who in a former iteration ran a Jerry Springer-like daytime talk show. That and, the last time Rupert Murdoch's conservative-tilted television channel seriously talked about issues pertaining to 9/11, they were calling for a public official's resignation over a signature on one of the “9/11 truth” petitions. Still, at the end of his serious-yet-brief treatment of questions surrounding the collapse of World Trade Center 7 (WTC 7, pictured), Rivera admitted that the activists had made him “much more open minded” about questions surrounding 9/11. Rivera spoke in response to an ad playing in 30-second bytes on screens all around New York City, which does not focus on conspiracy theories. It does not feature hip-hop beats in the background or winded, red-faced protesters dressed in black shouting at reporters. It doesn't even mention President George W. Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney or the systemic failures in America's air defenses. Instead, it puts the spotlight on people who lost family members in the 2001 attacks. Patriotic background music plays as viewers are gently reminded that not two, but three buildings collapsed on 9/11. “Although the official explanation is that fire brought down building seven, over 1,200 architects and engineers have looked into the evidence and believe there's more to the story,” they say. Then they implore viewers to help them seek justice, for their families, simply by visiting a web site: buildingwhat.org. Their campaign's name, “Building What?” was allegedly taken from the response offered by New York Supreme Court Justice Edward H. Lehner, when asked if he knew about WTC 7. “Up until now, only those considered nutjobs questioned the official conclusion, that office fires caused by the nearby catastrophe of the towers collapsing brought down building number seven,” Geraldo said before introducing his guests. Cue a clip of Rosie O'Donnell. “If explosives were involved,” he continued, “that would mean the most obnoxious protesters in recent years … were right.” Geraldo called the new television ad “not so easy to dismiss as those demonstrators were.” The ad is being sponsored by donations to the groups New York City Coalition for Accountability Now (NYC CAN), Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth (AE911) and others. They're calling for the New York City council to launch an investigation into the collapse of building seven. NYC CAN, a nonpartisan association of over 100 9/11 family members, is the same group behind a 2009 ballot initiative requesting a new 9/11 investigation. It secured more than enough support to qualify for the ballot but the city ultimately blocked it from going before the voters, citing improperly collected signatures. At time of this writing, AE911 said it had among its members, “1,346 verified architectural and engineering professionals who have put their professional reputations on the line to publicly voice their disagreement with NIST’s findings.” One of Geraldo's guests, Bob McIlvaine, whose son was killed on 9/11, also appeared in a longer, web-exclusive ad released in March after the delivery of a petition and information packets to members of the New York City council. “What caught my eye,” Rivera explained, “was their claim that 1,300 architects and engineers examined the evidence about building seven's collapse and disagree with the official report by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).” NIST's report, released years after the 9/11 Commission Report, argued that the “new phenomenon” of thermal expansion could bring down a steel frame structure. The scientists added that their findings made them worry numerous other structures could be prone to the same style of collapse. In spite of their conclusions, only three skyscrapers are known to have officially collapsed from hydrocarbon fires weakening steel supports, and all of them fell on Sept. 11, 2001. Oddly enough, that same day the BBC reported that building seven had fallen some 23 minutes before it went down and featured a reporter speaking about the third dose of tragedy even as the tower remained standing behind her. Discovery of the mistaken and ill-timed reportage has since fueled talk of an international conspiracy, but the network insists it was simply mistaken and has adamantly denied allegations that it received advance notice of the collapse. “Building seven came down, went into a sudden collapse across the full width and length of the building, for 2.25 seconds, which amounted to 105 feet or eight stories, eight 13-foot-tall stories — it was in full free-fall acceleration, ” explained Tony Szamboti, a mechanical engineer who appeared on Fox News with McIlvaine. “That is impossible because, in a natural collapse, columns would have to buckle,” he said. “When columns buckle, there is a minimum resistance. … It would slow down.” “What are you suggesting brought it down?” Geraldo asked. “I'm suggesting there was some form of demolition devices in that building,” he replied. “… I'm not saying I know what it is. I'm saying that it was at freefall acceleration and the NIST admitted to that.” Geraldo agreed that it looked like a structure “being demolished by the professionals who can actually collapse a building right into its own footprint”. “Why do you think they're lying about it?” he asked, inviting his guest to speculate. Szamboti didn't take the bait. “I don't really know all the details of why they're lying about it,” he said, affirming his position without dipping into the conspiratorial nature of the various 9/11 theories. “I can't read their minds. All I can say is, scientifically, it's impossible for fire to have done what we say.” Geraldo said the new NYC CAN campaign and the serious individuals behind it had made him “much more open minded” about 9/11 activism. This video was broadcast by Fox News on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010. added by: treewolf39

