‘NSYNC? Boyz II Men? Celebs Pick Their Top Boy Bands!

‘Jersey Shore’ star Vinny Guadagnino, Monica, ‘Glee’ actress Dianna Agron and more weigh in on MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands. By Christina Garibaldi New Kids On The Block Photo: Michel Linssen/ Getty Images With the Battle of the Boy Bands nearing the Final Four , things are getting pretty intense among fans who are furiously voting to keep their favorite groups in the race. Along the way, we lost some of the early front-runners , including the Backstreet Boys , ‘NSYNC , New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men . Just because the Boyz were knocked out in the second round of the competition doesn’t mean they don’t have their die-hard fans out there — among them “Glee” star Dianna Agron. “When I was growing up, it was ‘NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees,” Agron told MTV News of the late-’90s boy-band explosion. “I was so obsessed with Boyz II Men in fourth grade. ‘Motownphilly’ — so good, so awesome.” The R&B group is a favorite of Monica ‘s as well. “My favorite boy band would have to be New Edition and Boyz II Men,” she told MTV News. “I don’t know if you consider these boy bands though, but they were just unbelievable.” Another popular choice was ‘NYSNC, who made a shocking first-round exit when they lost in the final moments of voting to British boy band 5ive . Justin Timberlake and company ruled the charts (and the hearts of teen girls everywhere) in the late ’90s. “I would say ‘NSYNC was my favorite boy band. They’re amazing, they were so talented,” former Danity Kane singer Aubrey O’Day said. “Obviously Justin came from that. We all know we were sweating Justin!” Posters of Timberlake most certainly lined the walls of millions of fans, including Selena Gomez, who revealed to MTV News that her first crush was the former ‘NSYNC member. Of course, picking just one boy band isn’t always easy, which was the problem for Roc Nation’s newest member, British singer Rita Ora . “My ultimate boy band, I have a few: Jackson 5, Jagged Edge — I love Jagged Edge,” Ora said. ” ‘NSYNC, they were the ones, I swear.” But when “Jersey Shore” star Vinny Guadagnino picked his ultimate boy band, he opted for keeping it in the MTV family. “I kinda liked 2ge+her ,” Vinny admitted. “I loved [‘U + Me = Us’].” Voting for the Elite Eight in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Wednesday, May 2. The Wanted Out To Prove Boy Bands ‘Make Good Music’

‘If you like us despite it or because of it, then we’re happy,’ Jay McGuiness tells MTV News of boy-band label. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway The Wanted Photo: MTV News It’s not always easy being in a boy band. There are a lot of preconceptions for the five guys who choose to sing catchy pop tunes and dance in formation for a living. Given that boy bands have come in and out of fashion once every decade for the last few years, it should come as no surprise that we are knee-deep in a brand-new boy-band bonanza . This one is being led by this generation’s ‘NSYNC and Backstreet Boys: One Direction and the Wanted . When MTV News sat down with the Wanted to premiere their “Chasing the Sun” video , they chatted a bit about being labeled a “boy band.” “Eventually, we were, like, over it,” Jay McGuiness explained. “If you like us despite it or because of it, then we’re happy.” Well, something is working for the guys. Their lead U.S. single, “Glad You Came,” has topped the charts, and they are once again getting people dancing with “Chasing the Sun,” from their just-released debut U.S. EP . It’s a good time to be in a boy band, thanks to all the love out there for them. And it’s an even better time to be in the Wanted. It seems that their success might have a lot to do with the way they’ve approached their boy-band career thus far. “We went out there and we’re like, ‘You know what? I think we can change people’s perspectives of the ’90s boy bands,’ ” Tom Parker explained. “And that was our aim: just to make good music.” Voting in round two of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Boyz II Men: The ‘Battle Of The Boy Bands’ Forefathers

Boyz up against longtime rivals Jodeci in round one; voting open now! By John Mitchell, with reporting by Jocelyn Vena Boyz II Men Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images Our Battle of the Boy Bands got off to a roaring start Monday as fans of new groups like the Wanted and One Direction and legacy acts like ‘NSYNC and New Kids on the Block hit our bracket hard to push their favorites on to the next round. One group that is in it to win it is Boyz II Men , who told MTV News they were among the “progenitors” of the entire boy-band genre. “We were kind of like the progenitors, the torch holders of a lot of the artists, of a lot of the boy bands that came about,” Nathan Morris told us. Highest Chart Achievement In the mid-’90s, Boyz II Men ruled the charts. That’s not hyperbole, either — three of the top-10 longest-running #1 singles in the history of the Billboard chart belong to the band. Their top song, though, is actually a duet, and with 16 weeks spent atop the chart, it’s also the biggest single ever: “One Sweet Day” with Mariah Carey. Boyz II Men are one of just four artists or groups to have held the #1 spot for at least 50 weeks cumulatively. On the all-time list, they fall at #4, behind only (ahem!) Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Carey. (With 47 weeks, Usher falls just short at #5.) Clearly, the band has quite a few chart achievements under its belt. Standout Video The Boyz made a series of great videos for their hits “End of the Road,” “I’ll Make Love to You” and “Water Runs Dry,” but for its cameos alone, “On Bended Knee” rises above. In the clip, each band member breaks up with and eventually reconciles with a girlfriend, played by four famous actresses: Victoria Rowell, Ren

