Justin Bieber Says He’s ‘Crazy’ And ‘Nuts’

Bieber opens up about his personal life and the trials of pop superstardom in a new Vanity Fair cover story. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber on February 2011 cover of Vanity Fair Photo: Art Streiber / Conde Nast When Vanity Fair got hold of Justin Bieber for their February cover story , the boy wonder admitted that there’s a lot going on in that well-coifed head of his. “I’m crazy, I’m nuts,” the teen pop sensation declares, while suggesting that might not be such a bad thing for someone in his line of work. “Just the way my brain works. I’m not normal. I think differently — my mind is always racing,” he says in the issue, which hits newsstands everywhere January 11. “I’m just … nuts. But I think the best [musicians] probably are.” Bieber also talks about his hectic life in the spotlight. “It’s hard to really balance myself. A regular kid, if he catches the flu, he just gets to go home,” the young singer explains. “But I can’t do that … Everything is important. But, you know, my sanity is important, too. Even if I’m angry, I’ll just put a smile on my face and fake it. I don’t often fake it — what’s me is me … I know I have to give up a lot of myself, or a lot of a private life.” Still, Bieber reveals that he does have someone who helps to ensure that he gets to have some normal experiences. That guy is Kenny Hamilton, his bodyguard, who says, “I feel like I’ve become an expert at covert operations,” adding that he is the guy who makes sure that things go smoothly when the singer gets a day off. Aside from trying to find time for a personal life, Bieber also confesses that he wants to travel to space (something fellow pop star Lance Bass also dreamt about), hates reading — although he does own a copy of the Will Smith-approved “Rich Dad Poor Dad” — and has a hard time sleeping at night, but that could be attributed to his self-proclaimed racing mind. “I just turn over all night and think. My mind races,” he explains. “I think about all the things I didn’t have time to think about during the day — like family and God and things that should be more important but you don’t have time to think about, because you just get caught up [in everything else] during the day.” The Vanity Fair piece also includes a conversation with Bieber’s mom, Pattie Mallette, who shared that she thinks God put her and her son on Earth to bring light to the world. In addition, the magazine spoke with Usher, who describes the mop-topped singer as “the antithesis of Disney and Nickelodeon,” while adding, “You could immediately tell that this [was] a kid who has style — he’s a hip kid.” Bieber, now 16, is experiencing all his growing pains in the public eye and he knows that everyone is watching. “For younger guys, it’s like [they think] they’re not cool if they come to my concert. That’ll [change], I think; it’ll happen, maybe when I’m 18. But meanwhile, all their girlfriends are coming to watch me,” he says. “Of course, I think that people are just waiting for that time when I make a mistake and they’re gonna jump on it … There’s gonna be haters.” He adds that he intends to remain level-headed as his career progresses. “I know I’m not going to make a life-changing bad decision, as some people have,” he insists. “I’ve seen it happen too many times. I could be my own worst enemy, but I don’t want to mess this up.” Related Photos Justin Bieber Takes Over The Bodies Of Other Teen Idols Related Artists Justin Bieber

By Terri Schwartz Justin Bieber in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount Pictures The February 11 release of John Chu’s 3-D doc “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” is fast approaching, and in addition to the Biebs’ many tweets about the flick, we now have another glimpse at what it has in store for eager fans. A new clip from the film shows how Bieber’s talent for drums surfaced at a young age. It’s also full of more cute Bieber baby videos . “He never had any lessons or anything. I just never thought of it being anything other than for fun,” Bieber’s mother, Pattie Malette, says in the clip. Bieber’s drum collection quickly expanded from a handheld drum to a mini drum kit, and eventually, his family friends held a benefit concert and raised enough money to buy the young prodigy his own set of Pearl drums. The 16-year-old pop star made waves at the 2010 VMAs when he rocked out on the drums during his amplified set. He also showed off his skills on the skins at the 2009 Jingle Ball in Sacramento , where he played an impressive drum solo during Cobra Starship’s performance. Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, who had been trying to challenge Bieber to a dance off, tweeted after the fact, “Justin Bieber smoked me hard tonight. He couldn’t win the dance off. But he shredded a gnarly drum solo. I back this kid on the real. Legit.” Bieber wouldn’t be the first artist to start out behind the kit before his vocal capabilities propelled him to the spotlight. He joins the powerful ranks of drummers-turned-singers such as Dave Grohl, Phil Collins, Karen Carpenter, Ringo Starr and Tommy Lee. Flo Rida Cruises Into 2011 On ‘MTV New Year’s Bash’

