Lord Monckton wins global warming debate at Oxford Union

For those who don’t know, the Oxford Union is the top of the food chain for scholarly debate. This is a significant win. Founded in 1823 at the University of Oxford, but maintaining a separate charter from the University, The Oxford Union is host to some of the most skillful debates in the world. Many eminent scholars and personalities have come and either debated or delivered speeches in the chamber. Monckton was invited as part of the formal Thursday debate. It is described as follows: The Union is the world’s most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 182 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. Here is a view inside from a previous debate: Oxford Union Debate on Climate Catastrophe Source: SPPI Army of Light and Truth 135, Forces of Darkness 110 For what is believed to be the first time ever in England, an audience of university undergraduates has decisively rejected the notion that “global warming” is or could become a global crisis. The only previous defeat for climate extremism among an undergraduate audience was at St. Andrew’s University, Scotland, in the spring of 2009, when the climate extremists were defeated by three votes. Last week, members of the historic Oxford Union Society, the world’s premier debating society, carried the motion “That this House would put economic growth before combating climate change” by 135 votes to 110. The debate was sponsored by the Science and Public Policy Institute, Washington DC. Serious observers are interpreting this shock result as a sign that students are now impatiently rejecting the relentless extremist propaganda taught under the guise of compulsory environmental-studies classes in British schools, confirming opinion-poll findings that the voters are no longer frightened by “global warming” scare stories, if they ever were. When the Union’s president, Laura Winwood, announced the result in the Victorian-Gothich Gladstone Room, three peers cheered with the undergraduates, and one peer drowned his sorrows in beer. Lord Lawson of Blaby, Margaret Thatcher’s former finance minister, opened the case for the proposition by saying that the economic proposals put forward by the UN’s climate panel and its supporters did not add up. It would be better to wait and see whether the scientists had gotten it right. It was not sensible to make expensive spending commitments, particularly at a time of great economic hardship, when the effectiveness of the spending was gravely in doubt and when it might do more harm than good. At one point, Lord Lawson was interrupted by a US student, who demanded to know what was his connection with the Science and Public Policy Institute, and what were the Institute’s sources of funding. Lord Lawson was cheered when he said he neither knew nor cared who funded the Institute. Ms. Zara McGlone, Secretary of the Oxford Union, opposed the motion, saying that greenhouse gases had an effect [they do, but it is very small]; that the precautionary principle required immediate action, just in case and regardless of expense [but one must also bear in mind the cost of the precautions themselves, which can and often do easily exceed the cost of inaction]; that Bangladesh was sinking beneath the waves [a recent study by Prof. Niklas Moerner shows that sea level in Bangladesh has actually fallen]; that the majority of scientists believed “global warming” was a problem [she offered no evidence for this]; and that “irreversible natural destruction” would occur if we did nothing [but she did not offer any evidence]. Mr. James Delingpole, a blogger for the leading British conservative national newspaper The Daily Telegraph, seconded the proposition, saying that – politically speaking – the climate extremists had long since lost the argument. The general public simply did not buy the scare stories any more. The endless tales of Biblical disasters peddled by the alarmist faction were an unwelcome and now fortunately failed recrudescence of dull, gray Puritanism. Instead of hand-wringing and bed-wetting, we should celebrate the considerable achievements of the human race and start having fun. Lord Whitty, a Labor peer from the trades union movement and, until recently, Labor’s Environment Minister in the Upper House, said that the world’s oil supplies were rapidly running out [in fact, record new finds have been made in the past five years]; that we needed to change our definition of economic growth to take into account the value lost when we damaged the environment [it is artificial accounting of this kind that has left Britain as bankrupt as Greece after 13 years of Labor government]; that green jobs created by governments would help to end unemployment [but Milton Friedman won his Nobel Prize for economics by demonstrating that every artificial job created at taxpayers’ expense destroys two real jobs in the wealth-producing private sector]; that humans were the cause of most of the past century’s warming [there is no evidence for that: the case is built on speculation by programmers of computer models]; that temperature today was at its highest in at least 40 million years [in fact, it was higher than today by at least 12.5 F

Sandra Bullock Settling Into New Role: Mom

Despite a rough few months, Sandra Bullock is doing very well these days. You can thank Louis Bardo Bullock! After months of secrecy, the actress brought her four-month-old son out in public this spring – first in the People cover story that also announced her divorce from Jesse James , then over Mother’s Day weekend in New Orleans, and days later in Texas. In Austin, Tx., where she owns a home, she “showed the baby off to just random people in stores,” a fellow shopper said. “Sandra was in a really happy mood.” Sandra Bullock is “such a natural with [Louis] and so easygoing and chill,” one local store owner, Jennifer Mazuelos, tells Us Weekly . “And he’s such a big boy!” Sandra Bullock’s new son is helping her heal . After the devastating revelation that Jesse James was putting it to Michelle McGee among other nasty women, Sandra ended the union in an divorce filing. With the timing of her adoption announcement, she in some ways hijacked the baby , or at least the positive PR from it, from James, who adopted little Louis with her. In any case, the Oscar-winner is settling into full-time motherhood. “Sandra is loving it!” a pal says. “Having Louis around is perfect therapy for what she went through.” While Bullock never considered adopting alone prior to her split, her unexpected single parenthood has been “an extraordinary lesson for her,” a friend says. Extraordinary and cute.

