Lauryn Hill Is ‘Starting To Get Excited’ About Performing Again

‘I think it’s just time,’ Hill tells NPR about her possible return. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lauryn Hill Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ Getty Images Lauryn Hill made a huge impact on the music scene when she broke out from the Fugees and went solo with her acclaimed 1998 debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Already a bona fide star with the New Jersey hip-hop trio, the husky-voiced rapper and singer launched into the pop culture stratosphere with Miseducation, which soared to the top of the charts. The album went on to score a record-setting five Grammy Awards , and Hill became one of the biggest artists in the world. Then, she basically vanished. She released MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 in 2002 , and the music world waited for Fugees reunion that never fully materialized. Aside from popping up on an occasional festival date or worrying fans with an eccentric performance , Hill was largely gone from the spotlight. The singer recently opened up to NPR about why she stopped releasing music, blaming both personal issues and her feelings about the music industry. “There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it,” Hill told NPR News.

Vanessa Hudgens Has Also Grown Up

Miley Cyrus isn’t the only young actress making a point of telling the world that she’s all grown up. She’s just the only one who feels the need to do so by simulating a same-sex kiss with a back-up dancer. Vanessa Hudgens, conversely, is giving interviews to magazines in which she talks about taking on more mature film roles (such as the daughter of a drug addict in next year’s Beastly ) and admits that she actually dislikes life in the spotlight. Here are a few excerpts of such a discussion with the new issue of Glamour : On pressure to be a role model : When I am around kids and they come up to me, of course I am going to act a certain way, but at the end of the day, I’m doing this for myself. I’m going to be doing movies kids can’t watch. On attending public events : I can’t breathe, and I get claustrophobic. It’s a very odd business. I do it because I love acting, but I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to it. On bonding with boyfriend Zac Efron : Right off the bat, we had a connection. I think everybody could see it. When we had our audition, they paired us together. And he was adorable. On her nude photos scandal : I think that it has made me stronger. But it still hurts. It sucks because [the photos were] supposed to be private, but at the same time a lot of actresses do it [in movies]. Eventually, I’m sure that I will. But I don’t know if I would be able to do it now. Has she grown up too fast? Maybe. And maybe that’s the reason why I am silly at 21. But I don’t regret it. And if I wasn’t how I was when I was younger, I wouldn’t be how I am today. You know? And I love the way I am today. On her love of denim : A, it goes with anything. And, B, if your jeans hug you the right way, you feel like a sexpot. [Laughs.] And they get better with age!

Bun B On Michael Jackson: ‘Let That Man Rest In Peace’

‘I just wish that people would leave well enough alone,’ ex-UGK MC says. By Shaheem Reid Bun B Photo: MTV News Friday marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Michael Jackson , and as fans reflect on his life and musical legacy, Bun B says we should preserve his memory by remembering what a remarkable entertainer he was, rather than all that other stuff. “I just wish that people would leave well enough alone,” Bun said. “It’s still a lot of mess surrounding [his death], it’s a lot of people that are willing to entertain people who are looking for mess. I’m not going to name names, ’cause everybody deals with grief differently. I think they should leave well enough alone. If they want to have one thing a year for Mike, that’s fine — of course, however they choose to honor him [privately is fine]. But I think they just need to let the fans do their thing [in celebrating]. Let that man rest in peace.” Bun also feels that Michael’s three children should be kept out of the spotlight. “I think they should definitely pull the kids back,” he said. “Take his children and pull them back. Dude ain’t never want that for his kids. I think that for a life of being misunderstood, and [having]miscommunications and not discussing a lot of what was going on with himself, I think the one thing we could all draw from him was that he didn’t want anybody bothering his children. He didn’t want them to deal with the type of craziness and madness that comes with being in this industry. Unfortunately, it looks like some people want to pull them in this mess for money, which is unfortunate because the estate of Michael Jackson isn’t hurting for no money. A lot of people should leave well enough alone.” Related Videos Remembering Michael Jackson – One Year Later Related Photos Michael Jackson: A Life In Photos Related Artists Bun B

