Diddy Lends Energy to Uninspired Comedy ‘Greek’

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Having swiped the spotlight from top-billed castmates on more than one occasion, Jonah Hill and Russell Brand are rewarded with lead status in “Get Him to the Greek,” only to see the show stolen by others, notably the artist formerly known as P. Diddy. A reunion with Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller that pays far fewer comic dividends, the stop-start R-rated excursion never achieves the propulsive traction and outrageous/endearing balance that made The Hangover such a smash this time last year. Lacking a sturdier venue, the fat boy and the bad boy are at best opening acts in a moviegoing season powered by headliners. As such, the Universal release, which opens Friday (June 4), will not likely prove to be a sizable draw, though the scarcity of bawdy, male-skewing comedies in the marketplace could work in its favor. Reprising his foppish British rocker character from the Jason Segel -penned Sarah Marshall , Brand plays Aldous Snow, who has since been in a career free fall. Reeling from a disastrous concept single/video (the reviled “African Child”) and a split from girlfriend Jackie Q (a terrific Rose Byrne), Aldous has taken a potentially irreparable plunge off the wagon. Enter Hill's Aaron Green, an ambitious record company executive in the employ of the certifiably nutty Sergio Roma (Sean Combs), who thinks that the upcoming 10th anniversary of Snow's triumphant concert at Los Angeles' famed Greek Theater could make for a lucrative comeback gig. Liking what he hears, Sergio gives Aaron three days to fetch Snow from London and personally escort him to the Greek, with the caveat that he will be dealing with “the worst person on Earth.” Needless to say, there will be a lot of rerouting on the trip back, but despite the occasional onscreen appearance of a digital countdown clock, writer-director Stoller never seems to be in any hurry to move the characters and plot along. Although Brand, who makes for credible damaged rock 'n' roll goods with a singing voice to match, and a subdued Hill manage to lay down a few scattered, genuinely funny riffs, the larger laughs are provided by the supporting players. Combs doesn't so much deliver his lines as announce them, and every time he pops up, he lends the listless proceedings a gonzo boost; and Byrne's bubbly Brit pop star hits the inspired mark. Detours to New York and Las Vegas provide for a slew of cameos, including Lars Ulrich, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Rick Schroder and, in a show of NBC Universal corporate solidarity, “Today's” Meredith Vieira and a green-room guest, noted economist Paul Krugman. But even with the personality parade, “Greek” never really finds its comic bearings.

Janet Jackson American Idol final 2010 performance

Janet Jackson (C) performs at the American Idol Grand Finale 2010 in Los Angeles May 26, 2010. Janet Jackson steals the spotlight while performing on American Idol on Wednesday (May 26) in Los Angeles. The 44-year-old started off with a slow ballad, “Nothing,” and worked her way into the fast-paced “Nasty.” ( Former Idol judge Paula Abdul choreographed the original video for this song.) Simon Cowell Gets Elaborate Farewell From Paula Abdul, ‘American Idol’