Interracial Love Focus Of New HBO Film “The Loving Story” [TRAILER]

Read the original post:

The white bricklayer from Virginia defied stereotypes and centuries of racist laws when he married Mildred Jeter, who was black and Native American. Convicted of violating a law against interracial marriage, the Lovings fought for their rights and won a landmark 1967 Supreme Court case that struck down such bans nationwide. Read: Black Love Their lives are explored in a new documentary, “The Loving Story,” which premieres Tuesday on HBO. Today, there are more than 4 million “mixed marriages” in the United States, and roughly one in seven new marriages are between people of different ethnicities. But in 1958, when the Lovings’ marriage was ruled illegal and they were banished from their native Virginia, 21 states outlawed interracial unions. “The Loving Story” details the couple’s nine-year battle to live in Virginia as man and wife. Using evocative photographs, newly unearthed footage and interviews with the Lovings’ daughter and lawyers, the film reveals the power of love to overcome bigotry.

Wiz Khalifa Says His First Album Could Have Been Better.[Expilicit]

View post:

Wiz took to his Tumblir to talk about his last album. He admits it wasn’t his best. “Im high as fuck and don’t even know to start this so ima just say thank you to everyone who’s supported the TAYLOR GANG movement and showed love up to this point. We’ve all grown so much since i first came onto the scene and most of all inspired a whole new generation of muh fuggas who aren’t afraid to be themselves and unite. Before there were Taylors, the game was lacking fun, unity, positivity, and love for one another. Shit, your favorite rappers weren’t even getting paid well. You guys changed that, and the game shld forever be in debt to you. I remember getting 500 dollars for a show to fly out and see kids who had no idea what a wiz khalifa was, and you crazy muh fuggas showed up. Had a great time, and spread the word. Its ya’lls spirit who revived the rap game and brought back the true art to this shit. Your demand for live shows made it possible for a lot of rappers to come from nothing and feed their families. Promoters too, more kids are managers, dj’s videographers. Shit everyones eating. Thanx to you Taylors!!!! Take credit for that shit. Lol Moving forward we gotta take that positivity with us. Theres tons of different crews now which is so inspiring because people are finding their own voice and unique lane. As Taylor Gang WE FUCK WIT EVERYBODY. We aren’t afraid to say we’re fans of other artists and bump their music, go to their shows and promote them to the top. Showing equal love. Thass Taylor’d. Dnt let anyone ruin your spirit or make you feel uncomfortable about what you like. What we say goes. Not them. Thass what started this whole thing regardless of what people think. Sayin fuck them and doin what makes us feel free. Dnt let anyone take ur view on things and twist it against you. Dnt let em make you feel like you weren’t the first. Anyone questioning my choice in clothing as of lately (lol) I’ll just go out and say that it was needed. In a climate where everyone is looking and sounding the same, i always try to inspire my fans to be different. And i lead by example. At one point the way I used to dress was considered “different” but now its very much the norm and accepted. Which is cool. Thass what we do it for, but the next step had to be made. Im older, my wife is a supermodel, and ima trippy ass nigga. My clothes reflect that. My toms cost $45. My Louboutins cost $2500. Moving on to the music, I haven’t been this excited about any of my projects ever. I remember when i made kush and orange juice, I listened to it and knew I had created a new genre that wld change music. The mistake i made on Rolling Papers was thinking it was time to move on from that genre not knowing that it had impacted people so much. The album did great numbers, but creatively wasn’t my best work. No regrets though. We live and we learn. So for my fans sake and own personal enjoyment, Ive gone further into the world we’ve created and elaborated on our genre with the mixtape Taylor Allderdice and of course my sophomore album ONIFC. Im so confident in the artistry and creativity of these projects because so much living went along with them. These aren’t songs aimed to be hits or widely accepted or even understood. Iss for people who live like us and can relate. And informative to those who can’t. Either way we’re inviting mu fuggas deep into our world and I can’t wait. I got new visuals, a new clothing line, and the new show is gonna be amazing. This is for us. Taylor Gang Or Die.” -O.N.I.F.C
