Wavin’ a different flag

The fact that I can count down the days to the 2010 FIFA World Cup on my fingers gives me one of the best feelings of excitement ever. While football might not be on par with cricket in terms of fervor and zeal in our neck of the woods, when the World Cup rolls around every four years, even the most dormant of football fans are awakened and make it a point to watch the beautiful game being cherished. I fell in love with football after getting caught up in the excitement of the 2002 World Cup and it has been a wonderful journey since; comprising breathtaking goals, brilliant tackles and awe inspiring saves. From June 11 until July 11, football fans across the nation will be glued to their television screens and all eyes will be on South Africa as it hosts one of the biggest events in the sporting world for the first time on African soil. With thirty-two countries participating and sixty-four games being played, the World Cup guarantees non-stop entertainment for its fans. Hiba, a student from Szabist, Karachi says, “I am excited for the World Cup and just want it to start now! I will be supporting Germany and I really want them to win it this time after coming so close in the last two World Cups. “A month back, I would have confidently predicted Germany to at least reach the semi-finals if not the final; however, the recent injuries to the players have left me worried. They were already in a tough group so now I just hope they play to their potential and we’ll see what happens.” The World Cup has a tendency to attract even those who do not follow football as fanatically as some. “I will try watching some of the matches. I’d probably be supporting the underdogs,” says Usman, a student at the Lahore University of Management Sciences. “I’m not a big football fan but I will end up watching the World Cup because most of my friends will be.” While there is massive support for big teams such as Spain and Germany, a lot of people are rooting for the underdogs too. “I would love to see an underdog do well, especially an African country, and of all the teams, Ivory Coast are the most likely to perform well, even though the competition is stiff for them as they will be facing giants Brazil and Portugal. “I cannot wait to watch Messi, simply because of his performance for Barca. Other than him, Ronaldo and Kaka are definitely in the spotlight, but personally, I want some action from Van Persie, Sneijder, and Ribery,” says Bilal, a student from the Fatima Jinnah Dental College. These sentiments are echoed by many others who are looking forward to star studded performances by Ronaldo, Kaka, Messi and Rooney in the absence of the now elder statesmen David Beckham and Michael Ballack. The anticipation in the country is such that even the arid, coastal strip of the Makran coast wears a rainbow feel as you travel through its ports while the violence hit northern valley of Swat has also been going through football therapy, organising matches to keep the youth busy and distracted. The effect of football reaches beyond the festivities in Pakistan as documented by a report in The News which revealed that during 2006 World Cup the crime rate in Lyari actually fell. Lyari is a heavily populated locality in Karachi, plagued by gang wars and street crime. It is a hotbed of football and home to Abdul Ghafoor, the ‘Pele’ of Pakistan. So how is it that the football World Cup is so hyped up in Pakistan when we do not even have representation (aside from a few officials at the opening ceremony) in the tournament? When asked, most people said it is largely because football is starting to emerge as a popular sport here, building a bigger fan base. While it might not rival the passion for cricket in Pakistanis, it definitely tugs at some strings. “It is sad that our country does not qualify for the World Cup but I think the game here is emerging; there are local and private clubs and if the government starts supporting football here, I think we have the potential to be part of the sport at that level but till then I’m happy chanting ‘Viva Espana’ and I hope Spain wins!” says Huzefah from the Indus Valley School of Arts. Every four years the World Cup also offers restaurants, hotels and cafés the opportunity to cash in on the action and as such the various hotspots around Pakistan are getting into the spirit. In Karachi popular match viewing spots such as the Sports Bar and Le Grand have made special arrangements for the World Cup and are expecting a big turnout, especially for the later stages of the tournament. The Sports Bar has private viewing spaces, which, people can book in advance. Matches will also be shown at the Rahat Stadium and Sheraton Hotel, which can accommodate large groups of excited aficionados. Football fans in Lahore will be going to Kaps, the Mall of Lahore and Jinnah Gardens to watch the World Cup. However, these won’t be the only places hosting big screens and large crowds – university campuses too have made arrangements to cater to the frenzy. The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is also a popular spot for the football fans to gather and watch the games on big screens. Shaukat Hamdani, a LUMS alumni, pointed out that even though lots of people such as himself will be sitting at work when the matches start, there’s always the mini-golf in Lahore to get together at for the later games. Regardless of it not being Pakistan’s most popular sport, a lot of places are banking on the event to bring big business. The Pearl Continental hotel in Bhurban is one of these places while Café Brabus and Espresso Lounge in Islamabad too are making arrangements to cater to the fans. One day, we will hopefully have Pakistan to cheer for but until then let us make the most out of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Who will it be from the thirty-two? Maradona’s Argentina? Euro 2008 winners, Spain? The favourite favourites, Brazil? The defending champions, Italy? One of the underdogs? I cannot wait to find out! By Tabinda Siddiqi for Dawn.com

