Schwarzenegger, Nick Sheinberg and Kimberly Barth started the brand to generate awareness about global issues through fashion. By Kara Warner Patrick Schwarzenegger Photo: MTV News We’re always happy to see people using their power for good and striving to make the world a better place, which is why we were particularly pleased to meet Patrick Schwarzenegger, Nick Sheinberg and Kimberly Barth, the dedicated young people behind Project360 , a brand that uses fashion as a way to generate awareness for important global issues. The three “philanthropreneurs” invited MTV News to visit their headquarters in Los Angeles recently, as well as their fundraiser to benefit Best Buddies , during which they explained how Project360 was born. “Nick and I thought up the company at a women’s conference in 2008 by just creating little rubber bracelets,” Schwarzenegger, son of Arnold and Mariah Shriver, said of the organization’s beginnings. “It was really successful, and Kimberly was working at another booth and she came up and said, ‘These bracelets look great. I think we can expand from there.’ We always wanted to do something that gave back to charity. Fashion and wearing clothes is a daily routine for everybody. What better way to spread the word of giving back and philanthropic ways of life than to wear something that gives back to charity?” “The idea behind it is that it’s more than fashion, it’s a fashion statement,” Barth added. “Everything has an inspirational message that reflects the global cause that we donate to. It’s about more than clothing. It’s about style and looking cute, but it’s really about making a difference and making a global impact together.” Schwarzenegger said that while his famous family members inspired and instilled in him the values of public service, he and his co-founders started Project360 entirely on their own, with their own money, and their success has been particularly satisfying because of how much time and effort they’ve put into it. “We sit down together, we ponder a bunch of names depending on what charities we’ve picked,” Barth explained of their decision-making processes. “We go through different words, we talk about what has the most meaning to us and narrow them down, and we also want what would look best visually on a T-shirt.” The passionate, hardworking trio hopes the company can keep growing and one day be able to give back, like Toms Shoes’ one-for-one business model. “Every day, we have a new idea and new ambition, so we’ll see what happens,” Barth said. “I’m really excited about the immediate future and thrilled with how well it’s come to fruition to begin with. We’ll see what happens.” To see how other celebs are helping to make a difference, check out the MTV Act blog.
As you may know, in 1991 Troy Davis was convicted of murdering a Georgia police officer . Twenty years after his conviction and despite growing doubts of his actual guilt, an execution date has been set for September 21. The Georgia Board of Pardons & Paroles will determine Troy Davis’ fate on September 19 during a final clemency hearing. As NAACP President & CEO Benjamin Jealous said, “Time is running out, and this is truly Troy’s last chance for life.” Now is the time for action! The NAACP (in partnership with Amnesty International) began the #TooMuchDoubt campaign last Tuesday. There are three easy ways that people can support Troy Davis. 1. Sign the petition to the Board of Pardons and pass this on to your friends and family. Each name means a more united front for justice: http://action.naacp.org/Name-Wall 2. Send a message of support to Troy as he fights for justice on what may be the final days of his life. http://action.naacp.org/LettersOfSupport 3. Make sure everyone knows about this injustice. Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter (hashtag #TooMuchDoubt) so that Troy Davis’ story can be heard. We still have a chance to save his life, but only if people are willing to speak out against injustice. The NAACP will also be on the ground mobilizing our members and allies in the state of Georgia as Troy Davis’ hearing date approaches. On September 15 they will hold a rally at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA.