M.I.A.: Don’t Believe The Hype, She’s Human After All

Everything you probably think about M.I.A. is wrong, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery M.I.A. Photo: Chris Weeks/ WireImage “Hi, I’m Maya.” That’s how M.I.A. — scourge of The New York Times, the U.S. Department of Immigration and oppressors the world over — introduces herself, and to be honest, it sort of catches me off guard. After all, she does not appear to be clutching a copy of “The Anarchist Cookbook,” or covered in blood and gunpowder, or espousing the virtues of violent secessionism. She does not scan the skyline for black helicopters, or check the planters on the New York City rooftop where we’ve met for listening devices, or even mention the C.I.A., not even in passing. She does not strike me as particularly dangerous, paranoid, or ill-informed. Basically, she is just very tiny, with dainty fingers and windswept black hair and the kind of eyes you could drown in. She is funny and swears a lot and, seems to be, for all intents and purposes, a very nice person. Or, to put it another way, everything you probably think about M.I.A. is wrong. Your opinion of her no doubt has a whole lot to do with things you’ve read about her over the past month , or the seemingly incongruous way she lives her life, or even the causes she’s chosen to align herself with. The blame, it would seem, can be equally distributed. That’s not really the point. What is the point is that, when I met her earlier this week — on a sunny NYC roof deck with fake grass beneath our feet and a nude sunbather off in the distance — she struck me less as a firebrand, or a revolutionary, or even a figurehead for this haywire century and more as an honest-to-goodness person, a complicated one, somewhat unwittingly thrust under the spotlight but determined to make the most of her time there. Of course, she could have just been on her best behavior, what with the lashing Lynn Hirschberg gave her in the Times still so fresh in her mind, but really, it was a revelation to me, and it should be for you too. Because for years, we’ve all been quick to deify M.I.A. (or, alternately, demonize her), hanging an unending stream of cultural signifiers — both good and bad — on her tiny shoulders, mainly based on the way she looks or her lineage or what she supposedly represents. I am just as guilty of this as the next guy: In 2007, I wrote that her song “Paper Planes” was “indicative of the shrinking world we inhabit [and] the culture-mashing power of the Internet.” This probably wasn’t fair to M.I.A., even though she didn’t exactly hide her multinational roots or her father’s ties to the Tamil Tiger military group at the time. The problem was, I took the easy route. I didn’t consider her a person first and foremost, choosing instead to assign a bunch of BS terms to her and her music. And the reason I bring this up is because, after spending the first part of her career practically inviting this kind of press, M.I.A. seems to have transitioned with her new album, ///Y/. Sure, there was the brutal video for “Born Free” and some of the stuff she said in Lynn Hirschberg’s New York Times piece was still rather, uh, eyebrow-raising, but in either of those instances, M.I.A. simply seemed to be trying to raise awareness of injustices around the world. For quite possibly the first time in her career, she appears to be less concerned with battling evils than she is with simply highlighting them. It’s what people in her position — and by that I mean globally famous — do in situations like this. Because, first and foremost, they are people just like you or me. And that’s all a longwinded way of saying that ///Y/ is not just M.I.A.’s most personal album; it’s her most human too. It’s her (rather dissonant) attempt to make sense of the world around her, or, as she put it on that NYC rooftop: “This is not some weird, crazy conspiracy theory. This is mainstream media. I wish I was talking about way more underground theories, but [I’m] not. This is just me digesting what I see in the mainstream.” So, to make M.I.A. any less than human these days — or to take her at anything less than face value — is to do a disservice to her and her art. It’s taking the easy way out. I used to think that she was some multi-hyphenated vessel, some pop deity who delighted in pressing buttons and pushing the envelope. Now, after meeting her, after watching her answer questions about why folks seem to dislike her so (“It’s because I fight the ones that fight me. I stand up for myself,” she smiled. “Everyone should.”), I just see her as another human being, someone trying to figure out the world and her place in it. She is bound to make mistakes along the way. Shoot, she already has, but she’s learned from them. And she’s unafraid to make even more going forward. And sure, there are still plenty of reasons you could hate her — she is opinionated, she is contradictory (you know, what with her millionaire boyfriend and home in tawny Brentwood, California, and all), she supposedly thrives on confrontation — but they’re all wholly human flaws, the same ones we all have. And you may not agree with everything she says, but it’s important that she says them, because someone’s got to. Despite everything you’ve read about her, and in direct opposition to whatever you may think, M.I.A. is not a demon. She’s not dangerous. She seems just like the rest of us. Albeit a little shorter. Vienna Girardi is a Stalker, Jake Pavelka is a Fame Whore: The Bachelor Stars’ Camps Trade Barbs