Heidi Montag Screwing Over Spencer Pratt?

Noticeably absent from last night’s episode of The Hills? Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag. Noticeably absent from his bank account? Her future earnings. According to reports, Heidi Montag filed for legal separation from her husband just after he received his last paycheck from MTV – a $675,000 check. Because they’re married, she (potentially) stands entitled to half of that. But with the legal separation filing, their wages are separate from now on. Nice timing on her part, wouldn’t you say? Dude got played! Heidi is getting her own reality show with Jen Bunney , and given Tuesday’s separation, it appears she doesn’t want Spencer to be part of that deal. Either that or this sham is their most elaborate to date. Is Heidi Montag trying to block Spencer Pratt from her future earnings? Maybe this explains the Mountain Man look? [Photos: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] “I wouldn’t be surprised if Spencer goes postal now,” a source said. “I mean he just got his last check and the way that kid blows through cash …” “I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s broke by the end of July.” The source revealed that since Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt split and he departed their Pacific Palisades home, he has been “living in Malibu.” According to court documents, it appears he and Heidi had a prenuptial agreement, but regardless, whatever Heidi makes now, he can’t touch . Unless they get back together. Will they? Are they even apart for real, or is this a giant hoax? What do you think? Are we just being conned? The Heidi Montag-Spencer Pratt split is …

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth: Together, Happy, Fully Clothed

Breaking, shocking news, readers : Miley Cyrus has been spotted in actual clothing! We know this is difficult to believe, based on the attire Miley donned in Paris and in Rio last week. But it’s true, and we can prove it: Meanwhile, in other news, it appears as though reports of a split between Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were premature. These two were spotted in California yesterday, holding hands and looking as happy as ever. We may criticize Miley (often), but we wish her nothing but the best in her personal life. Perhaps she and Liam will soon get married, have children and settle down away from the spotlight. Far, far, far away from the spotlight. A gossip site can dream, can’t it?

‘Glee’ Yearbook Superlatives: We Name The Best Of The Season

The best Rachel solos to the most ridiculous story lines, we’re honoring the show’s breakout moments and stars. The cast of “Glee” Photo: FOX New Directions may not have won regionals on the season finale of “Glee,” but the misfits of McKinley High certainly gave their rivals a run for their money. And since they didn’t actually take the trophy, we’ve come up with our own way of honoring the hard-working Gleeks: Some yearbook-style superlatives that we feel perfectly sum up the first season. Best Music We’ve known Rachel could sing from the first note of “Les Miz,” but with so many numbers to choose from, it’s hard to decide which was her best. Mercedes also got a lot of solo time, but her greatest moment wasn’t the show-stopping “Dreamgirls” number you’d expect.

Paramore’s ‘Careful’ Video Debuts

Clip features behind-the-scenes footage from Brand New Eyes recording sessions and tour. By James Montgomery Paramore in their video for “Careful” Photo: Warner Music Group Though their ballad “The Only Exception” continues to be a top 40 staple, Paramore have already unveiled the video for the next single from their Brand New Eyes album, the snarling “Careful.” And, given how alive the song is, it’s fitting that the accompanying video features nothing but live footage, shot throughout the making of Eyes and subsequent tour. Directed by Brandon Chesbro (who also did the video for “Exception” ), the “Careful” clip is packed with scenes shot throughout the BNE cycle, including recording sessions in Rob Cavallo’s California studio, their world tour and their just-wrapped spring jaunt with Relient K and Fun. So we get to see the band rocking stages big and small (and massive), along with a healthy amount of backstage high jinks thrown in for good measure. And though the video premiered on Paramore.net , it’s very much the official clip, according to a spokesperson for their label, Atlantic/ Fueled by Ramen. And while the “Careful” video will live online for the immediate future, Paramore will return to the live setting next week, with a string of summer festival gigs in Europe and Scandinavia that stretches into early July. And after that, they’ll roar back to the States in late July as the headlining act on the Honda Civic Tour , along with Tegan and Sara, New Found Glory and Kadawatha. In the meantime, frontwoman Hayley Williams can also be heard on B.o.B’s massive single “Airplanes,” which was recently highlighted by MTV News as one of the top five Summer Jams of 2010 . What do you think of the “Careful” clip? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Paramore