Rapper rocks ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ and more hits during Times Square special. By Mawuse Ziegbe Flo Rida (file) Photo: Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images Flo Rida kicked off 2011 with not just a bang, but three of his biggest club bangers. The Southern MC took revelers on a hit-packed ride for “MTV New Year’s Bash” on Friday (December 31), kicking off his performance with the David Guetta-assisted smash “Club Can’t Handle Me.” Audience members went nuts when DJ Kronik dropped the booty-quivering thump of the club mainstay, and Flo, decked out in a gray pullover with a red Louis Vuitton scarf draped around his neck, crimson Nike kicks, red shades and a hefty Poe Boy chain, led the crowd with his supercharged energy. Hands shot in the air at Flo’s command, heralding the beefy rapper as he headed down the platform. But he didn’t confine the party to the stage, hopping in the crowd to fist-pump alongside fans and even let a couple partyers wail the chorus into his mic. Flo also hit the stage to rock his latest single, “Who Dat Girl.” Despite the frosty NYC weather outside, the Miami spitter kept the heat going indoors, ditching the sweater in favor of a white tank that showed off his trademark guns. Flo then switched to his 2009 dance-floor filler “Right Round” and pulled an amped fan in a snug animal-print dress onstage to groove alongside him. Both rocked out on the platform in the center of the audience, and Flo capped off his lucky fan’s moment in the spotlight by letting her wear his massive chain. MTV News caught up with Flo after getting the party started in Times Square, and the hitmaker dished about the secrets to making a surefire club jam. “To make a club hit, it’s gotta be like ear candy. I think the production has to stand out from all the songs that are out [and] have a great melody,” said Flo, whose tracks like “Right Round” and “Low” have shattered records. “People catch on to a melodic sound faster than anything, not just here in the States, just around the world.” He also added that in addition to the beat, a party-starting record has to have what he dubbed “club lyricism”: lyrics so catchy that anybody at a Flo show could “sing every word and you just hold the microphone out.” With a time-tested formula for crafting smashes already in his hitmaking arsenal, and new 2011 projects from touring to pushing his own new artists, Flo said his New Year’s resolution is all about spreading the wealth. “[I plan] to continue to give,” he said. “I feel like the more you give, the more you receive. It’s just a great feeling to give and not to borrow.” What did you think of Flo Rida’s performance at the “MTV New Year’s Eve Bash?” Let us know in the comments.

Rachel Moran Presents: The Miley Cyrus Bong Song!

There are many ways for aspiring singers to get noticed. For Michaela Wallace, it was pretending to be Justin Bieber’s girlfriend . For Rachel Moran, it’s mocking the fact that Miley Cyrus was caught on video smoking out of a bong . In a new single aptly titled “The Miley Cyrus Bong Song,” Moran actually films herself at the same club where Miley got herself high and loopy. She parodies the scandal by crooning: “It looks like Liam or am I seeing things? And you say he’s your boyfriend, but I’m pretty sure he’s not anymore.” Rachael Moran Bong Parody On her website, Moran writes: “I, Rachael Moran, am more than your average singer. In LA of all places people are here to fend for themselves. It is my mission as a young artist (18 years old) to not only catapult myself into the spotlight, but to bring others up with me.” And brings others down, it seems. What do you make of this video? A fun way for Moran to make headlines? Or a mean way for her to exploit a troubled fellow teen?

Lil Wayne Thanks Fans With Preview Of Rolling Stone Shoot

‘Thank you for making ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ #1 on iTunes,’ Weezy writes. By Paul Cantor Lil Wayne in Rolling Stone Photo: DJ Scoob Doo On the heels of his performance alongside Eminem on “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend, Lil Wayne took to his blog WeezyThanxYou.com to express appreciation to his fans as well as offer a glimpse of a recent shoot he did for his upcoming Rolling Stone cover story. “The shoot was in Miami two weeks ago, and just being able to do this type of stuff again is therapeutic,” he wrote. “Be sure to pick up the issue when it hits stands. Thank you to the people at Rolling Stone for the opportunity.” The behind the scenes photo was taken by DJ Scoob Doo and shows Wayne standing shirtless in a photo studio with a pair of fluorescent sun glasses on, presumably looking at the Rolling Stone photographer’s lens. Wayne also thanked fans for supporting the first single from Tha Carter IV “6 Foot 7 Foot.” The song, which samples elements of Jamaican folk song “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” rocketed up the iTunes charts and landed at #1 in less than a week. “Thank you for making ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ #1 on iTunes,” he wrote, “you will continue to be #1 in my heart.” Wayne is just starting to reemerge in public after being released from prison in early November. His appearance on “SNL” was his first televised appearance since then. On the show, he performed Eminem’s single “No Love,” from Recovery. Em ceded the spotlight after performing “Won’t Back Down,” and Wayne went into an electric-guitar-laden take of “6 Foot 7 Foot.” Of the highly anticipated performance, DJ Scoob Doo said, “The energy in the building is historical, and it’s extra special to see everybody fight for position backstage to see Lil Wayne take over ‘SNL.’ ” Related Artists Lil Wayne