“Sometimes love just isn’t enough in a relationship.” – Jake Pavelka We don’t even have a joke for this moving quote, but The Bachelor star may be right. Especially if your fiancee is a nut job stalker, which he can attest to. Sources close to the couple say they weren’t too surprised to see Jake and Vienna break up , in large part because she didn’t give him a whole lot of space. “She was kind of stalkerish,” says a staffer who worked closely with Jake Pavelka on Dancing With the Stars . “She wanted to spend a lot of time with him.” “Everywhere he would go, she would go. Rehearsals, photo shoots, practice. She was the only significant other there sometimes … it was a little weird.” Another source says Vienna was pissed when Jake was cast on DWTS , saying she is “not a fan of reality TV” (LOL) or him being surrounded by women. A Bachelor staffer echoed the sentiment: “I don’t think anyone really expected [Jake and Vienna] to last. It seemed like more of an infatuation than love.” More specifically, Vienna went on the show because he was on it, and Jake was so smitten that he didn’t heed warnings from … well, the whole country. In any case, it all unraveled amid rumors of Vienna cheating with Gregory Michael, which she denies. Moreover, her stepmom calls Jake a fame whore. Oh yes. To hear her family tell it, Vienna Girardi was the one who out because of Jake’s undying love for the spotlight. NOTE : They met on reality TV . Her stepmom Lisa also says her relationship with Jake Pavelka ended last night around 6 p.m., and the breakup took place over the phone! Weak, J. Whose side are you on? Hold the phone, there’s plenty more from Vienna’s camp … According to her family, Vienna felt that Jake constantly abandoned her for photo shoots and other media events … instead of building a foundation. Every reality TV fairy tale needs one of those. Vienna adamantly denies ever cheating on Jake, despite earlier reports Jake was convinced she was “stepping out” on him with that dude from Greek . Girardi’s family wasn’t done either, with her family members telling TMZ that Jake is a total fraud who was only motivated by TV ratings and not love. Quoth the stepmom: “I don’t think [Jake] ever loved her … I think he picked her because she is a dramatic person and it was good for the ratings.” She also said that despite his public love-fests, “In real life, they never kissed, didn’t have a romantic relationship and he never said he loved her.” If that’s true, he is definitely the biggest fraud of all time. One thing is for sure, in any event – he won’t be holding on to any five-figure parting gifts. Vienna gave her engagement ring back to Jake when she moved out of his place this weekend, but that $50,000 rock will be headed back to ABC. Her stepmom says Vienna ditched Jake with a goodbye note … and the 3 carat Neil Lane diamond he used to pop the question on The Bachelor . Sources close to the show say Jake is required to give the ring back to the production company, and only keeps it if they end up getting married. Decent odds for the show … 13/14 total, and even Jason Mesnick probably had to buy his own for Molly Malaney after dumping Melissa Rycroft.

Devon James Demands Tiger Woods Paternity Test

DNA test be damned, porn star Devon James insists Tiger Woods is the father of her son and just filed a paternity action lawsuit against the world’s #1 golfer. Tiger’s alleged mistress #10-15 (we lost count way back) filed legal docs in Manatee County, Fla., asking a judge to determine the paternity of Austin Brinling. That is her 9-year-old son, also known as Austin T. James (T is for Tiger, obviously). Devon James filed this legal action in her legal name, Melinda Jannette.

Miley Cyrus Performances: On The Late Show, With Bret Michaels

While Perez Hilton is basking in the spotlight and milking his Miley Cyrus photo controversy for all its worth, the 17-year old singer at the center of this scandal is acting like the mature one. (Man, we never thought we’d write that about Miley Cyrus.) Instead of harping on that situation, Miley is focusing on her music: she appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman last night, joked with the host about Twitter and then performed “Can’t Be Tamed.” Most amazingly, she did it while wearing pants! Miley on Late Show From there, Cyrus woke up today and took to the stage with Bret Michaels. First, though, she continued to defend her racy new image, saying on Good Morning America : “You have to be who you are to the full. There’s nothing that I’m holding back. And that’s what I want to give to my girl fans. Just be who you are.” Ah, there’s the pompous Miley Cyrus we know and love… to mock: sounding all high and mighty about her music when, in reality, she’s just another recycled pop singer that wears skimpy clothing to prove how “edgy” she is. Moreover, and we truly mean this with no predisposed bias or opinion of the singer, but just as people with two working ears: Miley sounds HORRIBLE in the following duet: Bret and Miley Duet