Trey Songz, Drake Heat Up Summer Jam, But DJ Khaled Steals The Show

Usher, Juelz Santana, Gucci Mane, Reflection Eternal and Fabolous also deliver at Hot 97’s annual fest. By Shaheem Reid Trey Songz performs during Hot 97 Summer Jam on June 6 Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage One of the most anticipated moments of Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert on Sunday night was one that was unadvertised, though all the fans felt it was a foregone conclusion: the reunion of the New York rap giants the Diplomats. Juelz Santana was on the bill with his first solo set, but instead of bringing out the members of his unit, he brought out the youngest member of the G-Unit, Lloyd Banks . They made for one of the strongest moments of the night with their smash “Beamer, Benz or Bentley.” But what happened to the Dip’s reunion? One source close to their camp said Jim Jones had some issues with security and police and was not granted entrance in the new Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Freekey Zekey and Cam’ron came out later in the night as part of DJ Khaled ‘s show-stealing set. Hot 97 advertised that Khaled would be bringing out “friends,” and no one knew what to expect. Well, if you follow the Miami multi-tasking, up-and-coming mogul, you would have to suspect that he’d bring out Rick Ross . The two down-bottom mayors are thicker than Starsky and Hutch. Plus, Ross and Khaled did interviews together on Hot 97 earlier in the day. Khaled’s set started with his “All I Do Is Win” remix. Rolling deeper than two football teams, Khaled paraded out T-Pain (who sang the hook) and Busta Rhymes , who unleashed one of the most stylistically bulletproof verses of the year. Ross and Ludacris took the spotlight over on the “I’m So Hood” remix, and Busta regained the reins on his fresh new bopper “Stop the Party.” Rick Ross saluted the playas with “Super High” then continued with the “Angels” remix and his new club stomper “Blowin’ Money Fast (B.M.F.).”

Snooki, ‘Jersey Shore’ Cast Rock MTV Movie Awards Red Carpet

Katy Perry proposes ‘threesome’ to co-hosts Snooki and MTV News’ Sway during pre-show. By Josh Wigler Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The red carpet at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards was an even livelier affair than usual this year, thanks to Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of the “Jersey Shore,” who co-hosted the evening alongside Sway. With all of her signature outrageousness, Snooki relished in the opportunity to interview several celebrities, including “High School Musical” and “Beastly” star Vanessa Hudgens. “You two are so cute together, just got to say it,” Snooki told Hudgens of her relationship with Zac Efron , nominated for his performance in “17 Again.” “You’re so gorgeous you look amazing tonight.” Snooki wasn’t the only one giving out compliments, as Hudgens returned the favor telling the reality TV star that she was acting like “a veteran pro” on the red carpet. The night’s conversation escalated when “California Gurls” singer Katy Perry informed Snooki and Sway that they should all “have a threesome” — a proposition Sway said he “wasn’t scared” to follow through on. But the sexiest action on the red carpet occurred off-camera, as MTV’s reporters on the ground witnessed a big kiss between Snooki and her “Jersey Shore” co-star Jenni “JWoww” Farley. “She got me into it,” JWoww laughed of the kiss. Snooki, however, wasn’t all hugs and kisses. As she was about to announce the winner of the Best Fight award, Snooki turned to the crowd and shouted: “What up bitches! Yo, I have an award to give out for Best Fight, just sayin’!” The fans at home couldn’t stop talking about Snooki, taking to Twitter with comments such as “Snooki is even tinier than I thought. I wonder if she’s ever not allowed on roller coasters?” and “I’m surprised Snooki doesn’t have her poof.” But even if most eyes were on Snooki, her fellow “Jersey Shore” co-stars were enjoying the night as well. “This is amazing,” Pauly D said of the experience. “We’re so happy to be here. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect this.” Of course, Snooki remained firmly in the spotlight. Finally reunited with her “Jersey Shore” castmembers, Snooki paid a compliment to JWoww: “Your boobs look phenomenal tonight. Where did you get them?” Relive the wildest, funniest and most-jaw-dropping moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, watch revealing red-carpet interviews and get exclusive movie clips after the show at MovieAwards.MTV.com. Season two of “Jersey Shore” premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there! Sandra Bullock: The Troops’ Choice

