Drake’s Spring Break 2010 Set Shows How Far He’s Come

In 2009, Lil Wayne brought the rookie onstage with him; this year, he’s on his own. Drake performs at mtvU’s Spring Break 2010 Photo: mtvU It’s amazing to think that at this time last spring, Drake was a relative unknown. A year ago, Lil Wayne brought Drake and the rest of his Young Money camp onto the mtvU Spring Break stage in Panama City Beach, Florida, for a performance of “Every Girl.” That shortly after So Far Gone dropped, but shortly before the mixtape took Drake to another stratosphere. Fast-forward to last week’s Spring Break 2010 shows in Acapulco, Mexico, and there couldn’t be a more perfect example of the line in his song “Over”: “I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t last year.” Drake performed that song — the first single off his upcoming Thank Me Later — for the first time on television in front of hundreds of excited, scantily clad partiers. This time, Drizzy was rapping by his lonesome, backed only by a live band. Drake recently told MTV News that he wanted “Over” (produced by Boi-1da and Al Khaaliq) to prepare everyone for what’s to come from him. “I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know, ‘This is how I’m coming out in the public eye. I’m ready for anything,’ ” he said. “Then when you get the album, it’s like, ‘Oh, he’s still human. He’s still thinking the same way.’ I wanted people to understand I could have lost it. ‘Over’ could have been my entire album. Just ’cause that’s what this industry and game will do to you if you lose yourself.” At Spring Break, Drake looked like he was composed and enjoying himself — jumping around, smiling and taking time to hit a beach ball back toward the crowd. Drake’s fellow Young Money member Nicki Minaj also performs at the show. She joined Ludacris onstage in a white one-piece bathing suit covered by a see-through body suit and a platinum-blond wig as she spit her equally eccentric guest verse for “My Chick Bad.” Trey Songz also hit the stage to perform his cocksure, sultry single “I Invented Sex.” Related Videos Spring Break 2010 Performances Related Artists Drake

Spencer Pratt Still Signed On For ‘The Hills’ Season Six

Though he says he’s taking a break to fight cyber crime, MTV says Pratt is still on the show. By Jocelyn Vena Spencer Pratt Photo: Jason Mitchell/ Getty Images “Hills” fans may have been surprised to learn last week that Spencer Pratt would no longer be managing Heidi Montag’s career, but they were probably more blown away on Monday, when Pratt told People.com that he’d be leaving the reality show behind in order to pursue a career in fighting cyber crime. But though a rep for Pratt confirms that he gave those quotes to the magazine, an MTV spokesperson seemingly contradicted his statement. “Spencer will still be a part of ‘The Hills’ season six, which will air this spring,” the spokesperson told MTV News. “In the last few months I have discovered a new passion and new purpose to my life,” Pratt told People.com , teasing his new career path. “With this in mind, I have decided to take a break from my obligations to MTV’s ‘The Hills’ and discontinue filming any more episodes for this current season.” The 26-year-old told the magazine he is currently studying software engineering with a focus on encryption at USC so that he can work for the American Defense Enterprises in their cyber security division. “Upon learning of President Obama’s declaration that the ‘cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation,’ I have decided to refocus my energy and devote my full resources to helping America face this and other unprecedented challenges,” said Pratt, whom Heidi replaced with psychic Aiden Chase as her manager. “My new mission is this: To do my part in maintaining the technological superiority of the U.S. military and prevent emerging technologies from threatening our nation’s security,” he added. “With that being said, I am saddened to take this break from filming MTV’s ‘The Hills.’ At this time, however, I feel I would not be honoring my country or myself if I were to continue this endeavor when I have the opportunity and the ability to assist our nation against these prevalent threats.”

Matisyahu Says Olympic Song ‘One Day’ Is ‘A Global Anthem’