‘I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am,’ Simon says on ‘Idol’ finale. By James Montgomery Simon Cowell Photo: Getty Images Although the main point of Thursday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” finale was — in theory, at least — to crown a new champion, ever since Simon Cowell announced back in January that he’d be leaving the show at the end of season nine, fans had been wondering just how tonight’s show would unfold. Now we know. Cowell’s departure was treated with equal parts humor and sadness, a mix of a Friars Club roast and a genuine, heartfelt tribute show. And, somewhat fittingly, it culminated in the single largest performance in ‘Idol” history. Show producers poked fun at Cowell’s notoriously prickly demeanor with a series of vignettes, titled “Simon Cowell: Uncovered,” which featured some of his greatest put-downs and bust-ups, along with joking barbs from his soon-to-be former fellow “Idol’ judges. “I think Simon has an incredible poker face. He’s got an ability to really hold back what he’s feeling,” Kara DioGuardi said, while a montage of Cowell cracking up during particularly odious auditions rolled. “He’s very professional.” “Is Simon a flirt?” Paula Abdul asked with a laugh at one point. Abdul, of course, shared the judges’ table for eight years with Cowell. “Yeah, if you’re a mirror,” she said. There was also a song that sampled some of Cowell’s greatest put-downs (“You sounded like a cat being thrown off a skyscraper”; “If you win this contest, we will have failed”; “You sounded like a background singer for a background singer,” etc.). The ditty was performed by comedian Dane Cook, but oddly, it was interrupted by onetime Cowell sparring mate Ian Bernardo, who swiped the mic and launched into a “Kanye moment,” declaring, “Nobody cares, it’s all about Ian Bernardo tonight. I’m going to replace you tonight Simon!” The mic was quickly wrested away from Bernardo by none other than fellow “Idol” oddball Normund Gentle, as cameras pulled away and show producers cut to commercial break. And yet, for a guy who had spent nine seasons shooting down the dreams of “Idol” hopefuls, it was a strangely fitting tribute too. Also jibing with both the “oddball” category was Abdul’s appearance. She appeared center-stage to pay homage to her friend and former colleague, but things quickly devolved, as she joked in her patented mumbled banter about leaving the show because she and Cowell had a love child. Still, things quickly improved from there, as Cowell was serenaded by seven of the eight “Idol’ champions, all of whom had been crowned under his watch (only David Cook was M.I.A.). Then a group of some of the show’s other favorites from seasons past joined the seven, swelling the total number of performers to well over 30. As the crowd cheered, host Ryan Seacrest beckoned Cowell onto the stage, and gave him the microphone. Standing center-stage, with some of the greatest “Idols” surrounding him, the man known for his massive ego seemed downright touched. “I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am. … The show goes forward, it will be different, but I just want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the support, the fun, and your sense of humor,” Cowell said. “You know what he truth is, when everyone asks who’s going to replace me, who’s going to be the next judge, the truth is, you guys are the judge of this show. And you’ve done an incredible job over the years … it’s been a blast.” And then he turned to Seacrest — his sparring partner of nine years — and, getting a bit choked up, said, “Even you … I’m going to honestly, honestly miss you.” As the show cut to commercial, Cowell smiled and waved to the crowd … it was genuinely touching. The end of an era. The beginning of the end. Both. Oh, and like, 20 minutes later, Lee DeWyze won. As if anyone cared. What did you think of the “Idol” farewell tribute to Simon? Venus Williams goes commando

Venus Williams won her French Open first-round match today, but the spotlight was on what she was wearing—and not wearing. The No. 2 seed sported a lacy black concoction with underpinnings similar to the ones that caused a stir at the Australian Open by creating the illusion that she was going commando. The get-up is “about illusion,” Williams told the AP. http://www.newser.com/story/89787/venus-williams-turns-heads-in-win.html added by: unimatrix0

Larry Birkhead Admits: I’m Greedy!

Let’s give Larry Birkhead credit for honesty. Ever since Anna Nicole Smith’s death, this total loser has exploited his former lover’s passing by posing the daughter he had with her (Dannielynn) for various paparazzi and tabloid photo ops. Seriously, look at this and try not to vomit. We’ve called Birkhead out on numerous occasions because he likely made money off his child, a despicable act, especially considering the fact that life in the spotlight couldn’t have helped Anna Nicole with her substance abuse problems over the years. Now, Larry is at it again – but at least he admits that he’s exploiting Smith’s memory for cold, hard cash. Birkhead is auctioning off Anna Nicole’s Mercedes, dog bed and pieces of artwork to raise funds for himself and his thre-year-old daughter. “It’s like, do I want to hold on to one of Anna’s dresses, or do I want to try to help Dannielynn’s future,” Birkhead said, trying to sound altruistic. “We have money. We have more than enough to survive on. [Auction proceeds] would just supplement that.” Know what else would supplement the money you’ve already made off Smith’s legacy, Larry? Getting a job! The auction will take place on June 26 and proceeds will go to the Anna Nicole and Daniel Wayne Smith Foundation. This would be a noble idea, if causes other than Larry Birkhead himself benefitted from it.