Waka Flocka Flame Speaks On Home Raid

‘Why would I rap and go try to street gang bang? That’s hustling backwards,’ rapper says in radio interview. By Mawuse Ziegbe Waka Flocka Flame Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage Waka Flocka Flame is focused on one career, and it doesn’t involve being a street hustler. The Atlanta rapper’s home was raided by police on Thursday for an investigation reportedly related to weapons, drugs and prostitution. The MC’s mother and manager, Deb Antney, has denied to MTV News that prostitution was a factor in the raid, and on Saturday, Waka batted away allegations that he is involved in any type of illegal activity. During a sit-down with radio station Hot 93.7 in Hartford, Connecticut, the “O Let’s Do It” rapper, who wasn’t at home at the time of the raid, described how he learned his place had been busted by authorities. “I had to go to court for a little traffic ticket for driving too fast. I was coming out the court, I had to use the bathroom. So my road manager G-Boy, he’s like, ‘Ay, man, police just raided the house.’ I’m like, ‘What? What they want? They want to find some CDs? What they comin’ in there for?’ ” he said. The rapper denied he was involved in any shady dealings, maintaining he has no plans to juggle life in the streets and the spotlight. “Why would I rap and go try to street gang bang? That’s hustling backwards. Why would I wanna rap all around the world and then go hit the streets and gang bang? I’m a rapper, I’m not a [gang-banger.] How can you gang bang and be a rapper? I don’t understand that,” he said. “I would love to find out where their information is coming from. I can’t wait.” He also swatted away Web rumors that one of his associates, who reportedly appeared in a video that was making the rounds in the blogosphere, tipped off police. “That ain’t true. Hey, this is the internet. I don’t know what’s going on, I didn’t even see [the video], keep it gangsta,” Waka said. The MTV News “Hottest MCs” pick pointed to the breakout success of the past year as one of the main reasons he plans to keep his business out of the streets. “I’m good. I dropped the album, Flockaveli, doing numbers. ‘No Hands,’ I think it’s platinum or it’s on the road to be. I’m in the top three albums of the year, ’cause I don’t know nobody selling past me and Gucci and probably Wayne or Nicki and West or somebody or Ross. Other than that, these folks is losing out here,” he said. “I’m good, I got shows every week. I’m straight. Team good, I’m eatin’. New label, Brick Squad Monopoly, Gucc about to drop two mixtapes, I just executive produced one of them. I’m going in, man.” Related Artists Waka Flocka Flame

Captain Beefheart Dead At 69

Avant-garde musician and visual artist battled multiple sclerosis since the ’90s. By James Montgomery “Captain Beefheart” Don Van Vliet Photo: Gijsbert Hanekroot/Redferns Don Van Vliet, the man known around the world as Captain Beefheart, died Friday (December 17), according to his manager . He was 69. The cause of Van Vliet’s death was not immediately known, though several outlets were reporting it was due to complications from multiple sclerosis, which he had battled since the 1990s. Van Vliet was an accomplished avant-garde musician and visual artist, who along with a constantly rotating crew of fellow oddballs — his handpicked “Magic Band” — bent the rules, melded genres and thoroughly weirded out much of mainstream America for nearly four decades. The origin of his famous Captain Beefheart stage name remains somewhat cloudy (some say it came from a script he wrote with childhood friend/ rival Frank Zappa), but the impact it would have on the worlds of music and art is not. Beginning in 1967, with the release of Beefheart and the Magic Band’s seminal Safe as Milk, and rolling on through other classic bizarre gems like 1969’s Trout Mask Replica (which melded elements of blues, jazz and avant-garde spoken word and was named by Rolling Stone as the 58th Greatest Album of All Time in 2003), ’72’s bar-friendly Clear Spot and ’78’s Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller), Beefheart forged a territory that was uniquely, unquestionably his — record sales (and the mainstream media) be damned. In the process, he earned a legion of loyal followers — including Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, the White Stripes’ Jack White (who, along with his band the Dead Weather, filmed their “Treat Me Like Your Mother” video near Van Vliet’s childhood home in Lancaster, California) and “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening — and, along with a handful of other acts, is credited with ushering in the genre we now commonly refer to as “alternative rock.” After releasing Ice Cream for Crow in 1982, Van Vliet all but retired from the music industry (though the Magic Band would continue on without him), focusing instead on his other passion: painting. He would spend the remainder of his days living in Northern California with his wife, Jan, creating abstract, expressionist works, which showed often at New York’s Michael Werner Gallery. By the 1990s, he had largely disappeared from the public eye, save for a few appearances, most prominently in Anton Corbijn’s film “Some Yo Yo Stuff,” where he appeared to be frail and weakened. In a statement released to Rolling Stone, the Michael Werner Gallery called Van Vliet “a complex and influential figure in the visual and performing arts” and added that his music and art will live on as his lasting legacy. “After two decades in the spotlight as an avant-garde composer and performer, Van Vliet retired from performing to devote himself wholeheartedly to painting and drawing,” the statement read, in part. “Like his music, Van Vliet’s lush paintings are the product of a truly rare and unique vision.” Share your well-wishes for Van Vliet’s family in the comments.