‘I wanted to write a song that was an accessible global anthem for hope and peace,’ MC says. By Kyle Anderson Matisyahu Photo: Brian Appio Matisyahu is honest: He’s not exactly the biggest Olympics aficionado. Still, that didn’t stop him from crafting “One Day,” a collaboration with Akon that has been serving as the official anthem of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The song wasn’t written expressly for the games (it first appeared on Matisyahu’s 2009 album Light ), but the themes and goals of the track ended up applying perfectly. “I wanted to write a song that was an accessible global anthem for hope and peace,” the MC told MTV News. “I don’t know exactly how it came about, but somebody heard it and thought it would be a good fit.” Since the start of the games, “One Day” has popped up in a number of places during NBC’s broadcasts, from soundtracking montages to scoring bumpers. The MC even got the opportunity to travel to Vancouver for a few days. While he was there, he felt the positive vibe that has extended to everybody in Vancouver around the games. “I had one moment when we were performing and we were playing ‘One Day’ and I looked out into the crowd and saw all these different flags,” he explained. “Everybody has their flags, and it was a cool a really cool feeling — a utopian kind of feeling.” Even though he doesn’t consider himself much of a Winter Olympics enthusiast, he has plenty of background in some of the biggest sports of the games. “I played hockey growing up and it’s a sport I really enjoy. I also worked on a ski mountain for a few years and got into snowboarding, so I’m something of a winter sports kind of guy,” he said. As a result, he has been deeply invested in the United States’ ongoing improbable run (including their upset victory over Canada). If nothing else, it keeps things interesting while he’s on the road (continuing a tour that will last well into the spring). “Some guys in my band are Canadian, and we all grew up playing hockey, so there’s a friendly rivalry happening.” Related Artists Matisyahu

Booted ‘American Idol’ Contestant Chris Golightly Blasted By Ex-Manager

Singer was under contract, but his ‘promises were just empty rhetoric,’ former manager says. By Eric Ditzian Chris Golightly Photo: FOX As the top 12 men of “American Idol” get ready to take the stage Wednesday (February 24) for the second night of the season nine semifinals, the controversy surrounding one singer who was briefly a part of that coveted group continues. Following Chris Golightly’s ouster from the competition last week, his former manager has spoken out about his disqualification. “Idol” producers booted Golightly because of a previous contract he’d signed, rendering him ineligible to continue in the competition. Golightly has forcefully denied the contract was still in place when he tried out for the reality show, and now his former manager, Lawrence Franklin of Dream Projects Entertainment, has released a statement and given an interview to The Los Angeles Times in which he disputes Golightly’s account and says the singer re-upped his contract with boy band Dream 5 in the spring of 2009, only months before his “Idol” tryout. “[On] May 30, 2009, I created his second contract,” Franklin’s statement read. “A two-year agreement with Dream Projects Entertainment. However, his words and promises were just empty rhetoric.” It was on that day, Franklin says, that Golightly recorded Dream 5’s first single, “One Love,” at a studio in Los Angeles. Nonetheless, Franklin says he did speak with “Idol” producer 19 Entertainment about releasing Golightly from his contract. “After we spoke with 19 Entertainment, they told [Golightly] that our release would be no good for them and that I personally would have to sign one of theirs to release him,” he told the Times. “We waited on those documents and that’s when time ran out for him, because they were never sent over. From the beginning, we wanted him released legally because two contracts couldn’t exist [simultaneously].” Golightly has repeatedly disputed that he was under contract before trying out for “Idol.” He held a press conference Tuesday outside a Hollywood club where he displayed what he said was proof that his contractual obligation had ended prior to “Idol.” During his Times interview, Franklin accused Golightly of getting into a physical altercation with one of his bandmates. “One of the group members was upset that Chris was missing rehearsals because it was slowing things down — he had missed a major show we were planning with Ray J — and when the group member questioned Chris about it, Chris pushed him up against the wall and was put on blast for that,” Franklin said. Drake Says Thank Me Later Influenced By Nas, Andre 3000

‘I went back and really studied Nas and Andre 3000 and then came back with this album,’ rapper said about his debut album. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Tyrone Kerr/ FilmMagic Drake has plenty of people onboard to give him advice on the process of recording his major-label debut album, Thank Me Later. There’s Lil Wayne, of course, his lyrical mentor. And Kanye West, who the Toronto MC said has been his biggest musical influence . Jay-Z, in interviews, has even gone on record relaying some tips to the upstart rapper. According to Drake, though, the former “Degrassi” actor sought out the audio work of Nas and OutKast’s Andre 3000 to help inspire the work on his project. “I went back and I really studied Nas,” Drake explained in a video recorded over the weekend and posted online on Monday (February 22) . “Nas was somebody that I used to listen to his raps and never understood how he did it. I always wanted to understand how he painted those pictures and his [rhyming] bar structure. I went back and really studied Nas and Andre 3000 and then came back with this album.” Thank Me Later is due later this year on Young Money/Universal Records. In the spring, the rapper will kick off a headlining, eco-friendly tour to promote the album. The album will be Drake’s first solo project since 2009’s So Far Gone, the dark mixtape that featured the breakout hit “Best I Ever Had.” While the Young Money cohort has been mum about his plans for the follow-up, he did reveal his debut would be more upbeat in comparison to his mixtape. “It’s gonna be bigger, it’s gonna sound happier,” he said. “More victorious, ’cause that’s where I’m at in my life.” Related Artists Drake Nas