Stephen Colbert on D&D

…….hey buddy,….everyone went through the “rat problem” phase. In the spring of 1976 I was in seventh grade. I had been reading science fiction for two years and had just started bleeding over into fantasy. One day at lunch I overheard my friend Keith saying, “I listened at the door, and I didn't hear anything, so I went inside and got attacked by a giant rat!” I said, “What do you mean, you listened at the door? What are you talking about?” They said, “Well, it's kind of hard to explain, but in this game called Dungeons & Dragons there's a probability that you'll hear something through a door, and my character's a thief so he can hear better. The game just came out. Come over Friday and we'll play.” I did and was instantly hooked. A whole new kind of game. No board — just dice, just probabilities. It allowed me to enter the world of the books I was reading. I put more effort into that game than I ever did into my schoolwork. We were all complete outcasts in school — beyond the fringe, beyond nerds. We were our own sub-dimensional bubble of the school. I'm not even sure we were on the rolls of any of the classes; that's how outcast we were. D&D made quite a little explosion when it first came out. We were close to the Bible Belt, and ministers were preaching on TV against it, saying that it was a cult,….. to be continued,…after these dots…………….. http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/dungeons-dragons-online/537989p1.html added by: remanns

Paramore Perform ‘The Only Exception’ On ‘Ellen’

Band is wrapping up a spring tour before headlining this summer’s Honda Civic Tour. By MTV News staff Paramore’s Hayley Williams performs on “Ellen” Photo: Warner Bros. On Friday (May 14), Paramore took time off from their spring tour to stop by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” where they performed a somber, sweet version of their current single, “The Only Exception.” The performance — actually taped Thursday — showcased Paramore’s burgeoning quiet side, with frontwoman Hayley Williams singing in hushed tones, her eyes tightly shut, and guitarist Josh Farro strumming the melody on an acoustic and singing backup. The band’s other guitarist, Taylor York, added dreamy flourishes on an electric. Bassist Jeremy Davis and drummer Zac Farro played it similarly tight, laying down a muted, pretty backbeat. It was a stately, refined performance, perfectly suited for daytime TV, and at the end, the audience cheered wildly, while Williams did a triumphant jig — apparently there were some real-deal Paramore fans in the crowd, too, as Williams finished her little dance and pointed and smiled to a section of the audience — and DeGeneres herself bounded onstage to thank the band, declaring, “I love them!” She then touted Paramore’s Brand New Eyes album and announced that everyone in the studio audience would be receiving a copy. Paramore will wrap their spring tour Sunday and, after a run of festival gigs in Europe, will return to the States to headline the Honda Civic Tour , which kicks off July 23 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Tegan and Sara, New Found Glory and Kadawatha will be joining them on the trek. Williams can also be heard singing the hook on B.o.B’s smash “Airplanes,” and she’s already planning to shoot her cameo in the video. Did you see Paramore’s “Ellen” appearance? B.o.B Collaborator Bruno Mars Talks Long Road To Success

‘I’m not just gonna be coming to you with one sound,’ Mars says of his versatility. By Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News Bruno Mars is the man of the moment as the Hawaiian-born singer is currently featured on two of the spring’s biggest hits in B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire.” Now, Mars’ debut project, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, released May 11, should keep his momentum going long into the summer and fall with its mix of earnest lyricism and warm melodies. But despite the usual overnight-star talk, the humble Mars appeciates his years-in-the-making rise to success, which he credits with developing his sound. “It’s great, man — I mean, the fact that it had to take this long, you know,” he told MTV News. “When we wrote ‘Nothin’ on You’ and ‘Billionaire,’ these are songs that are coming from special places. And the beauty of it is, I feel like I’m a unique artist because I like to dabble in a lot of things. The fact that “Nothin’ on You” is working with me signing over this hip-hop track and ‘Billionaire’ is working with me singing over this reggae track, I think it opens up a lane and lets people know I’m not just gonna be coming to you with one sound.” Mars initially made his mark behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer — he was pursuing a recording career and lucked into an opportunity to turn over a song of his to an already signed artist. The chance encounter was so unexpected, though, that he actually wanted to decline the offer. “At the time it was like, ‘No way, this is my art and this is my music,’ ” Mars explained. “They said, ‘We’ll give you $20,000,’ and I said, ‘Here you go, hold that.’ And I kind of became this producer overnight. I never wrote a song before, especially for somebody else — I started writing and producing because I had to eat.” Eventually he joined forces with Phillip Lawrence and later Ari Levine, and now the production trio is known as the Smeezingtons. Prior to scoring back-to-back hits for B.o.B and Travie McCoy, the collective laid down numbers for Flo Rida and Brandy, among others. With Mars’ profile increasing, the Smeezingtons will flex their muscles throughout It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, a four-song EP that features collaborations with Cee Lo and B.o.B. “The journey wasn’t short at all — it was trial and error and trial and error,” Mars said of his current predicament. “It was just back and forth, man. But once ‘Nothin’ on You’ blew up, I had these songs in my back pocket and the label thought it’d be a good time to give people a little taste of what they’re gonna get with the album. The EP came together real nice; you’re gonna get a nice effect of what’s in store.” Are you excited to hear more Bruno Mars music? Let us know in the comments below!