Leo DiCaprio, Joe Jonas, Alicia Silverstone and more are doing their part for Mother Earth. By Jocelyn Vena Leonardo DiCaprio Photo: Kiyoshi Ota/ Getty Images Some of Hollywood’s biggest names have been open about their love for the planet. So in honor of Earth Day, MTV News zeroed in on some of La La Land’s greenest superstars to show the ways in which they’re using their celebrity to shed light on important environmental causes. Leonardo DiCaprio has set the bar very high for other green celebs. And he is, in many ways, the face of environmentally-minded Hollywood. Not only does he have his own foundation focused on finding sustainable options, but he also wrote, produced, and narrated “The 11th Hour,” a film about the dangers of global warming. Much like DiCaprio, Ed Norton is a well-known activist who has worked with charities that help bring attention to Mother Earth. Norton has also teamed up with the Enterprise Green Communities Initiative and BP’s Solar Neighbors program. He recently worked with Joe Jonas for the singer’s Change for the Children Foundation. Joe has been vocal about the ways his fans can help the planet. Last year, he recorded the song “Make a Wave” for the “Oceans” soundtrack, and he spoke MTV News about getting involved. “There [are] a lot of things that people can do to help out that they don’t really know about. The movie really … helps you understand what you can do. Whether it’s really taking your time and going to the beaches and helping out or whether it’s something at home, there’s so many different things that if we all do it together, just like anything else, we can make a big impact.” Alicia Silverstone, a vegan , continues to spread the word about eating sustainable foods. She released a cookbook, “The Kind Diet,” and shared with MTV News why she feels it’s important others eat in a way that’s both “kind” to the environment and their own bodies. “I started to glow, and people were like, ‘Why do you look so great?’ I felt so much better, and I used to take an asthma inhaler and I used to get allergy shots — and all that stuff went away. And my skin got great,” she explained. “So what I found was at first, I thought this was good karma.” Other well-known celebrity activists include Hayden Panettiere, Chace Crawford , Rosario Dawson and American Ferrera. How are you helping the planet on Earth Day? Tell us in the comments!

Bam Margera even strips down for the ad, one of four movie spoofs the crew shot. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Johnny Knoxville in a parody of “The Social Network” Photo: MTV News In anticipation of the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards next week, MTV News enlisted the cast of “Jackass 3D” to help spread the word about the star-studded event, by way of four hilarious parodies of the Critics’ Choice nominees for Best Picture. We caught up with our favorite merry band of misfits — Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, etc. — during the filming of their take on “The Social Network” to get the lowdown on the movie spoofs. In the “Social Network” scene we watched them shoot, Knoxville and company take on a tense boardroom, but in predictably outrageous fashion. Knoxville plays Mark Zuckerberg in a blond curly wig and Margera is an interrogator trying to get Zuckerberg’s attention by opening up the shirt of another person at the table (“Jackass” castmember Dave Englund) and licking his armpit. “We’re spoofing four movies. We’ve never done anything like this before,” Knoxville said. “So God knows how they’re going to turn out. I play Mark Zuckerberg; Wee-Man and Preston play the Winklevoss twins.” There is also a clip of Margera sprawled out on a conference table, totally naked — a situation Knoxville and Margera felt obligated to explain. “Poor Bam, the room was ice-cold,” Knoxville said. “Everyone, please know that the room was ice-cold in there.” “Every time that I’m naked, it’s always cold out,” Margera protested. “It’s Los Angeles, and it’s freezing.” “He could be standing on the equator, and he’d call it cold out,” Dunn added, nixing Margera’s masked attempts to make excuses for his physical appearance in the scene. Tune into the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Friday, January 14, on VH1.

Poison tap water has become the number one trending search term on Google Trends today after our efforts to bring attention to how sodium fluoride in tap water is a deadly health threat went viral. The subject hit “volcanic” status shortly after Alex Jones launched the new anti-fluoride campaign on his show today. However, Google appears to be censoring the Prison Planet story we wrote on the subject from appearing in its news section. The story appears under a routine Google search but is apparently being blocked from the news aggregator, thereby preventing people who see the “poison tap water” search trend from finding out more information about the subject. Alex Jones is launching a new campaign to inform the public about the toxic chemical fluoride being added to tap water across the country. While EPA scientists and workers are calling for an end to water fluoridation, the government is doing everything in its power to continue and even increase the amount of toxic chemicals being added to public water supplies. The flyer listed above is a tool that can be used to get the message out about this serious crime against the people. Fluoride is a toxic poison that has known serious side effects. Spread the word. Post this flyer in legal, easily visible locations. Pass it out to friends, family, and people you meet.
