Joe Wright ‘s latest Anna Karenina had a cast, screenplay and plan of action in hand in the spring of 2011, but the acclaimed filmmaker of Atonement and Pride & Prejudice made a bold step a mere two months before beginning the shoot. Instead of another straightforward narrative telling of the story of the epic novel by Russian great Leo Tolstoy, he opted to go for a theatrical angle in depicting the saga of a late-19th century Russian high-society aristocrat who breaks entrenched taboos and embarks in a torrid love affair with affluent soldier, Count Vronsky. In Toronto where the film is having its World Premiere Friday night, cast members including star Keira Knightley and Wright likened the sudden change to “jumping off a cliff,” but they were ready for the challenge, though not all were sure if it would ultimately succeed. “I don’t know that we did know it would work,” Keira Knightley, who plays Anna Karenina, said Friday morning. “With Anna Karenina it’s been done so many times before and there was a sense that if you’re going to tell this story again, you might as well do something that’s out there.” “Out there” includes depicting scenes of the titled heroine (or anti-heroine) on a stage as her marriage and social status disintegrates. Wright grew up working at his parents’ puppet theater and took classes at the Anna Scher Theatre School and even acted on stage, no doubt influencing his creative point of view. And, perhaps conveniently, the reversal served-up some pragmatic pluses, according to Wright. “A lot of the budget was being spent on hotels and travel and all this stuff that the audience is never going to get to see,” he said in Toronto today at a hotel with a small group of journalists. “And I thought, if I could set this film in one place, where would it be? I was reminded of Orlando Figes’ book Natasha’s Dance: A Cultural History of Russia , in which he talks about Russian society as if they lived upon a stage.” Wright also said that locations he’d been visiting in Russia and England for the shoot did not appear to be the key to give his project a new vision for Anna Karenina or its star Keira Knightley. “It just got to a point where I was walking around stately homes in England and I had people saying to me, ‘Well we’ve made three Keira Knightley films here before,’ and in Russia we had people saying, “Oh yes, we’ve made seven Anna Karenina s here before,’ and I was going, ‘Oh god, why am I doing this, it is so depressing.” The ultimate screen result is hypnotic and sumptuous, but Knightley admitted that the style will not work for everyone, though the few people who caught a glimpse in pre-premiere screenings here are already saying Knightley and others including Jude Law, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and others may be hefty contenders for next year’s Oscars race. “He demands 110% and that’s exactly what we give him and it makes him an extraordinarily magical person to work with, and a frightening person to work with, because it’s everything for the time you’re making it,” Knightley, who starred in Atonement and Pride & Prejudice said. “And that is why people said let’s go with the new concept. Not because we necessarily knew it would work, but we knew this was a team that would give 110 to 150% who will try and make it work. And at least we knew we’d given it our all.” Knightley said that she had read Anna Karenina as a teenager, but re-read it again last summer and had an entirely different take on the woman she’d eventually portray. “The dichotomy of Anna is that you’re not entirely sure what you should think about her. She is deceitful and manipulative and needy. But she is also wonderful, full of energy and full of love. She is also all of these things and completely culpable for what she does. She is a creature that makes you think of yourself because when you look at our own lives, the people we hurt the most are the people we love the most.” “I’m glad how daring Joe has been,” concluding Knightley on Friday, “and I’m glad I jumped off the cliff with him.” Read more from the Toronto Film Festival. Proving that no celebrity marriage is safe, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett have announced their separation after nine years of marriage. A rep for the couple says the split is “amicable,” though few other details are available at this time. Arnett and Poehler were married in August of 2003 and are the parents of sons Archie, 3 and Abel, 2. Arnett guest-starred on Poehler’s Parks and Recreation in 2010, while other shared on-screen credits for the pair included Arrested Development , Blades of Glory , Horton Hears a Who! , On Broadway , Spring Breakdown and Monsters vs. Aliens . This marriage was the first for Poehler. Arnett was previously married to Penelope Ann Miller. We wish each side the very best in this difficult time.