In her first public appearance since the Jesse James cheating scandal and the double divorce and adoption bombshells that followed, Sandra Bullock was in good spirits. And certainly worthy of being called the Troops’ Choice. Returning to the spotlight Saturday, she made a surprise visit to the Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards to accept the “Troops Choice” Award for Entertainer of the Year. Presenter Robert Downey, Jr., awarded her the honor, bestowed by members of the military, and the star received a standing ovation from the Los Angeles audience. The Blind Side Oscar winner looked stunning, too … THE TROOPS SUPPORT HER : And for good reason! In addition to her good looks, the new mother of baby son Louis’ trademark, self-deprecating wit was on display as she accepted the honor last night … “Let’s be honest here, just for a moment. We’re all going to be honest, right? Did I win this for being entertainer of the year, or because of the spectacular I.E.D. [improvised explosive device] explosion that became my personal life?!” Once the laughter subsided, she said , “No, it’s okay. Because I would do it over again if it was to entertain our troops, and our extraordinary troops deserve something much more than some actress in a tight dress talking about herself.” “I would sing, but you’ve seen enough pain in your lifetime. I would dance – I’m a pretty good dancer, but as I mentioned, the dress is pretty tight.” She’s the best.

Diddy Lends Energy to Uninspired Comedy ‘Greek’

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Having swiped the spotlight from top-billed castmates on more than one occasion, Jonah Hill and Russell Brand are rewarded with lead status in “Get Him to the Greek,” only to see the show stolen by others, notably the artist formerly known as P. Diddy. A reunion with Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller that pays far fewer comic dividends, the stop-start R-rated excursion never achieves the propulsive traction and outrageous/endearing balance that made The Hangover such a smash this time last year. Lacking a sturdier venue, the fat boy and the bad boy are at best opening acts in a moviegoing season powered by headliners. As such, the Universal release, which opens Friday (June 4), will not likely prove to be a sizable draw, though the scarcity of bawdy, male-skewing comedies in the marketplace could work in its favor. Reprising his foppish British rocker character from the Jason Segel -penned Sarah Marshall , Brand plays Aldous Snow, who has since been in a career free fall. Reeling from a disastrous concept single/video (the reviled “African Child”) and a split from girlfriend Jackie Q (a terrific Rose Byrne), Aldous has taken a potentially irreparable plunge off the wagon. Enter Hill’s Aaron Green, an ambitious record company executive in the employ of the certifiably nutty Sergio Roma (Sean Combs), who thinks that the upcoming 10th anniversary of Snow’s triumphant concert at Los Angeles’ famed Greek Theater could make for a lucrative comeback gig. Liking what he hears, Sergio gives Aaron three days to fetch Snow from London and personally escort him to the Greek, with the caveat that he will be dealing with “the worst person on Earth.” Needless to say, there will be a lot of rerouting on the trip back, but despite the occasional onscreen appearance of a digital countdown clock, writer-director Stoller never seems to be in any hurry to move the characters and plot along. Although Brand, who makes for credible damaged rock ‘n’ roll goods with a singing voice to match, and a subdued Hill manage to lay down a few scattered, genuinely funny riffs, the larger laughs are provided by the supporting players. Combs doesn’t so much deliver his lines as announce them, and every time he pops up, he lends the listless proceedings a gonzo boost; and Byrne’s bubbly Brit pop star hits the inspired mark. Detours to New York and Las Vegas provide for a slew of cameos, including Lars Ulrich, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Rick Schroder and, in a show of NBC Universal corporate solidarity, “Today’s” Meredith Vieira and a green-room guest, noted economist Paul Krugman. But even with the personality parade, “Greek” never really finds its comic bearings.