Jeremih Says 50 Cent ‘Came Through’ On ‘Down On Me’

R&B singer talks to MTV News about his next possible single. By Jayson Rodriguez Jeremih Photo: MTV News Jeremih was a lonely crooner on his self-titled debut album. For his follow-up, however, the Chicago singer recruited Ludacris for the first single “I Like.” And for “Down on Me,” likely the next single from his new album All About You, Jeremih worked with 50 Cent. Jeremih said he wasn’t trying to hog the spotlight on his first project. “My first album had no features at all,” Jeremih told MTV News. “It was an unintentional thing. Me and Mick [Schultz, his producer] were the only people in the studio, so that’s just how it happened. … So for this album I definitely wanted to collaborate, get in tune with some of the artists, even on Def Jam, ’cause we have the greatest on our label. Luda came through on ‘I Like.’ 50 Cent came through on ‘Down on Me,’ which is a contestant to being my second single.” The pair never met during the recording process, but they finally came face-to-face a few weeks later when Jeremih ventured to the G-Unit offices and played his entire album for 50 Cent. “Thugs and gangsters listening to R&B, and I think they were digging it, genuinely, so it was pretty dope,” Jeremih said. On Wednesday (September 29), 50 also added his vocals to Jeremih’s track “Waiter/ The 5 Senses.” “I’m a 50 Cent fan, even from his G-Unit when he first came out with Get Rich or Die Tryin’ to movies and films and even the little short films he do with his CDs,” Jeremih said. “I think he’s dope.” What other artists would you like to see Jeremih collaborate with next? Kanye West Debuts New Song At VMAs

MC toasts ‘scumbags’ and ‘douche bags’ in new song from forthcoming album. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kanye West performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage As MTV Video Music Awards host Chelsea Handler put it, Kanye West was the “big, black elephant in the room” at this year’s show. Following a long and well-documented history of awards-show rants, Kanye’s return to the VMAs was a much-buzzed-about event. And West knew it. Instead of completely avoiding the controversy of last year’s VMAs, Yeezy turned the event into fodder for his new track, which he debuted at the close of the show. Funnyman Aziz Ansari sent up the “I’mma let you finish” debacle by yukking it up on a phone call from “Jersey Shore” castmember Ronnie but tossing to West’s performance. The MC walked to the middle of the stage alone, sporting a fire-engine-red suit and gold chains, to a white MPC on a pedestal. West then punched out a few notes from his new song , the companion film for which viewers got a peek at during the pre-show, in the center of the black-and-white stage. A trio of dancers dashed onstage carrying beige scarves before West picked up the mic and began to spit. “I always find something wrong/ You been putting up with my sh– way too long,” the MC rhymed, presumably referring to his various headline-hogging outbursts. “I’m so gifted at finding what I don’t like the most.” Then ‘Ye, who has weathered an outsize amount of criticism, dedicated the performance to his mother and let loose. “Let’s have a toast for the douchebags/ Let’s have a toast for the a–holes/ Let’s have a toast for scumbags,” West sang. The MC then dished out advice to listeners who may be dealing with the aforementioned “bags.” “I got a plan/ Run away as fast as you can.” West collaborator and Clipse MC Pusha T then hit the stage, channeling “Miami Vice”-cool in a mauve blazer as the trio of dancers posed on the side. “I’m just young, rich and tasteless,” Push spit. For many, the performance can be seen as major turning point in ‘Ye’s career. The producer and lyricist has spent the past year grappling with the downward turn of his public persona and retreated from the spotlight. Yeezy returned with the epic track “Power,” got back into the awards-show game at the link BET Awards and previewed new music for tech tastemakers in intimate workplace performances. And of course, he joined Twitter, typing out an entertaining and candid stream of missives, including an apology to Taylor Swift ( Swift, for her part, also referenced the mic-grabbing business in her own VMA performance). After rhyming the chorus once again, switching up his vocals with a reverb effect, West closed the performance on a triumphant note. The crowd chanted “Kanye!” as a curtain of pyro rained down onto the stage. What did you think of Kanye West’s VMA performance? Sound off in the comments below!