I know at times I’m a Kim Kardashian hater. I hate how she became famous and how she now tries to consider herself to be a role model when she’s just a former adult actress. Also, I don’t think her booty is all that great. I’ve seen many pictures and I know that there are cheese curds growing inside that big ol’ rump. However, if you want to talk breasts, Kim’s are exquisite. And that is the perfect dress to show those babies off. Good job princess.
This is an improvement from yesterday’s “Spring Breakers” photocall . Sure Selena Gomez , Vanessa Hudgens , Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine are still not in their bikinis but at least they look their age and not like upper-middle class housewives. Anyway, I just want to thank the Paparazzi perve who took this photo . Who knew Selena had so much available front meat to push up?
I hope the action in Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers picks up after this scene. The film, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, is about four college girls — played by Selena Gomez , Vanessa Hudgens , Rachel Korine and Ashley Benson — get mixed up with an arms and drug dealer, played by a Kevin Federlinesque James Franco , after they rob a restaurant to fund their spring break vacation and land in jail. This listless and very blue-hued first clip from the movie appears to be setting up the hotties’ motivation for their lawlessness. Apparently, there’s nothing like the boredom and brown grass of small-town living to make criminal activity sound like a hoot. FIRST PEEK: Spring Breakers from MUSE Film on Vimeo . Missouri Congressman Todd Akin has apologized for a remark found incredibly outrageous and offensive by both Republicans and Democrats. In an interview with KTVI-TV of St. Louis yesterday, the U.S. Senate candidate was asked about his view on abortion and defended his strict pro-life stance by saying: “First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Two questions, of course, have arisen from this statement: What medical process of “shut down” is Akin talking about? What the heck is a “legitimate” rape?!? Following outcry from citizens and politicians – Mitt Romney’s camp said “Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong. Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.” – Akin quickly apologized and attempted to clarify: “In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year,” he said. “I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue. But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action.” Of course, he didn’t actually answer either of the questions posed above. And now many are asking a different question of Akin: Should he drop out of the Senate race against Claire McCaskill? What do you think?
Despite reports to the contrary, Roberto Martinez may still be in the running to be the next star of The Bachelor, according to the best source there is. Roberto was being courted by the network several months ago, though no agreement was reached, and he was reportedly dating Kara Ramos at the time. Many thought he was out, especially given the emergence of Sean Lowe and Arie Luyendyk, Jr. But Reality Steve says Roberto is very much in the mix. Steve claims Roberto Martinez , who won The Bachelorette in 2010 but broke up with Ali Fedotowsky earlier this year, is now single and ready to mingle. The network is as interested now as it was this spring. Arie Luyendyk Jr. , for his part, is interested in being the star, but perennial Bachelor spoiler Steve says he doesn’t “chance in hell” of landing the gig: ”Yes, they [ABC execs] have met and interviewed both Sean and Arie, but I still haven’t heard anything solid enough that says it won’t be Roberto.” “This is Roberto’s gig to lose, which is why they were after him hard three months ago. If he got greedy, then I bet they give it to Sean.” Olympic champion Ryan Lochte is also rumored to be interested, though that seems like a long shot at best. The next season is set to begin filming September 15, so look for ABC to announce its star soon, probably during Bachelor Pad . Who do you think should be The Bachelor?
Spring Breakers doesn’t have a release date scheduled yet, but that just makes the SKINticipation all the more intense as we await the transformation of Disney princesses Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens and former child star Ashley Benson into cigarette-smoking, bikini-clad, foul-mouthed college girls who turn to robbery to fund their Spring Break antics. Rounding out the crew is director Harmony Korine ‘s 26-year-old wife Rachel Korine and James Franco , decked out in cornrows and wifebeater as the drug dealer who bails the girls out of jail. Director Korine said in an interview with Interview magazine back in June that when he was in college, ” Everyone I knew would go to Daytona Beach and the Redneck Riviera and just fuck and get drunk—you know, as a rite of passage. I never went. I guess this is my way of going. ” This month’s issue of Premiere Magazine France features exclusive images from the film and confirms what paparazzi pics from the set seemed to indicate- that Selena, Vanessa, and Ashley are going way, way out of their comfort zones. We’re still in the dog days of summer, but spring break can’t come fast enough. See more from Spring Breakers Selena Gomez , Vanessa Hudgens , Ashley Benson , and Rachel Korine after the jump!