Coldplay Back In ‘Exploratory’ Mood During Rebooted Album Sessions

Mysterious band blogger promises ‘killer’ tunes on Viva la Vida follow-up. By Gil Kaufman Coldplay’s Jonny Buckland and Chris Martin Photo: Getty Images It’s one of the eternal challenges of the musician: to describe the sound you hear in your head and translate it into a song that will stir emotion in your fans. Even harder, though, is describing those songs before they are even halfway finished and trying to make sense of what they may turn into. In the case of Coldplay , that job currently falls to the mysterious “Roadie #42,” who has been posting infrequent updates on the band’s website , the latest of which promises that the tunes for their follow up to the world smash Viva la Vida will be full of, well, “killer” songs. Roadie, who revealed that his/her role has recently expanded to engineering the album, said a few of the lyrics from the band’s debut hit “Yellow” — “your skin and bones turn into something beautiful” — aptly describe the current process. “With the project getting something of a reboot after Latin America, they’ve been very much back in the exploratory phase again,” #42 wrote. “As described in the previous blog, there is a list of songs now and those songs have verses, choruses, riffs, lyrics and so on. These are the raw materials, though. Unrefined and rough, this is the record’s skin and bones, if you will. The ‘turning into something beautiful’ bit is the result of two methodologies.” Working again with Brian Eno , Coldplay have been tracking the album at their new studio in London and in Budapest, and after a recent tour of South America, #42 said they were recently back at work in earnest. Eno has tried to shake things up by forcing singer Chris Martin to work separately from his bandmates and then pairing the band’s members up at random to push the envelope. When last we checked in, the Roadie said rough mixes for a number of songs and a “possible running order” had already been written up. The first methodology is what Eno calls the “screwdriver work,” the craftsmanship and songwriting phase where everything is “tried and changed, analysed and re-appraised” in search of that special Coldplay magic. The second are the “happy accidents” that happen when someone is just noodling around or putting words from a different song onto a new arrangement. “Both things get the record made and neither can be invoked by attempting the other,” #42 wrote. “Sitting around waiting for inspiration doesn’t get the hard work done and long conversations and methodical approaches can waste hours when a single snap of brilliance can change everything in an instant.” While Eno has been popping in to check on progress, he’s also been leaving the band alone to get things done. “It’s been noted that he’s having as much effect on the record when he isn’t here as when he is. The band observed a little while ago that very often when they were working without him and getting stuck, they’d think of something that he would say and apply it, getting them ‘over the hump.’ ” In order to help, the band asked Eno to come up with a kind of Ten Commandments they could hang on the studio wall that would help them get out of musical dilemmas. The rules appear to be working, as Roadie described: “I’ve seen Chris on more than one occasion get halfway through playing something a little too flowery or ‘done before,’ before breaking down in laughter and shaking his head, saying, ‘All I can hear in the back of my head is Brian telling me off.’ ” The band is on break again for a few weeks, spending time with family, but not before a recent spurt of hard work that consisted of ” a real concerted effort to push every song to a place that everyone was excited about … Anything that’s not as great as the current favourite song gets strong focus. Problems get the spotlight so that they can’t hide. A verse that’s not flowing into the bridge gracefully can get a whole day’s attention — the screwdrivers have well and truly been out.” After weeks of tweaking the little details and only paying attention to the bits that don’t work, Roadie said the band is now taking a longer step back and “trying to objectively experience what they have made so far. I could be mistaken, but it genuinely felt as though there was real excitement spreading through the room. Perhaps it began to dawn on the fellas that what they have here is more than just a collection of intros, verses and choruses. “The songs haven’t assumed their final beautiful form yet, but they’re a very long way from their skin and bones phase. What’s impossible not to conclude, though, is that they have some absolutely killer tunes. I have no idea whether the fellas left for their break proud of what they’ve achieved so far and excited about what they have here, but I really hope so. They should be.” Though a spokesperson for the band could not be reached for comment at press time, Coldplay have said they’re aiming to have the new, yet-untitled album in stores by Christmas. Robert Pattinson is the Anti-Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart is so uncomfortable with fame that she recently compared the paparazzi to rapists . Conversely, boyfriend Robert Pattinson is clearly enjoying his time in the spotlight. He’s not obnoxious about it at all, but in each interview Rob gives, he comes across as relaxed, jovial and simply amazed at what his life has become. Case in point: on Nightline last night, Pattinson joked that if he ever has kids and they want to go into acting, he’ll say: ‘Yeah, it’s great. You don’t have to do anything. Everything goes right.'” Asked about his mindset on fame, Robert could have been addressing Kristen directly when he said the key is to enjoy it, “rather than looking like it’s freaking you out and you want to leave.” It’s obvious Robert is following his own advice. See for yourself: Robert was also asked why the Twilight Saga is considered so sexy… even though Edward and Bella wait so long to have sex. That’s exactly the point, Rob replied: ”Anyone who likes the books, they all think they’re really sexy. They just like that moment before [sex]… the kind of tipping point before it goes over. I mean, everybody likes that. That’s the best part, for a relationship.” Yes, folks, Robert Pattinson just talked up the benefits of foreplay. As if it was possible for women around the world to love him anymore than they already do! Watch the entire interview below. Robert Pattinson on Nightline