Sons Of Sylvia Make Splash In ‘American Idol’ Debut

‘Love Left to Lose’ brotherly trio grew up on the road with preacher parents. By Gil Kaufman Sons of Sylvia’s Ashley Clark performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX They’ve been jamming together their whole lives, though they never really heard secular music until they left home. They grew up on the road with their itinerant preacher parents, playing worship tunes before forming a brotherly trio and switching from the sacred to the (slightly more) profane. Kings of Leon, right? No, actually, Sons of Sylvia . The Virginia-bred Clark brothers — lead singer/fiddler Ashley, guitarist/mandolin player Adam and resonator guitarist Austin — had their major coming-out party on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” results show, but the trio has been prepping for their turn in the spotlight for more than three years. Introduced by longtime pal Carrie Underwood, the band performed their country rock anthem “Love Left to Lose,” and after a show that featured such stars as Rascal Flatts, Shakira and Lady Antebellum, on Thursday morning (April 29) it was Sons of Sylvia who were among the most searched topics on the Internet. “A lot of people don’t know who we are,” said youngest Clark brother Austin, 26, on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the pre-taped performance aired. He said he hoped that the world would be interested in the band come Thursday morning and that new fans would run out and buy the boys’ just-released debut, Revelation. “I hope so,” he said from a West Virginia tour date opening for Underwood. “I’m just taking it one day at a time. I don’t know what to expect. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m freaked out. I love it.” After the dissolution of their family band the Clark Family Experience in 2007, the trio — who have eight other siblings — rebranded themselves the Clark Brothers and quickly went on to win the first and only season of the “Idol” spin-off “The Next Great American Band.” The win earned them a recording contract with Universal South Records (they later switched to Interscope and changed their name) and a management deal with 19 Entertainment, but it would be several more years before they got their break. Longtime pals with Underwood, they performed on the song “What Can I Say” from her third album, Play On, and toured with her soon after her win on the fourth season of “Idol.” They also toured with SHeDaisy and logged time working on tracks for Southern rapper Bubba Sparxxx. But years after Ashley shared what Austin called a “really crappy” apartment in Nashville with the Clarks’ second cousin, then unknown songwriter leader Ryan Tedder, the new superstar OneRepublic leader returned the favor by co-writing and producing “Love Left to Lose,” helping to boost them into the spotlight. After pushing aside some of the more bluegrass-leaning aspects of their sound in favor of a more expansive, anthemic rock sound on the album, Austin said the group decided a name change was in order. “From the point of winning the show and making the record, we evolved so much,” he said. “We were just a three-piece acoustic band on the show and when we got to do what we wanted in the studio it evolved so much that we felt it was right to change the name.” Like KOL — who, it’s worth noting, the Clark boys know after traveling in the same preacher kid circles as youngsters — the Clarks decided to pay homage to a formative figure with their new name. “Yeah, it’s our mother’s name,” said Austin proudly. “We wanted to do something nice for her. She had 11 kids, so they’re angels!” Both of their parents had a formative influence on their musical upbringing. Dad Fredrick taught them how to play instruments and mom was a church singer, but Austin said the siblings really developed their musical chops by backing up their folks in church and picking up licks from professional pickers while playing bluegrass festivals as kids. After their parents kept them away from rock and roll when they were kids, Austin described discovering the Beatles and Rolling Stones when he left home as “like coming out of the stone age.” It’s been a long road, but for now he’s just basking in the glow of the “Idol” exposure and looking forward to being on the road with Underwood through December. “We’re brothers and I’ve been doing this since I was born,” he said. “If not on the stage, then sitting on the couch at home just trading licks. … It feels like a childhood dream as far as: start a band, get a record out and being on tour. All of this is actually happening. I wake up every day baffled.” Related Videos ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances Related Artists Sons Of Sylvia

‘The Hills’ Stars Kristin Cavallari, Audrina Patridge Share Big Post-Show Plans

Lo Bosworth wants a talk show, while Stephanie Pratt will continue in fashion. By Jocelyn Vena Kristin Cavallari Photo: Christina Garibaldi/ MTV News The long-awaited final season of “The Hills” premiered at last on Tuesday night. Now, with only 11 episodes to go, many fans have been wondering what’s up next for the “Hills” cast. MTV News caught up with some of the stars, who said they won’t be stepping out of the spotlight anytime soon. “I’m transitioning to hosting, so I would love to host a style show, a travel show, a cooking show,” Lo Bosworth told MTV News . “Something like that next. … I think a long-term goal for me is to be on a talk show. I would love, love, love to do that. I have some off-camera projects that are going, but I can’t reveal them yet — but very soon. I am really excited for the next step.” Like Bosworth, co-star Kristin Cavallari is also looking to continue her career in television — but behind the lens. “Going back to ‘The Hills,’ I’ve enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes and how everything gets put together, the TV magic,” she said. “So I want to start producing. I’ve been pitching some shows and talking to some people about that. So, hopefully, right away I can get one of those running, and then I want to keep acting. I would like that. I like being in charge and calling the shots.” Although there’s been talk that Audrina Patridge may land her own reality show, she said that a break was foremost on her mind. “I plan on taking a vacation,” she said. “I really want to go to Europe and just travel and hang out with my friends and family down in Orange County. But other than that, I’m still going to castings and still going to auditions for acting, definitely going to continue pushing for that. I would love to do a time piece, like, medieval. I love ‘The Tudors’ and I love ‘Troy’ and those types of movies. So, that’s my dream.” With her castmates eyeing the film and television worlds, Stephanie Pratt said she’ll focus on fashion . While on the show, Pratt enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. “My original goal before ‘The Hills’ was a career in fashion,” she said. “I’m designing handbags right now with a partner, and other leather accessories.” What would you like to see “The Hills” stars do next?
